There was also a squadron of F-102 interceptors. 482nd FIS I recall. The 4th Fighter Wing owned the base and had F100s when I got there and F105s when I left. At that time it was a busy place. |

| Comments->: | So it’s really been a long time since I was in the A.F. (Oct. 65 to Oct. 69) I like to check in on the rest of the SAC trained killers on this web site from time to time. It seems like you guys are mostly old farts like me. Right after I got on flying status I took a TDY up to Westover Mass. to support some big thing going to happen in Spain or somewhere. Any way we landed on an empty base because all of Westover A.F.B. was doing Arclight I guess you could say. Anyway, it’s Sunday afternoon and the flight crew leaves so it’s just me and the crew chief standing there out in the middle of nowhere. In about 2 minutes, the OMS truck shows up and this TSGT says who are you guys? Where are you from? BLAH! BLAH! BLAH! He tells the crew chief to jump in; I want to show you something. He said to me “we’ll be right back” and he tells me “and park that tanker coming down the ramp” I said “Hey wait a minute I am a jet mechanic I don’t park airplanes”. By that time he was already gone, so I’ve been on this base less than 5 minutes, I am alone on a huge flat empty airplane parking lot, and there’s a KC-135 taxiing towards me. I felt like Cary Grant in that movie “North by Northwest”. Man, did I ever fake my way through that, after the ACFT stopped the A/C just stared out the window at me like “who the hell is that idiot”? Anyway, I never made it to Spain with Tail No. 604 (she was our lead the fleet bird). I took the Westover courier (AC-97) down to Charleston A.F.B. then took the Ramey courier (A C-54) down to Ramey. Back in those days, you could travel all up and down the Eastern Seaboard using those two planes but most of you, guys knew that.
In June of 69 my wife was in the Ramey Hospital trying to give birth, she had been in there eight days and nothing doing, the baby just wouldn’t come out. It was Sat the 27th and I had been putting off flying that month until she had the baby. Now it’s the last day to fly, if I don’t get four flying hours no flight pay. I went to see my wife before the flight and she was all “It looks nothing’s going to happen tonight any way so just go fly and don’t worry about it. Then the hospital Chaplin came by and we all talked a little bit. He said lots of babies are born during a full moon. I said nice talking to you not knowing what he meant. So the mission was to refuel a Puerto Rican A.N.G. F-104. . .that means using a drough. During the refueling, (the A/C was Major Anthony Vatalie), I went down to the boom pod to watch the refueling. It was eventful . The drough broke in half and gave the 104 a JP4 bath. He broke off but didn’t catch on fire. So while I ‘am watching this happen I see this big full moon that the Chaplin was talking about, afterword I went to the jet shop to call the hospital and the nurse said congratulations your wife had a boy! We named him Daniel Anthony and I heard Major Vatalie got promoted the next cycle. I don’t mean to minimize real war stories because there were lots of those but I remember lots of good times too. I know it wasn’t all good but the 72nd Bomb Wing was a good outfit. I heard all the G models bombed Laos and Cambodia. Well what are you going to do? I am putting pen to paper to tell this little story, my computer skills are minimal, my wife (the same one from before) will type it in for me. | Comments->: | Got to Glasgow from Tech School (Pneudraulics) in June 1966 just before they left for sunny Guam. Got left behind and thought I had it made but got sent to Elsworth AFB South Dakota for 6 months working with the 28th FMS Hydraulic Shop.
Went to Kadena for 4 months when the Pueblo was captured. Returned to Glasgow in time for it to close and got shipped to Little Rock and the B-58's. When they retired the 58's (in 70) I got out. Been reading the "Crew Dog" series by Tommy Towery. Very good descriptions of the B52 and how it was used. |

Can't recall the Sac wing there I was attached to. Worked on B52's F and G aircraft and also on KC135's. Went to U-Tapao in Thailand from July69 to July70. Worked only on B52 D aircraft there. Even though it was a lot of hard work I wouldn't trade a minute of it. Met a lot of great guys there both to work with and socialize with. Was attached to the 307th FMS at U-Tapao. |

I was an electrician AFSC:423X0 on "H" models at Homestead AFB 1966-1968 then PCS 18mo to Andersen AFB Guam where I transitioned to the "D" models. Worked many long hard hours in Guam and loved every minute of it. Was assigned to 8th AF, 19th Bomb Wing at Homestead then 2nd AF 3960 CAMS in GUAM. (Don't recall our wing # but might have been 47th) I served with finest people I have ever know and long to hear from anyone who served during my tours at either Homestead & Andersen. I did my Tech School at Chanute in 54th Student Squadron under the infamous S.Sgt Mayo. |

| Comments->: | I have many fond memories of time spent @ Lackland, Chanute and Kincheloe Jan.1973-Nov.1975. Apprehended for indecent exposure 1974 in Kincheloe Alert Pad parking lot (off duty helping my pal Terry Taylor work on his BMW RS750.) Took what I thought was a discreet whiz next to my van, but was seen by an officer's wife in one of the trailers used for flight crew's family visits. She called the MPs and I was hauled over to the cop shop where, after a severe ass-chewing, I was released DUE TO LACK OF EVIDENCE. I swear, that's what the man said. Made buck SGT. Nov.1 1975 and attended Commanders breakfast where I had my ass chewed for wearing short sleeves (with my new stripes)on a cold weather base after Nov.1. During one period I spent so much time on the alert pad that when I returned to Bomber Branch the new Branch NONCOM didn't know who I was. There's a dozen more,I hadn't thought about this stuff for years. I never really liked being in the AF, but I sure loved working on those BUFs. Would like to contact Victor McBride, Terry Taylor, Glen Miller and Capt.Zack (nickname,I think)Tomzack. |

"This is a tremendous accomplishment and shows the first step on the way to the realization of President Obama's vision, of a world without nuclear weapons," said Deputy Secretary of Energy, Daniel Poneman "I cannot begin to describe the difference between writing about all the acronyms of arms control and start treaties and solve treaties and actually being in there with these professionals as they actually crank apart the high explosive that surrounds the pit." | Comments->: | Does anyone who was at Guam in 1972/73 remember a troop names Meyers who was caught in the wheelwell of a buff on take off. I seem to recall he was a center ramp electrician who was fixing a generator problem redball on the hammer head. He had swapped cannon plugs on a box in the rt fwd wheelwell. when it fixed the problem he started to change the box. About the time the pilot asked the crew chief to check something in the back of the acft. When the crew chief started back to the front, he saw the launch truck driving off and asked the pilot of everything was still green? upon receiving an affirmative response, he pulled the chalks and marshalled the acft directly onto the runway for takeoff without realizing Meyers was still in the wheelwell. The launch truck had driven off because they couldn't hear the radio. |

| Comments->: | I voluntered and worked as a munitions maintenance specalist (MMS), from 1967-1969 in Florida and Thailand. The work was 12hrs per day, 6 days per week. The special affection I developed for the B-52 and its tactical weapons is with me even through today. During that period of time we were asked to volunteer (told I was especialy qualified) for either munitions work or corrosion control work; painting the curbs on our next assigned base. Because a select-few of us volunteered we recieve speial treatment. I and the other select few from sister flights were pulled from morning PT and taken for coffee and pastries while hearing lectures and watching classified movies showing tactical jet aircraft performing bombing missions (training-type). So I volunteered for munitions training on railroad ties. One more thing. In order to qualify as a volunteer, I had to call my mother and "ask\tell her what I was about to do". Soon, I was introduced to the USAF inventory of tactical munitions. I tell you this because then, B-52s were designed strictly as stategc, Cold-War, tools. But times changed and I found myself qualified for bomb assembly in sunny South-East Asia; I wanted Colorado and snow skiing. |

| Comments->: | I was a copilot for a few years up at old Loring AFB, Maine. I would love to hear from anyone in the 69th BW. I was with the 69th from February 1974 to May 1976. My wife and I had two SAC babies while we were there. Our oldest was born int he middle of a hell of a snow storm. The chill factor was -60 and my wife thought she would get frost bite leaving the house after her water borke on the way to the base hospital. If anyone knows anything about Lt. Doug Boggie, please pass it lanog to me. |

| Comments->: | Great site. Really got the memories going. Too many to mention here. '71 thru '75. PCS, Beale (456th FMS, Hyd Mech B52G-KC135Q [AFSC 421X2] E-4 (Sgt)). I remember flying to Guam and losing a leading edge slat from the right wing of our tanker and was forced down at Wake Island. Took a couple days to get the part. The locals were very nice and treated us like Kings. Lived in the the Tin Wharehouses on Guam (yuck). Better than the tents though.
It was so cool to watch the 52s take off at night over Pati's Point. Rode launch Truck 12 hours a day, 6 days a week for six months. Worked on D's & G's mostly. It was hot, muggy and wet most of the time. All my other TDYs were more comfortable than Guam, but not as much fun. By the way, how come we never got a service ribbon for our efforts in support of the Vietnam war? |

| Comments->: | We were lucky crew S13 with the 28th Bomb Squardron at Robins AFB, Georgia, and I was the only crew member who stayed with that crew number through the 3+ years at Robins AFB and three tours to Andersen AFB/Utapao before leaving the Air Force after my last mission (had to get that last month's combat pay!) on January 1, 1973 - after the Eleven Days of Christmas. About 165 mission (lost count), 3 DFC's, and one of our bombers (60-665) hanging from the rafters at the AF Museum at Wright-Patterson (shot up during a bomb run over North Vietnam on April 9, 1972 and recovered into Da Nang)... S13 always played hard on the ground, but we were all business in the air, and those big green lizards kept bringing us home. I flew with some great men but have lost track of most of them. AC's were Windol Weaver, now a State Representative in Maine, and John Alward (deceased), and I'm in contact with Steve Dring, our boy gunner. Please contact me if you know of others on S13, stationed on BUFs at Robins during those years, or if you just want to swap some stories. |

When it was first placed there on ststic display it still had the tail number painted on it. It also had the Bombs still painted on the side indicating the number of missions flown over Viet Nam. That was the plane I was assigned to during our first deployment to Guam. My Crewchief was nicknamed Halftrack but I can't seem to remember his actual name. The asst. was Alan Delert. |

Being a member of the Air Police squadron at Altus AFB Oklahoma (1960-62) Torrejon AB Madrid Spain (1962-64) and Wurtsmith AFB Michigan in the Strategic Air Command, I spent many days, evenings and nights guarding many B-52s, B-47s and KC-135s. Went TDY from Wurtsmith to TanSonNhut AB, Saigon VietNam (1964-65) but no B-52s were stationed in Saigon. |

Lots of Alerts. Pulled a TDY to Utapao on the D model. The Buff was a mentally, physically and emotionally challenging aircraft to crew. But of all the Bombers ever flown, it has to rank up there among the very best. It sure brought us back from Hanoi. The crew chiefs and maintenance guys did a great job keeping those old war horses flying. Those guys were surely the best. I owe them a lot....THANKS |
