How lucky we are to have visited this timeless place. My wife Karen and my two children Ukiah15 years and Modeena 12 years travelled overland from the wonderful Antigua in Guatemala to San Lucas in July 2007, having visited Tikal days before .
The vision Flavia had for sharing the beauty and special nature of San Lucas with free thinking folk from around the planet , is borne out by the feeling it instills and that remains with you long after you have re entered your regular world .
San Lucas merges with it's natural environment and evokes the Eco ethos without commercial baggage ,the staff are real ,and at one with the other indigenous peoples who live in the surrounding area and delight in the presence of visitors from far away .
Lush verdent vistas ,indigenous food , superb natural history, activities at your own leisure , this should not be a once in a lifetime destination .
Thank You Flavia and everyone @ Hacienda San Lucas .

Dear Flavia,

Thanks you so much for providing Peter and me with a really magical three nights! We loved the Hacienda, from our candlelit room to the superb food, beautiful flowers, lovingly and tastefully restored building and grounds. It was a great pleasure to meet you and to hear the history of the Hacienda. We keep thinking of the wonderful opportunities you have provided for many of the local people, and how much they have learned from you. What a gift you have given! We loved watching your staff grinding corn, making tamales, etc., and were very impressed with the excellent service they provided (and especially with all Argi's warmth and care). We hope to have an opportunity to visit again.
Best wishes,

Greetings from Norway

After a long car drive from Atitlan in Guatemala we arrived Hacienda San Lucas November 21st 2007 in the evening – and what a reception – warm welcome greetings and embraces from Falvia and some of her employees. This took place on the parking place with candles and a big full moon on a clear sky.
What a fantastic place we had com to, candles and lanterns threw light around and gave a fairy-tale atmosphere we shall never forget.
San Lucas encircled by dense vegetation lies on a hill over the centre of Coban and with a fantastic view – it is like a paradise!
Cosy rooms – hearty and nice people – nice food and drink, but a much too short stay. This place we just have to return to.

http://www.yogaonroatan.com I recently visited Hacienda San Lucas with a group of girlfriends for a restorative weekend. This was an experience that will forever remain in our hearts. The energy and warmth we received was like a gift from God and it has changed all of us in many ways. We were especially blessed to have shared this experience with Aum Rak and Leah. The sacred fire ceremony, guided meditations and readings we enjoyed were spiritually enlightening and very special. Our yoga classes at Gaia, overlooking the beautiful Copan valley, can not be compared to anything in this world!! Thank you to you all, you are all so special and I look forward to returning 'home' to spend more time with you.
Blessings,

We spent a wonderful evening in June at Hacienda San Lucas. What an amazing place! And Flavia, when you met us off the bus from San Pedro, it was like meeting an old friend. We felt so welcomed and 'at home'. Hacienda San Lucas has been a labour of love and your passion for the place shows through in every detail from the rooms to the presentation of the food. You made a French man very happy with the food, wine and ambience you have created!! We have travelled a lot throughout the world and Hacienda San Lucas has got to be one of the most special places we have had the opportunity to visit. We wish you well in the future with the plans for expansion, and hope to be able to return to Honduras and to San Lucas to spend more time there. We would highly recommend Hacienda San Lucas to fellow travellers who like comfort and luxury, but within a natural setting and which takes you back to the roots and history of the Copan region. Kind Regards and Thanks again. Catriona Rust (UK) and Jean-Marc DeJean (France)

The evening at Hacienda San Lucas has been one of the most inspiring, spiritual and energising visits ever.I went to San Lucas with my friend Natasha which made it even more special. The quaint tuk -tuk ride from Copan, the warm welcome by Flavia, the spectacular view from Gaia ,the traditional , rustic but warm Hacienda took my breath away.

The 5 course meal we had was so authentic that bthe taste still lingers.

But best of course was the affection and warmth of Flavia, a 60 year old woman , with the energy of a 20 year old and a heart of gold.

Thanks Flavia and Natasha for this wonderful experience!!

what a wonderful experience at the Hacienda San Lucas. We loved our room, candle lit and hammocks outside the door for relaxation. The breakfast of handmade tortillas, black beans and scrambled eggs with chilies was the best ever and we are still talking about it!!! The magical ruins called Los Sapos were only a short walk from the Hacienda and we were accompanied by Poli, the owner's yellow lab who kept us company. We walked a little further and came upon the Mayan village of La Pintada. What an experience....the little children all came out to see us and try and sell their cornhusk dolls. It was touching. Overall a great place! Can't wait to go back!

This morning I asked my wife what her favorite thing was about our recent visit to the Hacienda San Lucas. She thought about it for quite a while before admitting she couldn't decide. Being of like mind, I decided to make a list of some (not all, the list would be too long) of the things that make this place so remarkable, in order to clarify our thinking. Was it...

Our room, large, flagstone floored, cedar beamed, lavishly illuminated with candles.

The view from our veranda across the Copan Valley, distant mountaintops dissolving in misty cloud banks only to be fitfully illuminated by flashes of lightning.

The accomodating and professional staff, unobtrusive yet always there when needed. I won't soon forget stepping out of a tuk-tuk after returning to the hacienda in a late night thunderstorm and having a staff member appear instantly out of the pouring rain with an umbrella. How did he even know we were there?

Being greeted upon arrival by Dona Flavia who invites you to come down to the main house after settling in for a drink and to meet the other guests, followed by dinner. It was as though we were all guests at a country house weekend.

The peacefulness and remoteness of the hacienda which, along with all the other features, makes this place a unique experience.

Since Frances and I still can't decide what we like best about the Hacienda San Lucas, a return visit will obviously be necesary to resolve the issue.

What a truly awe inspiring place. The welcoming atmosphere and stunning views made for a perfect start to our trip. My only regret was that we were not able to stay longer due to our itinerary.

The sense of history was almost overwhelming as we sat in the meditation area watching the sun set beyond the hills of Copan Ruinas.

my only regret with hacienda san lucas is that i couldn't stay longer. from our pick-up at the bus station, to our ride up the hill in the bed of the pick-up truck, down to our 4:45 am wake up call and our cab waiting for us to take us back down to the bus station (arrangements made courtesy of flavia of course), and every moment in between, hacienda san lucas is close to heaven, in look and feel. the grounds here feel sacred, in part due to Los Sapos, and in part due to Flavia's uncanny ability to make guests feel like they are as connected to the land and the hacienda as she is. Every moment of our stay here was perfect. One of the best meals I've ever had (and undoubtedly the best meal during my trip to Honduras) was made from scratch in the hacienda's kitchen. the corn soup! the rave reviews are to be believed. Aesthetically, this place was a dream. perfectly appointed rooms, excellent hammock-to-guest ratio, sweeping views of the valley around every corner...i cannot say enough about how wonderful our stay was. i cannot wait to return. someday it will happen. thank you flavia and everyone at hacienda san lucas!

Hello Flavia and staff,

Myself, my girlfriend, and some friends had the fortune of staying at your beautiful hacienda July 21-23. It was such a perfect way to enter central america. Just the environment you have created within the beautiful Copan valley is breathtaking. However you have also filled it with an obvious love of life and people from the staff you have to your personal attention to guests.

Our last night there we had the pleasure of having an amazing dinner with you as we begged you to stay at our table. To hear your stories and think about how much you accomplished to make the hacienda an extension of your home made the entire experience unforgettable. Afterwards, we went to Roatan and Tela, the enitre time no one could match our experience with you Flavia.

Thank you for your hospitality.

Dear Flavia and staff,

It has been a month since we got back and our boys are still taling about the wonderful time at "Hacienda" and Miss Flavia.

We should have stayed more nights. Just as we were getting "in the grove" it was time to leave.
We loved the ruins at Copan (Julio was a fantastic guide), we loved the town of Copanas ruinas, especially riding on the tuk tuk taxis.

The Mountain Macaw bird park was a wonderful afternoon for the kids and us. They loved holding the birds and seeing the different parrots in a fantastic unspoilt setting.
The zipline was so much fun we did it 2 days in a row. Even the little one did a stage.

Again ...thank you so much for sharing your family treasure. everything from the wonderful Honduran meals your gracious staff cooked and served, the candle lit rooms with comfy hammocks overlooking the farmhouse to the specatacular evening sunsets over the Copan river valley made this stay memorable.

http://www.MaryAnnMichels.blog.com Hacienda San Lucas...A place of peace. A place to restore and renew oneself. A sacred land that nurtures one’s soul. At Hacienda San Lucas there is something so very special about the air, the views, the flowers, the candlelit rooms, the butterflies, Los Sapos, and the marvelous staff that exists only to help and to serve. One can sit for hours in its incredible energy and simply BE. To meditate, or to experience Yoga, Chi Gong, Tai Chi, or sacred ceremony at Gaia, the “temple” built upon what is likely an earthen mound beneath which lie ancient temples, is a memory one cherishes. I lived for 3 ½ months in Copan and brought every new friend, every new acquaintance, even total strangers that I encountered up to Hacienda San Lucas to experience it’s peaceful, nurturing, and restorative energy. They all thanked me. My last two weeks in Copan were spent at 2 spiritual workshops held at Hacienda San Lucas’ Gaia. Unforgettable! Magnificent panoramic views, quiet peaceful surroundings filled with nature sounds, Yoga sessions …and for the more active - horseback riding, hiking, Rainforest ziplines, tours of the Mayan Ruins and Bird Sanctuary, and the best dining in all of Honduras and quite possibly Central America.

These things are just a part of what made our trip to Copan and the Hacienda San Lucas so memorable. But these things can be found in one degree or another in other locations too.

The unique ingredient that separates the Hacienda San Lucas experience from all others is the immediate sense of being in the company of long-time dear friends the moment you are greeted by Flavia and meet her staff of Sara and Agri. I warn you, their outgoing easy natures and mellowness are contagious amongst their guests and staff!

There is no better way to unwind from the stresses of city life. Break off a little “peace on Earth” for yourself in Copan at the Hacienda San Lucas.

As much as I love Todd (the fellow who signed in below me) he just didn't do "Flavi's Place" justice with his guestbook signing. Magical, spiritual, amazing... those words don't begin to describe the wonder of Hacienda San Lucas. We immediately knew we had chosen the right location to kick off our Honduras vacation when we were pleasantly greeted, by our first names, upon arrival. Sarah was a most gracious hostess (and bartender) and of course we loved Argie who so politely allowed me to practice my broken-at-best Spansih. Meeting Flavia was like coming home because somewhere in my past I know that I have known this woman. She just exudes warmth and no one can make you feel better about who you are and where your life is leading you than Flavia. What a truly connected, grounded and spiritual being. Thank you to you, Flavia, your staff and our new found friends for a beautiful Honduran experience. Hacienda San Lucas will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Dear Flavia and Sarah -

From your emails to your warm welcome at the bus station, I knew staying at San Lucas would be like visiting dear friends. I didn't expect the magic . . .

Twilight arrival - lamp-lit gardens - candle-lit room - every guest should arrive this way into San Lucas' warm embrace. Time stands still if you allow it to - swaying in a woven hammock listening to the tropical birds and the chatter and laughter of the charming girls who care for the hacienda. Much like a grandmother at Thanksgiving, the chef deftly creates miracles in the kitchen and still has a moment to teach curious guests how to pat out tortillas.

San Lucas works its magic on all its guests. Under the influence of candlelight and excellent wine, dinner conversations become discoveries of new friends and shared experiences. I imagine it is like an earlier age when few travelled for pleasure and found camaraderie with fellow adventurers.

Saying goodbye at the end of my stay was as bittersweet as saying goodnight each evening. I was happy and satisfied, and at the same time, sad to leave the warmth of friends. One leaves San Lucas a richer person, more connected with one's self and the world - and with an open invitation to return.

Flavia, thank you for everything -

Kitty Schainman

Flavia, it has taken a year (more) to write, and I apologize. But we have often thought of our stay with you at the end of 2004 with our newborn Louise (2 months). We were hesitant to make such a trip, especially at that time, and your welcoming invitation and assurance tipped the scales. And what a delight once we arrived. Fresh flowers, homemade everything, and all the charm in the world. What a couple of dinners we had: candlelight, gourmet food inspired by such local recipes, views over the valley and a team that couldn't be nicer. If one wants to start an inn that is top of the line, but reflects all that is local, come to the Hacienda San Lucas.

We still laugh when we think of how I had lost the keys to my rental car at the ruins, and when found by the soldiers, you made them come find me at the bird sanctuary! And take me back to my car. We know who runs that part of Honduras, that's for sure!

Flavia, pardon my delay in writing. We think of you often,

We spent the first few nights of our honeymoon at Hacienda San Lucas. What a memorable, romantic and magical experience! Our beautiful room stood perched on a hill overlooking the hills, town and the ruins of Copan. Late afternoon, we would sit in hammocks on the wrap around porch outside our room and marvel at the stunning scenery. We can't say enough about the hospitality and kindness of Flavia, Sarah and the wonderful people at Hacienda. Not only did they patiently give us directions every day to get about town but they arranged incredibly informative and memorable tours of the Copan ruins and the bird sanctuary as well as a beautiful Christman Eve dinner at Twisted Tanya's. After dinner one night we had the pleasure of sitting on the back veranda with guests and staff, drinking wine and laughing late into the night. Last but definately not least - the food at the Hacienda was to die for. Every morning, we'd drink delicious coffee and eat some of the world's best pancakes, fresh eggs and fruit. Thank you so much making our honeymoon special and memorable. We can't wait to come back!

Much Love,
Katy & Donald

During a one month trip to El Salvador and Honduras I stayed three nights at the Hacienda San Lucas. What a gem – what an experience! The San Lucas (and thereafter Copan ruins) are easily the highlight of my visit. I recommend anyone stay at least three or four nights to enjoy this at the relaxed pace it deserves (the hacienda, town, ruins, bird park, hot water springs etc). Flavia and Sarah know some terrific guides for the ruins so ask them to arrange it.

Based on the web-site and the guest comments I had huge expectations of San Lucas in advance of my visit – which were easily surpassed. The new accommodation is a triumph and blends perfectly with the main building – everything there simply ‘belongs’. The San Lucas is set on a huge and stunning site. The walks are fantastic and relaxing in a hammock or chair with some terrific lemonade, to watch a sunset, even better!

I am something of a caffeine addict and I have to say that San Lucas sources the best coffee I had in Honduras...why did I forget to buy some?...it means I must go back, I suppose.

The ambience is serene in the evening, all lit by candles or lamps and the fascinating company of the staff and other guests. The food is terrific – I was completely spoilt with the quality, flavours and presentation.

Hacienda San Lucas cannot be compared to other hotels or guesthouses, it is a very unique experience. What makes it so? People, in my opinion. The staff are so obviously happy and content, I felt immediately at peace when I arrived. Sarah is a super and confident host, a highly capable organiser. Flavia (Queen of Copan, if not Honduras!) is simply a wonderful and gifted person who has executed a dream – and created a reality that is heaven on earth!

PS
Sarah / Flavia – I really don’t know how to properly thank you for helping me when my rental car broke down between La Ceiba and Trujillo. I was alone and the logistical nightmare of towing it back to San Salvador seemed overwhelming. With your incredible contacts all the arrangements fell in place. You are already busy enough, looking after the Hacienda and its guests, and I shall always be grateful for your help.

Just occasionally, one comes across a hotel which does much more than just provide accommodation. Hacienda San Lucas is just such a place which will always have a special place in our hearts and memories.

Flavia and Sarah had already been so charming and helpful over the e-mail whilst we were planning our Honduras holiday. When Iberia failed to get our bags to San Pedro Sula and no-one was available to help our carefully made plans appeared to be going down the chute. No problem: Flavia encouraged us to get down to Copan and get on with enjoying ourselves whilst she got on with tracking down and beating up the necessary airline officials and recovering our lost property. The warmth, attention and kindness of our reception in Copan Ruinas - and all on an evening when the Hacienda were hosting a 200-man conference - was spectacular.

Carlos was standing outside of the hacienda with his wonderful smile and greeting us like old friends by name when we got there. Later on we got to enjoy a couple of his superb, creative dinners each based on thoughtful and innovative use of local ingredients. This chap is a lot of fun and very talented.

The rooms at the hacienda are lovely, the town and the ruins completely accessible and the location has the best view in the area.

There is lots more we could say about our wonderful time at Hacienda San Lucas but they are our memories. For anyone wondering where to stay on a visit to Copan, the choice of Hacienda San Lucas will provide for a very special occasion amongst wonderful people.

Thanks and love to you all,

Mark & Marc (Belgium)

EEUU I took my sons to Copan, and the three of us took spanish classes at Ixbalanque. Unfortunately, we were only there for a week, but I thought the instruction and personal attention was supurb. I wish we could have stayed for much longer-leaving was difficult.

The family we stayed with were wonderful to us, and helped with the spanish we were learning by having simple conversations with us at meal time. There are few people who speak english in Copan, so it is a true immersion experience. The towns people are wonderful, friendly, and helpful. It seemed as if everyone were happy to help us learn spanish-they took the time to understand what we were trying to say, and help correct grammer and pronunciation.

An added bonus-this is where the best coffee in the world comes from! The down side: once you have had coffee in Copan, brewed by people who had their own coffee plantation, you will never go back to that swill they serve in starbucks!!! www.ixbalanque.com

Last month, we enjoyed a truly magical stay at Hacienda San Lucas. The Hacienda more than lived up to expectations – the natural beauty, the ambiance, the warmth and hospitality of the staff were without equal. The Hacienda is very picturesque and beautiful, but is truly a sight to behold after dark, lit solely by candles and lanterns.

We put ourselves in Flavia and her assistant Sarah’s capable hands and they did everything they could to make our stay as comfortable and memorable as possible. Even though she was immersed in preparation to host an upcoming United Nations gathering, Flavia nonetheless was very much on top of everything. She tracked us down in a while we were having lunch in a restaurant to check up on how we were doing, and again we ran into her while visiting Macaw Mountain, where she insisted on ordering pizza in for dinner that night at the Hacienda for our two picky gringa daughters!

Carlos, the chef, was away during our visit, so we cannot speak to what dinners may be like when he is in residence; however, the meals were fantastic under the direction of the talented cooks! Each five-course meal was a delectable preparation of authentic Mayan and Central American dishes.

Thanks to Flavia, Sarah and all the wonderful people at San Lucas for making our family’s stay so special.
