Comments:Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to all the Swiss players, their families and friends who looked after us on our trip to Switzerland last week. Also to my Band - well done - the playing was excellent and you accounted for yourselves well. I think everyone had a great time and were not ready to come home. To Daniel - forget being a lecturer - you were made to boogie as a "tour guide". Which vinyard was that again?????!!!!!
Also hi to Angelo Bearpark - it was an honour to have you play with us and we must arrange for you to come to England for a concert here.
Sorry some of our guys missed an excellent trip - especially Montreux which was a once in a lifetime experience. Thanks to everyone for being supportive, Vince for all his help and my present .....come in number 42 hehe!!! Maz x

A few of your members visited me at a recent trade stand to look at our new range of instruments.

I offered a trial at your band rehearsal and would like to know if you would still like to do this. If so, please could someone email or call richard@genevainstruments.com or 07825 730 318 with a rough idea of what you would like to trial. It's free to trial our products and I'm getting around many north east bands at present and It would be great to get to see you all.

Many Thanks and Good luck at the Areas.

Comments:I would just like to say thank you to the Band for my 40 years continuous service award received from the Band at Croxdale on 27th September. It just seems like yesterday when I joined the then Esh Colliery Band in 1968 to become only the second female in the ranks. It has been a very rewarding hobby and I have met many fabulous (and in some cases famous) people over the years. The band are like a second family sharing ups and downs, trials and tribulations, bad times and good times - they drive me bananas but I love them all dearly hehe!!

Also congratulations to Richard for his win in the Solo Competition - look out Dad & Nicola here he comes!!!!???

Comments:I was extremely shocked to hear the news of Ralph Bell's death. I had known Ralph for the last 40 years and was amazed at times at his sharp wit.His humourous comments, his ribald jokes and infectious laugh all served to make the practices and engagements go with a swing. He was a perfectionist, always striving to get his part right. He missed very few practices or engagements and will be missed at the learners section. I will miss a lot as will all of the Band - the practice is just not the same without him.
On Friday 24/8/07 everyone gathered at Durham Crematorium to pay their last respects to a man who had done so much in the Banding, dancing and bowls arenas. The place was packed. The Band played the cortege in with Ralph's favourtite hymn Gresford and they played again throughout the service How Great Thou Art and Love Divine. It was the most difficult performance I have ever had to do and I know that nearly all the Band were struggling to keep their emotions in check. We left Ralph with the Big Meeting march "The Middy".
Ralph's favourite piece was Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" - which was impossible to play without the percussion section as there was little room in the Crematorium. However, everyone returned to Quebec Village Hall where the Band gave an mini concert playing Angels,I Know Him So Well and of course Don't Stop Me Now. We even put out Ralph's chair in memory of him. Arlene (his wife)and the family thought the whole occasion had been a fitting tribute to Ralph - he would have been pleased and proud.
We miss him a lot and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time. Marion

Comments:We were all saddened by the news of Ralph's death, I have known Ralph since I was a small lad although in the banding world I only knew him for the last 9 years. He had asked me to arrange Londonderry Air as a Euphonium solo for him, I started it but never got to finish it. I told Michael Evans about this and he said I should still finish it for Ralph. Well Ralph, I have just finished it, and I hope it meets with your approval. Our thoughts go out to Arlene and the rest of Ralph’s Family.

Comments:To say we are all deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Ralph Bell is an understatement. If it wasn’t for Ralph’s commitment and dedication to this band there probably wouldn’t be a band today. He was also a loved and respected member of the bowling world and ran the dances at Quebec and will be sadly missed. On a personal level I will miss the friendship, humor and the unmistakable laugh I have come to know and love over the last forty years. Ralph’s playing in the band was always of the highest standard and if he had difficulty playing something you could guarantee it was practised at home until it was right. His work within the learners section in the band will also be greatly missed. Our thoughts go out to Arlene and the rest of Ralph’s Family.

Every band has a character and for Bearpark Ralph was it and he will be truly missed.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this very sad time.

Well played band, we know we played better than last and other bands above us did not, but, thats contesting for you. One mans opinion, even though he was very wrong on Sunday, I am not saying we should have won, but no way were we last. Funny how all the other areas have 2 in the box and the North of Engalnd only have one. Back to the real world of concerts now.

Many thanks also to all the sponsors and the audience who also made the night go with a swing!!!

Also thanks must go to the Band and the collectors on Saturday 15th October when we did our bit for the World Vision Brass Band Aid project - and collected £350.00 for the fund. Together with CD sales on the day this made a huge £500 in 2 hours for the project.A cheque will be presented to the fund at Stanhope Silver Band's practice hall on Monday 17th October. Steve Robson (Stanhope's BM) is "buzzing" over the success of the morning.
(Steve, we were pleased to do something to help your fundraising)

Two great concerts for two derserving charities - many thanks to all for your generosity.

A great sound and a particular mention to your conductor/sole solo cornet who did a great job on the fanfares at the end all by himself.

We were very surprised to find you in the 4th Section. Durham is a lovely city and we really enjoyed our weekend there. In fact we saw another band out on Sunday playing outside the cathedral. Beautiful weather helped - just a pity we didn't have time to hire a boat before the flight back to London.

Best wishes for the future.

My husband and I live in Essex and play for London bands (Alliance and Redbridge). We were in Durham this weekend for a friend's wedding and on Saturday morning while walking round the town we caught the tail end of your band outside the theatre. We thought you made a really good sound (despite not having a full band) - especially the middle of the band. The tuning was also spot on. We were very suprised to find out that you are not in a higher section - we had you down as at least 2nd, if not higher. Anyway, was nice to hear a band on our first (but hopefully not last) trip to such a pretty town - keep up the good work.
Megan.

Thanks to Jason for his hard work and patience. I would like to say that your deportment was amazing though you all thought it was highly amusing the points helped us get the BIG PRIZE!! Also congratulations to Michael - well done bro' you have waited along time for the recognition. I would also like to acknowledge the musicianship and camaraderie of Ripon Band who made us feel very welcome at the Ripon contest (congratulations on your second place)and also Durham Constabulary and Billingham Silver band on Sunday at the DLI.(Congratulations on your 1st and second positions). I don't think we should forget Marion in all these thank you's although she is my mother, if it wasn't for all her hard work organising the band we may not of got those big points for deportment.

I was a player with the band in 1974-76 (I think) Bill Partington was the conductor at the time and Raymond Evans was top man. Esh was my first band (age about 10) and the first band I did a stand up solo with at a job in Wolsingham I think. I have a recording of that concert if anybody is interested (c.1974) Could you add me to the old/ex players section. Enjoyed the website.

Comments:So the phantom profiterole/mince pie nicker is leaving us to go to pastures new!!! The jobs where food is involved will just never be the same again. We will miss you coming to terms with valves instead of slides - not to mention your mischievous sense of humour.
Seriously Doreen best wishes with your move North - we WILL miss you - just make sure you call in to see us on any return trips home!!!

Comments:Hoping rehearsal will go ahead tomorrow (wednesday) but not looking too great as been hit with snow here which appeared when I got back from band tonight... roads aren't good and they closed the M602 earlier today as well!!, so unless it's cleared up here (and up there of course) then it's a no goer... Self practise will be required! :-P

Fingers crossed though... :-)
