| Comments->: | Hello All,
Need some help please. Am looking for the Airmans Magazine issue from 1972, 1973, 1974 or 1975 that did a cover story on the 11 Day War (Linebacker II). There were a lot of photos taken on Guam, the centerfold showed a bunch of guys on the hammerhead hilltop watching the bombers take off. Would very much like to acquire this issue or will pay for a very nice color xerox copy of the whole issue plus the shipping costs. Does anyone have a copy of such or direct me to a library or museum that would have a copy. Thx, Mike |

As Air Policemen securing the aircraft and wing, we got to know and respect a number of the air crew. Standing 12 to 16 to 24 hour alerts in late '62 and early '63 (you didn't think it was instantly over after October, did you?) we ended up sharing the fatigue, stress and discomfort that the alert crews constantly lived with. It was a real love/hate relationship and every day I thank God that I had that experience. |

Worked D models and G models on Guam. Remember the last day of bombing and launching anything that would fly and drop bombs. What a site! Glad I didnt work recovery! Spent last two months on Guam mostly in the alert shack. Still an E3 when I got put on alert duty. I guess I was one of very few at my rank, alert and crew cheif qualified. Other than better sleeping accomodations I would have preferred staying on preflights. It would be great to talk to anyone who was at the "Griff" or at Anderson or Minot during those years. |

| Comments->: | sirs, I am trying to research a bombing incident at a Special Forces camp in Vietnam around the month of Aug. 1968. the camp had been under heavy ground attack for several weeks. A very hush hush group group of Air Force personel arrived in camp and proceeded to install some kind of radio transformers to trianglate the camp. This is where the facts end. The stories around the camp was that we now had the capability to call in low level night air strikes (including B-52s) anywhere around the camp. With in days north Viet Tanks were discovered approaching the camp and 3 to 6 tanks were reported destroyed by bombs after night. I was serving at the camp at the time and always wondered if this was even possible. I have tried to get some info of the internet but there is so much available I am unable to wade through it. I thought one of your members might know how to access this history Thank You, Mel Thornton

| Comments->: | Began my AF career in the 92nd FMS (hydraulic spec) at Fairchild in 1957. There was 1 B-36 left and 1 brand new D model (tail 5673 I believe) when I arrived. Eventually there were 90 Ds and 30 tankers on the ramp before the wing split up moving some to Minot and some to Glascow. I spent my first 7 years there and thought I never would leave SAC not that I particularly wanted to. Then out of gratitude for my service, I was sent to Thule for a year. Of my 26 years service, those first with that magnificent aircraft will always be the high point. Loved to catch tanker flights and watch refuelings.
Great memories. |

I see Frank Schade's name here too and remember him from Fairchild. He made a big impression on me when I showed up there in 84 with my one stripe. I went into the hanger on my first day(night) of work--scared shitless. Here comes Frank Schade and he sits me down and gives me advise I'll never forget. I remember what he said. "Always make sure you are early to work and find something to do. I don't care what--just show you are eager to work. Grab a broom, sweep floors--whatever. There is always something to do." Frank was 100% right and I still carry that ethic today. I don't know what became of him and I'm sure he doesn't remember me (I was at Farichild only a short time) but thanks for the advice Frank. |

I screwed my life up but good.Did 6 months and recieved a BCD. in 71. Alot of time went by and then I contacted the V.A. in my home town and talked to some poeple about my short coming. They told because I did my time over seas in time of war, I would be able to march with them anytime. So on May 25 2009 I suited up and marched for the first time. | Comments->: | I was stationed at Kincheloe AFB,MI from Nov 1963 to Oct 1968 in the 449th FMS Engine Shop. I worked both in the shop and the line. I was run qualified on both KC135 and B52 and loved it when I had to do an alert start on the B52 (can still smell the oder of the shotgun starters and good old JP-4). I think I worked every plane on the base at one time or another.
Read a post about the PRIDE posters all over the place. In the Engine shop it was " The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer". My wife and I were married at the base chapel and our oldest daughter was born in the base hospital. Lived on base at 14 Long. Does anyone know where I could find a list of both tanker and bomber tail numbers assigned to the 449th? From Kincheloe I went to Eielson AFB,AK (6th CAMS)and worked on the KC and RC135,s. Went on to be a Flight Engineer on C141A and C5-A and retired after 23 yrs 16 days. I have many memories of my military career but the most vivid and fondest are of Kincheloe and working those wonderful B52's and fishing at Trout Pond not too far from base. Am still in the aviation business working for a major airline as an A&P Mechanic and while I work on both airframe and powerplant I still like working engines the most. Will retire for good next year. |

I was on a Buff recovery crew....long, long hours on the flightline! I went to Guam, while you were at Kadina. I spent a total of 1 year on Guam, came back to Mather and got out in June 1966.I'm sure we must have run into each other at onetime or another! If you or anyone else was stationed at Mather from 1962 to 1966, I would like to hear from you!

These airplanes I may have accidently took pictures of. 60-049 won the Bomb com contest with 2 shacks in England in 1967 and Corgi from England made a die cast model of it to sell. ( been going for many years ) I purchased his book, " Where the Buf Fellows Roamed " and it is, at least for me fascinating reading. I am a huge B-52 fan and to meet someone who actually flew it was outstanding. The man is a credit to the USAF and the US Military.

We plan to do what is needed this summer and have a target of $10,000 to do it. Any donations would be appreciated. We will also have a nice lithograph of the last B052H to leave Sawyer for a donation of $100 or for purchase. Search for K.I. Sawyer Heritage Air Museum for additional information.

We also had a G-model once upon a time, tail number 58-158. But, the Wing Commander, a Tanker Troop, determined that one Buff on base was enough. The nose, complete with cockpit, was removed and the rest of the jet scapped. |

assigned to the 92nd OMS until ACC came along, and then to the 325th BS. performed as Assistant NCOIC of the Air Craft refurb (glossy Eagle) program, and then fell under the 92nd Maintenance Squadron. during my time at Fairchild I lived in the dorms of 631,622, and 623. after I married my jet engine specialist wife I became the dorm manager of 622 for the 92MS. In 1994 I was PCS to Dyess AFB and was forced to work on the B-1B. I enjoyed my time with the BUFFs and look back on those day with great memories, cause even a bad day on a BUFF is better than a good day on the B-ONE. |

| Comments->: | I was part of the last DFCS troops at Fairchild AFB from '85 to '92. I started with the 92 AMS and initially worked the ASG-15 FCS on the G's and then retrained over to the ASG-21 FCS on the H's when the Wing converted to H's. Eventually we went to 2 level maintenance and I worked my last year in the 92 OMS in the avionics flight. Working FCS was the best job I ever had in the Air Force - just truly a great and satisfying job. The B-52 is a fantastic marvel of engineering and a fine testament to the fine builders of Boeing Aircraft Company. |

| Comments->: | I just acquired an original B-52D 100 missions patch which is attributed to Col. Paul E. Holmes. Sadly, I understand Col. Holmes has passed away. It appears as if he may have flown with the 348th BS (?), 99th BW out of U-Tapao RTAFB, Thailand. I'm hoping to learn more about his combat history in SEA, and would sure enjoy hearing from anyone who could provide additional information, corrections, or just fill in some of the blanks.
All the best, Dale R. Messimer |

| Comments->: | In reply to Mike McComb's message, I was stationed at Fairchild at the time of the B-52 crash in Arizona. The tail number was 57-6479. I was working that night in Job Control and received the first call from 15th Air Force saying we had a bomber down, and that there were survivors. It was an eerie night with the flightline wanting to know when the plane would be landing. We couldn't say anything for about two hours, then CNN broke the story. We called the flightline supervisors in and gave them what we knew and told them to gather all of the maintenance documents for the plane. During my career at Fairchild, which was the whole thing except for basic and tech school, we lost the G-model, an A-model tanker, and later the H-model that went down on base. Thanks for sharing the pictures Mike. |

Don't know if you are aware, but we now have 6 B-52H models here in the "Boneyard" first one arrived in July (61-0023). I have pictures of all of them if anybody is interested, and yes, they were cleared by our PA office. Jim |

| Comments->: | The B52 is the most beautiful airplane ever! When I was a kid, my family lived just off Ellsworth AFB from 1970 - 1972. I have many fond memories of those years, and of that airplane in particular. Lately, I've become reacquainted with the BUFF through reading novels by Dale Brown (Flight of the Old Dog; Air Battle Force; and others). This is a great website. I hope to join soon. |

| Comments->: | I was stationed at Fairchild AFB 1967-1971. Served the 92nd Supply Squadron at the Field Maintenance Supply Point. In 1968 was deployed to Anderson AFV augmenteed into munitions assigned to Bomb Assembly Building building 500 & 750's. returned to Fairchild and became the Technical Compliance MOnitor for all B-52 upgrades. My greatest memory and honor was to serve on the Fairchail HOnor Guard 1969-1971 serving as detachment NCOIC in 1971. Anone that has ever served as Honor Guard knows the internal discipline needed to stand tall without outward emotion - even when presented the memorial flag to a wife or mother. God bless you all! |

| Comments->: | I was a KC-135 boom operator during the Vietnam time era. I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB, SD where I had the oppertunity/honor of being MSgt Sam Turner's next door neighbor and friend. We had talked about his MIG kill a few times but he never made a big deal of it. He later was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was medically grounded. He made SMSgt about this time and had received treatments. I was sent pcs to Sheppard AFB, TX and later found out he had passed away. Later on in my career I attended the Senior NCO Accademy and while touring the small museum I was almost in tears when I saw his picture and the short article about him. He and his wife, Gretta (sp) will always be special to me and I still think about them even after he has been gone for quite some time now. I know he was looked upon as a hero by fellow gunners and crew members. |

Hope the H's make it through the next generation of upgrades, powerplants and avionics, to continue to be a workhorse for advanced weapon systems. Take care to all those involved in the Stratofortress world. Does anyone remember Sonny Saebens, Gil Elmy, Freelander, Frank Schade, Bud Coyle, Bud Rogers, or other crew chiefs that went unheralded? |

Jamestown was beautiful, and our evening boat excursion amoung the big ships was really classic. Hope to see more of you next time out in 2010. A great time had by all. Thanks to Dennis Thibodeau for a great job as our president and MC. And, of course, a special thanks to Wayne and Karen Pittman, who were honored at the Saturday night dinner by the Association. |
