roadsign

A young brunette with old soul eyes wipes the counter in front of you and sets down a glass of water. The ice cubes chime like little bells. "So tell me. What's on your mind?"

We're broke. I've been out of work since last June and only started back three weeks ago. It's hard, and takes much of the fun out of wedding planning.
I'm on "LiveJournal" as "lurkingheretic", but even there I am quite private and don't post often.

Song on the old jukebox: Last Plane Out
Ah geez. Pink background. I guess the raindrop link needs
updated.

Hell, a lot of things need updated. Myles High (the sequel,
I think that's what I called it) is so far out of date. My
life has changed so much. I'm only hoping someone has
clicked the 'tell me of updates' link; otherwise I've just
got a glorified diary here.

Nothing wrong with that, I suppose. I just realized on the
drive home from work tonight how I've lost touch with my
family--the Gohmans, anyways. I promised myself I'd write a
note to Grandma Betty, but I know myself. Maybe I'd print
it out, maybe it would even find its way to nice stationary.
But stamped? Addressed? Mailed? I've gotten spoiled.
And yet she sends me cards every holiday. Got to do
something.

Just like I have to get the *right* set of
addresses--agents, not studios--to try to sell the
screenplay I wrote a year ago summer. So it goes.

But I'm in love. Very in love. Tonight I'm alone and while
it doesn't hurt me (kind of nice to breathe solitude for a
few hours) he is on my mind. As soon as I proofread a
resume for a student (just did it, where is my train of
thought?) I'm going to look up his family names. Just 'cos.
He's fascination--beautiful, devoted, hardworking, ethical,
dangerous...I've told him before I'm waiting for the
punchline, it's all too perfect. Yet I've seen shades of
darkness, "imperfections" if you will. Some of them make
him better for being there, some I just don't know. But I
sound like I'm appraising a car rather than describing the
man I love. It's my nature, I guess. I want to love
without question but am afraid to. I've gotten better. He
knows how it is, has seen this before, has felt this way
before, understands. Only gets a little frustrated at it.
And then some of what he describes as his past is just so
incredible, so completely out there, that, that, that...

Damn, it's like dating Remington Steele.

I'm so in love.

I have a screenplay I need to sell, a new job to look for
(even though right at the moment I'm okay with the one I
have, I know how quickly it could turn ugly. I mean, school
ain't so bad in September, but come March it's Hell. I need
a job I can leave at work, not feel any desire to hang
around an hour afterwards to work because there isn't time
on my shift. No more Sunday night lesson planning, not ever
if I can get off my duff about it.), what else? An
apartment to clean, a storage bin to clean, laundry to sort
(Anthony, bless him, is going to do the wash for me
tomorrow. He'll do his too, it works out well for both of
us. Just makes black and white socks a bear to keep in
pairs, and in the right drawers.), a Volkswagen tire to pump
and its car to clean, money to make to get both cars fixed
(at least the Honda will go places beyond a block or two),
friends to catch up with, nieces to spoil, creative writing
to indulge in, movies to catch...you know?

Well, an old friend in chat and another wants Cam gossip, so
I guess I'll get back on my little rollercoaster. Maybe go
walk in the night air and get my mail. Who knows? Maybe
make a date to go see the planes next month. One day he'll
have a Saturday off, and I can show him the one thing that
gets me outdoors on a sunny day.

A joke I found funny--the censor software at work had its
way with it, so the wording is restored, imperfectly, from
memory.

The Punker & the Old Man

A young punker gets on the crosstown bus. He's got spiked,
multi-colored hair that's green, purple, and orange. His
clothes are a tattered mix of rags, his legs are covered in
tattoos and he's without shoes. His face and ears are
riddled with pierced jewelry and his earrings are big,
bright feathers. He sits down in the only vacant seat,
directly across from an old man who just glares at him for
about ten miles.

Finally the punk gets self-conscious and spits at the old
man: "What 'er you starin' at, you old fart, didn't you
ever do anything wild when you were young?!"
Without missing a beat the old man replies: "Yeah. Back
when I was in the Navy I got real drunk in Singapore and
fucked a parrot. I was just wondering if maybe you was my
son."

Okay--to all the denizens of Jet City Message Board--I guess I lied. I explained most on a post there.
Briefly, my job has eaten my life. I get up at 5:20 a.m., get home around 7 p.m., and (silly me) have decided to keep my little Sunday retail gig. It's the only thing that keeps me sane, even as it takes precious, precious time. On my list of "to do"s is a reminder to fill out an application for a more standard school--for leverage, if nothing else.
I'm now working for a charter school, very unique, very progressive. OTOH, they demand a lot from their staff and are growing too fast IMHO. Feels like everyone's work is backlogged, and I've only been there a month.
Well, past my bedtime. The coffee's not cuttin' it, so I'll give a little wave to the guy behind the counter and crawl off to my little bed.

From my e-mail, a bit of news I wanted to share: Howdy!
Christopher Moore, author guy, here.
Just a note to let everyone know that my latest book, Island of the Sequined Love Nun is now out in paperback. (Avon Books) You should be able to find it at your local bookstore or at Amazon.com. (Link below.)
Currently I'm finishing up my latest book, tentatively titled Munching Wackos (Avon doesn't like the title). You can read about it (and other stuff) at my web page. (Links below.)
Happy Easter or Passover or whatever.
This is my first attempt to contact everyone who has written to me. Sorry about the spammage. I'm just learning this, so you may get it twice or not at all. Let me know. If I wasn't under this deadline this would be more personal.
Best,
Christopher Moore
