The Donauschwaben are ethnic Germans that lived outside of Germany in the Slavic regions of Eastern Europe predominately along the Danube River. Franz's wife-my gr-mother was Margartha Logel. Her father was Johann Logel,and his granparents are Johann Logel and Barbara Braun, her parents were Jakob Braun and Elizabeth Dorner. Margaretha Logel's mother is Magdalena Grunzweig, whose parents are Josef Grunzweig and Anna Maria Schlett. Her parents are Franz Schlett and Walburga Muller. I would love any info on these ancestors or esp pictures of them and Schondorf 1800-1900, and info where these Swabians ancestors came from. Rumor was Margert branch was from Mainz & Alsace Lorraine area. A big question I have was were the Grunzweig families Jewish or part Jewish? I have a good pic of Magdelena Grunzweig/Logel/Mueller and her family AFTER her dau (my gr-ma) came to USA. The faces look like a mix of German, Turkish, Romanian, Jewish, and Asian! I know a tad about the history of that area, but I really want to know if the Donau Swabians intermarried ever ???!!! My grandparents settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Franz Margert's dad was born in Guttenbrun and lived in Schondorf. About 60 persons went down there in october 2007 to celebrate the reopening of the church after renovation. This renovation was mainly financed by donations from the expatriated in Germany. In 1951 she wanted to emigrate to Buffalo (where her aunt - a sister of her mother - lived), but then she met my grandfather - they fell in love and married - and so she stayed in Austria. Last summer she died and we are still griefing. I've got some old Photos of Schöndorf and her familiy and we are in contact with some Austrian and German Strengs. My father, Michael Huck (born 1908 in Schondor, died 1987 in Canada) was born to John Huck (born in 1882 in Schondorf, died in 1939 in Canada) and Elizabeth Dutmer (Born 1885 in Schondorf, died in 1971 in Canada). John and Elizabeth were married in 1905. John Huck was the son of Michael Huck and Theresa Herman. Elizabeth Dutmer was the daughter of Ignace Dutmer (who died in 1911 - not sure when he was born) and Elizabeth Klaus (born 1850, died 1941). Although my father passed away in 1987 at the age of 79 1/2, his older sister, Margaret Herman still lives in Niagara Falls Ontario. I would welcome any correspondence or information you may have!

My mother is born in Parabutsch, Voivodina, Yugoslavia, in 1923. Her name was Anna Haberbusch, her mother was Theresia, a born Schmidt. My Greatgrandmother had a Restaurant there. Today I had some free time and was searching after some informations of the city of Parabutsch in the net. I found the story of the Danube Swabians from Frank von Kerney. Many things he wrote I remember that my mother told me about. For example: you eat hungarian bred, so you must speak hungarian lenguage. The words from the church in Parabutsch Nicht mit dem Schwert, mit der Pflugschar erobert: Kinder des Friedens Helden der Arbeit” (Not with the sword, with the plowshare they conquered: these children of peace and heroes of toil) I Know very well. In Bad Schönborn near Heidelberg sattled a lot of the Parabutsch people. There is a monument that shows the words. I've been in Yugoslavia several times with my mother and sometimes I had the impression that some of the old citizens there who knew the "Danube Swabian Times" want them back because they lived very much better than today. |
