| Comments: | It is great that you have found this info. As for me, I can't trace my Peevy family name. My ggrandfather & his brother were adopted at a young age. I was told Peevy was their birth name, but I can't find any records on him. All anyone can tell me is his name Newton Peevy b.1871 Arkansas. I'm not sure if this info is correct. I did find him on a 1910 census in Quinton oklahoma. |

| Comments: | I thank you for the opportunity to learn something of your PEVEYs. I usually use a recorded spelling for each ancestor of my own surname: Joseph PEAVEY/Guilford PEAVY/Henry H. PEVY/David A. PEVEY/Eulie Hudson PEVEY-PEAVY(my grandfather). As you indicate, several other variations were used by our ancestors and the scribes in Screven, Effingham and Chatham Cos GA. The early north GA PEAVEY/PEEVYs (another Joseph or two, an Abraham, some Dial/Dyals) to whom we are evidently related most likely came through NC/Delaware/New England. In these still earlier and not well established generations, the surname also appeared as PAVEY. At one time, the PEAVY spelling was the scribe's choice in Screven and Chatham Cos GA, while PEVEY was generally preferrred in Effingham Co GA. Joseph was related to Michael (father of Littleton) and an earlier Isaac PEAVEY. Joseph's at least three children were Guilford, Isaac(II) and Luke Mizell. Prior to 1837, Luke Mizell PEAVY settled in Randolph Co GA, and he has many descendants in that area today. I supplied information to your branch through a dozen e-mails in April of 1998, but these messages must not have been received -- I have had nothing in return until now, and I thank you very, very much for it. I'll try to resend the dozen e-mails. Incidentally, my grandfather's spelling probably changed from PEVEY to PEAVY (not when he moved from the Wallowing Branch area of Efffingham Co GA, just south of Oliver in Screven Co GA, to Chatham Co GA, but) when he registered for Social Security -- likely another stroke by yet another scribe.
