| Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: | ANSWER FOR BOBBI FROM SOUTH CAROLINA |
| Your Question or Comment !! -: | Martin Green is listed as dying Nov. 3, 1864. With this date of death, his burial would be in one of the trenches. For your info, the 2nd Pa. Reserves was a state designation, becoming the 31st Pa. Volunteers upon entry into federal service. On June 1, 1864, Green was transferred to the 191st Pa. Vol. Inf. Reg., Co. A, to serve out the remainder of his enlistment and was with this regiment at the time of his capture on Aug. 19, 1864, at the Weldon RR. Other info on Green: age 21 at time of enlistment (Feb. 15, 1864) at Huntingdon, Pa., 5 ft. 9 inches tall, dark hair, gray eyes, farmer by trade. |

| Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: | ANSWER FOR KEN FROM NY |
| Your Question or Comment !! -: | Checking Brown's appendices, Bonfield does not show up. He would only be listed if he deserted while in prison, entered the hospital or died. His Feb. 27, 1865 discharge date as a prisoner leads me to believe he was at Salisbury as this date is when the prison closed. The Battle of Globe tavern is also known as The Weldon Railroad (for your info, near Petersburg, Va.) The info I find is Bonfield enlisted Nov. 29, 1861, in Phila. in Company D, 90th Pa. Inf. Reg. He was 19 years old, 5' 6 1/2" tall, blue eyes, light hair, and was a painter by trade. He was with this unit when captured, being transferred Nov. 26, 1864, to Company D, 11th Pa. Inf. Reg. He was discharged from this unit Apr. 15, 1865. |

| Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: | ANSWER FOR KEN FROM KENTUCKY |
| Your Question or Comment !! -: | This is a gray area; hopefully somebody more in know will help both of us. The prisoners who went to Ricmond by train for the exchange were those that were in the worst health. If they died on the train, it is unknown if they were taken off enroute or they simply finished the journey to Richmond for burial. I can only suggest checking with the National Park Service in Richmond to see if they have any info on this subject and if they can check their burial records for the Richmond area. |

| Your Question or Comment !! -: | I checked my Salisbury and Pennsylvania records; I basically have the same info you listed in your inquiry. Agnew enlisted Aug. 15, 1862, in Beaver Co., Pa., mustered into Federal service Aug. 25, 1862, in Harrisburg, Pa. Record indicates he was 24 yrs. old. I show him captured at Gettysburg, possibly in the Wheatfield on the afternoon of July 2. The 140th was involved in the fighting here but check the regimental history for other areas of involvement during Gettysburg. |

| Your Question or Comment !! -: | There is no list of just prisoners that I know of. I use the appendices in the back of Brown's book "The Salisbury Prison" as the best source. | Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: | ANSWER FOR CHRIS IRVIN FROM PA |
| Your Question or Comment !! -: | Checking several sources, it appears Hollinger was captured while on picket duty. Guessing, he was sent to Richmond before he went to Salisbury where there is no record of him in Brown's lists. When the prison closed at the end of Feb. 1865, those prisoners who could not walk were sent by train to Richmond for exchange. If this is the case for your relative, he died before he could be exchanged. I suggest contacting the Park Service in Richmond and ask them to check their cemetery lists. |

| Your Question or Comment !! -: | Samuel Hollinger (PA 209th, Company F) was held at Salisbury Prison. According to the military service file I received from NARA, he was captured on Nov 17th, 1864 and sent to Salisbury on Dec 4, 1864. At some point, he was sent to Richmond where he died on or about March 2, 1865. Would you have any information on when he left Salisbury and where he was sent? Also, if he died in Richmond, would you have any recommendations that could direct me to possible burial sites? Samuel is my great-great-great-grandfather. Thank you. |

| Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: | ANSWER FOR GERRY FROM PA |
| Your Question or Comment !! -: | I checked my available sources for Cpl. Christian Shoemaker, 98-A. The only info I locate shows he was captured, but not when or where, and that he died on Apr. 2, 1865, of cruel treatment while a prisoner. Salisbury was closed by the end of Feb. 1865, and Stoneman burned it during his raid on Apr. 12-13, 1865. When the prison closed, if Shoemaker was at Salisbury, he could have been sent to Union lines through Richmond, Va. or Wilmington, N.C. From either location, paroled Union prisoners went to Annapolis, Md., where they were given medical attention. Those healthy enough were sent back to their unit or sent home to recuperate. Since he died, Shoemaker could have been held at any of these locations, hoping for his health to improve, until he died. If you have definite info that his death was at Salisbury, I would appreciate you forwarding it to the e-mail address above as I am trying to compile accurate lists of Pa. soldiers at Salisbury. |

| Your Question or Comment !! -: | I am the ggg-grandson of 1st Sgt Jonas Hartsell of the 57th NCV Co A. I just wanted to stop by the site and run a idea past you all. As you know the 57th NCV formed there on July 4th 1862. And I was wondering if there was going to be anything going on there as of July 4th 2012? If not there should be something special like a get together of the descendants of all who were at the Prison. Guards, prisoners whom ever. This will be the 150th Anniversary of the forming of the 57th NCV and Col Godwins move from over seer of the prison to commander of a unit. If there is something in the works please put me on a list so I can plan to be there, and if not pass this along to someone there who might want to make it happen. Thanks |

| Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: | ANSWER FOR ABBY FROM TENN. |
| Your Question or Comment !! -: | I think I have the right man, Lewis Millard Baird, but the spelling on Brown's lists are Beard. Appendix M-3, a list of political prisoners made on Feb. 17, 1863, shows: Beard, L. M., Campbell Co., Tn., farmer, arrested Nov. 1, 1862, for disloyalty. (death?) Appendix M-4 (Civilian Deaths)confirms the death: Beard, L., cit. of Tn., DOD May 11, 1864. Appendix V (all deaths in the prison)also has the same death listing. For this time frame in Salisbury history, his body should have been buried in a marked grave but Appendix U-2 which shows the individual graves carries no listing. |

| Your Question or Comment !! -: | There are no surviving files, if there were any originally, on individual soldiers at Salisbury Prison, just several lists in the appendices of Louis A. Brown's work, "The Salisbury Prison." Mr. Brown compiled his lists from several sources he located during his research. App. L-4 shows O'Meara, Tim, Capt., Tammany Regt., 20th NY, still being held as of June 2, 1862; no release date is given. |

| Your Question or Comment !! -: | From various sources on Pa. troops, I located Pvt. Stephen H. Dean, 116th Pa. Inf., Co. K. He enlisted Mar. 29, 1864, in Uniontown, Pa. at the age of 35. He was wounded and captured Aug. 25, 1864, at Ream's Station, Va. (siege of Petersburg). He is reported to have died Dec. 3, 1864, but the official burial records credit his death to Dec. 13, 1864. | Your Question or Comment !! -: | Brown's lists show a James Rogers, Pvt., Company E, 14th Ct. Reg., dying 12-7-64. If this is your man, in this time frame of Salisbury, he would have been buried in one of the trenches. If there is a tombstone in Ct. for him, it may be a "memorial" type marker, no body under it.
