Comments:Hi Brummels people. Anyone have a phone # for Declan Mulligan? Trying to locate him and say hi. We had a group in the 80's named The Strangers and then Roundhouse. We played the Abbey Tavern when Dec had another gig...and he was a mentor to us...even produced our 45 single in '83.
We were always proud that the Beau Brummels were a SF band
and continue to love their 60's classics.

John Hjort...please drop a line. All the Best!

Comments:Since I first heard it when I was a boy I thought "They'll Make You Cry" was a unique and haunting ballad. Every word I heard rang true. However, in all the decades since I've never found the lyrics for this song, and try as I might I just can't figure out what's being said in several spots. Strange to be haunted by a song's lyrics when you can't recite them. Can anyone here tell me how I can get those lyrics? It's like an itch I can't scratch. Thanks.

Hi, Terry Thorn. Hope you are well. This is John Hjort. You knew me before the stage name! I can put you in touch with Declan, if you wish. I'm sure he'd enjoy hearing from you. He's living up around Petaluma now. Just spoke to him yesterday to break the above sad news to him.

Declan and I became good friends and he gave me the the Hohner 64 Chromonica that he used on the 1975 album.I will always cherish it and the memories of playing with Declan,Sal,and sometimes Ron Elliot in those years.I also met Ron Meager and John Peterson during that time which was especially cool because I was a big fan of the band when I was 15 in 1965. I'm glad to hear that Sal is still is still performing but I miss my friend Declan and hope he is doing well.

If we came in wearing goofy hats once in a while, you guys took them and wore them for a set. Made the girls curious about us and that did no harm at all! Thanks for all that. I worked for Gerry Naughton and Colm Brennan at Acacia Glass on Haight St. in those days.
Colm used to play drums for you guys on occasion if I remember right.
By the way, Colm could use some kind messages from his old friends. His grandson just got killed by the pit bull in SF. I'm sure this is old news but try to contact him if you know him.

Comments:I've been a fan from the very beginning of their career and always appreciated the songwriting talents of Ron Elliott and Sal Valentino. "Triangle" is my favorite album of all time, followed by "Beau Brummels vol 2." Love the song "Wolf" written by Elliott and superbly recorded by the Brummels off the 1975 album. Also love the flipside of "One Too Many Mornings," the rare and seldom heard, "She Reigns," written by Ellioptt/Durand with a great vocal by Valentino.
Can anyone help me with the lyrics to "Only Dreaming Now?"
Some of them I've never been able to figure out (since 1967 when it first came out) and would REALLY appreciate it if someone could write them for me. Thanks, this is a great site!

Golden Gate Showband, Samuel Pepy7s, Californians (Toured the British Isles) and when we returned to he states we formed Black Velvey Band. Comments:I've personally used Hohner's harmonicas for the most part in my lifetime. When I started playing the instrument in the '60s, Hohner was just about all there was, and a Marine Band was under $3.00. Through the years, I've played a few different brands, and have been generally satisfied with all I've encountered. I'm just not that fussy.

The groups out of England were an inspiration to play harmonica for Declan, particularly John Lennon. Dec LOVED The Beatles!

I, personally, was influenced by blues player Jimmy Reed, to begin with, then later James Cotton and Sonny Boy Williamson II.

Declan's playing style, to this day, really has no blues styling in it. He plays more in the style of Irish folk musicians, and the non-blues style that John Lennon played. Ron Meagher is more blues-influenced in the way he approaches the instrument.

Comments:Hi Jackson...another pesty harp question, if you don't mind. What make do you prefer? Most players tell me they play Hohner Marine Bands, Special 20s, etc., but one guy I know swears by his Lee Oskar...saying he can more easily change out the reed plates and customize his sound. It seems like he might be winning some converts around here. Do you have any favorites, or have I overstayed my welcome and need to leave you alone?

Comments:Jackson....Again, thank you for the great information. Harmonica wasn't a common instrument in early to mid 60s pop...Stevie Wonder, the early Stones, Dylan, and to a lesser extent the Beatles, being exceptions. So do you know why the Brummels decided to make it an important part of their work? Like I said before, their sound is all the more distinctive as a result, but it seemed to be a bit of stretch that few bands would have tried at the time.

Comments:In my last post, I meant to say that "you can't play blues satisfactorily, or multiple-note stuff" on a chromatic. I said "single-note", meaning to say "multiple-note".

When you blow out on a chromatic, it is melodic, but when you draw in a mouthful of notes, it is discordant.

Comments:When we were young, chromatics were available in C and G. You can, at least, special-order other keys now (Warners/Ted Templeman got Declan an E chromatic for "Tennessee Walker").

Chromatics are good for playing solo riff/single-note stuff, but you can't play blues satisfactorily, or single-note stuff, which is most everything in '60s-style pop music. I personally prefer diatonics, but having a chromatic around for certain things can't hurt you.

If you listen to Declan playing "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby" of the first album, you can hear Declan pushing the lever on his chromatic to get a trill. I remember Dec, at the Cow Palace in 1965, playing the middle solo 4-bars, and ending with a trill that was so discordant it shook the building. Blame it on youth!

Declan will tell you, that when he first started he didn't know anything about playing the draw-in blues style, that his style was derived from Irish-reel style playing, and John Lennon's style of play. When Meagher took up the instrument, He was shown how to play blues-style, and he incorporated it into the several songs that were recorded with him playing the harmonica.

Comments:When you say an ordinary B harp, do you mean a B diatonic? I play along to my Brummel CDs using my trusty C diatonic, staight harp style. It's ok, but kind of bland. I'm thinking about getting a chromatic to get more flexibility out of one instrument....do you think that's a good idea?

Comments:In working with both Mulligan and Meagher through the years, I found that their approach to the harmonica was quite different. Meagher actually knows how to play blues a little, though he's not really good at it. Declan plays Irish reels, and the like, and doesn't know much about drawing in, blues-style. "Laugh Laugh" was originally done with an opening chord of "A-minor". When the record was being produced. Tom Donahue/Sly Stone decided the song should be lowered a half-step, to "A-flat-minor".

Dec complained that this made the harmonica too hard to play. Dec says Donahue told him, "You're a professional; you'll adjust. Just do it, baby".

When we played the song though the 70s-80s-90s, we always played it the half-step higher (Declan's little protest to what he felt was an unnecessary key change).

"Laugh Laugh" was recorded with a "C" Chromatic harmonica, so playing it in "A" was easier to play - "A-flat" required using the lever, hence Dec's annoyance.

In the 90s, I played harmonica on the song, and we lowered it back to "A-flat", so Sal wouldn't have to strain so much, and I simply played it on an ordinary "B" harmonica.

"B" harmonicas weren't around (at least not readily available) in 1964, so the whole issue was an annoying memory for Declan Mulligan!

Comments:To Jackson....Thank you for your detailed answer regarding my harmonica question. In listening to the harp passages on the Brummel's songs, it's clear we're not listening to a Sonny Terry/Charlie Musselwhite caliber of player, but then again, the songs don't call for that. The softness and subtlety of the harp playing perfectly complements the pensive quality of their songs and help give the tunes their distinctive quality. Thanks again

Comments:HEY, FUZZY!!!!!! Long time, no see! Austria, ay? I was in Germany, in March and April. Remember Rob Griffith, the blond bass player that played for Mike Heintz, with Rick Mastrude and Peter Tucker? I visited and jammed with him in Aachen, and he's an exec with Roxio Software now. I can put you in touch with Dec, and Meagher, if you want. Just send me an e-mail.

For the rest of you, who probably don't know: Earl "Fuzzy" Dean is the brilliant guitar player who played with Declan Mulligan and Ron Meagher in the "BLACK VELVET BAND", post-Beau Brummels. They even toured together, as far as England/Ireland, as "Samuel Pepys", after Dec first left the Brummels. Along with Don Abbott on Drums, Fuzzy (lead guitar), Ron Meagher (rhythm guitar), and Declan (bass), the Black Velvets were the hottest club band in San Francisco in the late-'60s, until The Beau Brummels reunion caused this band to dissolve.

I got the opportunity to meet Fuzzy many times while working with the Dec Mulligan-Ron Elliott-Sal Valentino-led Beau Brummels in the late-'70s-'80s. Fuzzy was playing with Billy Murphy, at the time (ironically, Billy Murphy's dad, Bill Murphy Sr., was the lawyer who handled Declan's royalties suit against Tom Donahue, Beau Brummels, et al).

You're some guitar player, my man! I remember every time you sat in with us, you'd do your rockin' version of "Love The One You're With". Always brought the house down.

Hope your still playin' those hot licks, brother!

Comments:To Tim..........Declan Mulligan played harmonica on "Laugh Laugh", "They'll Make You Cry", "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby", and, as you could see in the movie, "Village Of The Giants", Dec's playing harmonica on "When It Comes To Your Love". When Declan first left the band, Ron Meagher took up the instrument, notable examples being, "Good Time Music", and "One Too Many Mornings". I remember seeing Sal pretending to play it on TV, while lip-synching to "You Tell Me Why", but I believe Meagher is probably playing it on the recording.

If you've heard the live CD of the original band reunion (recorded in Sacramento, Ca, in 1974), Meagher is also playing harmonica on "Laugh Laugh" and "You Tell Me Why" then (Declan had switched to bass, and Ron Meagher to guitar). Meagher was bounced during the recording of the 1975 Warner Brothers reunion album. On that album, Declan Mulligan is, once again, featured on chromatic harmonica, the song being "Tennessee Walker".

He also opened accounts faking Cass' name, Sal's, and mine, to spread this irresponsible nonsense. Cass ended up deleting all of that garbage. I just checked out the guestbook and my goodness! Where in the world are you guys coming out with all these crazy rumors about Ron Meagher of the Brummels being dead?! Looks like the "Paul McCartney is dead" rumor.

Comments:I heard talk of a Beau Brummels boxset back in October 2003. Did this ever get released, or is it still even in the works? Also, wasn't there supposed to be re-releases of Bradley's Barn and Triangle (besides the Collectors Choice versions) with extra tracks? Any info would be great, thanks!

Comments:Loved the Beau Brummels ever since my older brothers brought home the 45 "Just A Little" when I was 4 or 5 years old. Can still remember Wilma & Betty going wild over the "Beau Brummelstones" live at the "Hollyrock Bowl" as they sang "Laugh, Laugh". They will always be my favorite American answer to the Beatles.

Comments:Yes, I was a later-incarnation member. The last I spoke to Ron Elliott, he was being told that the CDs with the extra tracks were coming out early this year, but he had no specific information. From what I've been able to gather, The two albums are now out, without additional tracks, but I haven't, personally, focused any attention on this, lately.

Of the several non-original members who have performed in this band, I was, by far, the biggest fan of the band to ever work with them. I bought the first three 45s, and bought all of their albums when they came out (except for the '75 album, which I never saw in the stores, and I lived in San Francisco!), saw them twice in concert in the '60s, and knew all their names, voices, and recognised them when I saw them around San Francisco, though I was always a bit too awed to approach them. Declan Mulligan was my neighbor, in the '60s. Saw him all time, never spoke to him once.

It was an honor beyond description to play with these guys, and nobody could have appreciated it more than I did. Ron E, Ron M, and Declan, are amongst my closest personal friends. Sal and John, less so, because they've often lived out of our area, though I worked a lot with Sal, and he actually stayed in my place for awhile, on two separate occasions (John always aeemed to be in L.A., and something always came up to prevent him from performing full-time with The Brummels again, though he has really wanted to).

The live album is a curiosity, and it's interesting, in that there are songs on there that you can't find anywhere elsa, songs that were being introduced for consideration for the album you're expressing interest in. It also happens to feature the five original members together (the line-up didn't remain intact, as Ron Meagher was replaced during the sessions with Danny Leavitt, who , subsequently went on tour with the band to promote the '75 album).

The problem I had with the live album is that the drums are too far in the background. It was recorded with a Teac 4-track tape recorder (I remember it being a Teac, anyway), and the mix is imperfect. The album notes are also a bit inaccurate, But it shows the band with more energy than their later studio efforts reflect. I think it's worth it, but, then, I would, wouldn't I?

Comments:Thanks for the info! I'll definitely check it out. Is it true that TRIANGLE & BRADLEY'S BARN are being re-released with extra tracks? If so, what label & when, and will the extras be from the same time period as those 2 albums, hopefully? Also, if anyone wants to answer, is the LIVE CD worth buying? I'm definitely tempted. Please excuse my ignorance but, Jackson Hart, were you a later incarnation Brummel? I just looked on the 1975 album, but couldn't find your name. All My Best, Rob

Comments:The '75 album was released, a few years back, on Taxim, out of Germany, so it's not too easy to find. It show up on eBay, CDNow/Amazon.com, now and then. For example, there's a copy available on CDNow, for about $30. I copied-and-pasted the link here. Hope it works (I never know!). I've also seen all of the songs on Kazaa, if you want to try and download it off the net. I agree with you, it's a pretty low-key album, for a comeback album. We used to play "You Tell Me Why", "Wolf", "Goldrush", "Down To The Bottom", and "Gate Of Hearts", from this album, in our live performances, late '70s-thru-mid '90s, and actually took measures to "punch" those songs up a bit. "Gate Of Hearts" and "Wolf" were quite well-received. Of course, "You Tell Me Why" was a re-make of The Brummels' third chart-entry from 1965, on Autumn Records. Good luck in finding it.

I found the album a couple months ago and it's not their best work, but I'm strangely wanting to keep listening to it. It has a certain low-key pull to it. Please post a response, thanks.

Comments:To All Message Board/Site Visitors!

First, I would like to take a moment to say I am sorry to all members/fans of the Beau Brummels, who have been caused distress over the recent rumor of Ron Meagher’s thought to be death. As many of you know this is not true! Why and by who exactly these rumors were started, I do not know, nor do I really care to know. Because of the recent cruel, hurtful messages that have been posted by these pathetic souls, I have been forced to shut off the ‘visitor’ feature on the message board, as a visitor you may still view messages, but to post you will have to create a login name and password, I do this only in an attempt to stop these and any other rumors.

-I ask all visitors not to reply or even acknowledge these rumors anymore, if you are a true Beau Brummels fan. Please note also that my login name is ‘Cass’ I do not and will not post under any other name, as some would try to have you believe.

Let’s all get back to discussing our favorite band! Enjoy the music, and have FUN!

To those lurking, find another topic, another place and above all GET A LIFE!

And a Goodnight!

Comments:Truthfully, Ron does have a sense of humor about it, a lot more than I do. This bozo caused me a night of grief, because Ron is like a brother to me, and the time that I read it was a time I couldn't contact anyone. Elliott replied to an e-mail, then I talked to Meagher, but it was a horrid night for me, until I could find out the truth. Now this jerk has impersonated Cass, and me, on the website, to boot, continuing to play these games. It's ugly behavior. I think Cass' site deserves better!

Perhaps he thinks that sending a "joke" e-mail about someone's death is funny, but it really isn't. I received two copies of the same e-mail from this man a few days ago, and I wrote back asking for details. Haven't heard from him since. But, at least Ron Meagher is ALIVE, and hopefully has a sense of humor. I don't like to "inform" on people, but I was actually upset about the "news." I hope no one else was fooled like I was! Maybe this guy will stop spreading this rumor now.

Only a REAL lowlife would spread such a rumor. Ron, if you're out there reading, have a good laugh laugh, and a happy and peaceful holiday. You once wished me best wishes when you sighed my Beau Brummels reunion photo, so I wish YOU best wishes and a happy, LONG life!

They're going to go see the 3rd "Lord Of The Rings" film tomorrow together. And to whomever it was who started that rumour, thanks a lot for the sleepless night. Being in the Philippines, I'm a little remote from the guys these days. I would appreciate if you could forward this message you got to me.., so I can communicate the details to the two Rons, and to Declan, whose answering machine I called this morning and probably shook him up to.....on the main message board, I've included this news, and also a review of the new reissue, that Ron Elliott forwarded to me.

Comments:Hi Brummels fans. I just got a strange e-mail message earlier this evening, that Ron Meagher died today, under very tragic circumstances. I would like someone to please write in and confirm, because I'm not sure whether to believe this or not.

This is very sad news, if true. I had the great pleasure of meeting Ron at the last Beau Brummels reunion show, in front of the San Francisco City Hall in October of 2002 (I donated some of my pictures to the website, and there are a few of Ron, there). He was very warm, friendly, and really pleased that there were still a lot of people interested in the band.

I've met just two members of this great band - Ron and Sal Valentino, and both were kind enough to give me autographs, which I now treasure even more. I wrote to the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame the year I met these two men, and the Brummels STILL haven't been inducted. Whether or not this sad news about Ron is true, I am reminded that sometimes people are not honored for their work while they're alive and able to appreciate it. This is truly unfortunate.

If anyone has more info, please write in. I would like to find out how to pay my respects if this sad news is true.

I cant believe that 2 different people sent me the same emails about wondering where I am. I am alive and well but bummed out about Mike Smith of the Dave Clark 5. He just did his first tours over here since 1967. His son got killed after the first tour. He finished his second tour about 3 weeks ago and even did the bay area. Last week he fell at his house in Spain and is now in critical condition with spine injuries. What a year for him. But as I said, I am alive and well and just turned a spry 47 last week. Look for my pic on Mike Smith's Bits and Pieces website on his meet the fans section as I went to Connecticut in March. Glad to know I am cared about.
