The 1912 medal, presented to Worksop-born Wilf Bartrop, was snapped up at auction by multi-millionaire Barnsley FC backer Patrick Cryne. The determined buyer beat off rival bidders – including Bartrop's relative, Oxford University Professor Peter Holland – to buy the 15 carat gold medal at Bonhams in Chester. The medal sold for £14,400 – more than double its expected selling price. Barnsley won the FA Cup at Bramall Lane on April 24, 1912, the only time the Cup Final has been played in Yorkshire. Bartrop was killed, in 1918, aged 30, four days before the end of the First World War. (Which means that you now know where it is, and might be able to go and see it in Barnsley) |

I am related through my grandma's family (Taylors)to Frances or Fanny Bartrop or Barthorpe, born Worksop 1829, christened Worksop 6.5.1829, married Firbeck to Charles Taylor 11.1.1847 died Dinnington 24.1.1906, buried Firbeck 27.1.1906. Fanny and Charles had 8 children including my great grandfather William Taylor, born about 1853 in Sheffield, and Barthorpe Frederic Taylor, born 8.7.1868 in Laughton en le Morthen.

So far what I have found is his great grandmother was Harriet BARTROP bn abt 1877 in Worksop. She married Harry Stafford FOX in Worksop in 1899. Harriet's parents were William BARTROP bn. abt. 1834 in Worksop and Charlotte KEIGHTLEY bn. abt 1837 in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. They married in Worksop in 1860. William and Charlotte had 7 children that I am aware of James, Anne, John, Charles, George, Harriet and Harry. If anyone has any connection to this line I would appreciate it if you could contact me. His book, which you should ALL read is called "Swifter than the Arrow". A story of football and war..look up Wilfred Bartrop who was a famous footballer in his day! My late father Arnold Bartrop was born in Worksop 01.01.1910. I have a brother William b1939,(what a lot of Bartrop's have that first name)! Lots of my relatives still live in the Midlands, but I don't and never did. My Grandparents, William b.1883 and his wife Mary Ann (Kirkham) b.1882 moved to Accrington in ?1912. Apart from my father they had another son,William b 1905. Having read the web-site and enjoying all the comments I was inspired to add my bit...thanks go to Peter for doing OUR family tree of the Bartrops. My great uncle was Alf who came from Worksop, one time funeral director complete with horses with purple plumes,later owning a Rolls Royce for posh funerals all over the Midlands and North. My father was Howard William born in 1920 in Cleethorpes; his father, George, was Alf's brother. Howard's brothers, George Reginald and Jack Burr, moved from Cleethorpes to London at the outbreak of war c1939 and served in the navy and RAF. Post war they had a nursery business in Goffs Oak, Hertfordshire for 50 years. None survive to this day but the name lives on in Bartrop Close, Goffs Oak (Posh Spice's parents live further down the lane and it's not posh at all!) |

Trying to trace any barts out there who belong to my side of the family, my dad was john william who I believe came from the Worksop Area. My dad was one of four. Annie, lotte, john, alf. All in age order,regretably all deceased now, Dad was born Sept 8th 1914. My Grandad ? Bartrop married Ada Atkinson. They moved to South Kirkby Nr Pontefract West Yorks. All my family worked at the pit, I`ve read the guest book times many but to no avail, hopefully someday, somewhere,someone,will contact me with just a smidgen of info as to just who or should I say where I actually come from. My mother was born Christine Bartrop, but I have been slowly tracing my line on my fathers side. I know that the Nuttall line has been traced back by a dedicated genealogist for hundreds of years by "Auntie" Pat, and I've got a copy somewhere. His father (my grandfather) was called William Bartrop and he was a collier in Worksop for most of his life. Hello relatives.
