Comments:Greg Williams, what can I say, he was just a great loyal friend. I served with MN3 Williamss at DET 2, MN1 Williams at MMU12, and MN1 Williams at Ingleside when when he was a student getting ready to transfer to MMU8 Guam in 1997ish. Many fun memories at Det 2 on liberty and of course the duck pond on base. Those that were there can relate. At MMU12, I took many a trip with Gregg to the big city and at Ingleside, many weekends on the jet skis at Lake Corpus Christi, TX. A real character and I am sure is missed by many a folk.

So Long Shipmate!

Comments:I joined the Naval Reserve in Los Angeles in March,1951, two weeks after I turned 18. Boot Camp that summer at San Diego, the next summer I served on AMS Swan, minesweeper out of Long Beach. I decided that was the wrong end of the business.
Next summer I went to Yorktown for 8 weeks as an SA. We reservists were promised immediate promotion to MN3 after six months as MNSN. I reported for duty In June, 1954, as MNSN.

Within a week I was an MN3, sent to Hawthorne, NV,and taught electronics in the little school there. March, 1955, I was sent to Yokoska as an MN2. Served there for a year and a half, supervising the shop for repairing mine firing mechanism test sets, leaving for States in May, 1956, as MN1. I am in the front row fourth or fifth from the right side of the picture of the Azuma crew in April, 1956.
Went back to Nevada as a school teacher, later State Supervisor of Foreign Languages, then PhD at Ohio State.
Taught and served as Administrator at West Chester Univerity, returning to Japan in 1988 to set up a branch of that University in Fukuoka, Kyushu. Now living in Tennessee. Love to hear from Minemen of the era 1952-1960.

Alison and I spent some time with him in Charleston after he returned from Japan when I was going to C School. Greg was a great shipmate and a loyal friend and we were shocked and saddened to learn of his death as all of us are when one of our own passes.

Subject: UPDATED INFORMATION RE PASSING OF MNCS WILLIAMS

Fellow Leaders,

I have received many questions regarding the surviving family of a retired
shipmate who passed last Friday night. Here are the facts as I know them to
be and some things in process that Misawa Chiefs and others are doing to help.

MNCS Gregg Williams, USN Retired, served as the Senior Enlisted Leader of
MOMAU-12 here in Misawa until his retirement in 2007. He was a proactive and
robust member of the CPO Mess and was recognized by JANAFA in 2006 for his
contributions to the Japan/American alliance. Gregg was a long time resident
of Japan, spoke fluent Japanese, and although Gregg was divorced from his
Japanese wife, he remained in the Misawa area to be near his now 14 year old
son (Nick) and continue to be a part of his life. Gregg was working as a SOFA
sponsored government contractor for the US Army at the Shuriki facility here
in northern Japan. Gregg was involved in a single car accident, hitting a
bridge abutment on a dark country road going home after spending a week in
Misawa with his son. Gregg was pinned in the vehicle which caught fire and
was completely burned. Cause of death is pending autopsy and remains are
being identified through DNA testing sometime this week.

Between USAF, USN and the Retired Affairs Office here in Misawa, we will
figure out the who, what, and when of final arrangements for disposition of
remains, funeral, etc... I have a good team getting started on figuring out
what entitlements and assistance is available for his surviving son. The
time-line for translating Japanese official documents (death certificate,
police reports, etc..) and working them into the American system is unknown.
In the interim, I am specifically requesting monetary assistance for this
young man and his mother. Nicks' mother works as a cashier at Lawson's market
and their income level is low to start with
- now without child support, it is going to be more difficult.

Gregg had no other relatives and his 14 year old is the official
next-of-kin. Nick is a good kid who was very close to his Dad and is now
living the nightmare a lot of us have gone through in the sudden and
unexpected death of his Dad. Add to that the worries over how to make proper
arrangements and costs associated have both mother and son in a bad way.

I helped get Nick a black suit yesterday and it was one of the hardest
things I have ever done both as a father and as a son of a deceased father.
Nick attends the DODDS high school here on Misawa Air Base (20K tuition paid
by his Dad) and is a good student and well liked by his classmates - he is
taking this week off to be close to his mother. Nick still does not believe
it was his Dad in the car; his grieving is just starting.

I know I am rambling in this and should get to the point but I want you all to
'know' Gregg and Nick as a Navy Chiefs' family albeit a retired family.
Gregg did not opt for SBP for his son (we all know we are going to live a long
time and SBP is not always a good financial option). I do not know what, if
any, life insurance he carried following his retirement. I do know that Nick
will eventually receive assistance through the Social Security Administration
and perhaps other sources - I leave that up to the Retired and Decedent
Affairs experts. For now, and the foreseeable future, he needs help.

The Misawa CPO Mess has established a fund specifically for Nick Williams
under the title of "MNCS Williams Memorial Fund". This fund is run solely by
the base approved and chartered private organization of "Misawa Chief Petty
Officers' Association". Account is subject to audit and oversight by JAG and
Supply Corps officers. Our President and Treasurer will oversee all facets of
donation accounting as supervised by me. Every dollar and yen donated will go
to Nick in memory of his Dad from the Japan based Chiefs from the entire
region. I ask that any donations be collected and total amount sent by check
made out to "Misawa CPOA" with an annotation that this is for the "MNCS
Williams Memorial Fund". Every envelope I receive will only be opened in the
presence of all three persons responsible for the accounting. Command Mailing
address (using MPS) is:

My next duty assignment takes me to the pinnacle of the modern Mine Warfare Specialist: I will be advising 2 Admirals in mining, ASW, and MCM strategy, training, and planning--not bad for a country boy from Michigan. As a "bent-stick" Mineman, I think I've caught onto the Mineman "groove".

Prior to the first Gulf War, prior to the Korean War--and we can take the history back to the Revolutionary War--MIW has been less than sexy. It wasn't until the Gulf of Haiphong that they needed us--oh, and after the Samuel Roberts incident, et al.

I am going to a position where I will be listened to. I think I have a good balance of what it takes to be a modern Mine Warfare Specialist--Chief! Senior Chief! Get off the ships and come to a Mine Shop--you need to learn the other side of being a Mineman.

Just recently I typed YMS-477 in my browser and to my surprise, up came two pictures of the ship and one of the crew. My daddy is right there in the front row, shirtless, 2nd from left with his right arm resting on the chain. A man in a white shirt is immediately to his left. My father served on this little ship during 1944 and 1945 If anyone of you out there served on the YMS-477 I would appreciate hearing from you. I would like to know where YMS-477 went, what battles (if any) that it supported. My daddy died back in 1984 of lung cancer and I'm really sorry that I never asked him about his WWII service. He never talked about it anyway except sometimes about going on liberty with some of his friends. My fathers name was Glen Lee Hunt, Ser. No. 938-90-14 and he was from San Antonio, Texas.

Thanks to all of you for your service.
