I know you guys don't tour or travel much anymore, but sure would love to see you in the Gadsden, Al area again. I would still like for Wayne to sign my LP one day. Thanks. ja

Where the hell is the "Rock the World" CD? I play it on the radio (WMUH, Allentown, PA) and my vinyl copy is getting pretty ragged. Tune in tomorrow and you'll hear (go to the Muhlenberg college website and you'll be directed from there). Anything left of the master? I thought it was your best work.

I would just like to say that to this very day I have ringing in my ears from standing in front of Spencer Kirkpatrick's Vox amplifier in 1966 or 67 at a "dance" where the Atlanta Vibrations played at Gordon High School in Decatur Ga. I am serious. It was very special. I'd also like to know anything about a same era band in South DeKalb named "The Licorice Phonebooth" Any info would be appreciated. It was my first strobe light.

In the fall of 1989, I had the pleasure of getting a job in Atlanta, in a country bar off Jimmy Carter Blvd. For under one year, I operated the small lighting equipment while the men performed as the house band, the Wayne Bruce Band". In between sets, I kept the music going by serving as DJ. At that time, many of you probably know, they played primarily to the country crowd with some southern rock mixed in for good measure. I had grown away from the country music that my parents introduced me to years earlier. These guys restored my interest with rousing up tempo dance tunes as well as great vocals on the ballads. The instrumental performances were equally impressive. I know they opened their own club for a while over in Alabama just after I stopped working at the club. I hope that was a successful venture. It is funny because it was only through google searches did I learn of their past and present as the band Hydra. Hopefully the are still performing regulary and I can locate them. For the record, in 1989 around October, is when I started working with them. I was the balding blonde dude who moved to Atlanta from Louisiana, who wore short shorts, and rented a room from the bearded pawn shop owner who doubled as the line dance / country dance intructor on Sunday and Monday nights. I replaced a true Cajun who coincidently moved back to Lousiana.

Hmmmm where to begin, hot'Lanta in the 60's. I remember Spencer in the Atlanta Vibrations with his Gretsch and Beatle boots....Battle of the Bands! I remember Sweet Younguns (sang with them), Osmosis, Kudzu, and of course HYDRA...Funochios, Richards, the Electric Eye, The Spot and all of the podunk clubs and amories we used to play. I remember playing with the Younguns at The Pier in Daytona on the same bill as HYDRA. Shortly after that Trip Burgess quit the Younguns to play bass with Hydra for a number of years. Orville did a long stint with The Younguns as well before moving over to HYDRA. I played with Tommy V. in Perpetual Motion and we used to down Big Cat Malt Liquor....those were the days...yes they were. Anyway, it's good to see that you guys are still alive and well. I have been in Texas and now Denver, leaving Atlanta in 1980. I'm still singing a bit these days in a Doobies Tribute act, URL above. Keep that Southern Rock alive brothers. Bobby J. Rogers

Hydra is one of the all time GREAT American bands. I'm thrilled that they have this site and are still rocking. I don't know everyone in Hydra but I can testify that this band has at least two of the nicest guys in show business in Spencer and Steve. How lucky I was in the early '80s to get to play onstage with Steve Pace every night for a rocking summertime Derek St.Holmes tour. I've never forgotten working with Steve and how fabulous a guy he was just to be around. A true Gent! as many of you probably know. (He even helped me to lauch my next band until I could get a fulltime drummer...that's the kind of guy he is). Best wishes to HYDRA! You are loved by many, Keep Rockin' - BD.

Hydra is still one of the finest groups ever....anywhere. Spencer K's guitar is like a rich, satisfying, favorite meal and Wayne Bruce has soul equal to Otis Redding and Ray Charles. Steve Pace is a drummers drummer. I look forward to hearing Tommy with this group, I know he's a smoking bass man with the other Atlanta groups he's involved with, so this shouldn't be any different. Hi from Ireland, I got your live Cd from Compact Dixie in France today and its AMAZING. There is such an energy and fire in the playing and a passion in the performances which leaves the others just gathering dust. 'Live All These Years'is an amazing return. Hopefully you'll get your other albums on CDin time and get over to Europe. Hydra still kicks-well done guys.

This web site is serving as a community of nostalgic Atlanta rockers. My band (shall remain anonymous) played with Hydra and Billy Preston in Mobile, AL in the winter of 1973. Hydra fired one of their roadies on the spot that night. Great music, though! Any feedback on the Kin-tel Studio reference?

Wow! I was inspired to get into a rock band when the "Atlanta Vibrations" played at my high school "East Atlanta High" back in 1968....Spencer, Steve, Bob Gianoni on bass and Jay Street on Keyboards. After several garage bands I finally wound up in a pretty good group called "Stillbrooke", and around 1970 we signed with "Discovery Inc." who also was booking "Hydra". We had heard that Hydra was about to put out their first album under the Capricorn label, and I was lucky enough to play in a band that opened for Hydra at a concert in "Freedom Park N.C." around 1971. Man It's great to see you guys back together again, your new bass man really seems to be in Motion.

Hi Guys, Well, I recently bought 2 copies of "After All These Years" and it is fantastic; the band sounds supercharged and exciting. Also, I just bought CD copies of "Hydra" and "Land of Money" on Ebay. So, I'm set until you do your next CD. Of course, I still have the tapes of the Nov. '72 show at Funochio's. Anytime I needed a Hydra fix I put those tapes on. Is this a great country, or what ?

With all of the excitement surrounding this reunion from the "old" fans like myself and a whole new group of fans experiencing Hydra for the first time, it is easy to overlook the fact that You guys must be bursting with excitement! You all have inspired as individuals have inspired countless musicians and brought joy to countless fans. As a group you reach a whole new level. a level that you set the first time around. the great thing about this is that NOW, you get to do it all over again! As our late great friend Randy Lewis once said, "It's all about respect"! You all have certainly earned it and are due. Thank you andI love you guys! Keep Kicking!

OMG! Here I am coming up on my 53(coughcough) birthday and feeling a bit of nostalgia so I Googled Spencer Kirkpatrick and what do I find? A major piece of my teenage years! I was a "groupie" I guess. Remember practicing in Nancy's living room, spencer? You look great, btw. You have never been too far from my thoughts. I guess I have compared every guitar player I ever heard to you. Hydra played our school dances at Hapeville High School. They made the yearbook! I knew Spencer back during Atlanta Vibrations days. I can't wait to order the CD's pack and hear that rockin' again and treat my husband to it also. Living in Illinois now but I would love to be on an email list if you have one. Thank God for Google!

Hey, Y'all! Most excellent site! Looking forward to hearing the album.(Do they still call 'em albums?) It's a damn shame that Stephen G. is not around to hear it. He'd be on the phone to everybody in the southeast, and beyond. Remember the Discovery show in Vero Beach, when I borrowed Walter's car to go for beer? I got stopped without my license, brought the cop back to the motel, and Sam Whiteside jumped out the bathroom window? Oh the things we lived through! Really good to see a lot of names from the past in the book!Best of luck, and if Tommy ever happens to not be able to make a gig...CALL ME! WOW! I just got my CD's and I'm impressed! It sounds great!...all the songs I would ask to hear from yall and MORE! Wayne's guitar work makes it happen, good job Wayne. I never liked what Johnny Sandlin did to your sound in the studio. Spencer, You've really stuck to your guns and not let the "later day guitar players" influence your work.....you're still the "Grand Master of Tone" and Licks in my book. I'm hearing a section of the music I never heard from the Terry Koehn rig.....bottom end!.... or, from a Rickenbacker bass, nice work Tommy! Steve, "kick it out!" Great work!....finally, I heard your kick drum!...great job of micing/mixing Ed! The added treat of the "Fly on the Wall" CD killed me! I laughed out loud with Spencers inflections, some things will never change!... I'm happy to say....Rave on Spencer! Words aren't enough to say how thrilled I am to have this CD!....THRILLED I AM!!!!!and Satisfied....the truth is out: Hydra Rocks! C-Ya Ricky Reyer PS, Thanks for the kind mention on the liner notes, you guys are a class act, and Frank Hughes wasn't.

I'll never forget the first time I heard Spencer Kirkpatrick play guitar. He was doing a show with Strange Brew at the Catacombs, and the group I was playing guitar with at the time, the Hampton Grease Band, was also on the bill. I leaned over to the Grease Band's other guitarist Harold Kelling and exclaimed, "This guy's great!" Harold, having been around longer than myself, was already familiar with what a terrific guitarist he was from back when Spencer played with the Atlanta Vibrations (who, by the way, opened for the Beatles when they played the Atlanta stadium). After the show, I met Spencer and soon discovered that he had a personality that was every bit as captivating as his music. We got to know each other and traded guitars over the years, and in fact, I got the original Gibson Flying V that I played in the Grease Band from him. When Hydra formed, it was obvious they were destined for greatness, and without a doubt, on an artistic level that greatness was more than achieved. On a commercial level though, they -- like so many other great bands from Atlanta back then -- were victims of the curse of not being from New York, California or London, where the music business was centered at the time. What Atlanta lacked though, in terms of music business activity, it more than made up for in terms of the music scene itself. The talent was stellar and unique, and the audiences were nurturing in a way that brought out the very best in the bands. Thankfully, Hydra has released this new CD, both for those of us who were lucky enough to be there the first time around, as well as for those who never had the good fortune to hear them, and wonder what all the fuss was about.

Hi guys--I was just playing around on the internet, looking for Hydra, and bang, here I am. Great to see some familiar names of people I haven't thought of in years. I actually had heard that ya'll were reunited and playing. Believe it or not, Bruce Hampton just played in my, now, hometown of Ocracoke, North Carolina, so who knows?, stranger things have happened. It was a good gig for Bruce, a strong turnout and lots of energy. It was great to see him after all these years. So come up here and play somewhere. Anyway, good luck to all of you. Those were some good old days. What a blast. Thanks.

This is to Alice V From Don Rice. Well Alice, if you must know, I was Hydra's first manager way back in the stoned age of 1969. Actually, that is not strictly correct; the band that I managed was Osmosis, which was comprised of Spencer, Steve, Wayne and Jim Yomans on bass. I left in late 1970 to persue my engineering career. Shortly after that, Jim left and was replaced with Trip Burgess from The Sweet Younguns. When Trip Joined the band, they changed their name to Hydra and Frank Hughes became their manager. The last time I saw them play was in Feb. 1976 when they opened for Jo Jo Gunn, here in Houston. Orville was on bass by that time. The only one who I have seen since then is Steve; he was living in the same house as my ex-wife and her husband, who cut a few songs in 1982 with Steve and Spencer. I've kept up with the guys through the years, by way of my ex and my brother. Yes, I do refer to CD's as records at times, because it is just another way of documenting a live or studio performance; you know, a record of the performance. Peace, Love and Harmony Alice, Don
