Comments: My comment is simple. Why there's such a mess with Shirley? Some of you come to the conclusion she actually had a mp disorder, some, maybe after comments of rather unsuccesful C. Wilbur's 'workmate' that she didn't have. There will always be comments it was a scam, or issues with envy (why Wilbur made money on Shirley, not someone else, of course). My question is: why people believe in god (which is absurd for me) and don't believe in disorders like that? Considering disorders you can at least make observations, or believe in analyst's observations. In case of g o d - what do you all have? Nothing. But you believe. Anyway, if you don't have disorder like that, you will never know how it is to live with it. Some of you are unable to put yourselves in somebody elses shoes, moreover, you are unable to have any deeper insight in your own lives.

Comments: Thank you for these pages - as a multiple we struggled for ten years or so to fit the socially required pattern of a disordered mess and strove, like a good little bunch of guides and scouts, for the merit badge of 'intergration' whatever the hell that is, paid out heaps of hard-earned dosh for therapy that was, on the whole, totally useless as well as being dangerously painful to some. Keep up the good work! x

Comments: Revelation 9-[13] And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, [14] Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. [15] And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. [16] And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them. this prophecy says that 1/3 of the earth's population will be killed in ww3!!! I am warning you all now that you must repent and have faith in the LORD JESUS CHRIST!! we do not know who will be killed. Spread the word!!

What do you like best: I like this site's view on everything. Seems to be slightly more positive than all the negative things I've been reading.

What do you want to see: Some kind of chatroom. It would be very interesting to me to talk with you all.

Comments: I was surfing the web trying to figure out an explanation for myself - I don't have DID, though I have certain qualities that seem like what I originally thought to be symptoms, as I feel constantly torn and people have in the past said to me that "I feel as though I am talking to a completely different person", a certain friend of mine can tell when I go through what I thought to be a switch between "my two" if they are two, however, I rarely experience a lapse of memory or if I do, it could be explained by exhaustion, so I was not sure and still am (clearly) unsure. Still I like the site and enjoyed reading and intend to continue surfing. [I suggest offering a Partly on the FAQ reading question because I have read most of it but have not yet made it all the way through!]

People who are multiple
Sunday, February 18th 2007 - 11:43:52 AM

How'd you find us: Web search

What do you like best: The FAQ. Made us feel like we could be ourselves without being judged. We only leave a comment now, but we read it a few month ago, when we were discovering that we were several people. It put words on many of our feelings and experiences in life, and now we don't try anymore to hide each other in any way. It's good to see some open minded people who aren't trying to say what we are living instead of us.

Comments: Thanks for having made this website. There are lots of interesting articles and an open minded view on multiplicity, we're very glad we've found it. We don't have anything special to say here, just that we agree with you. Speaking for us, we are healthy (well, at least we look healthy), without the need of a therapist. Some of the people who know us can sometimes see when we are switching (not even knowing that we are multiple), but they'd never say that we are dysfunctionnal. In our case, it is a good thing to be several in one body (most of the time... Except when there are arguings or triggers ::blush::), we can use each other's talents and point of views to improve our outside life. Good to be free to exist! We wish we could tell offline, but it will never happen (only to a selected few persons). At least, by telling to people online, you can explain them what multiplicity is for real. But there are still so much people who are hateful to multiples, both online and offline. Like the FMSF, but not only them. We know for sure that repressed memories exist, we have had evidences of it through our life. We are also a bit scared of people who try to say that we are some kind of psychics. All of them are trying to transform us in what they imagine. It's enough to have to play a role in our everyday life, we don't want them to "control" our inside life. Sorry for talking so much about us. Good luck with your website, it's very helpful. ^_^

What do you like best: Have just realised I'm not alone with MPD(no pun intended)!! It's good to know other people have it and know what it's like to have amnesia etc. I've got huge gaps in my memory (mainly childhood). Just for the record I'm now 47. Thankfully my memories' been intact from my early 20s'. Can only remember odd bits n pieces from before that. I think that's what bugs me the most. Bit like missing jigsaw pieces you can't get hold of.

What do you want to see: Would anyone happen to know of any self-help chat rooms I could maybe sign-up to and "meet" other MPD/DID survivors?

Comments: Greetings from Edinburgh, bonnie Scotland!! Any fellow Brits out there? All the sites I've checked (2)!? are mainly frequented by usa or canadian people. I'm pretty sure that MPD//DID is a bit more widespread than that (you can't keep it all to yourselves. Time to share!).

Astrea's is a GREAT site - it's the outside sites that I don't like. I have reccommended THIS site to people many times, and coming from me that says a lot. I almost never reccommend sites about multiples to people... it's their "multiplicity is a disorder" myth and their promotion of the diagnosis DID that keeps me from doing it. YAY for Astrea!

Comments: My husband of 20 yrs is a MC survivor. New to us (lol we thought he was just nuts) but feeling a little stoopid now because we knew in a way & didn't put it all together. What do you like best: I was glad to see someone posting more of the little-known FACTS about Wendy Gardner. She was not a mastermind killer and James Evans was certainly no pawn! It's a good thing to give people some insight as to how Wendy was raised and how she was truly too young to really know what love or death was at her own age and mental state then. Her voice was never heard and I was glad to see an article defending her for once.

What do you want to see: More insight about why we DON'T need president Bush (for those who still think he's doing a good job.)

Comments: I personally know Wendy Gardner - we fell in love and have been a couple since 2004. She will never forget her crime and every day she deals with that. I try to help her through it, as she truly is a very loving person who came from a lot of abuse. James Evans and Saugerties is a thing of the past and that horrible book written by DeFelice is designed to sell copies with photos and exaggerated, fluffy fantasy about Wendy and James. She is not a manipulative killer, nor is she responsible for James Evans' decision to commit a murder. For once, Wendy finally has real love - not obsession, and she is doing very well.

If you really believe this stuff you need serious help. I suggest looking in to the research of Dr. Albert Ellis. You can think yourself into being quite nuts and I believe you people have. I don't believe in the popular therapy of supporting notions such as these that you people seem to promote and a therapist trained in congnitive behvorial therapy would be of great help to you all. www.rebt.org

What do you like best: You don't make multiplicity a sickness or something that has to be cured or corrected.... at least not on the site itself.

What do you want to see: I would like to see you not provide misleading information indirectly through links you've posted with the intent of supporting your own statements. Every one of the sites to which you link to support yourself contains misleading information. I've gone through this site extensively on numerous occasions over time, and have looked at every link you've given, including those pages' own links. By linking to those sites, anyone who thoroughly goes through here will end up with the same misinformation that you are trying to get them to realize isn't correct.

Comments: Your site doesn't contain any information about the physical nature of multiplicity. The information supports 1. the fact that integration can't happen in a "real" multiple; 2. the the fact that multiplicity doesn't all result from abuse; and 3. the fact that people who become multiple from abuse, were already physiologically "inclined" towards multiplicity (doesn't mean they would be multiple without the abuse)

What do you want to see: I don't know, there is so much to read.

Comments: Thank god I'm not the only one! I have two to four different aspects that take on their own personality and appearance in my head. The most prominent is Dalem and Ana, Dalem is outspoken, confident and aggressive, and Ana is eager, cheerful, outgoing and emotional. I don't consider myself a "we" but think of myself as a referee when considering a course of action and hearing from all sides before making a decision. I am me, but there are others in me that like to get their say in too. I thought that in order to progress in life I would have to integrate these different aspects into one. I could not think of a way to get two personas as different as Ana and Dalem to integrate though. I thought I was the only one that had this sort of thing going through my mind too. Though I have had trauma in the past I have found being multiple actually gives me an advantage in adapting to different situations. I was in a world of my own until recently and I did not learn much about socialization and interacting in reality until late last year. But since I am a multiple I found that having different aspects with different views makes it a lot easier to adjust and learn then if it was just me.

Comments: I do like that you are pretty thorough and give people other options. I do believe that there are other types of multiples. I also believe in Otherkins and I do believe and respect a lot of what you write.

But I do not believe multiple is a disorder unless it causes measurable distress where therapy really be the best option.

I guess I wish there were some way you could express the difference between someone with multiple personalities and someone with DID. I really think there is a huge difference, and maybe that is why they changed the name from MPD to DID... If you have a disorder it would be DID, other wise you are just multiple, or if you wish, have multiple personalities.

I would never argue that I was any more multiple than you are. I just have a disorder that causes major distress and problems. I am the product of abuse and other painful stuff... I created others within because I could not cope with it... still can't. I am highly functioning, believe my ability to dissociate is a gift, and all of that. I guess I am sort of angry and feel that this is not a disorder. You may be multiple and you may need support, but you do not need therapy, hospitalization, and support from others who Suffer from the disorder.

I really wish you could see that by mocking the DMSV or whatever it is called, you are saying that being a multiple is being a multiple. What you live - because there was no abuse - and what we live is not the same thing. People with DID, the disorder would like to be out of the closet, but we are taken advantage of. We have a lot of issues with trust, fear, horrible coping skills...

Most of us do not want people to call us by different names, know that we have amnesia, and much more. It is very painful when we look for support and find people pretending to have the disorder rather than looking for support in accepting they are multiple.

Again, where on earth did you get the idea that we claim we were never abused? Please read How do we know this is our truth before you judge us. We are not, repeat, NOT trying to put difference between multiples who were abused and those who were not.

As a matter of fact, two of the most disordered groups we ever knew were non-trauma, non-split multiples, neither of whom had ever been diagnosed or had therapy.

The concept of dissociative disorders as currently understood by modern psychiatry simply doesn't serve all multiples, including all of those who really are in trouble and want or need services. We feel just as strongly about the ability of multiples who want such services to get them, as we do about the fact that multiplicity itself should not always be treated as a mental disease. It is YOUR experience that matters, and the fact is most mental health professionals today overlook the client's experience.

What do you like best: Sarcastic replies to nob-headed comments re: this site making cash ;)

What do you want to see: A better answer to Casey's question! (Though using an online encylopedia might be a good start!) And the FAQ working. I'm a psychology student interested in DID, multiplicity, etc. I do not, as a psychologist, rule out multiplicity (I never completley rule out anything!) but I was unsatisfied with your response to Casey's question on the differences between DID and MPD, and the world of Psychologys views on DID. I'm going to give the views from the best of my knowledge and please bear in mind I do not think of multiplicity as "junk."

Comments: For Casey: DID and MPD are the same thing. Multiple Personality Disorder was the original name for this classification but is now listed in the Diagnostical and Statistical Manual IV, (which is a manual with criteria of psychological conditions intended to be used as as Dissociative Identity Disorder - there is no difference. Also I find your use of "they" regarding psychologists as unhelpful, seeing as within psychology there are a number of schools of thought which would explain inconsistencies in explanations of DID. Also, DID is considered to be extremley rare. For example, there may be millions of people diagnosed with schizophrenia in the world, but only hundreds with DID. The diagnosis is made extremley carefully, according the best available research and information we have. The sexual abuse theory came about because an extremley high number of people in America diagnosed with DID reported sexual abuse as a child (the figure was something like 96%, I can't find the study in my notes at the present time, but it was certainly over 95%) The therapist suggestion theory was because several therapists at one time dianosed a very high number of patients with DID, whereas other therapists may never occour a "multiple", suggesting susceptibilty as a *possible* cause. People in general are fairly susceptible to suggestion, and these people were in therapy for some reason, so this may be more applicable to them. However, people were being diagnosed elsewhere by people who did not diagnose a large number of patients with DID. Psychologists do not know what causes multiple personalities, although many follow the idea it is a learnt response to abuse or trauma. We do still not agree on how to treat it, whether to treat it, or whether we should treat it at all. I would also like to note that there is no such thing as "not being bothered." People in my field explore mental conditions/activity/disorders out of both strong academic interest and human sympathy. (Well, this was good revision! Please, no-one email me about being a pig-headed, facist, controlling psychologist or similar, I'm just offering perspective, innit.)

Everything in this e-mail and web-page can be easily verified so don’t just take our word for it. Take the time to verify it for yourself. Our Country’s future is at stake. Our country has been hijacked and our nation is in serious trouble. Now there is tangible evidence and yet our government is still lying to us to protect the Bush administration from prosecution for treason. Our government did everything they could to try to stop us from hearing what really took place and how our people died in New York at the World Trade Center. It took a court order and three years of litigation to obtain these audiotapes that our government does not want you to hear. In this web-page are five clips from a surveillance camera that was outside the Pentagon during the 9/11 attacks, and former immigration officer for Homeland Security, Mary Schneider, implicates the Bush administration. Eyewitnesses at the scene speak out about the World Trade Center collapse, and the voices of the rescue workers from audio tape 776923 where a rescue worker yelled out "EXPLOSION!" as his radio went dead and the 26th floor exploded and one of the World Trade Center buildings collapsed. What do you like best: The best info I have been able to find honestly. There seems to be a hell of a lot of conflicting theories about the subject but so far you've presented the clearest information and it is basically makes sense given what little I know. I am unsure what to think about the idea of multiple souls or personality transfer. I always assumed a single soul divided into multiple personalities. One being just many persons, all part of each other in the same way past lives are, but all alive at once sharing a body.

What do you want to see: Honestly, the opposition. There are so many conflicting theories and it seems your view isn't the same as the majority opinion of psychiatry. So what is? The theory it is created by therapists? That it comes from sexual abuse? How exactly is DID differently defined from MPD (if at all)? Since every site is either incomplete, touting it's particular view or both it's very hard to know what the "mainstream" view is. If adopt your general outlook on the subject what kind of flak should I expect from people?

The mainstream view has been fairly inconsistent. First they said it was caused by child abuse; then they said it was caused by therapist suggestion. If the "opposition" view isn't clear from our pages, perhaps it's because the opposition has never bothered to provide a consistent explanation of a controversial condition.

What do you want to see: The mail form isn't working again so I'm posting this here with my email address.

Comments: I had a few questions... first of all is it possible to get a person, self, character, or whatever you want to call it, from another multiple system, so to speak? From another incarnate human person with a bunch of her own Others?

Also, if your relationship with your others inside starts to break down, what can you do about it? Or is this only a result of everything else on the outside breaking down... and what if your environment no longer seems to support your interaction with the others? Is it true that all manner of things inner must manifest and produce some sort of incarnate results, even if just in the sense of an outer attitude change or new insight that causes you to react differently in the outside world?

Can the others inside have delusions about who THEY are.. that is, think they are people (for example maybe a historical figure) when they really aren't, even if all their memories personalities and talents add up to that conclusion...

I think I may have learned multiplicity from others who had it; I picked it up when making friends who were multiples and I remember being envious that they had such clearcut and interesting people that they could access anytime. I developed the capacity myself and have had it for several years but after a big life transition and being in a different situation, I'm terrified of losing them, things feel confused and like they are fading away (my entire life sort of feels like that, but specifically I'm concerned about losing them). Should I let them go (or be integrated?) or should I work to keeping an effective inner community going with them all as their own people?

Thank you, hope to hear back from you soon...

What do you want to see: No "requests" persay, but a suggestion: The navigation seems to be somewhat inconsistant from section to section (namely, some links aren't present in the navigation bar in some places of the site). This is probably nitpicking however. Overall the site is superb.

Comments: It is quite a relief to have found your website and others like it, though admittedly yours has been the most helpful. I am one member of a system; we have only just recently discovered that we are, in fact, seperate entities. Unfortunately this discovery caused us great distress for a while, since the only paradigm for multiplicity we had seen previously was that of insanity, requiring therapy and integration as the only suitable course of action. We did, however, come across pages like this one, and they have been invaluable to our well-being. So, thank you very much for taking the time to accumulate such an impressive collaboration of work and research. It has been therapeutic to say the least, but is also exceedingly interesting as well. :) We will definitely return from time to time (we still haven't read everything yet, after all).

What do you like best: I liked the fact that I've actually found more people that are like myself.

What do you want to see: I'm still looking through the site. ^-^ So far, nothing comes to mind.

Comments: Glad to meet you all. I personally have five others sharing with me, each with their own name and personal history they've either made up for their benefit, or the true history of them. Each of us take turns being 'in charge' and will also allow each to use their own individual talents based on the circumstances of a particular situation. I'm happy that there is actually people out there willing to teach others about this natural side to us, and even people coming here with a willingness to learn. Keep up the good work. ^-^

What do you like best: I liked Tony's articles best. Very well thought-out. I'm delighted to have found you, and your points of view. It's given me a lot of food for thought in my own life and the life that I share with my more-than-friends.

What do you want to see: More!

Comments: I linked to you from wikipedia. Did you know you're on their page about DID?

Astraea^Jay Sez: Indeed we did. I contributed a great deal to that article about a year ago, and I am the one who added the link to our website. Blatant self-promotion R us. It's not Tony by the way -- it's Andy. He says "thank you for your kind words" -- he has a new article up as of 12/7 & says he'll have more articles soon.

What do you like best: The information is rather impressive, that it is... I had hoped (and, for deep personal reasons, feared) that there was an entire multi-minded (my friends' term) subculture out in the world, and this site is my first and greatest exposure to it (being a singlet). The exposure to a few new and different ideas was enlightening.

What do you want to see: Maybe I'm a self-centered idiot for suggesting this, but it might be interesting to see some writings and such from the viewpoints of singlets friendly to multiples, the stories of friends, families, and significant others who experience multiplicity from the outside, the obvious difficulties or interesting adventures that such a position entails.

Comments: My boyfriend is a multiple, and we're very close and open about the nature of himself and his two friends (who, in turn, are luckily my two friends). Ironically, he first told me the truth about it almost exactly a year ago. There are a few terms and ideas that I've seen here that we never used or thought of (singlet, multiple, in front, co-conscious, system, et cetera). He was multi-minded, the person controlling the body was “driving,” the others who could see and hear were “passengers,” and we never really gave the three of them a collective name like system or household. They were just three people who happened to co-exist within the same brain and body (and, as one pointed out, get along better “in there” than most people do “out here”). I could prattle on and on about them, but I think I'll do the better thing and tell them about this site ASAP. Their “system” is interesting, following a few rules that seem different from what I've read here thus far. They'll definitely be interested, that they will. — Kairez Lightkeeper

Astraea sez: Your friend& are always welcome as are you. They're the second group we've heard of to use "driving" and "passenger" (the other group using those words is also a family of three). That should go in the glossary.

If we could get any singlets (incl some of our friends) to write for us, we would have such articles. More via email. Thank you!

Comments: Note for John: You were right. I was reading Kat's haiku. Still I really like it, even if I don't understand it as well as Kat does. Astraea sez: Oh, okay. That is CAT haiku. It's supposed to be what cats think about human beings. It's just there for humor. It is not meant to be serious or profound. (which is why it's linked from the silly page!) ^Imoreh just crossposted it (it's on a billion sites!) because he likes that kind of quirky sense of humor. He'll be glad to hear you enjoy it!

What do you like best: Have only seen the Glossary and the lovely poem page. The Glossary helped ease some anxiety.

What do you want to see: Don't know yet...Maybe, because the one we always thought was the only one we were studied Gurdjieff for a long time, and found solace and help in the idea of 'many I's', links to others who may have done the same?

Comments: What a lot of effort and love has gone into this site. Thank you for sharing it with us all. Astraea sez: You're very welcome. Did you see the Religion page? You are the 2nd person to mention poetry. Where are you reading it? We don't carry any poetry on our website! This must be an outside link. Well, the important thing is you found something you liked through our pages. Keep reading!

John sez: Thank you very much!! but I didn't write any! Where are you seeing that? Grignr's not my name, it's a joke from a really bad story from long ago (we didn't write it)! Are you talking about Imoreh's "Cat Haiku"? He didn't write that, either! But thank you for the nice compliments & Keep Reading!

What do you like best: silly page--it's just so fun

What do you want to see: don't know right now

Comments: just want to say that all of us here in the multiple system have made up this person's one identity. WE see no real core personality. WE also want to add that we are naturally multiple and have been so since our early years of existence. Therefore, it just proves that multiplicity doesn't always come about from some sort of trauma.
