| Comments: | My father Vernon L. Terrill was a pilot with the 457th BG during WWII. He is still alive at 92 and often talks of his combat experience and the men he served with.
If I recall correctly he flew 27 missions over France and Germany. His arms are still peppered with flak. I am proud of my father and all who served this great country in defense of those in need during WWII and all the conflicts the United States has participated in over the years. Our family continues the tradition of serving our country. I was in the USAF from 1973 to 1980. My daughter served in the Navy during the Invasion of Iraq and my eldest son who is in the Army continues to serve, now in his second tour in Iraq. |

| Comments: | I felt that I had to contact you.
Some 6 years ago, on my first visit to the City of Peterborough, I came to the top of the A1 Motor way from London, and from this point could see in the distance on the right, the 4 Church spires of Connington, adjacent to Glatton Air Base. This area is a flat plain and easy to see. Something stirred inside me, an empathetic feeling that a great episode or event had taken place here. Being of an enquiring mind I decided on my return journey home to investigate the area. This was before the erection of the memorial by the roadside. Sure enough my curiosity proved correct. In the Churchyard is the wonderful sculpture of the airman looking skywards, and further along the narrow road, remains of the main concrete runways. At the time I had no idea that an enormous historical event had taken place in this location. The new memorial is moving and I can only say that for future generations I trust they will be equally moved and understand that the tyranny and evil that existed at the time is never forgotten. That the bravery of all concerned is never wasted, and the energy that still exists today is maintained, to counter any further adverse action against democracy. Incidentally visiting the Duxford Imperial War Museum with my young son Asher last month, I discovered there a display cabinet near to the Flying Fortress exhibit, located in the American aircraft hanger, which outlines a report from one Sergeant Harry Graham a gunner in a B-17, concerning a piece of flak shrapnel which caused a fire on board his plane. The actual piece of shrapnel is there to see. Graham and his crew were based at Glatton, and this story confirmed to me why Glatton has this extraordinary atmosphere to this day. | Comments: | I was saddened to hear of Mr. Reese's passing so recently. He seems to have been very dedicated to this web site which is an awesome archive. He contacted my mother about 10 years ago asking abut my father, Donald Scheuch, who had served on his crew at one time.
I came across the site quite by accident and I want to thank you for preserving the history of very young brave men who served our country. My father, a navigator who was serving with another crew, was a POW after his plane was shot down during the November 2nd Merseberg raids. To my surprise, this web site includes a description from the pilot (Lt Samuel H. Schimel) relating how my father had to scramble for his parachute before being blown out of the plane. As it was typical, he did not talk much about his experiences. After his retirement, he got involved with the local POW group and he went to England in the late 1980’s with his sons on a tour that included the Glatton air base. He passed away in 1993. This site was a wonderful find. |

| Comments: | My sister just sent me the info about our father, Ted M. Richardson. He is in the picture of the unnamed crew in the Tarfu aircraft photo. He is the front kneeling crew member on the left of the photo. I was thrilled to see the photos and other info. We have been looking for a long time for info about my dad's WWII experiences. Dad left the service in 46 or 47 and went to Oklahoma A & M university and became a veterinarian. He was recalled to the service in 57 I believe and remained in the Air Force until 1975. He served a tour in Vietnam from 67-68. He had been loaned to the Marines in 1965 and we lived near Camp Pendleton until he left for Vietnam. We lived in England at Lakenheath/Mildenhall in the early sixties and my sister was born there in 1962. During our stay in England, an F-100 Super Sabre jet crashed into our home. The pilot ejected as the jet flamed out. The jet was loaded with ammunition and our half of a base housing duplex was a total loss. I got my two younger sisters out a back window. This occurred in Aug. of 1962. It was a great adventure at the time. Thanks so much for having this material available. My father passed away in 1983 partially due to his Vietnam experience. We are extremely proud of our father. My middle child is in the Air Force having gone through Colorado School of Mines on an AF scholarship. He is currently stationed in Colorado Springs and will be a Captain in January and probably on his way to a year long stint in Korea in the summer. We have always been an AF family. Our son served a tour in Afghanistan last year.
Thanks again, Peggy R. Harmer |

| Comments: | my father flew with the 457th in the 751st squadron. His name was Jack Gregory. My dad has never talked too much about the war until recently and to me it is a testimony to the "Greatest" generation who served and did what they had to do in spite of the odds against them. The more I read, the more I'm in awe of what these men did for our freedom!! We've had the opportunity to go see visiting B-17's and the look on his face was incredible. I think what touched me most was when a man near us heard us talking and asked my father if he flew on one of these, when Dad said yes, the man said thank you and I think it brought tears to both our eyes. So from a proud son, I say thank you to the men who protected our freedom. |

| Comments: | I have been collecting and documenting the history of our World War II Veterans since 1998. I currently have over 200 veterans from all branches and ranks, in my “private library”. I have always been interested in World War II and what better way to learn this is to talk to the men and women who lived it. It is my way of keeping their memories and stories alive.
For every World War II Veteran we loose, a piece of history is gone forever. I believe that it should be told to someone who is willing to take the time to document their story. For the men and women, who served during World War II, they all have a great story to tell, whether they were in combat or sitting behind a desk. They answered the call to duty in a time when more the half the world was at war. When it is my time to pass on, all this information will be placed in the General Patton Museum in Chiriaco Summit, CA so that future generations will know what these men and women went through. One day, all of our Veterans from World War II, will have passed on and so will their stories. Peter Minix Former Marine Sgt. Indio, CA |

I wish I had been able to share it with my father, Sargeant Robert E. Bergeron. It is a part of his life which remained pretty much a mystery to his six children so it is gratifying to read about and view as a tribute to the many courageous men who served. Bob truly inspired his grandson, who is now a Pilot! |

I would love to hear stories about the experiences anyone in his group went through, or any veterans in general. I really want to have a deeper appreciation for what others sacrificed for me! Also, if anyone else knows my grandfather, I would appreciate hearing their stories as well! |

My father is Luther H. Smith of s/n 44-8557, lost on 18 April 1945 ("the last plane lost to enemy action by the 457th Bomb Group in WWII"). Dad's been suffering from Alzheimer's Disease for several years now and we lost all of his military records in a fire in 1969, so the information that I'm getting from your site is really helpful in putting puzzle pieces together. "The historical narrative ... as recorded immediately after the incident" was very helpful in understanding the events of the night. I have found two descendants of crew-members on this guest-book, and I look forward to contacting both. I would welcome correspondence from other family members of the crew. |

| Comments: | My 11 year old son and I recently had the pleasure of meeting Ed Buletti, who, as a young man flew in the 751st.Squadron of the 457th. Bomb Group as an engineer/top turret gunner.I noticed the Eighth Airforce pin on his lapel and had to ask him if he had flown with the "MIGHTY EIGHTH". Indeed he had, completing 25 missions in the second half of 1943. AS lovers of all things "aviation",especially WW II vintage,my son and I were enthralled and honored to meet this man. As we talked and became friends he seemed surprised that a younger man of my generation would even have known about what he and a generation of his peers had experienced. I assured him that I would never forget and that my son will never forget the service and sacrifice of his generation. |

I went up to the gentleman in the coat and asked him where he served. He said he was a radio operator on a B-17 in Glatton, England. His name is Del Schwab. He had just come back from visiting "Sentimental Journey" with the Commemorative Air Force. He is 85 years young and awesome. He served with the 748th Bomb Squadron, and his plane was the Wild Hare! Needless to say, I am honored to have met him. We exchanged phone numbers. I have a new friend. My dad served on a C-47 in New Guinea as a radio operator. | Comments: | As a little kid watching 12 0'clock high I feel in love with the B-17 I spent countless hours over Germany on board the B-17.
of course this all took place within my imagination, and I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt my single bed didn't look like the inside of a B-17 to anyone but me ,I shook the hell out of the thing riding the flak to my primary target. Why am I telling you this? Well it's because back then my games were just excitment filled war play. know living in palm spring where the confederate airforce keeps their B-17 I have had a chance to tour the inside of the aircraft. even safely on the ground once inside and seeing how small it is I suddenly understood the fear that must have been felt when the crew would see a fighter coming at them with its wings blinking and they had nowhere to go. to do it once is awesome. to go back up time after time knowing what was in store for them, well I can't begin to imagine what that could do to someone. Everyone of you that flew and survived and to those who didn't make it home. You are all my HERO'S and I just wanted to say thank you for your part in seeing that I was born 16 years after the fact As a free American. God Bless You All. |

I was just looking to see if I was related to anyone back then. I googled my last name and came up with S/Sgt. Alfred F. I am in the Civil Air Patrol, (USAFA) for the past 20 years, I am 61 years old now and just have a sence that I was a part of someone's life back then because of my love of aircraft, and something that just draws me back to WW II. I don't think that I can explain that any farther with out sounding a bit wierd. Anyway, just thought it would be nice if I was related to a hero like Sgt. Waichunas. |

We are doing a history of Earl Edward Woodward (B17g 97070)crashed at La Goulafriere after a raid on Oschersleben 25 April 1944. He subsequently escaped through the French Underground. To make a long story short, we have a number of Earl's photos that you do not have, and identification of certain crew members they you may not have... I haven't had time to check all of your photos, but if I can supply identifications at a later time I will be happy to do so. As a young man who has grown up within 5 miles of the Glatton Airfield, and who is constantly reminded of the freedom which the war ultimately brought to people like myself, It is just fantatic to be able to learn about the operations by the 457th Bomb group, and indeed other groups which were based in the area. I think myself very lucky to be born into the free world where the People who 'made it possible' still live, and can see the results of their efforts. | Comments: | A good day to you Some of the veteran’s binders, I have done, are over 60 pages and some are as small as 6 pages. I have been collecting the history of our World War 2 veterans since 1998, in the form of copies of documents and pictures, and the military history of that veteran and his crew or crews. I have been very fortunate to have interviewed, either by e-mail / snail mail or in-person or over the phone. I currently have 180 World War II veterans, from all branches, in my private library. I do feel that the stories of the men and women who fought or took part in one of the largest conflicts, that lasted 6 years, at the cost of millions of lives should be told to some who is willing to take time to document it. For every World War 2 veteran we loose, a piece of history is gone forever, plus its my way of keeping the memories and stories alive for what I hope is a long time. How much information you wish to share with me is up to you. Feel free to ask me any thing you wish. I hope to hear back from those who to share their story with me. Thank you

I bought a foto album from a collector and in it are pictures, etc. There are 9 negatives of soldiers climbing on a B-17 which has the nose art name of “The Gadget “. There is the name “Sergt. Smith”. Does anyone know if there are crewmembers alive? I found some info: “The Gadget”, plane number 434-38301, was originally (or later named) the “Liberty Belle”. It survived the war and was later destroyed in Arizona on or about 10 Dec 1945. One of its crews (it was common that more then one crew flew a plane) was Capt Donald S. Zigler, Capt William K. Dougherty, Lt Walter H. Sale, Lt Bernard M. Plaut, Lt Thomas W. Battley, Sgt William C. Adams, Sgt Gerald C. Cooke, Sgt Fredrick J. Moynihan, Sgt Kenneth R. Bostick, Lt Walter J. McGregor. | Comments: | Good afternoon,
I am writing to you to wish you the best and happiest times during your upcoming reunions. My name is Scott Ramsey and I try to attend as many WWII reunions in my area as possible. Since I would not be able to attend any of your reunions this year I would like, with your permission, to send you a video I have made of different WWII museums and memorials throughout the Southeast. I was thinking you may want to present it during your reunion. I hand one out to every WWII veteran I meet, or interview. I do small interviews and try to collect as many stories and personal histories from WWII veterans as I can. It is one way I in which I try to say thank you to our WWII veterans, plus it lets them see WWII museums and memorials they may not have had the chance to visit. The video is about 20 minutes and is basically a slideshow of pictures set to some big band and swing music. The cost for this video is nothing. I do not accept money for this video. I pay all shipping fees as well. The last reunion I attended was the 93rd BG in Savannah in July. I handed out 36 videos. What I would like to do is send you a copy so you could view it, and if you like it you could show it at the reunion. If anyone would like a copy all they have to do is get in contact with me and I will be glad to send them one. No charge. If you have any questions or if there is anything I can do for your group, please just let me know. If you know of any other WWII veterans they may like a copy, let me know. My email address is scott@theramseys.org Best regards, Scott Ramsey Please tell which group, division, or association you are with as I am getting a lot of request for the video. Thank you |

Because I was working, I only had a brief opportunity to chat with some of the vets - I do remember a brief converstion with a pilot but his name escapes me. I do recall that the entourage got bussed down the 10/28 runway and that brought back many memories so I'm told. It was a privilege to meet those people and I regret not attending the reunion dinner in Peterborough that evening, to which, I was so kindly invited.
Though I was born well after WW2 ended, I have a great appreciation of the sacrifices made on our behalf by that earlier generation. They will never be forgotten. Kind regards, Simon Wooler |

| Comments: | Thanks for your website and its immense detailed information.
I am of a generation who knows about the war mainly from accounts of my grandparents and parents. Let me try to add to your work and tell you in short a story I remember, in relation to your efforts to defeat the then-occupier of the netherlands. My granddad repeatedly told me about the happiness and satisfaction! they experienced when they heard the sound of hundreds of aircraft engines approaching in the last years of the war, getting stronger and stronger by the minute until the air seemed to be filled with it. Especially I recall him trying to make me feel the level of the noise of all these engines; spreading his arms, clenching his hands into fists and shaking them. You guys in the bombers were for long years the single proof to the people in occupied europe that there was an effort being made to liberate them. ---- I want to say "thanks to all of you veterans and to those who gave their lives". It is not forgotten by millions in different generations. |

| Comments: | I just discoved this site and am over whelmed by it. My father Lt. Kent H. Brittle was a proud member of the 457th group until his passing in 1995. I found a picture of him with his crew on this site that I had never seen before and plan on placing it next to a replica of a B-17 that he cherished. A month before he passed he was able to once again climb inside a B-17 and sit in the pilot's seat. It was as if he was at peace and young again.
Thanks for a great reminder of the sacrifices made to keep America free that were made in the past and that are still being made today. GOD BLESS AMERICA. |

| Comments: | Hi! Found the site really interesting. While my WWII knowledge is quite limited, I would like to point out that the "Group Mission #112" strike photo series is slightly misidentified. It was a munitions factory, and it was north of Weimar. More specifically, it's the Buchenwald Concentration Camp, and the area burning is the SS barracks. The factory facilities are to the right and upper right of the camp. Here's a good link.. http://www.buchenwald.de/index_en.html |

| Comments: | I offer my sincere appreciation and gratitude to everyone involved in keeping the 457th BG site alive. I am one of four daughters of Lt. Hubert M. Ange, navigator 750th Squadron. I have always had enormous interest in WWll and have the utmost admiration and respect for those who served in any capacity.
My dad just turned 86 and has finally started talking about his military experience, so I have been gently prodding him. Your site has a wealth of information and has been instrumental in assisting my dad's recollections. He is much more willing to talk when I ask him about a specific mission or a crew person's name. I cannot thank you enough for posting this information and providing a source of knowledge where future generations can continue to learn and perhaps understand better how they got to where they are. Thanks to The Greatest Generation! If anyone reading this remembers anything about my dad, including his perfectionist stubborn nature :), I would love to hear from you. Sincerely, Catherine Ange Loewe |

| Comments: | This is a fascinating web site. Like a lot of men from that era, my father (Jack Kelsey) did not talk much about the war so it is great to have a place to come and learn and reflect. | Comments: | HELLO TO ALL VETERANS OR FAMILY OF:
This is my 8th year of compiling and collecting data on our World War 2 veterans, it has really been a learning experience for me to communicate with men like yourself or the family of veterans. I currently have over 170+ World War II veterans, from all branches, in my private library. None of this information is given out or published for a monetary gain. I have always been interested in World War II for many years and it is just my way of keeping the memories and stories alive. If you wish to share this information with me, please e-mail at pdmmm@msn.com I would greatly appreciate adding you to my library. I look forward to hearing from you. My relative, Col. Wade E. Knudson U. S. Army, Retired, passed away Dec. 29, 2004. At he's funeral I learned during WWII he flew with the 457th and reached the rank of Captian. According to your loading list he flew with the 748th, 749th, and 750th as a co-pilot. I have a question. Is there a way to tie the A/C# on the loading list to a serial#? |

My uncle, Arthur Richards, was a flight officer with the 750th BS, shot down on mission #112.
