I've left many notes here, one every year, all in memory of you, Ben. Like Josh said, you are still missed. So many familar places I visit every year and so many adventures that changed me in ways I didn't comprehend at the time. You left a mark in my life that I am just now coming to appreciate.

As always,

Thanks...

I dont know how often you two crazies (i'm refering to the twins) check this website now, but I thought I would see if I couldnt catch up with you some time.
I'll admit that I am completely responsible for loosing contact in the past three years. Or has it been longer? I'm sorry :( I think the last time we saw you was on your birthday.
Anyhoo, quite often I catch myself telling a story about one of our few trips or remembering silly things. Melanie printed up a couple of photos of our overnight trip to Mt. Adams, which has me wondering if you still have that hillarious video of the "Cave above the Cave!". We also came across a picture of the four of us hiking a trail on Mt. Rainier sitting on an extension bridge with both of you wearing the craziest yellow sunglasses! Good Memories...

So I hope either one of you, Jason or Josh, take a minute and drop me an email sometime soon. It would be nice to see you two. There is alot to catch up on. I've been living on the Olympic Peninsula near Port Townsend for the past two years, so i'm not far. Hope your both doing well.
My thoughts are with you.
Amy Lou.

November 9th is always a hard day to get through. I miss the old adventures and Ben's passion and energy for everything outdoors. He could get me to wake up at 1am, drive 5 hours one way, hike 30 miles in the rain, only to ski a few feet of dirty snow, and all of the time laughing and having a good time.

Again, another year has passed and so I make an annual visit here to leave a note like I have all other years on, this, the 3rd without a good friend.

I went back to my favorite mountain, Mount Adams, and climbed and skied a few routes in my quest to ski them all. It was magical, especially since I was alone for 3 days. Ben, I'm sure you were there. I know you wouldn't miss skiing that mountain if you could help it. 18 mtn goat happened upon me high on a glacier and I thought, this is what you would want to be if you were born again. I know I would.

Best wishes and, as always, rest in peace my friend.

I wandered into Ben's site via another paddling site a year or so ago, following it chronologically from his first post to last. Through either my often painfully obtuse nature or that the link I bookmarked does not tie into the current home page I was unaware until today that he had passed in 2003.

It is my very sincere hope that neither the family or friends of such a clearly unique individual will be insulted by a complete stranger bumbling in at such a late date, as I only "know" Ben through his written words.

Please accept my condolences as they are honest, and my heartfelt thanks in keeping this site running and functional. The cascades are an amazing place, I can only wish I had the opportunity to share them with such free spirit as his.

I was cruising the web tonight, just relaxing and doing a bit of looking around. But it is starting to feel like fall down here in Tahoe and as always I was thinking about winter and skiing, so it isn't surprising that I made my way to the site.

I still feel so lucky to have known and skied with Ben. He was an inspiration then and continues to be an inspiration now.

It really is amazing to look at all the reports. That guy was busy.

I missed a couple climbing days this week and think that Ben probably would not have made the same mistake. I suppose that most of us would have more fun and get more done in the mountains if we followed Ben's example. I will try to remember that for while. At least until the next time I stop by.

Much love to Ben, his family and his friends. Have fun out there.

Just wanted to say thanks for leaving Cascade Classics online for all of us who enjoy the site.

I never got to meet Ben, but I've come to know him through the vivid storytelling of the folks who shared his adventures.

I got a chance to visit the Grand Canyon Elwha this past summer, one of the most amazing trips I've ever done. I took a moment below Goblin's Gate in Ben's memory.

Please keep Cascade Classics online. There's great information that is of use to people following Ben into some of these incredible places, and the community just wouldn't be the same without this fantastic site. Ben's passion comes through loud and clear and is an inspiration to many of us.

Best wishes,

I remember the great times we had down at the climbing wall at Gymnastics Plus and all our trips down to Smith Rock.
Ben was a great motivation for me to keep climbing strong and always kept my spirits up. He was an amazing individual and will always be in my thoughts. God Bless his family and all who knew him.

I like to write once a year to say “hello”. This will be the third time that I have done so. It seems the years are passing fast, faster still until now it is time to do so again. Each time will come faster yet, and even still they never become easier.

This past year my adventure continued. I feel older and wiser. In fact I went on a journey that I know Ben would’ve been proud of. While crossing the Ptarmigan Traverse alone (http://cascadecrusades.org/cascadecrusades/hiking/ptarmigantraverse/pt2006/pt2006.htm), I remembered him especially during the kayak portion on my return journey to my car. On the Suiattle River we spent numerous days camping and fine tuning our river skills. Our antics were brought to my attention every time I passed a familiar beach or rock or rapid.

Thanks for the continued reminders of a youth that I can’t forget.

With regards,

Jason Hummel

Ohhhh Wow. . . I can feel a spirit and powerful sense of adventure radiating from the computer as I have spent way too much time relishing the words and video/photo images of Ben & Co. I wanted to let you all know that this website is inspirational and I appreciate you allowing me to explore. In my internet investigation of 'all things Kayak' I discovered the story of "Bryan Runs the Ohanapecosh!" in the Photo Album of BodyBoatBlade website. It was jaw dropping detail as Bryan tells the story of how Travis escapes the river without his boat and Ben goes down to retrieve it from under Table Rock. I was thrilled to be conncted to cascade classics and have even more stories of kayaking adventures but saddend to discover of Ben's death.
I have been touched by the words of hope included in this guest book. From soldiers in Baghdad to Jennifer's christmas eve message to Ben's parents sharing their grief, encouraging us all to live life to it's fullest, value the richness of life, and "when given the choice to sit it out or dance. . . DANCE".
I am taking this as a sign that yes, I should follow-up on my interest in Kayaking and just do it. What adventures are in store for me. . .
"Life is a tapestry - each day your paintbrush - you have all the colors of a sunrise - paint a beautyful picture of your life's adventures" Jason, Thanks for this . . . CC

It's been too long since I last visited the site. It is unfortunate that the reason I'm visiting now is to offer my condolences to the family of Carl Skoog. He apparently was killed recently while ski mountaineering in Argentina.

Winter is just around the corner and we need to remember that the best way to honor the deaths of our heros - Ben and Carl - is to learn from their deaths and prolong our own lives. I miss you Ben. And I miss Carl even though I never even met him. So let's ski smart so we don't have to miss too many more of us.

I'm going up to Baker this weekend to enjoy summer turns. This is always the best, and what I wait all year to enjoy; the easy, laidback butter-snow turns in a tee shirt and shorts, shades and sunscreen. Those memories are what keep me going back! Even though another year has passed, another summer nearly gone, I remember those adventures we set off on and while this years mistakes and challenges, accomplishments and failures have been journeyed without you (and will continue to be journeyed without you), we make the best decisions we can in your absence. Two journeys this year brought me back to Maude and the Mowich; they were two reminders of the danger and the weight of decisions. Thanks for the lessons, but for future reference, send me an e-mail :).

RIP, Ben

I was so sad to hear of Ben's passing, even more because I heard of it just recently. It's funny how even years later, as we move on and lose touch-- certain things sit with us. The way people treated us, stay with us.

Ben was such a gentle soul. Even if I tried I couldn't conjure up a bad thought of him. What I'll always remember is the amount of respect he treated those around him with. I admired him, and the way he viewed life.(Through photography and the way he treated his friends) He was truly a free spirit.

I am sorry for you loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers

jen,
Thank you for your beautiful writing in Ben’s guestbook. The guestbook has gotten quiet this last year, but every now and then we are again brought to tears by a new writing there, from an old or a new friend. As you have seen, Ben lived and captured our beautiful world in his short life and in his website. Ben had so many gifts, and paths to choose from. As a child and young man, he was encouraged by his friends and teachers toward art, music, photography, teaching, math and science, athletics and architecture. He chose a career in engineering, but his two real loves were outdoor adventure and art. Ben found both these in our beautiful Cascades, and he shared them with friends and on his website. From your writing, and from your website http://jennesis.com, we see that you are also an artist. We are moved that what Ben captured is so beautifully understood and expressed by your writing. Of the many things we could have written about Ben, in his memorial leaflet we simply said “He was Beautiful”. You have also seen that.
God bless you,

hello,

i am a stranger to you. the intimacies i have met here, should make me an intruder, but they do not. i have been invited in, a few days before christmas, after a year of my own losses, to this website of yours, maintained by your friends...

i was on a google search for krumholtz' and there you were. a chronicle of ben and co. in images of the most extraordinary beauty that i gasped and wept. your photography is intuitive and tender, loving and daring, explosive and serene. i wanted immediately to email you and tell you how it touched me.

so i explored your site further and read, among your own words, 'in memory of ben', and my own loss tumbled into yours, and i felt really, the presence of all you had seen that is here, the way your own eyes framed it in your camera lens, the way your friends framed you, your presence and your absence, at once.

i, will never be on a glacier. i do not have the balance nor the endurance. i am rapidly broken by the cold. i am a contemplative yoga woman, but outrageous beauty of the world, light and sun, shadow and the beauty of nature/life ignite me, exhilarate me.

in my mind, every breath of every creature, taken and then released again, dances in the air until it is blended with every other breath and taken again, and then again, until we are all alive with a single breath. alive in each other.
i look at the art of your eye. passion is born, but nurtured it erupts into life.

you made the mountain/glacier air your life breath, the life breath of your friends. you have walked out of that beauty with images so remarkable, that i, one small woman, would never have seen without your effort, your eye, your heart for your camera and your life, and i am touched.

i breathe in and out, and i thank you for adding so much to the world in a tiny span of years. i thank your friends and family for recognizing you and cherishing you enough to keep your sights alive here on the internet, for a googler in love with the beauty of the world.

it was two degrees last night. a fox ran in front of my car shortly after midnight as i made my way home. we looked at one another. stopped and turned again to gaze at each other. i wondered at the strength of this wild bit of the world, living in town. i blinked and the fox had slipped between shadows and was vanished to my eye... but only to my eye. the fox had gone on, as foxes go... but i had time to gasp in her breath in me, my breath in her...

i would never have seen this beauty of yours if you had not reached in over each step hard won, and carried your sight out with you.

joy, exhilaration, mercy, wonder, peace, gratitude, to you and all of yours,

and joy again,

jen

Ben,

One year has now passed since you died on the Elwha River. Our intense physical and emotional grief has mostly passed. Memories of you, and our sense of loss continue; you are constantly in our minds. Your death has also brought blessings. Each of your friends have shared personnel stories and memories of you. There are very few things as genuine and moving as when friends share their grief. Friends have helped us heal and are forever in our hearts. You still touch many lives. Some of your friends knew the Lord, some have met Him this year, some are still searching.

November 8 we returned to the Elwha River trail. We hiked to Goblin’s Gate. The forest was a beautiful cathedral with filtered sunlight and autumn leaves. As we stood at the rock entrance to Goblin’s Gate we felt the beauty and power of the river. We are so thankful that this place is protected in the Olympic National Park.

God’s creations are works in progress; your friends and the Elwha River.

Ben, we love you, miss you, and will see you again.

Another good season has ended. I'm sure it missed you. I know 'we' your friends did. As a matter emulating your passion, we did our best to make the most out of this past winter and spring. We continue to live the story you began. When I was standing on the rotten snow of Degenhardt, I remembered your grin and enthusiasm for the mountain and nature. For the challenge! Your expressions reminded me that I am here because I want to be. Look around. See. Appreciate! Nature is at birth our mother, at death, the reaper. Our paths crossed twice, on skis on the summit of Adams and mountain biking Devils Gulch. I check this site periodically to see what else has been skied and to get ideas for my next adventure. It is great to see others with such great passion for the sports that shape our lives and consume all our free time. I hope his passion for life will continue in the sprit of his friends, family and all who met him.

Well done. My reason for signing is in hopes of sharing your passion. I have experience and desire to do the things you do, but less courage in doing them alone. Perhaps you would consider a meeting this spring, on the hills of Alpental for a short venture to determine compatability? The potential of forming a network of like minded and capable skiers foremost on my agenda.

Sincerely, Michael

While climbing back up a hill after a nice ski down a backcountry slope, I paused because I was tired. I had been kicking steps into the foot and a half of snow, and didn't remember it being so taxing. But that's because Ben always broke trail. Like Chuck said, its just different. We miss you.

We are friends of Candace and John's at Shilshole marina--our boats are moored on the same dock. We have two sons, ages 30 and 33; Candace and I always would visit at the marina concerning our sons; being mothers of young men is sometimes difficult, knowing our sons are now men---but we still have the love and concern we have always had as the boys became men.

Our hearts go out to Candace and John for the loss of one of their beloved sons.

Our heart goes out to Troy knowing the vacancy he has in his heart with the loss of his brother.

I have tears in my eyes seeing the beautiful pictures Ben captured on their adventures in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Very few people have the sense of adventure for life Ben and Troy enjoyed. Very few siblings take the opportunity to be truly great friends as Ben and Troy were.

As I have told Candace, she has the comfort of having "God" in her life to understand this tragic accident and knowing her son, Ben, was living his life to the fullest when he encountered the challenging beauty of our great earth.

I love the poems people have sent to this guestbook. They are meaningful messages that help with the healing process of losing a loved one.

Our hearts go out to you Candace and John--we are always here for you to have a chat about "our" sons---only parents can understand the concern and love one has for their children. You have two sons, one on earth and one in our heavenly heaven as your guarding angel.

Troy, you have wonderful memories of the fantastic times you enjoyed with your "bro". Continue to enjoy life to the fullest and speak to your "bro" often---he will be listening.

Your "boating" friends, The Cluff's

Ben is to me, a large Rock, high on a mountain. A place where each of us could cling to and depend on when we were not sure the route was possible. His passing has left a hole. A crater that our tears of Joy at his Living, tears of Grief at his Passing, combined with the melting snow of spring, will fill to form the most beautiful high alpine lake. A place to which we can climb in the mountains of our memories, as a tribute and honor to Ben. Until next time. Ben... We all love and admire you.

It is a great loss to not have Ben with us any longer. I never met the man other than a quick hi while rock climbing last year. He was busy looking at a difficult rock climb..

The passion Ben had and for adventure was obviously admired by many including myself. God rest his soul.

I never skied or climbed with him or any others contributing to this website. Mainly because they would find it a bore to ski with someone at my skill level. But that doesn't matter as far as my respect for the adventure found here by Ben and his friends.

I wish Ben a peaceful journey to his resting place in heaven and my best wishes to friends and family.

I am in hopes that someone close to Ben will write a report to the Alpine Journal so others like myself that never really knew him can also have a reminder of him and his significant journeys in his short life.

Candace, I and Troy are so thankful to be Ben’s parents and brother, and so grateful for you who helped raise and influence Ben. In his childhood Ben would often come running to us in delight to show something he made or accomplished, saying “what me did”. This precious childhood expression still replays in our minds as we consider Ben’s adult life.
William O Douglas has captured the essence of Ben’s spirit in his book, Of Men and Mountains :
“ I learned early that the richness of life is found in adventures.
When man ventures into the wilderness, climbs the ridges, he comes into close communion with his Creator. He becomes meek and humble before the Lord that made Heaven and Earth.
Thoughts tumbled through my mind during 30 minutes spent on top of Mt Adams. As I stood in a fierce gale, the first words of the Bible came to my lips: “ In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” This, I thought, is the beginning, . . .nothing but sand, pumice, lava, inert matter, no plant or animal. With this inert matter the Creator fashioned all that lives, moves, breathes.
One cannot reach the crags, look down on eternal glaciers without deep spiritual experience. If ever a doubter, he will come down a believer. He will have faith. He will know there is a God, otherwise the mind cannot comprehend how life could have been created.”
In his life Ben loved adventure and journeyed with God and friends in many beautiful places. Places most people will never go and can only begin to imagine. Places that are as created. The highest Cascade peaks, alpine meadows, old growth forests, rivers cut through rock to the sea. These were the places Ben loved. These were the places that Ben often went to be alone with God, and places shared with Troy and his friends. I pray these places will always remain as created.
At his memorial close friends reminded me that Ben was so much more than can ever be described. For that we have been given the ability to love and remember Ben in our hearts. This love and memory go beyond any possible expression and now help sustain us.
In this guest book Randy wished Ben God’s speed in his final ascent. Thank you Randy for this assurance. It is our continuing prayer that Ben’s friends will each be led to Jesus, and in God’s time we will each make our final ascent, and be together again in Heaven.
Thank you dear God, and friends, for our beautiful Ben.
John

The memorial service was beautiful and gave time for reflection. Forty years ago I was 24 with most of my life in front of me. In the army I had seen many of the Alps in Europe, but my home was near our Cascades. One time I thought my motto was "Climb every mountain", but I climbed them more as a working logger than for a hobby. I have found life to be beautiful and good when Jesus is there. I look forward to taking my last hike when Ben and I can both have healthy bodies. We will have a lot to talk about and we won't have to rush back to work.

Ben's premature death is a tragic loss for all who knew him. To all that knew him, though, Ben now stands as a powerful reminder of how well a life can be lived, and shared, with friends. That's a powerful legacy to leave for one so young, and should inspire us all to make the most of the time that is given to us. I only know Ben through his parents, website, and memorial. I'm sure he would want his family and friends to remember that you were important to him, and a piece of each of you, was always with him in his journeys. Thank you, Ben.

We had adventures; we had journeys into the classics. We were weekend warriors! You were the leader and you fell bravely. We will have more adventures, there will be more classics, and we will continue to fight the good fight. Watch our backs, protect our flanks, and give us stealth in time of need. We will miss you always and we will rejoice the life you lived! And know this; I appreciated the opportunity to get to know you. Until my day of reckoning, farewell, and…save a few rivers and mountains for me, eh? The classics will never be the same until then. Goodbye until hello.

I signed this guestbook five days after halloween, which was the first time I had hung out with Ben since our good friend Andrew Freed got married about two years ago. He invited me over to his place made me laugh, shared with me what he had been up to since then, gave me advice on what to do with my degree and we made plans for the winter. This has been an incredible shock.
In reading what everyone has written since then I am happy to see what an impact Ben made in the few years since high school. I probably never would have guessed, but neither am I suprised. Some people make their presence known by being loud and obnoxious, and a few like Ben make it without saying a word and letting his actions and accomplishments do the talking.

To Ben,
A lot of things remind me of you and someday I will be smiling instead of crying when I think about them, Mazda B2000s for example. You are an inspiration to me and a true friend. You will be with me whenever I can make it past the city limits. I miss you already, I love you Ben,

I had the privilege of meeting Ben almost two years ago, when he started working at PSE with my husband Jeff. Soon Jeff was hiking and skiing with Ben, something Jeff loved to do. Ben was very quiet, caring and fun to be around! Ben was so active, there wasn't a weekend that went by where I said, I wonder what been is climbing, skiing, or kayaking today? It is hard to say goodbye to Ben. We are lucky enough to have many pictures Ben took for us. We will never forget how you took Jeff on so many hikes with you, and how you loved to water ski at top speed and did it with such excitement! We love you Ben, and you are missed so much!

Ben was a student in my photo class at Davis H.S. in Yakima.
As a young man he was already everything I wanted to be as an old teacher: gentle, humorous, curious, observant, intelligent, talented.

Ben's spirit brightens my classroom and lives in the beauty of the world he photographed. I share in that spirit when I'm "out there" with my camera and the light and the wind. I will remember Ben.

Its been about a week now and the reality of this terrible tragedy is beginning to set in.

As someone fortunate enough to know Ben and spend a great deal of time with him in the mountains, Ben's untimely passing is nothing less than devastating. Ben unquenchable thirst for life and the selflessness with which he shared his passions were qualities instantly admired by those who knew him.

As we all mourn for Ben, my heart especially goes out to John, Candace, and Troy Manfredi as they struggle through these difficult times.

To me, the following words by poet Mary Anne Radmacher encompass Ben's life philosophy:

Live with intention
Walk to the edge
Listen hard
Practice wellness
Play with abandon
Laugh
Choose with no regret
Continue to learn
Appreciate your friends
Do what you love
Live as if this is all there is.

We'll miss you Ben.

A week ago today Ben went to be with Jesus. I want to thank each of you for your precious words, thoughts and prayers. As we get to know and hear about Ben's friends we are overwhelmed. We had no idea how special you are and know without a doubt that you meant a lot to Ben. No wonder he loved what he was doing. Only you would understand that passion he had.

When Ben climbed he made sure he held onto solid rock. When Ben died his friends placed him on a solid rock in the river which was his refuge until his body could be rescued. The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ is our Rock and refuge. Now Ben's family is clinging to the Rock and taking refuge in Jesus. Ben, he's organizing adventures in heaven.

We are having a memorial for Ben, November 22 at 11:00 in Yakima at Keith and Keith, Terrace Heights. Follow highway 97 and take Exit 33 to Terrace Heithts, across the river and another mile or so. A fellowship will follow so we can see old friends and get to know new ones. We want to meet all of Ben's friends.

One of Ben's favorite songs was "i hope you dance", by Leeann Womack. I know Ben would want each one of you to live your life to the fullest. You go and climb the mountains and kakak the rivers Ben didn't get to. These places are as God created them, so please give thanks for each mountain and river. And never forget that you are His greatest creation.

Thank you again for your condolences and for being Ben's friend.
God Bless you.

I only boated with Ben twice (on the easy stuff).

The first time I was instantly impressed with the fact that he and Josh were psyched on boating even though they did not have the latest gear(Josh was using a skiing helmet and leather work gloves)and they were not obsessing on perfecting the latest playboating moves (Ben was not even attempting to cartwheel his Phat). These guys clearly had their priorities in order. That first day Josh told me about Cascade Classics and I have been hooked on the stories and Ben's photos(and the cool quotes on the edge of the front page photo)ever since.

To me Ben stands for the most beautiful places and the highest of adventure in the Pacific Northwest. His photos remind me on an almost daily basis that we live in paradise.

Even if there were nothing more, Ben is obviously still very much alive in the hearts and minds of his family, friends and the many others he has inspired. I know that Ben's friends are going to help Ben continue his inspirational work by keeping Cascade Classics alive. As a true Cascade Classics fan, I applaud the Idea! I have a feeling(in part because my 17 month old son loves Ben's photos)that Ben will continue to inspire for many years to come.

May Ben find eternal peace and adventure

My deepest sympathy to his family and friends

at this point, ben's death still seams surreal. the emotions come and go and i'm not sure how to respond.

i am sure however that ben inspired every person who shared his love for adventure. i was lucky enough to spend a great deal of time in mountains with ben (like so many others, he introduced me) and i can attest to the fact that no one was better. no one was stronger, more determined, or more impressive. at 24 he was possibly the most active and progressive ski mountaineer in the cascades. at 30 he could have been one of the best anywhere. his death is a terrible tragedy, but his life will inspire people for years to come.

my heart goes out to ben's brother troy, his parents, and everyone else who knew him or simply wished that they did.

I wanted to send all that love and support back to Ben, his family, freinds, and those who were on the Elwha with him. This is a huge loss to the paddling community and the world. Ben was an amazing freind, paddler, and person. I send my love as far as it can possible go! Thanks for all your passion Ben. It was contagious and I hope it continues to be.

...The Pain that many are feeling right now due to the loss of an outstanding outdoors-man....was delivered to me through Cameron.. he told me stories that i wish could be made a reality again..and how skiing would never be the same....No one will be able to feel the spot that he has left.. I feel bad, and to all of the people closest to him... and those who truly know him...will he forever live on in all of our hearts... {BuG}

Ben, I feel that we knew each other for only a sliver of time, and while I wish we could have kayaked, climbed, and skied together for the rest of our lives, I am without regret for having shared with you the enjoyment of doing the things we love, if even for such a tragically short time.

Each of us never felt more alive than when we were with you. You touched a part of us that helped us make our dreams come true and for that we are incredibly grateful, and incredibly saddened by the prospect of having lost our greatest inspiration.

The first time I climbed with Ben he asked me if I was bringing my snowboard. I had given up snowboarding in exchange for kayaking four years ago, and never ridden since. But the signs suggested the first fresh snow of the season high on Mt. Baker so the answer was obvious. What better way to pick it up again than to experience my first summit "ski" in the tracks of the best ski mountaineer on the West Coast? (the country? the world?) His inspiration were my wings and I had the best day of riding in my life.

Thank you Ben for helping us all believe in ourselves, and for showing us what may be accomplished when one's mind allows the spirit to guide.

I will never forget.

I have had the pleasure to paddle with Ben on several Ohane trips. I have seen Ben "clean the line" and style the shot! I have also seen him instill confidence in others and keep a watchfull eye for us all as we negotiate obstacles. Ben was truly inspiring the confidence, skill, and care that he took was reassuring. He had always done his homework.

Ben has often been the topic of conversation between those who had the pleasure of being with him on various adventures. The conclusion of all those conversations would have dictated that Ben with his skill, confidence, and care would have been the last one standing.

With my all of my love for his family, friends, and to those who have read about him in this great forum of his life my heart goes out. He will be missed however not forgotton.

Truly a tragic loss. My deepest sympathies go out to his friends and family.

As a fellow ski mountaineer, Ben’s accomplishments were truly inspirational & amazing. He set the bar high by descending routes that perhaps only a select few would dream of, but even fewer yet would pursue. He was a true testament to great physical and mental conditioning.

Although we corresponded several times, I am disappointed by the fact that I never got to ski with Ben. Reading his trip reports certainly have aspired me to seek much more from this great sport and to explore outside of the norm – to that Ben, I thank you. To be good friends with one of his “partners in crime” makes his passing that much more personal. Perhaps this good friend (Sky Sjue) says it best on his website – "An amazing person". My deepest condolences go out to all of his friends and family. Benman – you will be missed.

It is a huge loss to the paddling and the outdoor community. I thoroughly enjoyed pouring through his many trip reports and photos. He certainly lived life to the fullest. I very recently lost my father to a swimming accident, but the comfort was he died doing what he loved. The same can be said for Ben.

Simply an amazing site. There's an elegant simplicity here that speaks for itself, louder than any hype and BS. No ceiling, no measuring stick, just busting wide open the thin line along the edge of disaster. Or maybe you're just outdoors too much to have time to get fancy.

Ben we once ran the MF Nooksack. I see you guys finally got down to the White Salmon. The EF Lewis and Canyon Creek are also worthwhile, although not quite as gnarly.

I spent the last 7 months in Ecuador and now I'm back in Bellingham enjoying the summer. I just read your pages on North Twin Sister and I had to drag my old bike out of the garage. This is a very inspiring site.

If you're ever bored I suggest heading up to Galbraith Mountain (between Lake Padden and Lake Whatcom) for some serious mountain biking or Larrabee State Park for climbing. I am without a creeker right now, but I'm up for mountain or rock climbing if you ever find yourself without a plan.

Well, I now hold the dubious honor of being the first member of the CusterBattle BIAP (Baghdad International Airport) project to be directly fired upon by hostile Iraqis. One of the posts we man is one of the main entry points into the compound which is surrounded by military units. We do also take some rocket and mortar fire, but it is often ineffective and seems to be preplotted by the contractors who place the porta johns around the main terminal. So far they haven't hit anything with a rocket. Last night there was an American and one Iraqi killed fighting inside the BIAP perimeter.

The post (checkpoint 1) I was manning today takes in all contractors and non military personnel as well as most of the military traffic into the complex. This road goes up to the terminal and the main airport and many points therein. The post is manned by 1-3 Americans and 6 Nepalis. All the Nepalis are former British Army, often referred to as "Ghurkas". I worked with some of them in Qatar also and all the fame that proceeds them is well deserved. They are hard working industrious guys who never complain about anything.

There is one post on this checkpoint (checkpoint 2) that could be referred to as "point". It is responsible to funnel all traffic into various lanes where they are then searched for explosives, weapons, contraband, etc. Both the vehicle and the individuals are searched there. Adjacent to these lanes is an old french village built right next to the airport to house airport workers. This area, although bombed out from April's fighting, is still being used as housing by the Iraqi's. A high stone wall, and palm trees line the road on both sides. On the other side is 1st Armored Division area. If you follow the road out you will pass under the overpass where at least one American has been killed recently by Iraqi's dropping grenades into open topped vehicles and also where an IED was exploded under a contractors tires. Let's just say that this area is an active combat site. A little surreal from time to time, but nonetheless an active shooting area.

We are backed up by a Scout Bradley platoon and several dismounted individuals who censor military traffic. We are armed with M4 rifles, Glock 17 9mm's, and wear body armor with a protective plate in the chest. We can draw and wear Kevlar if we want, but with temps nearing 125 everyday I prefer to wear a boonie hat and shades. Today we received good intelligence that a 10 man element would conduct an assault on this position with small arms fire and RPG's. I came down to the position after receiving this intelligence and went out to back up the Nepali who usually mans the lonely spearhead known as point. They rotate every hour, but being the American, I felt like it was my duty to facilitate from the front.

We had been actively observing a large amount of foot traffic heading into the woodline to our 12 O'clock for several hours and also a small group of 12-14 year old boys searching for something in the woods adjacent to our checkpoint. I had called these in several times and the Bradley's conducted scans from their barricaded defilades reporting nothing in return. I briefed each and every one of the Nepali's as to what our actions would be if we were to come under fire, that action being to return fire and bound back individually covering each other. The Nepali I was with was very alert and we took turns with the bino's scanning.

I was on the radio reporting suspicious activity to my 12 O'clock when we began to take fire from the 1 oclock position. It happened very fast at that point as the crack of rifle erupted to our one oclock and at a range of about 100 meters. Both the Nepali and I ducked behind the concrete jersey barrier, and I said to the Bradley's " I KNOW you heard that". I then started the Nepali moving down the cover of the jersey barrier without bothering to return fire. I knew we were somewhat in the Bradley's line of fire and felt like we needed to get out of the way ASAP. Sure enough the Bradley commander came online and started to tell us to get out his field of fire. We egressed to a point behind another barrier along with the other Nepali's and the other American's on the scene and took cover. Nothing else really happened at that point as the perpetrators decided to haul ass. We abandoned checkpoint 2 and took up positions closer to the Army platoon. A few minutes of notoriety and that's about it. Tomorrow will be more of the same. I'll get some pictures out to you soon.

Well, that was about it. Pretty uneventful overall, but hey. We got shot at. Day 4 in Baghdad for me. Now they are fighting at the same checkpoint I was at earlier and I may have to go back up there for the QRF mission.
