It took my son's service in the Marine corps, and two missions in Iraq,2006&2008 for me to see what is was all about. I lost my mom just before I went over and on top of that I got my girl friend pregent. She was only 16. I was 19. Well after I got back I lost it all and went over the hill. I screwed my life up but good.Did 6 months and recieved a BCD. in 71. Alot of time went by and then I contacted the V.A. in my home town and talked to some poeple about my short coming. They told because I did my time over seas in time of war, I would be able to march with them anytime. So on May 25 2009 I suited up and marched for the first time. WHAT A TRIP.I will march as long as I can for those who never made it back!!! Roger and out

KEPT ME FROM LOOKING BACK AT THAT HISTORY,BEING A VIETNAM VET 1969-1973 I DID NOT FEEL THE SUPPORT THE MILTARY TODAY IS GETTING FROM THE PUBLIC SO I DIDN'T TALK MUCH OR TRY TO REMEMBER BACK TO THE DAY. TIME CHANGES THINGS AND LATELY MY FAMILY IS BEGINNING TO RECOGNIZE MY EFFORTS DURING MY TIME SPENT SERVINING MY COUNTRY WHICH I ALWAYS HAVE BEEN SO PROUD. I AM NOW TRYING TO PUT THIS HISTORY BACK IN THE FOREFRONT OF MY MEMORIES, THE ONLY PROBLEM NOW IS I JUST TURNED 60 YEARS OF AGE AND GETTING THE DETAILS BACK IS TRYING TO SAY THE LEAST.I AM HOPING PEOPLE OUT THERE MIGHT HELP ME WITH THE DETAILS (BOMB WINGS,SQUADRONDS,AWARDS THAT MAY HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO THE BOMB WINGS I SERVED, PATCHES,ETC.)I AM PUTTING TOGETHER A DISPLAY CASE AND WOULD LIKE TO INCLUDE AS MUCH OF THE STORY AS I CAN RECALL. Comments->: I was stationed at Kincheloe AFB,MI from Nov 1963 to Oct 1968 in the 449th FMS Engine Shop. I worked both in the shop and the line. I was run qualified on both KC135 and B52 and loved it when I had to do an alert start on the B52 (can still smell the oder of the shotgun starters and good old JP-4). I think I worked every plane on the base at one time or another.
Read a post about the PRIDE posters all over the place. In the Engine shop it was " The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer".
My wife and I were married at the base chapel and our oldest daughter was born in the base hospital. Lived on base at 14 Long.
Does anyone know where I could find a list of both tanker and bomber tail numbers assigned to the 449th?
From Kincheloe I went to Eielson AFB,AK (6th CAMS)and worked on the KC and RC135,s. Went on to be a Flight Engineer on C141A and C5-A and retired after 23 yrs 16 days.
I have many memories of my military career but the most vivid and fondest are of Kincheloe and working those wonderful B52's and fishing at Trout Pond not too far from base.
Am still in the aviation business working for a major airline as an A&P Mechanic and while I work on both airframe and powerplant I still like working engines the most. Will retire for good next year.

I was on a Buff recovery crew....long, long hours on the flightline! I went to Guam, while you were at Kadina. I spent a total of 1 year on Guam, came back to Mather and got out in June 1966.I'm sure we must have run into each other at onetime or another! ( been going for many years ) I purchased his book, " Where the Buf Fellows Roamed " and it is, at least for me fascinating reading. I am a huge B-52 fan and to meet someone who actually flew it was outstanding. The man is a credit to the USAF and the US Military.

We plan to do what is needed this summer and have a target of $10,000 to do it. Any donations would be appreciated. We will also have a nice lithograph of the last B052H to leave Sawyer for a donation of $100 or for purchase. Search for K.I. Sawyer Heritage Air Museum for additional information.

We also had a G-model once upon a time, tail number 58-158. But, the Wing Commander, a Tanker Troop, determined that one Buff on base was enough. The nose, complete with cockpit, was removed and the rest of the jet scapped.

assigned to the 92nd OMS until ACC came along, and then to the 325th BS. performed as Assistant NCOIC of the Air Craft refurb (glossy Eagle) program, and then fell under the 92nd Maintenance Squadron.

during my time at Fairchild I lived in the dorms of 631,622, and 623. after I married my jet engine specialist wife I became the dorm manager of 622 for the 92MS. In 1994 I was PCS to Dyess AFB and was forced to work on the B-1B.

I enjoyed my time with the BUFFs and look back on those day with great memories, cause even a bad day on a BUFF is better than a good day on the B-ONE.

I wiil never forget the power of the 52's on take off. The 101's were also very impressive. I sure miss watching a MITO exercise. The noise of the 52's on the main runway and the 101's taking off on the taxi ways. I visited there in the summer of 06 I could still feel the energy in the air. Looking forward to going back again.

I started with the 92 AMS and initially worked the ASG-15 FCS on the G's and then retrained over to the ASG-21 FCS on the H's when the Wing converted to H's. Eventually we went to 2 level maintenance and I worked my last year in the 92 OMS in the avionics flight. Working FCS was the best job I ever had in the Air Force - just truly a great and satisfying job. The B-52 is a fantastic marvel of engineering and a fine testament to the fine builders of Boeing Aircraft Company.

It appears as if he may have flown with the 348th BS (?), 99th BW out of U-Tapao RTAFB, Thailand. I'm hoping to learn more about his combat history in SEA, and would sure enjoy hearing from anyone who could provide additional information, corrections, or just fill in some of the blanks.

Comments->:In reply to Mike McComb's message, I was stationed at Fairchild at the time of the B-52 crash in Arizona. The tail number was 57-6479. I was working that night in Job Control and received the first call from 15th Air Force saying we had a bomber down, and that there were survivors. It was an eerie night with the flightline wanting to know when the plane would be landing. We couldn't say anything for about two hours, then CNN broke the story. We called the flightline supervisors in and gave them what we knew and told them to gather all of the maintenance documents for the plane. During my career at Fairchild, which was the whole thing except for basic and tech school, we lost the G-model, an A-model tanker, and later the H-model that went down on base. Thanks for sharing the pictures Mike.

We had talked about his MIG kill a few times but he never made a big deal of it. He later was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was medically grounded. He made SMSgt about this time and had received treatments. I was sent pcs to Sheppard AFB, TX and later found out he had passed away. Later on in my career I attended the Senior NCO Accademy and while touring the small museum I was almost in tears when I saw his picture and the short article about him. He and his wife, Gretta (sp) will always be special to me and I still think about them even after he has been gone for quite some time now. I know he was looked upon as a hero by fellow gunners and crew members.

I can't believe I retired in 1985 and the Buff is still performing and outlasting two of its replacements. It is amazing, considering the stress we put on it flying all that low level training in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Comments->:I was looking for the wing tip clearance (between the tip tank and ground) when a H model is taxiing. Is the wing tip closer to the ground than the bottom of the tip tank? How far from center line is this low point?

I'm asking because I think the new runway/taxiway signs at this AMC tanker base are too high to accomodate taxiing the BUF on the major taxiways. The tanker toads even decided to have their ramp parking restrict taxing a B-52 pass them.

This web site is awesome and I wish you continued success. I will join by year end.

Got some great info in 2004 from an air crew member that told me about my old bird, 60-059. If anyone currently working on her sees this, especially if you're her Crew Chief, I would love to hear from you!

Peace, out!
