I owned two homes in Stone Ridge, and went to the Rosendale movie theater many times, between 1984 and 1996; unfortunately, my connection to the area was cut when my economic situation couldn't afford the luxury of a home up there. I did have the privilege of attending a concert in the "caves" on the Snyder estate of a group of "fiddlers" from the Shetland Isles who came on tour in, I think, 1993 or 4. We hosted some of them at our house. It was a wonderful event.

This is a wonderful site. My father, his parents and other relatives spent a lot of time up in Rosendale during the 1800's and early 1900's. There was some family connection of which I am not sure. My father would go up to Rosendale about once a year to visit all the old places and friends up until he died in 1974. My grandmother swam in the canal every day during the summer. It is so nice to see the history being preserved. My daughter and I now make a yearly trip to Rosendale in the summer to look at the old house and the places my father and his family had such happy memories of. Keep up the good work. I have a picture of the old house if you would like a copy for your website, you can reach me by email.

We (Mohawk Valley Community College, Rome Campus Library) just received a notice about a book entitled "Thank Rosendale," which says that Rosendale and not the Erie Canal was responsible for New York State's Industrial Revolution. We're the birthplace of the Erie Canal, so naturally we're curious about Rosendale.

I remember Rosendale very well....lots of fond memories. I used to live there until 1976 when my family moved to Florida. We lived behind the old Rosendale Food Store/Fann's dept. store...West End Ave. I remember the beautiful waterfall right beside our place there. We used to ride our bikes up to the 32 Lunch near Fann's and get an ice cream. I wonder if some of the same families are still there....The Ritter's, the Coddington's, the Mim's, the Cutler's, The Muller's. I remember going up to the barbershop to get some candy ...it was a small place, but boy did he have the best candy!! Those were the good ole days. I also remember that "cool" cave we past by often on that turn as we would ride by and say "ahhhhhhh" . It did throw our some nice cold air. I also remember the old railroad tressle too. It has been many moons since I lived in Rosendale...but I have never forgot it!!! Many many memories!!!

Great site. I had been reading the Handbook of Brick Masonry Construction 1942 and was surprised to learn that natural cement was once a major industry in the U.S. and that it had hydraulic qualities. Wanting to know more I came across your website. It filled in some blanks in my inquiry. I would like to see the natural cement available once again not only for proper restoration work, but as a unique product for home improvement projects.

Lived in Rosendale in 1943 to 1950 and lived in the area (Kingston, Port Ewen, Lake Katrine, Cottekill, Lomontville) until 1991. I miss it terribly . I remember Mr. Snyder riding his Arabian up thru the village in the 40's up to Rte. 32 and in winter with his horse driven sleigh.....the sound of those sleigh bells were the best music to be heard. Enjoyed reading about my home town but. I was looking for more information about the Eddyville & Hickorybush Railroad (Described as the "Old Horse Railway" on my father's property survey maps) which ran on a right of way from the Rondout Creek along Dewitt Lake Rd past the White's Mill under the thruway at whiteport rd along the road down to Kilns near the ponds by the dump into the properties now occupied by Williams Lake Hotel. I recall hearing a story about the first steam locomotives on the line that where too big to fit under the Wallkill Valley Railroad bridges damaging it. The entire order was cancelled. When I was younger I recall only ever finding one railroad tie still in place and the few bridges over Greenkill and streams that still remain on the ROW from the thruway to Rt 32 to the north. Someplace I have a photocopy of the map of the entire line from Eddyville to Hickorybush and I think it went all the way into Binnewater!

Gail, I have thoroughly enjoyed your website. Currently, my husband and I are the owners of The Hahn Farm in Rosendale. The 67 acre farm has been in the Hahn family since the 1920's. The farm has been sold, and will no longer be in the Hahn family after July, 2005. The Hahn's are in the process of establishing a rescue horse farm in northwest Indiana. I will be sure to keep in touch regarding any historial information from the family farm in Rosendale. I also heard the NPR piece about the Widow Jane Mine this evening. It brought back childhood memories of the late 50's - early 60's, so I was delighted to find your website. My father, Arthur Carver, was a social studies teacher in Poughkeepsie, and big canal buff. I have vivid memories of exploring the caves with him, another teacher and his kids during the summers. I know he probably told me a lot of the history, but I had forgotten almost everything except the limestone kilns and that some of the caves were used for growing mushrooms. And the cold air that wafted out onto the road when we drove by the caves. And the sound of that dripping water. I bet we stopped off at someplace like Gilmartins for lunch. This is a great site--keep up the good work!

I just found this website last night & I love it! My dad bought a trailer in 1963 & added onto it, looks just like a house, as far as i know, its still there, right behind Fann's, I lived behind Fann's from 1963 until 1974, I was 10 years old when we moved. I used to go to Old 32 Lunch for italian ice almost every day, I have a LOT of memories of Rosendale. I also spent a lot of time at Sportsmans Park swimming pool, I also used to go to Sunday school at St. Peter's church. If anyone is till there that remembers the Salerno's behind Fann's, please email me. I would love to come back for a visit some day. deee_40@yahoo.com By the way...EXCELLENT site, I love it!!

What a joy ! Today, found your address through the Portland Cement Association. I had written to them in the hopes they could assist me in obtaining information about my great-great-grandfather, Canvass White. Over the past 40 years I have been collecting information about him and his brother Hugh White. Too, my mother's mother was sarah Snyder and my mother often spoke about Rosendale and Ellenville. Having worked for the Bell Telephone Laboratories for 26 years, and working in the "underground ".I learned that the New York State Highway Dept. concrete highway specs. all must have a % of Rosendale cement in them. Thanks to your association, I have learned more about Hugh White and Canvass. Thanks again, Sincerely, Robert Sayre White II

I enjoyed browsing your Web Page. My grandfather, William Dugan, came to Rosendale from Ireland sometime between 1800 and 1882. He worked in the Cement Mines. His death certificate says that his occupation was "Explosives Foreman". My mother and her brothers and sisters were all born in Rosendale and attended St. Peters School. The family moved to Poughkeepsie sometime between 1910 and 1920. As a child I visited Rosendale many times until my family moved to California in 1956. My mother still had relatives on her mother's side of the family, Connor (O'Connor) living there until 1960.

As a direct decendent of Christopher Snyder, Cottekill, who helped build the Century House for his son A.J.S. and family, it would be nice to see information on the Christopher Snyder House in Cottekill, where AJS retired to when he let his daughter and son in law have the big house and take over the cement company. Documental with the NY State Historical Society. Is marked by NYS marker. Former NYS Historic Director raised in the house and did a history of the house. That shimmering image of the mine is quite wonderful! Perhaps the webpage could be expanded eventually -- more pictures of the mine, and some information about when it started, when it shut down, what mineral is "cement"... and does that shimmering water lead anywhere? All very beautiful and mysterious... and I've never understand the process by which the cement was put into those strange kilns. Did burning wood get mixed up with the with the stones? Sounds messy. - Charles

Hello, My father's family is originally from Rosendale. The O'Neill side of the family were 'off the boat Irish', come to work in the cement mines. The Kavanaugh family had land, they lived across from the Catholic Cemetary. The family house was built by my grandmother's grandfather and father,(just too many grands)and was still standing and occupied in 1994. Last time we visited the home, the then owner of the home exclaimed, "You must be Kavanaugh's, I know the look".

From the time that I was a little boy I came each summer to my grandparents' summer home on Mountain Road in Rosendale for vacation. I can still remember the wonderful feeling that would come over me when we would come close to the place I loved and still love so much. The excitement of reaching the beginning of Mountain Road was only compounded by the further thrill of having to stop there because the steam locomotive was stopped there delivering the area mail. The smell of the burning coal and the train whistle still linger in my mind. How exciting it all was. For years and years I would come to Rosendale with my mom, dad and sister, Renee. In 1969 I was the first of the Mooney family to settle the year round in Rosendale. I became the first police chief in the Village of Rosendale under Mayor Carl Grassi. I remember Dock Vaughn, Clyde Baxter, Anderson's Hardware Store and ate many a meal at The Valley Inn. I remember the enormous crowds that came to Williams Lake Hotel before it burned down in the fifties. Main Street Rosendale was almost impossible to pass through on Sundays back in those days. The traffic was tremendous and parking was allowed on both sides of the street. It was a place that was alive, especially on Saturday nights. It was a very nice place and I shall never forget it. And I shall never forget my grandfather and grandmother, Alfred and Olga Mooney, without whom I might never have known Rosendale, NY. I commend the Historical Society for helping to keep alive the wonderful history of Rosendale.

It is very delightful to know that there is a historical record being kept of Rosendale. This is something that should be cherished by one and all that have any connection to Rosendale. I have seen so many places of forgotten towns and histories in multitude throughout our country. To see a piece of history being preserved tells me that there is still a ray of hope for America. My husband Walter Byer, former and first police chief of the village of Rosendale has many fond memories of the summer home located on Mountain Road, where his sister and brother in law reside today. Their grandparents with whom Walter and Renee lived with as children down in NYC purchased the place on Mountain Road for the family to retreat to every summer. Many happy family times were spent in this quaint house of yesteryear, still standing full of memories to all who know this land and house. This house will remain for all the future genrations of the family to enjoy. "A Piece of History known as "Memory Cottage" so named by Amelia Mooney Byer.

My family had a summer house on creelocks rd. as a youg girl I heard about the mines and looked in the entrances of them with my father but we never went in they looked to dark and scary. A very thorough and enjoyable website. Excellent pictures as well. It took me back to the delightful time I spent in this part of the world several years ago.
