That morning (1/27/67) I was totally oblivious to the weather, dressed for school as normal, had my coat on ready to go out the door for the mile walk to school, when my mom stopped me with those three unexpected words, 'School's closed today' which she had just heard on the radio. I was so disappointed! Fast forward to 1987 and meeting you & Andrew at the Galesburg mall. One of my favorite memories. Andrew was SO CUTE, and you a very loving mom. You have such a gift of writing about the boys - plus a variety of pictures -- so many memories through these last 8 years. We are so happy that you met with a great group of Andrew and Jarrett's friends the other night - it's such a tribute, not only to the boys but to you and Bob that you have reached out to their friends each year on the anniversary of the accident and made them a part of your memories of Andrew and Jarrett. | Comments: | I walked briskly through the wake... I never wrote, I never came to the house, I never visited the grave - hell, I didn't even apply for the guaranteed scholarship... But I still think often about the small things... Jarrett forcing me to eat a taco bell chicken quesadilla (and then me loving it), endlessly one-upping each other on in-line skates while practicing at both of our houses, tapping on the basement aquarium glass to piss off Andrew, fighting over the same girls (once those interests started creeping into our young male minds), debating about Jarrett's weird sleep-to-classical-music thing as compared to my strange love of Asian pop music, coming over to each other's houses just to play online computer games sitting next to each other and then going home and continuing to play the same games with each other over the net haha... being so passionate about the same types of hobbies yet going about them in different ways, we challenged each other so much... we always made the other better because he had to-- or he'd lose - we told so many secrets to each other, admitted that we felt we were equals lording over the top of Kaneland, haha, it was almost like asking a girl to marry us when we had the funny/awkward "well, yeah... I guess you're my best friend" talk, ahaha... Ahh, I dunno... this is what I decided to do at 1A.M. on a night where I'll have to wake up in 5 hours to go to work at my job at the largest law firm in Osaka, Japan, ahahaha... if this is what I'm doing Jarrett would definitely be doing something equally insane |

| Comments: | Happy Birthday Andrew!! If you were still on earth, you'd be 24 years old. Wow! Things have really changed a lot here on the planet since you've been gone. People don't send emails any more they communicate mainly on something called Facebook where they can talk to everyone at once and send pictures and also everyone sends written messages on their phones which also take pictures. EVERYONE has a cell phone!! You thought the new phone you got just before you died was cool (and it was for 2003), the ones they have now can do everything. They're awesome. You'd love all the new, cool stuff. I'm still technologically challenged for the most part but for some reason I keep writing in Jarrett and your website. Mainly so I can remember what you did while you were here with me and look at the pictures of your faces so I don't forget you. It gets harder all the time -- it doesn't get easier. I manage to hide it better since no one wants to hear my sad and pitiful tale of woe. Every once in a while, I have to watch a videotape (those are passe, too) or a DVD to see you and hear your voice -- I miss your voice. When I watch those tapes, I see how happy we were - laughing, having fun, being silly. Since you've been gone, my life has pretty much ended, too. I have nothing to live for and nothing to do. Nothing to hope for. Nothing to dream about. It really sucks. You and Jarrett were my world. You were my special guys, and I loved you both more than anyone else in the world. You're probably in heaven or some place equally sweet like that (without gravity) but I don't know EXACTLY where you are and I always did so this not knowing is very disturbing to my entire being. I try not to think about it because when I do, it makes me cry. And I remember your words, "Don't cry, Mom." Wish you were here, sweetie. Also wish you didn't have to leave me so quickly. If you were still here, we could have gone to Ju-Rin tonight and I would've bought you a Japanese beer. I will always love you forever and ever and even after that - to infinity and beyond. Thank you for allowing us to re-visit, through these many pictures, the beautiful tribute their classmates put together to honor your sons. I remember how awestruck we were when we entered the high school and saw so many loving messages, banners, balloons, flowers, etc. Andrew and Jarrett were so loved and admired!! One of the images that still breaks my heart is the Kaneland Knight bent in sorrow in front of their crosses. Tears still come easily for me when I think of how your life was forever changed on that tragic day. | Comments: | While searching for something else completely, I stumbled upon the journal & photo of "Grandma & Grandpa" O'Malley. We thought of them that way, too, although they were not related to us at all! We lived next door to them in Harvard, Illinois for many years, and visited with them frequently after we moved to another neighborhood in town. I remember hearing all about those from Rochelle, the Bergs, the Walshes, etc. I think it was Mrs. O'Malley's son who would drive up from Rochelle with his wife in a 50's sky blue car. Sister Herman Joseph (their dtr) would visit summers. She was with the same order of nuns as our teachers at St. Joseph's in Harvard. Opal Powers, Richie P.(my age), Larry Berg (neighbor & friend- was a pall bearer for my mom when she was buried at the St.Joe's Cemetery. Stella O'Malley- yes, she was the sweetest, kindest person one could ever have for a next-door neighbor. She'd ask my older brothers & I to pick the cherries off her tree "before the birds get them all"- O, I can't hear her voice saying that right now! She'd reward us with a tart cherry pie. Of the nine of us next door, we still rate hers as the standard against which all others are measured- they all fall far below that standard- (Even mom's!) I remember Mrs. O'Malley saying, "God love ya'" while shaking her head and smiling. I remember Mr. O'Malley coming home each day from the Starline foundry next to us. He'd have that Irish flatcap on and walk slowly past our house with his hands clasped behind his back and give us a grandfatherly smile & greeting. He didn't talk much on any occasion we'd be in their little house (still standing!!-December 2007), and Mrs. O'Malley would have to remind us that he couldn't hear very well. ("He's deaf as a post", she'd say). She told us that he once made a cat out of molten steel(I believe) at the foundry. We never actually saw it, but I always was curious about it. They were in a very bad automobile accident, I recall, but despite their age they made it ok and John kept on driving. My last visit with Mrs. O'Malley was when she was in the nursing home (in Woodstock? don't recall). She was still just as sweet as ever, but had failing memory by that time. They've both joined the Communion of saints as have both my parents. I've retired from teaching in So.California. My siblings have all left Illinois, but we still talk about the O'Malleys to this day when we discuss old times back in Harvard. |

I was looking on the internet for favorite tunes to download to my myspace playlist. So, this was just an accident. But because I don't believe in accidents, I am writing this note. Thank you for posting this site. It's a beautiful site filled with love and strength to honor the memory of two beautiful young souls! Losing those boys must be the most difficult thing you've ever endured. My heart goes out to you! I can't imagine, other than being the single parent of a 26 year old daughter. She's been through some rough patches health wise, but keeps on moving forward. I was pretty melancholy today, altho finally relaxed because we finally got good news from her doctor today for a healthy outcome. She's one tough firecracker! So, I was thinking about her and my dear father who passed in 2004. Knowing that he's working diligently on his family's behalf, but still missing him very much today. So, it was very comforting for me to find this site today. A year after he passed, I found it hitting me really hard. Dad came to me in a dream and spoke the most comforting words of gold for me to hold in my heart forever. I think these words can help you too - "Believe that I am helping to arrange many wonderful things for you from this side. Who better to help you than one who is closest to you, knows you the best, and desires the best for you." Since then I have taken notice of the many turnarounds, serendipitious occurrences and things going in my favor that most definitely has Dad's hand in it! I'm sure you can too, with your boys. And I'm sure their helping hands reach further to the many friends. I know my father thoroughly enjoys the loving tasks on my behalf. I bet your boys do too!
