I first met you during the worst ice storm we have ever seen in these parts (Lafayette, La.)You know the one when the church we held worship in decided not to let you sing the night you came to town, Thank God for the Luthern Church who let you sing. Then I moved and lo and behold you had a concert in Arlington Tx. where I had recently moved. Years went by then I happened to be in Los Angles when the UFMCC Building was opened, With my job I was travling all over the place, God timed it just right for me to be there for that awesome day. Thanks for coming to Tacoma for the dedication of the new MCC sanctuary. I am a straight (bi-curious?) UCC minister, working for many years in public sector mental health. I helped MCC - Seattle get started by offering them the sanctuary of the Capitol Hill United Methodist Church for their services. The Broadway Theatre renegged on their agreement when they discovered that MCC meant "those people." I recall many a Sunday evening, sitting in my study of the parsonage, listening to the joyful singing, our wonderful pipe organ being played better than ever and the "tickling of the ivories" on our Steinway. I was uplifted by the entire service, but your music was at the heart of my worship that morning. Please come back to the Pacific Northwest soon. Warmly . . . Larry Baker |

I must say, I struggle with the depression of being gay and whether or not you are not going against God. Living in a highly concentrated area of Mormons, where Conservatism reigns, I do not have much support. I saw you in Oregon a couple of months ago - I am the woman whose 3 year old grand daughter ran up the ailse during your last song :-) My personal journey has been extremely turmultuous and seeing you sing about your love of Jesus and speaking to me ministered to me in such a deep way! It was such an incredible blessing to know that I and my partner are not the only ones who are lesbian and are still in love with Jesus! I was raised Nazarene and have been a practicing Four Square/Pentacostal Christian all my adult life. My partner is the daughter of a Baptist Minister and now finds solice in interfaith and Quaker meetings. You can imagine that our finding each other and then finding you together was also such an incredible blessing! It was good meeting you at MCC San Diego recently and I was so touched by the music you presented. I know there is a place for me now in God's Kingdom...I was beginning to have a lot of doubts, since currently I work at and minister musically at The Salvation Army in Chula Vista. My mother and her partner - or should I say "my mothers"? - are devout Christians who have faced a lot of discrimination since they fell in love four years ago, and still have to be very discreet in certain situations. Recently I have been taking them to my church, which is open and affirming, so they can feel comfortable worshiping God again in the presence of others. In the meantime the good work of people like you may eventually bring about a society in which they can publicly acknowledge their love in the presence of God's people. Keep up the good work! |

Just wanted to thank both of you agian for coming to Open Door yesterday. It was amazing!!!! God is diffently blessing your ministry. When you sang "For Those Tears", I couldn't believe the emotions it brought up for me. I remember listening to that song for the first time back in the mid-70's. I had no idea what it was about for the songwriter. But I remember just crying & crying over it. Wanting to believe that God could forgive and love me again after experiencing my first lesbian love. This was at a Nazarene College, which didn't help the whole shame and guilt thing. I've been attending Open Door for a pretty short time. Sometimes it's just amazing to see people professing to be Christian and lesbian/gay. Sometimes the old tapes will start playing in my head when I'm sitting in church. Then the whole fear and guilt thing is right back in my head. Do you think that ever goes away? Anyway, thanks again for just being willing to be used by the Lord!!! Grace |

Dear Marsha and Cindy, Thank you for your terrific performance and presence at the UFMCC in Rochester, NY. The Holy Spirit is really working through your efforts and is Blessing me'real good'as I continue to listen to and sing with your soul healing music. I hope that you enjoyed your time here in Rochester and that you both were Blessed by the experience too. My background is that I originally was raised Methodist. Went to Sunday school and church every week and of course Vacation Bible school. Was in the Junior Choir there and grew to know and love God in a big way through song. My church was very big on lots of hymn singing to energize everyone. I took the lyrics very seriously and connected to God through them as well as the music itself. Even early in high school I began to realize that the 'difference' I had been aware of for years was that I was probably lesbian. Through good friends, I switched from the Methodist church and an early child-like, simple but strong connection with God, into what I believed was a more mature, scripture based, growing evolving faith, taught at an independent 'Bible church'. There I learned to pray and begged God to heal me so that I'd awaken some morning either straight,asexual or not at all. Eventually, because I could see no way to live a Christ pleasing life as a lesbian,I began to think that suicide was the only answer. I reasoned that, if what felt like a natural God-given gift of love to me, was actually a sin then what was the point in anything. I eventually believed that death was preferable to being a living Christian 'abomination'. (Today I'm grateful to my Mother God that the suicide attempt failed.) In college these same life-destroying, soul crippling and abusive thoughts continued although I immersed myself in Campus Crusade for Christ, Catholic folk mass and participated in evangelism using 'The Four Spiritual Laws'. As you have probably heard thousands of times all of this did quite a bit of serious internal damage as 'friends' began to confront me about being lesbian 'for my own good' while using all the 'clobber passages' in the Bible and planned to have me separated from the church. Even though, thank God,I eventually found UFMCC and then a More Light Presbyterian church, so much of the pain from the religious abuse is still there. Thanks for helping to heal some more of this deep hurt and for reminding me that I can continue to Dig My Own Well 'cause the water don't belong to them'. Also thanks for the assurance that I'm communicating with the Real One. (Is this the Real You? is a great song.) More than anything I want to thank you both for sharing the real you and your phenomenal gifts with folks like me around the country. Thank you for your honesty about the struggles in your own lives and thank you for modelling a sincere Christian response to those who hate us. We need you so much more than Billy Graham ever could. Seriously! You are providing spiritual music therapy for the soul and answers to a lifetime of prayers for so many GLBT people. Let's pray for one another as your ministry and love from God is poured out through your gifts of song and ability to connect with people. I will continue to support your efforts.
