| Comments: | Wonderful site! My great-great grandfather, Josiah James Morefield was one of the lucky who "survived" Andersonville. He was marched to the prisoner exchange only to be too late in the list for the 6pm cutoff. He fell out of line on the march back to Andersonville and slowly made his way back to his company near Atlanta. I have a copy of his memories of his time and subsequent "escape" that are intriguing! I have to do a presentation in my History class and have found a font of information here. Thank you so much for your hard work and effort.

While imprisoned, his arm was amputated and he somehow survived. His records say he was ex(exchanged?) TN NOV 14, 1864. This day and age we have things so ridiculously easy and we often forget all our forefathers had to sacrifice. Thank you for your interesting site. |

I would like to express my gratitude for all the research you have completed concerning Andersonville Prison. Your site reflects a great deal of compassion for all those precious souls that endured Andersonville. I have recently located several books on Andersonville and have absorbed the information like a bee to honey. I am not certain why this consumes me, perhaps knowing my ggg grandfather was a prisoner there. It breaks my heart to realize what he and other soldiers had to endure. Thank you for all your hard work in creating and maintaining this memorial to all those who entered those gates at Andersonville during 1864/65. Best Regards from a proud great great great grand daughter of Jackson Justice, Martha Carol |

His grave marker number is: 6053. This is only ancestor that I found that was actually in Andersonville and died there as a result of Wirz's misbehavior of the Union troops that had been captured. and sent there. Like those that saw Wirz on the gallows, I will too chant "Andersonville" for my deceased ancestor. Justice has been served. RIP Samuel Layton. |

| Comments: | This is one of the best Civil War sites I have ever visited.
I live in Texas but I was born and raised up around Syracuse, New York. Not far from where I lived a very tragic event took place during the Civil War. There was a POW camp for Confederate Soldiers. The prison was and old delapitated ship that they draged into an inlit that was a flood area that would catch excess water that would run off from the locks on the old Erie Canal System. They anchored her out in the middle of this inlit. They put about Two hundred POW's on that leaky tub. It was one big hell hole. One night there was one hell of a storm come in with high winds and heavy rains the guards left the ship and never looked back. You could hear the prisoners screaming and yelling for help but no one lifted a finger to help them. The ship didn't last long in that storm it took in water and sank the majority of the POW drowned. I remember as a young boy my father took me out there to show me the place. It was nothing but a swamp than but there where graves scattered all around the edge of that big mud hole as they buried the POW exactly where they where found. No crosses, no head stones no nothing it was still like that the last time I was there that was 1960. |

| Comments: | I am a native Floridian, and a true Son of the South. I am fascinated about studying the war between the States. The loss of life and all of the causualties were simply horrendous. Mr.Fry's page has truly been a blessing to me.
I served in the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant 1965-67. All I can say is that any country who is foolish enough to challengh this United States of America with their military would be very foolish. From 1861-1865, we killed one another, but together as The United States I know of no one who would even be crazy enough to challenge us as did Japan and Germany. May God always bless The United States of America. What happenened in 1861-1865 was simply too horrible to ever really understand. Out of all of that catastrophe however grew the greatest nation on the face of the earth. 7/27/2002 To God be the Glory, Dewey B. McKinney mckinney_v@firn.edu |

| Comments: | My husband and I are full-time travelling in the States. We called at Andersonville on our way down to Florida. I just want to say that as I was walking over the site of the camp I felt someone walking with me. The feeling was so strong that I mentally asked who they were. A voice came into my head, "My name is Charles Bingham and I died here." I was so taken aback that I thought it was my imagination. Later I decided to check the internet. I found this site and did a search for Charles Bingham. I found him. He died of dysentry in 1864 at the camp. I am so moved by this experience that I would like to return to the site. Thank you Kevin for the photos and the wonderful response you gave me. I thought you'd think I was nuts, but you didn't. I much appreciate your dedication to Andersonville and I feel you have an affinity with the men who died there. |

My GG Grandfather survived Andersonville, along with his brother. They were both in the 17th Iowa Regiment Co. B. His Name was George Michael Kahler (Koehler) and his brother was Michael Kahler. There is no record of Michael at Andersonville, but my grandfather (as a boy) found his grandfather George Michael in the shed crying. When he asked him what was wrong, GMK explained that he was thinking of the war, and it made him sad what he saw. Then he proceeded and told him about finding his brother at the bottom of a "dead man pile". He supposedly, nursed him back to health, and they both survived Andersonville, according to the story. Great site! Gretchen |

I sure hope to find out as much as I possibly can about our great grandfather. We know that he was commissioned Captain on June 1, 1865 and mustered out of the service with the company on June 25, 1865 as a veteran. His youngest granddaughter was born on May 5, 1917. He died in 1915, in Minersville, Penna.

| Comments: | This is a wonderful service you are providing. I first visited Andersonville in 1963, and even though I had no ancestors there, I was drawn back several more times. The prison pen was just long dead history but there was something eerie and chilling about the cemetery. One time I took my children along hoping to give them a history lesson. I will never forget the look on my 4-year-old daughter's face when she saw the seemingly endless headstones. She shook her head and just kept saying, too many - too many. I think she expressed it perfectly.

| Comments: | Excellent website! I shall recommend it to my relatives. Just this week, my parents, sister, and I went to KY to see the grave of my great-great-grandfather, John B. Dooley, of the KY 4th regiment. He was captured on 7/30/1864, sent to Andersonville during the height of the deplorable and inhumane conditions, then released on 4/1/1865. He died 3 years later from medical/physical problems caused by his confinement at Andersonville. He was 26 and left behind his wife and two young sons, my great-grandfather being only 2 weeks old. His grave was recently found on a former family cemetery in KY. The fence had been torn down to allow the current owner's cattle to trample all over his and the others' graves. His tombstone was in poor condition and in two pieces. He basically gave his life for this great country and to keep the union whole, and his grave was in such sad shape. He is found now and is considered a hero in the family. Thank you for reminding all of us of what the heroes of the Civil War had to endure for their convictions. Just as they say of the Holocaust, "never forget." I am so proud to be a great-great-granddaughter of that good Union corporal and POW, James B. Dooley. Maybe someday I can go down south and see Andersonville for myself. Thank you so much for your good work! |

| Comments: | My compliments on your absolutely generous offer to the descendants of Andersonville, and on your great website. You’re one of a kind, that dedicated, hardworking volunteer/historian/genealogist/websitebuilder person I’m in awe of. I had to tell you thank you even though I’ve no one died in that prison. I do have Tennessee links to the brothers vs brothers soldiers, though. My Reed family fought on opposite sides. Your civil war help links are super and your work is so great I’m going to find a place to put a link on a UDC local group I’m building a page for.
Thank you, thank you, for all that hard work, all those hours, and all the help you’ve offered to everyone of us. I "wish" you many, many visitors! You deserve the awards you've earned, and more of them. |

| Comments: | Aloha from Hawaii!
My great grandaddy, John Strawn of Crump, Hardin County, TN, was a private in Phillip's Lt. Artillery Co., and saw action at Shiloh even though his Company was at Corinth on April 6&7, 1862. He earned the "Southern Cross" which is engraved on his government headstone where he was burried at Ledbetter Cemetary, Hardin County, TN in 1871. I'd like to know more about him and his wife, Mary Lucrecia Wicker whom he married on her 14th BD ( 12/25/1868 ). Her father, Roderick Gaines Wicker, also a member of the same artillery Co., was killed at Shiloh, and never found. Lucrecia's mother, maiden name Hooker, was related to the Yankee Major General, Joseph Hooker. I have more story, and some pictures, and would love to piece together more of the story of these people. Your work and dedication to this cause is greatly appreciated, sir. John Kenneth Strawn |

It's hard to believe what happen there, but then again look at Germany in the 1940's,pictures tell it all. It was hard for me to fathom that this happen in our own country. I believe we need to learn from our past, not cover it up or change history, so something like this NEVER happens again. |
