Hi,
I need some serious help. I own the Gigabeat G21 and my harddrive died the other day. I replaced it but I need the entire filesystem or directory for it. When using the Toshiba Audio application it won't convert the files because it doesnt recognize the gigabeat as their mp3 player without the system files. So if please please please someone can send me their entire system directory for their gigabeat I would be in forever debt. I already tried getting the firmware off of the Toshiba Japanese website but it says it requires Windows Xp japanese. If anyone has the files or firmware or any way to get it going, I will owe you the world. My email is kbhatti@gmail.com Thanks KB check the news section, firmware 3.1 is there with explanation on how to install it.

I am largely unimpressed with the sound quality of the G20. Music information seems too compressed and there is no sense of a dynamic, wide soundstage. The Signal-to-Noise Ratio is only listed as >90. The Creative Nomad Zen Xtra 60GB offering runs about $300 on Audiocubes.com--some $200 and change still burning a hole in your pocket. Don't get me wrong--Toshiba is all about smoke and mirrors with a few advanced bells and whistles...but at a price aimed at gadget geeks, not teenagers.
Rating 7.4/10 Hey Pauly, I kinda disagree: the sound quality varies greatly depending on the encoder you use to rip your CDs. I achieve tremendously good quality using EAC (Secure Mode) to rip and Lame 3.90.3 set to -aps-- extreme to encode, if you currently use WMA as compressor or just mp3 at 128kbps, try it!

the gigabeat g20 is my first hd based mp3 player. i personally think the aesthetics are excellent. it looks slick. but, it takes a long time to navigate to a specific song if you have a large amount of music on your mp3 (mine has 1000+ tracks). this is mainly because of the lack of speed navigation. unlike the ipod, scrolling through tracks on the gigabeat is a constant speed and you cannot make it scroll faster or slower. the speed the gigabeat scrolls through the tracks at is a bit too slow. also, my gigabeat (g22)somtimes (at least 3 times in the month ive had it) resets on its own and i have to set the date and time everytime it does this.

After shoppin, researching, and listening to the iPod and Gigabeat side by side numerous times, I deicided to get the Gigabeat cuz the sound quality was a bit better (and the new iPods were outta stock). Just picked up a silver G5 from Yodobashi in Shinjuku nishiguchi yesterday... they have a great deal on the G5s there, 13% points on your point card, and with a free leather case thrown in... all the salesmen try to assure u that u can't use it in English XP... I just agreed with em cuz I didn't wanna bother explaining that there's a great site out there with all kinds of tips/solutions and a link for the old version of the Toshiba Audio App! Thanks dude your site rocks, wouldn't have bought the Gigabeat if this site wasn't around! Cheers.

Hi -
So I've only had my G21 for a few months but in that time I have found it to be much much more stable than my ipod (3rd Gen). I think I reset it once (and I suspect that was not really necessary - was just being impatient). To my shame I have actually dropped in once and it survived intact. Certainly from my experiences I would not have any problem recommending it to anyone. Cheers P.S. Thanks for the reply to my question about USB charging Alex :-)

I really want to buy a G21, but since it's hard to return if there is a problem, I have a few concerns. Among people who've had one for a while, can you tell us:
- how often it crashes - if you've heard of any permanent disk failure - if it's okay to go jogging with it (assuming you're holding it in your hand). Thanks a lot! Alex, your website is fantastic! Thanks for doing so much work - Toshiba owes you a few Gibageats!!! Tom

So if the new Gigabeat models support charging via USB does this mean that the older models (i.e. G21) do not?
I ask this because I bought a cable during my last trip to Japan which plugs into the USB port on my laptop and it certainly makes the charging light on the G21 come on. However I have been too scared to leave it plugged in for any length of time to see if it will actually charge the unit completely. Anyone have any ideas... I am specifically worried about damaging the battery in some way... Many thanks for all the site updates - love your work! Relax Joe! The new gigabeat models will support charging natively with the standard USB cable, which means that the gigabeats will charge while transferring songs for exemple. For older models, establishing a USB-USB connection doesn't charge the units. However, with a USB-AC cable like the one you seem to have, you can charge it safely. I hope that answers your question.

Hi again,
Well now got my Gigabeat G21 from Audiocubes, very confusing to work out at first being Japanese and all, but very impressed and highly recommend others buying it from them - www.audiocubes.com I paid in USD to be delivered to the UK, as it was cheaper than paying in GBP and it arrived with no necessary customs payments at a cost of £303 at current time. I have started writing a very detailed review of it, which I will send off to Alex within a week or so. I intend to include a load of pictures comparing Gigabeat with iPod 20GB, iPod 40GB, and an iPod Mini so everyone can see it size wise. Alex, please can you mail me at the address above to let me know if it will be alright to send over a lot of pictures to you of this :) Thanks for all the help, and again for putting up such a useful website!!! Hi,
Firstly, a huge congratulations on such a wonderful Gigabeat website! You've turned me away from my Mini iPod and towards a Gigabeat G21, which I have ordered from Audio Cubes this evening. Now in preparation for the arrival of my new toy, I wanted to see where I could get to in terms of Toshiba's Audio Applications. Is installing V3 a stupid idea as I am not clear what the computer's outcome is after installing it? Or is it better to stick with TAA2? - In which case, where can one get hold of TAA2 as I can't find it anywhere! Probably cos I can't speak Japanese :) Thanks in advance, Tim Burton Hey Tim, you can find TAA2 here : http://perso.club-internet.fr/alcahest/perso/g20/dl/TAA2.zip

I'm not sure what the exact specification is but I should have said in my review that the volume level is not great. It is loud enough but only just - it would be nice to have a little more volume particularly on MP3's ripped from older CDs which tend to be mastered at a lower volume level.
But then again European versions of the iPod suffer from the same problem which is why there are various volume boost software programs available for the iPod...
