a great work of literature, I disagree with anyone who says that the story itself is absolutely racist. The characters are stereotypes-- yes. The point is, as I interpret it, that black people were freed ONLY to abuse their freedom by turning their popular culture and role-models into people who are clinging to a "victim" state of mind. A generalization, yes, but check out rap stars.. look at their posture and facial expressions. Look at all the half-naked women with fully clothed men in the videos (but, yeah, we get that elsewhere, too). It seems to give the impression, "We were done wrong. We have a bad attitude. Don't fuck with us." So, the *culture* has a defeatist attitude with poor work ethics. That is NOT a reflection on individuals or small groups! If you think that black culture has an excuse for its lower overall status because they are "oppressed," look at the Jews. They were decimated less than 50 years ago and, as a culture, have picked right up again WITHOUT forgetting their past. |
