as for being sorry for the owners, they didnt give a shit about that dog until the cameras where rolling. does anyone know who really owned the dog? i do and it wasnt anyone who claimed that they did!! the montell show was my favorite, robert whitemire you put on a hell of a show, didnt you just get out of prison right before that aired, hes a crack head.. hmm, wonder how robert got the video out of lances car, did anbody ask that? he broke into his car to steal everything. he found the tape thinking it was a porno. why dont all you people go down to your local dog pound and stand out there and tell them to stop burning dogs, or go and jump in front of some hunters bullet, or go look in your closet and let me know how many murdered animals it took to complete your coat and shoe collection. go have a steak or some fried chicken, maybe some lamb, just think you could be wearing or eating somebodies scruffy, should you be punished in the same manor? get a life!!!!! |

Instead of being so upset with what they did, maybe you should feel bad that they obviously had zero guidence in their lives as children or in their teenage years. Until you have walked in someone elses shoes you shouldn't judge them or what they have done in the past. At that age living where we lived, life was ruff & when you feel like noone cares trouble just seemed to follow you. Honestly if you want to get into biology, you're thinking way to far into it & have way to much time on your hands. Any one in there right minds will always save a human instead of an animal exspecially an infant. Very bad thing that happened but, in there defense there was alot more going on than just crime. Lost kids with no guidence in a big city. What does everyone really expect to happen? |

| Comments: | What I don't understand is why people seem to take it for granted that hurting an animal is less immoral than hurting a person. If you know anything about biology, then you know that the mechanism by which an animal feels pain is essentially the same as the mechanism by which a human feels pain. All life on Earth shares a common genetic ancestor--that is a fact--and that means every life form on Earth is related. We are literally family. We share a heritage with animals, and that heritage includes a presumably equal capacity for physical pain. There is no reason to believe that a dog being choked and burned and beaten processes the experience much differently than a three-year-old girl being choked and burned and beaten.
So I ask you: why is it worse to hurt a human than an animal? Is it because humans are more intelligent? If that's your reason, then I ask you to consider a couple of scenarios. The first involves a burning building. In one end is trapped a highly intelligent guide dog. In the other is trapped a severely retarded adult human who functions at the level of an infant. There's only time to save one--which do you choose? If you chose the human, then you have just admitted by implication that intelligence is not really the criterion you use to determine the worth of a life. What made you choose the human? The other scenario involves aliens landing on Earth. They are weaponless and defenseless but highly, highly intelligent; the dumbest of them is far smarter than the smartest human who ever lived. They disembark from their ship and inform us they are refugees from a now-dead planet. They peacefully seek a home here. Unfortunately, they carry an organism that inevitably causes death in people. We're faced with a choice: kill them and preserve ourselves, or submit to extinction so they can live. Once again, if you chose "save the humans", you've as much as admitted that intelligence is not really your basis for determining the worth of a life. Do you think there's a chance we favor humans simply because we happen to be human? Could it be just another kind of blind prejudice, another kind of "centrism"? I'm just asking. |

| Comments: | Lance, you completely miss the point. If someone has to TEACH you that it's wrong to torture innocent creatures, then you'll never really learn. Normal people--people with a conscience--are born with a disgust for cruelty. But about 3% of the population are sociopaths--those who can do anything at all without guilt. I firmly believe that 3% includes you. In these comments you've made here, and in your TV interviews, you sound like a soulless robot making a rather pathetic effort to imitate a real, feeling human. We should all feel lucky that at least you're not a particularly intelligent sociopath. You have the capacity to inflict great cruelty, but you lack the brains to convincingly feign remorse. At least your bullshit is easy to see through. Thank the Lord for small mercies, right?
Speaking of which, I find it painfully comical that both Lance and Scruffy's mourners invoke God for comfort, hope, and protection. Am I the only one who sees the irony here? That's the problem with appealing to God--the bad guys can do it just as easily as the good guys. If you, the decent people, choose to comfort yourselves by envisioning Scruffy in God's loving arms, then you must accept that Lance can use the God concept just as easily to excuse his own horrid self. It's a double-edged sword. I get frustrated when I see people dealing with atrocities by talking about God and heaven, because I think that sort of thinking has a tendency to induce complacency. Whether or not God exists, time spent soothing yourself with thoughts of another world is time that could have been spent fighting to change this one. |

They should be followed the rest of their lives and reminded how sick and putrid they are! Who gives birth to such vile beings anyway? Which one's mother is an elected official? They deserve the same torture that they inflicted on Scruffy. He didn't deserve to die like that. | Comments: | The horrific end of Scruffy haunts any halfway decent human being aware of it. To call the "humans" who tortured and killed this poor animal "animals" is unfair to animals.
Remember forever the names of the four rotten excuses for human beings responsible for this tragedy: Jose Gutierrez, Marcus Rodriguez, Richard Golubski, and Lance Arsenault. They are lucky to be living in a civilized society, for were it up to many of us, this writer included, they would have been tortured and executed exactly as they did Scruffy--preferably in a stadium, on national television. And I would have been glad to inflict the penalty upon them myself. As much as I oppose the death penalty, a part of me believes that if we are to have it, it should be applied evenhandedly for the most heinous of crimes. (In addition to severe or protacted animal abuse, I would also include certain cases of murder, battery, and child abuse among such crimes.) To do such things to them and their like might not be legal (and I do *not* actually advocate doing such things to *anyone, even them*), but it would be moral and just. Let these evil "men" roam the earth in disgrace. Let them never be allowed to change their names or outlive their infamy. As much as the law allows, let them feel every day and hour the full brunt of our and society's contempt and hatred. Let them live forever with the consequences of their actions. Let it be difficult, indeed, impossible, for them to find work or a place to live. Let them suffer and starve. Within the law, let's show them as much mercy as they showed Scruffy--which is to say none. As much as I support the Constitution's prohibition of ex post facto laws, a part of me thinks it a travesty that we can't retroactively increase the penalty for acts of these "men." Let Scruffy and other animals who have wrongly suffered at the hands of "humans" enjoy true peace. Animals like him make me hope, if not fully believe, that there truly is a "Rainbow Bridge." If so, I hope he's enjoying himself eternally with the likes of Sparkle, Pasado, Westy, the cats killed by Wisconsin's Barry Herbeck (another "person" who deserves far worse than he got--12 years in prison), and other animal victims of cruelty--as well as countless beloved pets who lived good and happy lives, including my last three Chihuahuas, all named Coco. Scruffy, we remember you and we love you. You deserved better. May you now have it for eternity. Scott Enk |

| Comments: | I just saw the Scruffy story on A&E this morning and all day I have been bothered by it. I have a 14 yr. old minature pinscher who has been with me since I was 15 and I honestly think that I would go crazy if some stupid young men did that to him just cause they were "bored". They took some comments from Lance Arsenault and I seriously wanted to throw something at my TV, I was just so disgusted. I know that there are worse things that go on in this world but to see an act like that being videotaped and hearing them laugh just made me sick. I hope their fellow inmates gave them what they deserved while they were in jail.
I know this went on a few years ago but I am just now hearing about it and I can't even imagine how you must've felt. Hopefully time has healed you. Thanks for creating this page so others can share their thoughts with you. |

One of the mothers of the butchers that tortured poor little denfensless Scruffy was on. What a pathetic excuse for a human being she is. She claimed over and over that Scruffy was "just a dog" and couldn't understand what all of the "fuss" was about. I think that mothers, fathers and adults who should know better teach their children such indifference to any life should be treated by the law as the monsters that actually did the acts. I hope that Scruffys Law in Kansas passes so that Criminals like the Scruffy Butchers go to jail for as long as possible [like 20 other states including Kansas' neighbor city/state Missouri.] I have to reintinerate my disgust at the mother on the show. She needs help, since she is unwilling to go that direction, I feel that see needs to have a shameful eye looked down on her in her community. Maybe if enough decent people show her what she is, she will seek the help she needs. So sorry about poor little Scruffys horrible death. Maybe Scruffys Law will help to prevent such sadists from doing this again. S. |

friend,Molly.She was a 9 year old dainty creature.A black & white mix between a border collie and pomerianian.A very intelligent,loving friend she was.She seen me/helped me through many troubles.Its been 5 years since she died as the result of a car accident.I was away at nursing school when I got the call that she had died.I left school that day and never returned.I miss her to this day ever so much.I tried last year to have another friend,but after 3 of having this new friend,I chose to give her up for adoption because it just wasnt the same.I buried Molly in a meadow that she use to love to play in.And one day,when I go to visit her grave Im going to try calling to her as you have said on your page.What a joy it would be if it she came.Thank you for sharing such a touching page with me |

| Comments: | Scruffy was such a cute dog. We had a 16 year old dog leave
us about 5 years ago. It is hard to lose a pet you have had for so long. We now have a bunch of cats ( Bengals ) and 2 Staffordshire Bull Terriers .....which sleep in our bed and spoiled rotton. We also lost about 7 mutt cats one by one. They were all 13 yrs and above. But life here is abound again. Scruffy has gone to the rainbow bridge and waiting for you. I do belive we will join our pets when we go through the window to the place where spirits dwell. I belive there is something else beyond the flesh..... and though our bodies may be dust and dirt .....we we're spirits first and will return home. I hope Scruffy didn't suffer. Ya know .... DOG is GOD spelled backwards .... and like god a dog loves us unconditionally and will forgive us of anything and be with us always if we let them and LIVE to do nothing more than please us. Man was so overjoyed with dog .... god then had to teach us humility ......and then gave us cats. I do not think cats have as much spirit as dogs do. They are so aloof and will not do anything you want them to. I have fed cats I could never touch. But ... I am one who can enjoy the fire without touching the flame. ENjoyed the website and will be back. |
