I've been looking for Hydra for years and just found them on myspace. Loved their music. I hung around the strip in Atlanta from '69 until the 64 police officers walked in pairs on peachtree to "clean up the area". I was going to Piedmont Park, the Georgian Terrace, Richards and other places to listen to Hydra , the Sweet Youngin's, the Allman Brothers, Hampton Grease. That was a great time. One song that has stuck in my mind all these years was Hydra's version of "Here Comes The Sun". It's funny what you remember. One band I remember was named "Booger Band". They did "feel a pain" and I always wondered what happened to them. If anyone knows, let me know. I hope Hydra keeps on going. They were one of the best. Okay, Hampton. I still have the album and listen to "Jim Evans" from time to time. Thanks, Mike

In the fall of 1989, I had the pleasure of getting a job in Atlanta, in a country bar off Jimmy Carter Blvd. For under one year, I operated the small lighting equipment while the men performed as the house band, the Wayne Bruce Band". In between sets, I kept the music going by serving as DJ. At that time, many of you probably know, they played primarily to the country crowd with some southern rock mixed in for good measure. I had grown away from the country music that my parents introduced me to years earlier. These guys restored my interest with rousing up tempo dance tunes as well as great vocals on the ballads. The instrumental performances were equally impressive. I know they opened their own club for a while over in Alabama just after I stopped working at the club. I hope that was a successful venture. It is funny because it was only through google searches did I learn of their past and present as the band Hydra. Hopefully the are still performing regulary and I can locate them. For the record, in 1989 around October, is when I started working with them. I was the balding blonde dude who moved to Atlanta from Louisiana, who wore short shorts, and rented a room from the bearded pawn shop owner who doubled as the line dance / country dance intructor on Sunday and Monday nights. I replaced a true Cajun who coincidently moved back to Lousiana.

Hmmmm where to begin, hot'Lanta in the 60's. I remember Spencer in the Atlanta Vibrations with his Gretsch and Beatle boots....Battle of the Bands! I remember Sweet Younguns (sang with them), Osmosis, Kudzu, and of course HYDRA...Funochios, Richards, the Electric Eye, The Spot and all of the podunk clubs and amories we used to play. I remember playing with the Younguns at The Pier in Daytona on the same bill as HYDRA. Shortly after that Trip Burgess quit the Younguns to play bass with Hydra for a number of years. Orville did a long stint with The Younguns as well before moving over to HYDRA. I played with Tommy V. in Perpetual Motion and we used to down Big Cat Malt Liquor....those were the days...yes they were. Anyway, it's good to see that you guys are still alive and well. I have been in Texas and now Denver, leaving Atlanta in 1980. I'm still singing a bit these days in a Doobies Tribute act, URL above. Keep that Southern Rock alive brothers. Bobby J. Rogers

Hydra is one of the all time GREAT American bands. I'm thrilled that they have this site and are still rocking. I don't know everyone in Hydra but I can testify that this band has at least two of the nicest guys in show business in Spencer and Steve. How lucky I was in the early '80s to get to play onstage with Steve Pace every night for a rocking summertime Derek St.Holmes tour. I've never forgotten working with Steve and how fabulous a guy he was just to be around. A true Gent! as many of you probably know. (He even helped me to lauch my next band until I could get a fulltime drummer...that's the kind of guy he is). Best wishes to HYDRA! You are loved by many, Keep Rockin' - BD.

What a band! As a youngster, I got to meet the band several times in Pensacola (we even went swimming at Pensacola Beach). On our senior trip we went to a Hydra show (they opened for BOC and Kiss...Kiss didn't get to perform for some reason). Hung out backstage with Spencer...really cool memories. Whatever happened to co-manager Debbie? God Bless and welcome back!

Hydra is still one of the finest groups ever....anywhere. Spencer K's guitar is like a rich, satisfying, favorite meal and Wayne Bruce has soul equal to Otis Redding and Ray Charles. Steve Pace is a drummers drummer. I look forward to hearing Tommy with this group, I know he's a smoking bass man with the other Atlanta groups he's involved with, so this shouldn't be any different. I hope you schedule as many local Atlanta dates as possible before the next World Tour. (Wayne, Does anybody still call you Manbat?)

I first saw Hyrda in 1969 at Druid Hills High School. I was in the ninth grade. Steve Pace you are the reason I still play the drums today. I am not a Hydra fan I am a Hydra freak. You guys have been rockin my world since 1969. I am 53 now, you do the math. Thank you for so much great music. You have put more joy into my life than you will ever know. I am still hopeful that one day I can meet Steve and tell him what an inspiration he is to me as a drummer. Steve, if you read this and I hope that somehow you will know I own you old drum cases that say HYDRA on them. I would not trade them for the world. Steve is the John Bonham of the south. There is only one HYDRA. GOD bless you all.

Hello to all! I am not one comfortable with posting on our own guestbook, but after talking to our old friend Orville recently, and conversations i have had with the other HYDRA members since this site has been available, i just felt it was time. I would like to say that i am touched by all the nice comments that i have read, and how pleased i was that so many people remember the band, but also remember us so fondly. It is a very good feeling to know we brought some small happiness to all of you. You certainly gave it to us. It has also been fantastic to hear from so many old friends that we have lost contact with over the years. All of your comments and stories of your experience with the band have indeed been an inspiration. All the hard work we did for so many years, wasn't in vain after all!!! I would like to thank Charlotte, The Hawk, and Big Ed for making this site available, (a pretty damned good live album too) and on behalf of all the band members of HYDRA (Steve, Spencer, Orville, Tom Vickery and myself, Thanks, we love you, and God Bless You ALL!!!!

Wow! I was inspired to get into a rock band when the "Atlanta Vibrations" played at my high school "East Atlanta High" back in 1968....Spencer, Steve, Bob Gianoni on bass and Jay Street on Keyboards. After several garage bands I finally wound up in a pretty good group called "Stillbrooke", and around 1970 we signed with "Discovery Inc." who also was booking "Hydra". We had heard that Hydra was about to put out their first album under the Capricorn label, and I was lucky enough to play in a band that opened for Hydra at a concert in "Freedom Park N.C." around 1971. Man It's great to see you guys back together again, your new bass man really seems to be in Motion.

I was a "groupie" I guess. Remember practicing in Nancy's living room, spencer? You look great, btw. You have never been too far from my thoughts. I guess I have compared every guitar player I ever heard to you. Hydra played our school dances at Hapeville High School. They made the yearbook! I knew Spencer back during Atlanta Vibrations days. I can't wait to order the CD's pack and hear that rockin' again and treat my husband to it also. Living in Illinois now but I would love to be on an email list if you have one. I'll never forget the first time I heard Spencer Kirkpatrick play guitar. He was doing a show with Strange Brew at the Catacombs, and the group I was playing guitar with at the time, the Hampton Grease Band, was also on the bill. I leaned over to the Grease Band's other guitarist Harold Kelling and exclaimed, "This guy's great!" Harold, having been around longer than myself, was already familiar with what a terrific guitarist he was from back when Spencer played with the Atlanta Vibrations (who, by the way, opened for the Beatles when they played the Atlanta stadium). After the show, I met Spencer and soon discovered that he had a personality that was every bit as captivating as his music. We got to know each other and traded guitars over the years, and in fact, I got the original Gibson Flying V that I played in the Grease Band from him. When Hydra formed, it was obvious they were destined for greatness, and without a doubt, on an artistic level that greatness was more than achieved. On a commercial level though, they -- like so many other great bands from Atlanta back then -- were victims of the curse of not being from New York, California or London, where the music business was centered at the time. What Atlanta lacked though, in terms of music business activity, it more than made up for in terms of the music scene itself. The talent was stellar and unique, and the audiences were nurturing in a way that brought out the very best in the bands. Thankfully, Hydra has released this new CD, both for those of us who were lucky enough to be there the first time around, as well as for those who never had the good fortune to hear them, and wonder what all the fuss was about.

This is to Alice V From Don Rice. Well Alice, if you must know, I was Hydra's first manager way back in the stoned age of 1969. Actually, that is not strictly correct; the band that I managed was Osmosis, which was comprised of Spencer, Steve, Wayne and Jim Yomans on bass. I left in late 1970 to persue my engineering career. Shortly after that, Jim left and was replaced with Trip Burgess from The Sweet Younguns. When Trip Joined the band, they changed their name to Hydra and Frank Hughes became their manager. The last time I saw them play was in Feb. 1976 when they opened for Jo Jo Gunn, here in Houston. Orville was on bass by that time. The only one who I have seen since then is Steve; he was living in the same house as my ex-wife and her husband, who cut a few songs in 1982 with Steve and Spencer. I've kept up with the guys through the years, by way of my ex and my brother. Yes, I do refer to CD's as records at times, because it is just another way of documenting a live or studio performance; you know, a record of the performance. Peace, Love and Harmony Alice, Don

When I was 14-15, I was a roadie for a band that was with the same management group as Hydra and gosh they were our LedZeppelin! The stories about the Hi Watt Stacks, Steve Pace's drumming and Spencer's guitar playing and Wayne's vocal style and those that tried to sing like him soon realized they couldn't! Anyway I remember seeing them for the first time as Ed has so thoughtfully reminded had to be at either CW Shaws or Richards or Hot Lanta. Back then Pony Millers and Sloe Gin could cloud the memory some and hey, I wasnt drivin' anyway!!! Anyway they about took my head off I thought the band Secrets were loud ....nope not in the running Hydra took it up 2 or 3 notches!!! Thru Eddie Gray and my own musical ventures I met Wayne Bruce when he came into a club I was playing with his band and just mopped the floor with us and then later we got reaquainted at the Country Star when I actually got to fill in some, Steve I met while he was with the fine guitarist Tommy Strain another Atlanta legend, and then Spencer I met thru Atlanta Discount Music I think? Anyway, we kept bumping into each other with my son along at a coffee shop that sold guitar magazines and he and I would flip over the last issue of Vintage guitar!!! The guys are really so nice and very humble of their talent and accomplishments and it was an honor for me that they came and rehearsed at my club Canton City Limits and they were the last group to make music there. So as much as I can I will help roadie for them so that I can go back to being that 14 or 15 year old kid again and sit and listen to some real masters again and they still blow me away "After All These Years".

Thanks for the great albums and past shows. I grew up in Decatur and saw Hydra from the beginning through 1973 or so. Great Memories, always loved "Feel a Pain" and remember Booger Band playing it. A friend had a tape of Booger Band music, wish I could get my hands on a copy. Great to hear Hydra is playin again!

So you guys are still alive! ha ha - Yea me too. You know you never get to old to want to do it but to actually get the energy and discipline up to do it is another thing. I am certainly glad you guys are still kicking and getting along well enough to do a major project like this. My hat is off to you and yours – it takes the whole family to make music happen. I will definitely be interested in hearing anything you guys do. When you make it big how about throwing EQT a bone and let us be your warm up band on a show or two– it would be an honor.

At first, I felt that I shouldn't sign this book (since I am actively working with the band), but I have decided that I have something to say. There is someone who would be very excited by this reunion, and who cannot sign for himself. I am speaking of Moe Slotin, and I decided that I wanted it known that we remember and miss the man. We can't see or hear you Moe, but we definitely feel ya!!!
