I dind´t know who was this singer with incredible voice. The first time a saw you was in the grammys in 1997. I realized that it was you, performing Building a Mystery and Adia. Then I bought the surfacing cd, and I just fell in love with all the songs. They helped me a lot, specially in the sad moments. They were a great company in my bad times. It almost seems a cruel joke that the one person on the planet who I (along with countless others) have turned to for solace in times of pain and need should be forced to face such deep pain herself.  In November of 1998 my own mother fell ill. After suffering an aneurysm to the brain at the age of 63, she ended up falling into a coma. My family patiently waited for four weeks at her bedside; waiting for her to open her eyes. Stationed at Sunny Brook Medical, she was placed in what’s called the 78 Hour room of the NICU (Neural Intensive Care Unit). It is in this room all head and brain injury victims spend their first 78 hours. Those are the most critical in this type of patient. My mother was there for 3 and a half weeks.

When she finally opened her eyes, the woman that was once my mother had mostly disappeared. Three years later she still exists in a semi-coma state, void of memory and cognitive ability. She does not even understand simple functions such as eating and going to the washroom, and half her body is paralyzed. Two nurses, my father and a machine generally take care of those duties. There have been times when she shows a sign of life, by yelling a non descript word, or smiling, or even on occasions laughing. In the beginning, there were many signs like this, giving us some sense of hope that we may one day get her back. Unfortunately, as time has passed, she has suffered a series of seizures, each one of these doing a little bit of damage, just small parts off her brain shutting off one by one. The doctors have informed us that one day one of these seizures will occur, and it will probably turn off that little part of the brain that tells the heart to pump or the lungs to breathe.

It was the worst thing that could happen in a bad year. The events of my life at that time almost seem fictional. In the months before my mothers aneurysm, my first love left me, I had to fight to get into school, and my family had to declare bankruptcy. It seemed as if we had lost everything.

We spent our time grieving, it took its toll, on my family. It showed me who my friends really are. That period is over now, and we have realized that we should take this time before she leaves us completely to cherish her life, and not mourn it.

Why am I telling you this, well I survived that time because of a few things. Friends being the most important, for the rest of my life, I will never be able to thank them enough. Secondly, music saved me, people like Sarah Mclachlan, and Jewel. Like my friends there is no way I could ever show these people enough appreciation, I credit them with saving my life. Sarah’s ANGEL was getting a lot of air play around the time my mom went in the hospital, it played a big role in my emotional freedom, the times that I listened to it were the times I felt it was ok to cry. Now hearing that Sarah’s mom is sick, I am sad that there is not much I can do to help her, that I can’t provide her with the same solace. So I have to thank the webmaster for giving people like me the opportunity.

If Sarah is reading this, you are in my thoughts. Hopefully your Peter Gabriels and Joni Mitchels can help you as much as you did me.
