| Comments: | I'm looking for information on the Happy Camp carousel.
Possibly as far back a 1920. Did Happy Camp ever have a carousel? I've supposedly acquired a carousel horse from the Happy Camp carousel - where it last operated. All a bit of a mystery to me. Thanks for any information you can provide |

| Comments: | Thanks so much for the website and the work. My grandmother (born about 1898) and her siblings were from Happy Camp. Her three brothers lived in Happy Camp for most of their lives, I believe passing away in the 70s (I am not looking at the history as I write). My Great Grandfather's name was George Crumpton. Any information you have on the Crumptons would be greatly appreciated.
Also, there was a family story that my great uncles were on the "indian lists" in the bars in the area, supposedly to prevent them from drinking (that propably would have been just after prohibition ended). But I am not sure that these lists ever existed and whether or not one of my ancesters was a Karok (if so, I am thinking it is a "Mary Thorpe"). It is most likely a story told by my grandmother or great aunt about their brother's back home in Happy Camp. Any thoughts or connections on this would be helpful. |

Thank you/yootva for hosting this site. My Grandmother taught school here in the teens, and was an inmate at Chemawa indian boarding school. she worked in the laundry and lost her hand to a machine there, she was 12. The town was looking pretty grim for the first 10 years when I moved here, but it is beginning to come around a bit. There are a few new businesses, and people are starting to care about how things look again. We actually have two art galleries now, and the same great pizza! An organization called the Fire Safe Council is clearing land to keep us safe from forest fires, unless the greenies stop that too! The forest service spends a lot on fighting fires and not enough on making communities fire safe. Let it burn! |

| Comments: | I stayed in Happy Camp about 7 months in 1953. Gertrude Steingrant was visiting San Francisco, and went to the same church. Somehow my folks arranged a vacation for me for the summer in HC and I stayed for the school term. One room, 1st thru 8th grades. We lived across the river, downriver just past Elk Creek. The first house. On the right.
Gertude was a very good and very successful artist, who painted pictures of nature and I would watch her. One painting I remember well was of two indian maidens bathing in a clear pond in the forest. I believe Gertrude was Karuk also. I remember the 2 mile walks to school with another kid about my age every school day. I remember the fishing, the wilderness hiking (the road at that time ended 3 houses down and we were in the forest. I remember swimming the icy waters in the swimming holes of Elk and Clear Creeks. Wow!! Makes me want to come visit. And I will. This summer, in June, when Phoenix gets unbearable. 115 degrees. With smog. Traffic you wouldn't believe. I want out of here! Maybe my wife will let us move. Who knows? An ex-short term visitor who has thought many times of moving for good to Happy Camp. Don From Arizona |

| Comments: | In 1900 my grandfather, Paul Sharpegger, and his father came to Happy Camp. From the history on your site, I can't figure out what they might have come for. They were German immigrants in NY, bookkeepers. As a child I think we were told they came because of the Gold Rush, but the timing is not right for that. By 1902 they had moved on to Yreka. Any ideas on what was happening in Happy Camp in 1900 that could have drawn "white collar" German immigrants? |

| Comments: | I found this site just looking for information on Happy Camp and any photos to show my children. I've really enjoyed reading all informnation I have been able to find. I too lived in HC in my teen years with my father. He is Karuk and lives in HC, I've not seen my father for many years and wish someday that I may see him again. My two daughters really know nothing about their indian heritage and I'm not really able to tell them anything either. So if anyone knows anything about the Myers family from HC please feel free to contact me and share your information.
My fathers name is Dwayne Myers and lives almost diagonally across the creek from the highschool. Hermanett Albers is my cousin also and I talk to her every once in a while. Matter of fact the last time she was in Tenn. for indian conference I went to visit with her for a few days. Well like I said if you may have information and/or photos so I may show my girls something about where some of their heritage comes from it would greatly be appreciated. | Comments: | I am a Karuk living in the Bay Area. My great-grandparents on my mom's side were Nicholas & Effie Effman. My mom, Athena, lived in Happy Camp for some years & attended school in Orleans.
Being a Marine brat & then in the service myself I had few chances to visit Happy Camp. But my family was able to spend summers there back in the late 40's & early 50's. My grandmother's aunt - Dora Baker - owned the old hotel then along with her husband Ike. We would go down to the Klamath to swim & also visit some of my cousins in the area. Some of the things I remember about our summers there: The old wooden sidewalks in town were so cool. My parents always talked about the heat, but as a kid, it didn't bother me nor my brother. The trip down from Yreka was an adventure. Logging trucks everywhere. Now that I've retired, I hope to make a trip to Yreka & Happy Camp. Ron |

| Comments: | I have lived in Happy Camp For about two years. Due To some misunderstatements about my family and the crooks in the tow, we moved. We had a graet time in Happy Camp meeting all the people and becoming grate acquaintances with about everyone in the town. HAppy Camp is soon becoming a ghost town because of the stupid spotted owl that they are trying to save. Something everyone has forgotten is that and owl will move if its home/tree has been cut down. There are millions of trees in the Serria Nevads and it is hurting the area by not cuting down access trees. When the mill closed down thousdnads of people lost there jobs to a little bird, something I find rather pathetic. We miss our friends in Happy Camp and will visit for short periods of time, but we love our new home in Washington and are going to continue to stay.

| Comments: | cheers = skull
in these languages: The Danish, Norwegian, Swedish (skĺl) and Icelandic (skál) drinking toast has a rather macabre background; it originally meant skull. The word has come down from a custom practiced by the warlike and terrorist Vikings who used the dried-out skulls of their enemies as drinking mugs, with the evident advantage that the mug held a large quantity of mead and could be easily replaced. The viking influence on todays Scandinavian language, and in particular mentioned the danish etc word for "cheers" (skal) came from olden day slaying of people and the associated use of the top of the skull as a drinking vessel. ..Sweden was silently pursuing principles of racial purity. During those 41 years, some 60,000 Swedes were sterilized as misfits who did not meet the ideal of the blond, blue-eyed, stupid Scandinavian. ..the Swedish government has the nationalistic ideology called 'Nordism' which teaches the Swedes to hate Finnish language and its speakers, ordinary Finns. Hate crimes to come by this EU government? ..firms located in Sweden supported the Nazis' financial and industrial leadership. ..Sweden's crucial role in supplying Nazi Germany iron ore and military facilities. These massive deliveries of iron ore and military facilities from Sweden to Nazi Germany lengthened World War II. Casualties of the war have been estimated at 20 million killed in Europe. How many of them died due to Sweden's material support to Nazi Germany, is not known. ..the Swedes executed at least 460 Finns in the spring 1918. www.suomalaisuudenliitto.fi/case.htm |

Should anyone be inclined to help with research, I'd greatly appreciate it. My first job out of Auburn University was at Ti Bar Station (1960), then later out of Happy Camp (1961). I am a retired Forester from the U.S. Forest Service and remember Happy Camp as it was during the "hey-days" of logging, i.e., before the evironmentalist whackoos destroyed the agency. I have wanted to go back to Happy Camp for more than 40 years and plan to do so now that my wife has retired too. The last image I have in my mind is of Orleans Mountain in my rear view mirror as seen somewhere along the road to Yreka, can't remember where. I spent several nights packing around in that area and slept under the stars near the lookout tower on Orleans Mtn. I remember the road from Happy Camp down to Ti Bar, Orleans area was always under construction. Hope this is completed 44 years later. Jim Dukes USFS Retired |

I drove the only Yreaka taxie as a part time job because the Site was under construction. The taxie's home base was the Russell's Hotel accross from the police station. We lived on W. Miner next to the Fire Station and accross from the Libary. It was not unusual to deliver 'supplies' to miners on the klamath River that were still mining gold. Gold was $35.00 an ounce in those days. I drove to Happy Camp more than a few times and have fond memories of the wonderful people that I had involved in my life. |

It was the Summer of my life and I will always hold a spot in my heart for the little town along the Klamath. A few years later I backpacked up from Elk Creek into the Marbles, hitting Blue Granite, Ukonom and Cuddahy Lakes and that was a time I'll never forget, either. Eight days, and didn't see another soul until pounding down the trail back to the car.
My mom was born and (mostly) raised in Fort Jones and I had shirttail relatives all over Scott Valley. I love the area and always have a yearning to go back. My mother's name was Crawford, and any info about her Dad, Thomas, would be treasured. Bill |

| Comments: | Hi, I was born in Happy Camp in 1966 and our family moved out when I was in 1st grade. My grandfather, dad and uncles (Roads) ran a guide service on the Klamath River. Some of my family still owns property up China Creek. We recently visited Happy Camp again over Labor Day weekend and stopped by the cemetary to pay respects to my Uncle, Dennis Roads who was killed at the age of 20 in the Vietnam War. I understand that his highschool sweetheart still tends to his grave site. We tried to locate her during our visit, but were unable to get any information. |

As it is I love history of all kinds and this page is no exception. It reminds me of having a subscription to organic gardening or the like, I'm always left hungering for more info and wishing there was more to read lol. Keep up the good work, you are doing something right. I hope to join the history making of daily life in Happy camp real soon. Till then, keep doing what you are doing.

| Comments: | Great website!
I lived in Happy Camp in the early '60s. My father (Fred Bluma) owned the "Happy Camp Motel and Trailer Park" just south of the old elementry school. Have many fond memories of floating down Indian Creek to the river, and then down to Clear creek on old logging truck inner tubes. Also remember going to church in an old log cabin with a big pot belly stove that glowed red in the winter. I believe it was a Catholic Church. Another fond memory was the 4th of July picnic at the high school where we had to catch a greased pig. Some people I can remember is a girl with beautiful red hair (1st crush), I believe her name was Jamie Lyn Davis, and a local native boy with a glass eye, a great chum whose grandfather lived way up Elk Creek and raised milk goats. My family moved out of Happy Camp a month before the big flood. Someday I hope to visit and remenence. Would love to see old school pics from the early '60's elementry school. Anyone out there with pics? Tony Bluma Wasilla, Alaska ajinak@mtaonline.net |

| Comments: | When I was 13, which was around 1954, I spent the summer having fun and herding cattle for my great-uncle Virgil Roberts. Virgil was 75 years old at the time and had dislocated his shoulder when his horse threw him. My dad volunteered my services without asking if I wanted spend my summer working on a ranch. I am sure glad he did it although I was pretty upset at the time.
It was a real education for me and an experience I have shared with many others over the years. I fished for my dinner (trout) in a small stream that ran along a dirt logging road that also went to a commercial gold mine. My uncle and his wife Dolly, lived in a small house that used a waterwheel for electricity at night. They had no refrigerator and no daytime electricity. They had a barn, about 13 head of cattle, two buckskin horses and a worthless sheep dog named "Bobby". Bobby was a lot of fun but really messed up the cattle when I was trying to round them up. I remember the waterwheel being waterlogged on one side because the heavier side sat stationery in a pool of water during the day. I remember digging a drainage ditch so the pond would drain and the wheel could dry out when the wheel wasn't turning during the day. I also nailed and tied some old scrap metal parts to compensate for the heavier side until it started drying out. I also remember bragging to my uncle about shooting a porcupine. He asked me if I remembered where I left it. I told him "yes" and he said I had to go back, gut it and skin it and bring it back to aunt Dolly. I was shocked! He said anything I killed, I had to eat. I was glad I didn't shoot a skunk! I didn't shoot a whole lot any more either. My wife and I were back in Happy Camp a few years ago. We tried to find the road and their house but had no luck. Their place was right on the dirt road and anywhere from 15 to 30 miles out of Happy Camp. It sure would be nice to head up that way and see the area where they lived but I don't know how to go about finding it. Is there any records or old folks that might remember my aunt and uncle? I'm sure they came to town from time to time for supplies although they were pretty self sufficient up there. I believe they lived there up until the late sixties. Would appreciate any help in finding that property. Jim Miller Coronado California e-mail jmille69@san.rr.com |

| Comments: | My grandparents, Louis (Loui) and Madeline Smith moved to HC in the early 40's and lived on a claim on the east fork of Elk creek. I can still vividly remember them waiting for us at the end of the road with the pack mules when we would visit! It took severl years for them to get a road up to the cabin. We spent all of our vacations and holidays there when I was growing up. For a boy growing up, there was not a better place to be. My granfather died in the early 60's and the last time I was in HC was during the floods of 63-64 - what a time that was!. My grandmother moved to Ashland shortly after that winter and the Forest Service bulldozed the cabin. I have thought often about going back to look around but just have not made it. But your web site has inspired me and I'll be there yet this fall.

| Comments: | My father's name was Harold (Swede) Johnson and he was a gold miner in the area during the 1940's and years after. He is buried in the cemetary at Happy Camp near the river. I've seen his grave, sometime in the early 1970's, but don't see any mention on the cemetary website. Do you think his gravestone washed away in one of the floods?
My father, Harold, was part of the early rough and ready atmosphere, before TV, when men enjoyed a good bar fight after working hard all day. He played the guitar at the dance hall on Saturday nights while Mrs. Dunham played the piano. He truly enjoyed wine, women, and song, to my mother, Marjorie's, sad dismay. My Mom loved swimming in the river and we went to the swimming holes often during the summer with friends. Harold "Swede" Johnson drove the mail to Witchipec(sp?), mined, fought fire, and helped the one-armed Sheriff protect the town from visiting "rowdies". The early 1940's was a unique time to be a little girl in Happy Camp. I also remember the black bears that Ed Head had down at his general store in a cage; the wonderful ice cream cones at the corner drug store where a hauntingly strong vanilla scent perfumed my memory forever. |

| Comments: | It was very interesting reading the mining history of Happy Camp, but where is the logging history? I couldn't find any mention of Floyd St. John who I have always heard was was involved with building a logging mill there. He was my great uncle and lived in Happy Camp with his wife Virginia for many years. They had a log house on the bluff overlooking the Klamath River. I remember the gorgeous knotty pine paneling inside. Does anyone living there now know of more details about them? I'm compiling the family history. |

| Comments: | Hi. I am a descendant of Henry Doolittle, who is mentioned in your web page for Happy Camp. I'm having great fun trying to trace Henry's family back to the east. Henry went onto Washington State with his second wife, Ellen Shattuck (from Randolph, New York State) and his children Anna and my grandfather William Henry Doolittle. He later died in Washington State. My grandfather William Henry went into real estate in Washington and Oregon, and later became Mayor of Ontario, Oregon, 1921-1929, where he died. |
