| Comments: | I am sad to report that my two good brothers in arms have passed away in the last week. Mike (Doc) Stout and Jim (Doc) Callahan both of C & A Co. 2/28th, '66-'67.
Mike was ill over the years and last year had a cancerous Kidney removed. Just recently the cancer spread and he was being taken care of by Hospice at home until his death. Jim Callahan, whom Mike and I reunited 16-yrs ago, called me and told me of Mike's terminal illness. He said he was going to fly out to Mike's home and spend a few days with him. After a week Jim returned home only to get ready to return to Mike's side. On the day he was to return he suffered a seizure on his motorcycle and crashed into a house. He died at the scene. We had tough times together and good times too. Mike & Jim rest peacefully together again. |

| Comments: | YOU COULD HEAR A PIN DROP
When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building' by George Bush. He answered by saying, 'Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return. you could have heard a pin drop. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Then there was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break one of the French engineers came back into the room saying Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?' A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: 'Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply ectrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck.. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have? ' You could have heard a pin drop. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S.,English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, 'whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English.' He then asked, 'Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?' Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied 'Maybe it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German.' You could have heard a pin drop. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AND THIS STORY FITS RIGHT IN WITH THE ABOVE... A group of Americans, retired teachers, recently went to France on a tour. Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane.. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on. 'You have been to France before, monsieur?' the customs officer asked sarcastically. Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously. 'Then you should know enough to have your passport ready.' The American said, 'The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it.' 'Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France!' The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained. 'Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in '44 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find any Frenchmen to show it to.' You could have heard a pin drop What Is A Veteran? A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America for an amount of 'up to, and including his life. There are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that fact. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

| Comments: | I was born 6 weeks before WWII started, had two cousins who fought in the Korean War, and had many friends fighting in Vietnam. Frank just lost both his parents, both veterans of WWII.
We can never thank our soldiers enough! With a Tear I my eye; I’m sending this along for everyone to admire & contemplate! And a heartfelt, “Thank You” to all of our Vet’s! C… WELL DONE!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The elderly parking lot attendant wasn't in a good mood! Neither was Sam Bierstock. It was around 1 a.m., and Bierstock, a Delray Beach, Fla., eye doctor, business consultant, corporate speaker and musician, was bone tired after appearing at an event. He pulled up in his car, and the parking attendant began to speak. "I took two bullets for this country and look what I'm doing," he said bitterly. At first, Bierstock didn't know what to say to the World War II veteran. But he rolled down his window and told the man, "Really, from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you." Then the old soldier began to cry. "That really got to me," Bierstock says. Cut to today. Bierstock, 58, and John Melnick, 54, of Pompano Beach - a member of Bierstock's band, Dr. Sam and the Managed Care Band - have written a song inspired by that old soldier in the airport parking lot. The mournful "Before You Go" does more than salute those who fought in WWII. It encourages people to go out of their way to thank the aging warriors before they die. "If we had lost that particular war, our whole way of life would have been shot," says Bierstock, who plays harmonica. "The WW II soldiers are now dying at the rate of about 2,000 every day. I thought we needed to thank them." The song is striking a chord. Within four days of Bierstock placing it on the Web, the song and accompanying photo essay have bounced around nine countries, producing tears and heartfelt thanks from veterans, their sons and daughters and grandchildren. "It made me cry," wrote one veteran's son. Another sent an e-mail saying that only after his father consumed several glasses of wine would he discuss "the unspeakable horrors" he and other soldiers had witnessed in places such as Anzio, Iwo Jima, Bataan and Omaha Beach. "I can never thank them enough," the son wrote. "Thank you for thinking about them." Bierstock and Melnick thought about shipping it off to a professional singer, maybe a Lee Greenwood type, but because time was running out for so many veterans, they decided it was best to release it quickly, for free, on the Web. They've sent the song to Sen. John McCain and others in Washington. Already they have been invited to perform it in Houston for a Veterans Day tribute - this after just a few days on the Web. They hope every veteran in America gets a chance to hear it. GOD BLESS every EVERY veteran...and THANK you to those of you veterans who may receive this ! | Comments: | I recently retired with 32 years of service in the Army and Army National Guard with 22 years total active duty, two of which as a Black Lion. On 16 September 1975, at AFEES Newark, (to paraphrase an unknown author) “I wrote a check to the United States to cash as they saw fit”. They saw fit to deploy me to various locations for various amounts of time over 32 years, none were in a combat theater, and like so many others that served where they were ordered to, the title Veteran applies. |

| Comments: | Since no one else has responded to Mr. Gary O'Keefe's idea of Vets, I will. In my opinion of veterans, I would think anyone who has put on a uniform for our country would be considered a vet. Maybe not a combat vet like ourselves but a peacetime or stateside vet just the same. Who do you think protects our shores and land during the time we're not over there getting our ass shot at and us doing the same to them?
My brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, cousins and other family members proudly served their country during peacetime and I'll be damnned if I'll not call them Veterans. BTW, I also was in 'A' Co. 1st Bn 28th Inf @ Phouc Vinh in 1965-66. Point man, 3rd platoon. Although Lt. Parker did not and could not remember. |

Did I miss the story someplace. I believe that the South Vietnamese Spys set a counter charge, under the 40 lb shape charge and killed the highest body count unit in the area. I was back at Charlie Med. The night before some dump ass dropped a 155mm on our ambush position and killed Murphy and Geiger--wounded Joe Fry, me, and mentally screwed up Jerry Jensen for life. Yes, I am still pissed.

| Comments: | Yesterday I had a go round with with a bunch of so called "veterans". They say they are vets even though some never left the states or even came close to a war zone. They told me the VA considers anyone who ever served in uniform a "veteran", no matter where or for how long. To me, that's total BS, I don't believe it, or buy it for one second I told them they aren't 'veterans' by any stretch of the imagination. For them to call themselves vets is demeaning to anyone who ever served in a war zone. They are putting themselves on a par with WWII vets, Korean Vets, Vietnam vets, Gulf war vets Iraqi and Afghansitan vets. Am I wrong about that and just way out of the loop? Curious as to what anyone here thinks. BTW, I was in A Co. 1st Bn, 28th Inf @ Phouc Vinh in 1966.
