| Comments: | Seeking info on John Hickman, b abt 1802 Washington County VA, spouse Sarah Green? Pitts, b VA. Lincoln Co Tax List Roll 008116 shows John paid taxes 1838-1844. There is no record of taxes paid in 1845 or 1846. Eldest son James paid taxes (on same property?) 1847-1849. James and most of family, including William, the youngest son of John and Sarah, born 15 Oct 1845, also the family historian, moved to Indiana so they could live on Free Soil. According to William, his parents owned slaves, but I haven't found any proof. Years later, William, wrote that he was orphaned when he was 3 yrs old. (This sounds strange. It seems unlikely that both young parents would both die of natural causes, and if they died of typhoid or cholera, at least one child should have died also.) Than you for any help. | Comments: | I am a member of a group of ancestors researching one George McKinney b1791 in Lincoln County. We are aware of a George McKinney born same date who was married to Pantha Houston and was reportedly drowned in the Ky. River in 1817. There was a son, George Houston McKinney born to that marriage in 1818. There are several questions surrounding this death which may indicate that rather than drowning, George took the opportunity to execute a frontier divorce. George McKinney served in the War of 1812 and appears on later census in Alabama. We have his military records. There is no record or him before that. He had a son using the same name as the Ky. son. |
