Like the photos of ST.Peters Church & Cemetery ,love to see more if they exist, have always been intrested in the cemetery, now under water, cant belive 663 burials left unmarked when flooded. I have photographed most of the stones put in Section "N" of Lakeview Cemetery, very intresting.

I think many Wellanders are confused about the history of the canals and locks - I've been trying to piece together the story which is a patchwork. The first feeder canal went only as far as Welland and there was a wooden aqueduct which ran alongside Niagara Street or North Main. There was a lock there as well. The third canal and aqueduct was a stone structure built on the east side. There is very little evidence of either. Recently they've uncovered some of the stone structure which is behind the Welland Civic Centre and Library. The first canal lock can be found at the end of lock street.

Very nice project you've put together. Quite interesting and enlightening. I doubt most southern Ontarions have any idea of these old locks, let alone much about the current canal. So sad! I don't really ever recall much being taught about it in school either (60's and 70's). Ironic, when so much is being made of "heritage" in the local growth hotspots, this real unique history is languishing away into ruin. Thankyou for all your efforts. M Knecht

Thankyou for a wonderful historical look at all of the canals. Your photographs show precisely and accurately where these great locks are all located. My own grandfather worked to create the 3rd Welland canal system, so it is particularly interesting for me to get a close up view of how these locks were built, mainly by immigrant workers new to Canada.

Wonderful website! I have been researching the Welland Canals for sometime as an amateur history buff - and I was especially delighted to see the overlay map you have of the Old German Church (later St. Peter's Church) and flooded burial grounds in Thorold! I knew the approximate area for years and even ventured down to the 'poundage' site while it was drained during the winter to discover some old, long forgotten headstones! But until your map - I always thought that the church/cemetery site was more North of the Poundage area - next to the current pumphouse. Thanks so much for clarifying what I've been trying to verify for ages! Great job! Also ~ there is another 'landlocked' section of the 3rd canal - past the 'Guard Lock' in Thorold if you continue south on the foot path. It's a popular area for locals to swim & fish. It's very close to the Village of Beaverdams in Thorold, where I live. The entire area is full of hiking & riding trails and a lot of natural beauty.
Keep up the great work on your site!

I sincerely believe that the Welland Canal area should be designated as a historic area. The sections behind General Motors in St. Catharines would make a fantastic eco-park for canoeing, kayaking, scuba diving (there is a shipwreck in there) and other activities. Every year I feel sorrow as the area slowly decays. Keep up the good work with this website!
