| Oh my goodness! I absolutely love your horses! I also love your dedication to them; especially to your mare (i apologize I forgot her name) that you had to unfortunately put down. I'm only 18 and have a lot to learn about horses but I have been around them since the time I was 4 until now where I am taking lessons in both english and western. Someday I hope to own a farm close to that of yours and you have truly inspired me to become more aware of the horses surrounding me. I do not own my own horse, due to the fact my father would rather have me become a lawyer or doctor rather than paying for a "dumb" horse. But horses are my passion and I am now even more inspired by your dedication to horses and I will continue to keep my head up and pursue my dreams. THANK YOU for being an eye opener to me. I really appreciate it.

| I currently own a arab cross quarter horse named major who has melanomas covering his tail bone and under his tail close to his anus he also has some growing in his sheath these are much smaller but seem to irritate him much more he has had them for years just in the past year one grew under his tail close to his anus it was infected and was bothering him quite a bit i had the vet come out and give me an opinion she told me that i should have him put to sleep I couldnt even fathem doing this all over an infected melanoma Over a couple of weeks cleaning and keeping an eye on it it shrunk and the melanoma seems to be better winter was here now and he is going on 24 I put him on hay strethcher and got him through the winter he had lost a lot of weight well everyone told me to just save him and myself grief and put him down I coulndnt do it he was eating, drinking, peeing, pooping and was in pretty good spirits so i had another vet come out and give me there opinion I was ready for the worst She examined him asked the typical questiones and told me there was no reason to have him put down he gained back a lot of weight since being on grass all day every day for a couple of months and the melanomas were staying the same the told me to keep them clean and to keep a good eye like i have been and hopefully he will make it another ten years without any episodes I sure hope so thats all we can do sometimes I am not against using medication in the right case this case I dont feel it would make to much of a difference they have stayed the same size for years that I do not want to put him through any more than I have to I just want him to enjoy his years left with us and my children and I to keep learning from such a magnificent animal he has gotten me through a lot of good and bad times I just hope he feel the same way. thank you for letting me tell my story I have looked for information about melanomas there is nothing out there this site has definetly helped me a great deal thank you again. | |

| I loved your article of your beloved mare. The information is very important. I found a small tumor on my big grey Thoroughbred gelding a few months ago,the size of a quarter, and planned on getting it removed asap. I have my vet coming out this week. I thought and heard the same it is a grey horse thing. Al just turned 14 May 14th. I have had him since he was 4.I also just got my first PSP Dario,he just turned 1. I have always adored the breed. I have more horses of different breeds whom i love dearly, and will keep a check on all of them as well.
Thank you so much, Tracy |

| Thank you for giving information on melanomas & a site for horse lovers to share their experiences. My connemara x Hendrix has a melanoma under his tail but the vet gave no hope of any treatment. At least now I can do something about it. I am giving cimetidine tablets soaked in apple juice then mixed in his feed which he eats happily. I wish you well with your lovely horses & will give you an update WHEN (hopefully) this works. Very many thanks for sharing & caring Linda (in England) | |

I still cherish my picture of us from 1995 when he won Res.Champion halter in Rancho Murrietta, CA. we only lost top of the class because I didn't want to roach that beautiful mane and tail of his for the traditional look! I'm glad the Joffe's didn't either! God Bless you!

| I just lost my gray anglo-arab mare on Jan.14, 2008. She was 22 and had melanomas. We tried the cimetidine way back when and it didn't seem to have much of an effect. She had rather large melanomas at her throat latch on both sides. In her last 3 years she had some minor gas colics. Then on Jan.14 she had a very severe attack that we couldn't control for her. The vet suspected an internal melanoma that got wrapped around and intestine.
She was a huge part of me and took a piece of me with her that day. I will miss her teribbly forever. Gail Griffin |

| Thank you for your information on this melanoma treatment. My vet dismissed it, but it stopped the growth of the tumors, and I stole an extra 3 years from death to spend with my cherished gray horse.
the cost of the cimetidine is so low when purchased generically, its so so cheap. While it won't help everyone, when it does, it is life changing. It is worth the try. It took me and my grand old horse to a show in his 28th year. Yes, he ribboned. I am so blessed to have had that extra time. Ironically, it wasnt' the melanomas that took him, it was a trauma from trying to steal feed from his pony friend that caused his death. Don't give up looking for solutions. There are many options, and we, as the caretakers of these animals, have enough love to explore every option. |

| My andalusian mare is 9 years old. I have found a few bumps about the size of a bb under her tail about 4 weeks ago. We will be going to the University of Fla next Friday, mostly thanks to your web page. They have several different ways to attack melanoma now. We will be trying the frankenscence oil injections. It's research done by Virginia tech. Dr. Robertson seems to be a very nice person and I think we have caught this in a timely fashion. Wish us luck, Sally | |

| Thank you for providing your deeply emotional story to all of us so that we might learn something from your experience. We lost our 11 year old Missouri Fox Trotter to Melanoma in 2003. She was gray, and had begun growing small Melanomas on her withers and jugular groove when she was around 5 years old. We also attempted treatment with Cimetidine. We infortunately did not have great success. Our veterinarian advised us that it would be impossible to excise or debulk the tumor next to her jugular because of it's location. She survived for about a year, and when she started having more bad days than good, the decision was made to humanely euthanize her. It had gotten to the point that she was unable to walk around without getting totally exhausted. You could actually see the blood having to bypass the large tumor next to her jugular. The weird thing about her tumor, is that it was below the surface, it looked like she had been simply kicked in the neck. Anyway, we will miss her always. She was the sweetest horse. I just purchased a 2 year old Tennessee Walker, who just happens to be gray. I will be ever vigilant with him, and if he happens to get a melanoma, I will know what to ask now. Thank you-Jennifer | |

| Wow! What beautiful horses you have! I have a grey nineteen year old Quarter Horse mare who has some melanomas on her tail. They are not large, but are numerous. Two vets have looked at her and seem very unconcerned and didn't recommend any treatment. She is currently carrying a foal and is due in February. I cannot find any information on giving cimetidine to pregnant mares. Do you have any knowlege of this? Also, after she foals and weans, what would be the typical dosage if I decided to treat her then? She probably weighs 1100 pounds. I wanted to suggest, as well, to other horsey folks crushing pills to give their horses: try mixing crushed pills with Karo Syrup. This makes medication not only more palatable for the horse, but a little tougher for them to spit it out. Thanks for crusading for the welfare of the horse! Look forward to hearing from you. | |

| Thank you so much for your information - I'm so sorry for your loss. I am however so grateful to have run across your website. My grey TB/Quarter horse gelding (just 2 days ago) was found to have 7 small pea-sized melanomas on his genitals (found during a sheath cleaning by his vet). I thought he only had one (found a few years ago just under his tail, pea-sized as well). The one under his tail hasn't grown and I'd gotten used to it but these new ones are upsetting. My boy is 17 and my love. I'd do anything for him but it seems everyone I've spoken to about "greys and melanomas" act like I should just prepare myself for the worst - that there's nothing I can do. When I tried in the past to ask about treatment options (with his vet as well), I'd get a lot of sideways looks as if to say, "what an idiot", or "doesn't she know her horse is doomed?". Discouraged, I had stopped asking, but with these new melanomas I felt a little surfing of the net was in order and would at least prove once and for all that there was indeed, nothing I could do. THANK YOU FOR SHOWING ME THE OPPOSITE!:):):) I've just sent an email to his vet concerning Cimetidine. If I don't like his response, there are other vets in the sea, so to speak. Thank you for being the 1st person I've heard from telling me it's ok to fight for my boy and to not give up. We both appreciate it! | |

I grew up in Puerto Rico as a child and was exposed to Paso Fino's mostly and hope some day I will be able to own one of your majestic horses. I did alot of dressage training in my 20's at Morven Park International Esquestrian Institute and cannot wait to get back into the beautiful art of dressage. Your story regarding Lily was heartbreaking and I hope you and your horses never have to go through that pain again. I hope to contact you in the future and perhaps purchase a champion of my own.

| My horse has had melanomas for a long time. She has a large one right between the cheeks of her rump. I had my vet look at it and her other varios small ones that she has, and he told me that removing them or doing anything about it could prove to be worse for her than better. But after reading this, I wonder if perhaps I should do this for her. She is my first horse, and as I tell most people she is the other half of myself. I have no idea what I would do if I lost her. After reading about your mare, i now am wondering if I should look into that medicine. I dont make a lot, and i might not be able to afford it. But I believe that I will look into it. I'm very glad that I ventured onto this website. It has really been enlightening.

| Don't give up on Lily. You are all doing well.
Why not try some Castor Oil warm poultice underneath each splint. Use flannel cotton, lots of Castor Oil, nuke it for a minute, then wrap the leg before you put the splint on. Castor Oil has amazing curative powers. Right now I'm using it on a tumour I have, and it is going away. As I've mentioned in earlier emails, I have cured other horses of many ailments with this oil. For sure, it will do no harm. Keep up your spirits! Cathy |

| I am so moved by the story of Garbosa and your difficulty with melanoma cancerous tumours. When my mare was 3 she developed a sarcoid tumour behind her left front elbow...just where the girth sits. I had a vet remove it right away and send it for biopsy. While the tumour may not have led to death, it rendered my Destry unrideable. When the sarcoid grew back the size of a piece of cauliflower, I too, did my own research. Trusting in God and research I had done on alternative healing methods, I applied hot poultices of castor oil, using the methods I had read...the oil must be poured on natural fibre such as cotton or wool. The vet saw the size of the returned sarcoid BEFORE I started my home remedy and just shook his head, saying "There's nothing else I can do for your mare." But I persisted for three months, finding unique ways to cut up cotton sheets to secure the poutice in place. Destry looked like she was wearing a white cotton breast collar and saddle for driving! At the end of three months, not only was the tumour gone, but there is little or no evidence of scaring, even from the initial surgery. I urge readers to investigate the healing powers of castor oil, or look it up under the writings of Edgar Cayce. "The Cayce readings recommend castor oil packs to improve assimilations, eliminations and circulation (especially of the lymphatic system). Although this therapy may seem unusual, it is one of the best documented of the Cayce therapies." I have subsequently used these poutices on my own chest to cure pneumonia and bronchitis. I have also used them on horses that were seized and given to me to nurse. One gangerous open wound on the leg of a chestnut mare who had been badly abused, cleared up beautifully - again with no scar. I have never tried this on melanomas -so consider this in your research. My Destry is now 21 and in perfect health - looking 10 years younger than she is. She enjoys a life of leisure and is sometimes used as a lesson horse, and can be driven, trail ridden, and carry a baby quietly. I am so sorry for your loss of Garbosa. Having lost my first horse prematurely, and three loving dogs, I share your grief. But they are not gone from us, they are as close as a thought or a prayer. | |

| Hi
I'm from South Africa. My 1st pure-bred mare died from the dreaded African Horse Sickness. I was devastated and considered giving up on horses, this was hard because my mares colt was only 5months old and needed special care. Aryan Nazarina, a 10year old grey Arab mare stole my heart and i had to get her. The cath was that she was wild and would rear for and at everything. I stared her training and the other day was the first time that I could give her a thorough inspection. She has a Melonoma the size of a golf ball just infront of her udder & a couple developing next to it. She also has a splint on the left fore, and old hip injury and possibly has wolf teeth. In other words i have been taken for a ride. I dont want to give up on her because she has crept into my heart. she has the most amazing temperament and she is even rideable. She hasn't reared in weeks. Should I have the melonomas cut or leave them as the have been there for who knows how long? I would'nt survive losing another great horse. |

| I just wanted to say your page on Garbosa truely touched me deep down in my heart and with tears and a smile I think of the horses that have touched my life and made me the person I am today. It is true that these magnificent creatures, if allowed, will brighten the life of anyone and you have captured that in her page. God Bless and keep those Unicorns shining! It's funny, my four year old saw the pictures and asked if she was a unicorn, how ironic that you wrote it in your story. | |

| I just wanted to say, that on a whim, (after seeing Andalusians in the Tournament of Roses Parade) I found your website. I have to say, that since before I can remember I have loved horses. My family was very poor, but my daddy and mom would get me horse books when they could afford it. For a few years after high school I took English Hunt lessons (shocked my family) and I have always dreamed of someday owning a horse. My life is filled with animals, both my own and the ones I find along the way as my brothers. I am not in a position to get one yet, but I had to tell you that I loved the heart you put in your website and for your 4 legged family members. If and when I am ready and able, I hope to come back to you and get one of yours. It is wonderful to see someone with such heart and love for God's furry creatures. You must be Native.
thanks Diana |

From the sound of it you may have blessed me with many more years with my favorite Arabian mare Kiz. I got her seven years ago, as a WILD two year old, and we have developed a bond of trust that amazes me. I found tail lumps a few weeks ago, and it sounds like I may now have the knowledge to beat this thing. I have watched for the lumps more dilligently than I check myself. Knowing that with three greys I would have to face them sooner or later. It was something that my mentor had shown me, and told me of, but that was 25 years ago. I guess that this issue has been slow to be addressed, but your information gives me great hope. Thank you so much, over and over again. Wendy |

| I can't say enough how you have just helped me and a horse I love so very dearly. My Arabian has Melenoma Cancer and I have been told repeatedly that there is nothing I can do for him. I have also watched Melanoma Cancer take the life of one of our family Arabian Stallions. I too have heard it is only in "Greys" and been told it is only in certain breeds. My Arabian has just begun to develop Melanoma and I hope this can help save his life and allow him to grow to a ripe old age and be my best friends that much longer. Thank you, thank you so very much!

Not being armed with information for our horses is as bad as going to the doctor and not researching your own illness. Inform yourself and find a vet that wants to listen and asks for imput, all while being able to find a treatement that is the best available.

| hi,
The Don Marco gelding I was looking at is finally mine. His sire Don Marco does passon his temperment and patience, people loving qualities. He too stands for braiding, and very well for the farrier at feeding time. We did our first foot trim today and it was just at the time I usually feed him. He is a lovely horse, some day I would like to meet Don Marco. But when I go to the barn and see my little "Marco" I feel like his sire is right there with me. I love him very much. He is an awesome horse. Susan Miller |

| I have a very special grey mare, a Morab who is only 12 years old. Yesterday at the vet check (she is an awesome endurance horse and has carried me through thick and thin- I trust her completely), he noticed melanomas on her tail. I will take Melody into an excellent vet right away. Wish us well! Wendy and Melody | |

| Malibu K, is the son of my beautiful mare Estrella. She was leased out to stud in Vancover, WA to Linda Burguess. Malbu was the offspring of this encounter. Malibu K was lost to me by a very conning woman. She purchased Estrella with the agreement that the foal in utero was to be mine. She immediately sold Estrella when she arrived in San Fernando Valley to Malibu Ranch. I lost my beautiful foal. I have followed him thru the years and watched him become the wonderful horse that he is. I am thankful that he has found this wonderful home in Oregon. | |

| Dear Nia,
I was looking on line, yet again, for information about equine melanomas and for others who have gone through what I am going through. I was very moved by your story of Garbosa. My Pandora is a half sister to your Garbosa. My precious Pandora is a double granddaughter of Legionario III and her sire was also Leopardo II (ex. Mercedes). She will be 23 years old on April 3 of this year, but has the spirit of a filly. She's owned me since she was 7. She too suffers from the dreaded tumors. I did find out about Cimetidine many years ago and have had Pandora on the medication. Her tumors have continued to grow despite my care. In desperation I contacted Dr. Ann Jeglum (739 E. Nield St., West Chester PA, (610) 692-8990). She is doing research on the vaccines made from the horse's own melanomas. (There are others at UC Davis who are also doing this research, but the Davis people never answered my e-mails...Dr. Jeglum was on the other end of the line within minutes of my call.) I went through this treatment beginning last summer. My vet received detailed instructions from Dr. Jeglum's lab and excise 3 tumors from various parts of her body. These were shipped in specially prepared refrigerated packages to Pennsylvania. The vaccines would arrive on a regular schedule from PA to my wonderful vet, Dr. Sylvia Greenman, here in Southern California, and she would administer the vaccines. Unfortunately, the treatment didn't work for Pandora, but I want others to know about it because it has worked miracles for some horses. Every day I have with her is precious. I know her time is short given the most recent progression of this disease, but my "Walt Disney Pony" continues to bring joy to all who see her and know her. Thank you for your web site. I see it as a type of support group for those of us who are going through the same thing. God bless you, Kim Lindsey |

| Hi,
I was looking into purchasing a lovely andalusian mare that I fell in love with, however, she is only 9 and has two (that you can see) melanomas. She had colic surgery a few years back and I have after careful thought, to pass on this mare. I spoke with a lady that does TCM and she said that if it were her, she would be afraid of the underlying problems. Maybe the colic incident was just a pre-warining of her condition. I felt my heart break for you even though I'm not owned by an andalusian, yet, I am owned by 3 QH, 1 Paint and 1 gaited, they all are my loves just as your mare was to you. Thank you for this information on melanomas, and I will keep looking for my dream horse. God bless, candy |

| Hi,My daughters horse TB gelding has a big melanoma tumor on his hind end. It's has gotten bigger since we started giving him the Essiac tea,red clover, and cleaver. I have been told that the tumors will get bigger before they leave. I had read on some site that a person who's horse had the same as ours ,gave the tea and the tumors had gone in 6 months. Even though our horse's attitude is good, I'm concerned about the tumor. So I'm looking to see what's out there. If you have any info I would really appreciate it. Thanks,

| I read your article on Garbosa and know how you feel. My beloved 18 yr old Thoroughbred gelding has just been diagnosed with internal maligant melanoma and they give him a few months. His quality of life right now is very good, only symptom he has is spiking a fever everyday but other than that he has a great appetite (even when temp is 104--105) and is bright and alert. I am heart broken but with all his external melanomas, I knew deep down that this day would eventually come. I did have laser surgery done 2 years ago on the external melamonas that were around his rectum and the surgery was very successful. I am just going to cherish every day that I have with him and make sure that he is as comfortable and happy as possible. This will truly be one of the hardest things to do when I have to make the decision that his time to rest in peace has come. | |

| I have a six year old medium welsh gray pony with what appears to be a melanoma on his medial upper thigh. It is about 4cm, shiny black, firm. I am a dermatologist (for humans primarily) and I would just like to laser it off or excise it or even just have it biopsied. I have generic cimetidine 800mg and I am ready to at least start that but I do not know the the best dose to start with. Do you have a suggested dose?
Thanks for your website. I am interested in your supplement. I live in the hurricane stricken Louisiana. The humans and horses are well. |

| Hello Nia. I'm sorry if this whole thing sounds stupid i cant really think of anything good enough to say but i'm almost 17 years old and i'm a horse owner myself. I dont have andalusians but i have quarter horses, saddle horses, mules and donkeys. I have a mare that is very dear to me like yours was. My quarter mare honey. I bought Honey from a man who did not take care of her at all. He let just anyone ride her and i do believe it resulted in the slight limp she has today. I think he let one of the boys run her into something. When we first got her, it appeared she had thrown all four of her shoes but much to our suprise when the amish farrier started filing down we discovered the shoes were imbeded in the hoof. The cruel man had left the shoes on from the summer before and for some reason they just didnt come off like they do usually. It was so bad she is lucky to not be foundered. Well she was underweight and her hair didnt have the shine it should. She also had severe lice. The man also lost her papers so we have no way of registering her, but looking at her you can tell she is a pure bred quarter mare. After months of hard work and a lot of love Honey has completely came out of the woods and turned into an absolutely goregous red line back dun mare. Shes about 15.2 hands and maybe 1250lbs could be a little heavier. She is extremely well tempered. Infact my little brother can ride her bareback all around. ( He's only 10 and never has had much to do with horses.) We also let the children from my grandpas church and my friends who have never been on a horse ride her. Her most sensitive passenger was the pastors diabled daughter who rode Honey and was over run with delight. I love my mare so much and i know what its like to lose a good horse. I've lost some before. I just wanted to share my story and give you my sympathy for the loss of yours. I wish you the best of luck with her legacy and the other horses. Feel free to email me anytime.

| I am very touched by your web pages--I lost my mixed breed "once-in-life" equine companion of 35 years last year, and have been struggling with how or if to try finding another to take his place.
It was fate that brought us together, and four other horses later, I knew we had something very special between us.He stayed--they went...grin. Qrter/morgan/thoro/mustang 16 hand gruella dun gelding who KNEW he was a stud! He taught me how to be a whole human being, and a responsible adult..not an easy task. What I want, is him again...in whatever form or breed. However, I have my own private image in mind--Varvra's book published years ago that featured that fabulous Andalusion stallion in the field of red poppies {?] has always been my secret dream. I have ALWAYS been in awe of the Andalusian--I have ridden bareback and indian style [grin], english, western, jumping, cross country, endurance, trained race horses, done dressage with some of the top riders in California, and what I want now is to have JUST that wonderous one on one relationship with a unique individual equine friend again. Don't want much do I? Your pages show me much the same appreciation and awareness...for that, my extreme thanks! I don't know what the immediate future holds for me..at 56, and soon to be divorced, with a fair "severance package", no kids, and a wide open future, I am trying to figure out where to go [out of CAL> for sure!] and what to do with myself after I get there. But one thing I know for sure--there WILL be a 'special' horse in it. When that time comes, I hope I can find her or him on your farm. It's just so hard to have to wait..sigh! Thanks again! | Thank you, thank you, thank you for your information concerning the use of cimetidine in treating melanoma. My 20 yo grey gelding has had these tumors for years but only recently have they become more active & started to multiply. After reading the story about your beautiful horse, I immediately contacted our vet & discussed treating "Mana" with Tagamet, he then contacted his wholesaler & they whipped up a 2 month supply in LIQUID form, with a molassis flavor. We have no problem with him taking his medication & the cost is so much cheaper than I could find anywhere else. He's only been on it for about 10 days but I could swear the lesions under his tail have become smaller already. Will keep you posted on his progress.

| I have a 19 year old partbred andalusian gelding, bay in colour, who has had numerous operations to remove sarcoids, and several masocytomas. These ranged from the shoulder, throat and gaskin. The most agresssive was five years ago with a malignant tumor that grew on the end of his penis and almost stopped him urinating within days. This would have hardly been noticed if he wasn't so meticulus with his motions! He never likes to splash himself! His operation to remove the tumor and three inches of his penis, resulting in reconstruction, was extremely successfull. He urinates through a new purposely fashioned urethra. Within 6 months another tumor appeared on the front of his hock joint which rapidly grew to to the size approx 1 inch in diameter, still covered with coat and not angry. I was advised by several vets not to remove it as it was located right in the joint. This has not changed in size for three years, but i'm not willing to take the chance.
By chance I was looking at some websites at lunchtime and came across this site - I'll definately be doing some more research into "Cimetidine". Thankyou for posting this. I would be grateful if any further correspondence or any information, however small. Thanks! |

| Thank you for providing such a beautiful website. I only wish I discovered it earlier. I had a 12.2 grey gelding for 4 years. He had a lump the size of a golf ball on his neck - my vet told me to ignore it as removing it would be fatal. The lump grew to the size of a tennis ball and he developed smaller lumps under his tail and on his sheath. He eventually lost all co-ordination in his back legs and had to be put to sleep last July. There was no talk about possible cures. If I saw your website earlier, he might still be with us! Keep up the good work. | |
