| Comments: | In 1970 my friend and I decided to travel Europe and so.. we did.One of our most remembered and treasured visits was not only to Cape Clear but one paticular family.
One day,we were leisurly strolling along the sea wall in County Cork when we noticed a fisherman below the street level gettng ready for a day of fishing. We hollered down, asking if we could join he and his buddy. He replied stating he was passing Cape Clear and would drop us there.Since we were free and easy we said why not. Arriving on the shore of Cape Clear I remember a well of 'holy water' or some kind of shrine.Unfortunately ,my memory fails me.We met a young teenage boy from England who was staying with his g'parents for the summer on Cape Clear.Apparently,he was getting in trouble with the 'skin heads' at home in England and his mother felt a summer with his g'parents would help..He took us to meet his g'parens,Maggie and Pattie who lived in a typical very old Irish house. We were invited to stay the night and share what little they had.To get to our room you had to leave the kitchen part of the house ,go outside and enter the bedroom.Maggie lit the fireplace and alerted us to the peepot before retiring for the night. We really felt we were experiencing something out of a story book. They had only bread and jam which we had for both supper and breakfast. It was delicious. As my friend and I talked that night about our adventure we wondered what we had in our backpacks that could possibly pass for a gift of thanks for the wonderful hospitality.I swear, for both of us,we would take this accomadation over the Ritz anyday. The g'son[forget his name]took us on a tour of the island.I do remember seeing and playing around an old castle hanging off a cliff with the ocean directly below. The g'son said it was once a pirates hide-away. My friend and I have since married, had families and are now both widows. Our conversations of 3yrs of travel in Europe never comes up when we do not mention Maggy and Pattie and their tremendous giving nature.Their gentle spirit has guided me in decisions I had to make during child rearing. Does this location or family sound familiar to anyone?Of all our travels this is one place we would like to revisit soon. I too was brought up on an island.Cape Breton Island is a ile full of celtic culture. Both my parents spoke gaelic and I have taken lessons myself.Cape Breton is connected to the mainland of Nova Scotia by a causeway.Have any of you been there? Take care and thank you Cape Clear for wonderful memories. |

My first time in Ireland was last year and it was mega magic... I will be back in Cobh this July (truly counting the days) As I was reading the other posts in the guestbook I realised that many people are from Cobh. Every day I log onto two sites that maybe of use to others. The first is Cobh Net.Com its a great site with photos and you can join in conversation with others who once lived in Cobh. And for those who want true Irish music log onto Midwest Irish Radio . Kind regards Katy (Tyneside) |

| Comments: | I found this webpage by accident and I think its great. I lived in Cobh with my Grandmother Nellie Forrest in 1956-57.She had a boarding-house on Harbour Row and I remember when the liners were in she often had American tourists staying. I went to the convent school and remember some of the friends I made. One was Sheila Pritchard who used to come to school on the ferry, which I thought really romantic!! I also remember Jane Darcy who lived "up the hill" and I used to call for her to walk to school. I remember that her father had a workshop on the opposite side to where they lived and one day it burned down. With the priorities of a child all I was worried about was that I knew Jane's bike was in there!! My Mother was called Georgina McNally before she married my father Terry Flood. They married in the Cathedral in 1949.I have always felt that Cobh is "home" even though I was born in Liverpool, and have many happy memories of our summer holidays there. |

My Irish husband & I had 3 children, the eldest son born in Dublin, our daughter and youngest son in St. Finbar's Cork, while we were living in East Ferry. I visited last summer to find a tree growing through the roof of our little home! But Cobh will always hold a special place in my heart and although I only spent 4 days there last summer, I met many of my dear friends, whom I think of often. The most friendly, and the kindest people on earth live in Cobh-I miss you all! |

| Comments: | My husband and I went to Cobh, in November of 2002, while we were on vacation. Unfortunately, we hadn't left enough time to tour as much of Cobh as we liked. However, Ireland is so enchanting to us that we are on our way back next month and have left two nights of our 6 day trip to Cobh. We absolutely can not wait to get there. We hope to attend services at St. Colemans Cathedral while we are there. We were able to see the Herritage center last time as well as the Titanic Restruant. Which was my absolute favorite meal while I was in Irleand and probably my most memorable and favorite tourist stop. Cobh was really my most favorite stop while in Ireland and can't wait to get back. If you could would you please make any reccomendations for our up coming stay as well as send me the mass times and days for the Cathedral.
Sincerely, Kristen Schrader Memphis, TN |
