After our earlier communication,as you prepared the application for this bridge I lost track of you.
Your article indicates work may have already begun. Has this project been contracted with the transportation cabinet?
I will check to see as it may cause problems with reimbursement if you begin work before the contract is signed.
I will continue to monitor the project as it proceeds. Good luck on your second application and congratulations on receiving the funding to get started.
Do not hesitate to contact me If I can help in any way.

I saw your webpage of the Blackford Bridge. Have you ever thought of putting the poem "The Bridge
Builder" in the web page?I think that the individual who spent hour upon hours in this project should have his name and address somewhere on this webpage. I also thought that a map showing how to get to the bridge from each county might be something that could be in the web page. Keep on and there is no way to stop putting things in the web page.

I am a great niece of Thomas Raye Robertson and I believe what you have done for my great uncle is wonderful. It is great to know that he will be remembered in the town of Blackford forever. I am sure you have gotten many emails from the Robertson family, but I know it doesn't hurt to get another. I didn't know my great Uncle, but I am sure he was a great man. I have talked to my grandmother Thelma about him and she has told me a little and I have learned some more from your website. Thanks for all you have done for our family in order to keep the bridge where it is today. Thanks from the bottom of my heart!

Comments:Dear Mr. Witherspoon,
I hope you can save your Railroad Bridge.I walked on those railroad ties when I was about 8 years old, holding tightly to my Dad's hand.Looking
down at that water was frightening,I've dreamed of it since that time.
My father was born in Blackford or near there. Thomas Leslie "Boss Scott",My mother was Zeta Samuel Scott born & raised in Crittenden County.
My first cousin was the late Donald Elmore Samuels
who also resided in Crittenden county.Has anyone contacted the National Preservation Society or the Rails to Trails group? I'm a Civil war buff,my grandson is a reenactorfor the north and studied to be a museum curator.Has anyone enlisted help from other people, women's groups, anything? My Dad was proud of that old bridge. He worked for C&I RailRoad in Evansville
Ind. He loved trains and "engines".My cousin sent me the clipping because I ask about the "trestle".
Even though I was born in Evansville,I consider Ky. my home. I left Ky. in 39 and Evansville in 48.
I'm 71 years old,Well I wish you luck! Here in Florida there are Simple road signs along the road where they once had RailRoad Station's..It's sad!

Comments:My favorite childhood memories, were just across the train bridge, in Crittenden county. Growing up in Blackford, meant crossing the bridge, on horse, motorcycle or by walking. Getting a horse to cross the bridge was taking one's life in your own hands. I called myself brave, looking back maybe young and stupid fit's the definition better.
Mrs. Olene Heady used to invite the children of Blackford to attend the revival services at the little country church across the bridge. Several of us would cross the bridge to attend the services, mainly so we could walk home after dark on the bridge. (normally we were not allowed on it after dark.)
Even though we had heard stories about being on the bridge after dark, we knew nothing could harm us, because after all, we had just left church.
My favorite memories of the bridge don't involve just the structure, but the people I grew up with in a little town called Blackford. Things never stay the same except in our memories.

Comments:You have done a great job in putting this web site together. I was very impressed with the story of Tommy Robinson as he was my neighbor. I was only 11 years old when he went off to war, I remember when he left.
When I was in 2nd grade in Mrs. Ola Johnson's class she had pictures on the steroscope (3d)that I used to look at. One of my favorites was the swing bridge that used to be in Blackford prior to the stationary bridge that is there now. The bridge would swing perpendicular with the river so the barges going up or downstream could pass through. The barges were used to haul logs to the sawmill and lumber from the sawmill (that was located upstream from the Ford somewhere in the vicintiy of the Blackford Cemetery but accross the river). The barges would go back down Tradewater River to the Ohio River at Caseyville, Ky. This I learned from school as well as my father Willie Graves.

Remembering a POW/MIA is a top priority on my list, as I live daily with a reminder of war and one who has not returned home . All of our Vets should be remembered, and you are doing the correct thing by honoring them. A little bit of Blackford history- two first cousins, living side by side in Blackford were killed in WW11, one , by the name of Perry, the other, Ringo. Blackford has always honored its own, and were always proud of the sacricices made. Bless you for your dedication.

Comments:My sister, Connie, forwarded me this site about our old hometown. I was born in Blackford, KY in 1956 and our family moved to California in 1967, where we still are today. Both my parents, Marx Lenten Litchfield, and Reba Frances Martin and most, if not all four, of my grandparents were born in Blackford. In my mind, it is as it was in 1967, but it appears there have been some changes for the better. We lived on a road adjacent to the railroad tracks and around the corner from the old Baptist and Methodist churches. At the other side of our home down the road towards the post office was "Ringo's" store. John Dye was our great uncle, who was married to my grandfather's (William H. Martin) sister, Nancy. I remember walking across the railroad bridge as a tiny child and being afraid I would fall through the "slats" in the bridge to the river/rocks below. I hope to someday bring my sons, who are now young adults, to Blackford to show them their ancestor's and mother's birthplace. Thanks for the website. It really touches my heart. Sincerely, Debbie-Kaye Drake

Comments:I'm sorry I missed the dedication this past Memorial Day 2006. An invitation from the Kentuckian who saved my life in Vietnam, Brenton "Dan" Witherspoon, was an honorable invitation from him personally. I visited the Blackford Bridge personally with Dan after our 35 year reunion in 2003 and shared the immensity of this American Hero Soldiers dream to connect this road for community medical emergency services on behalf of the people of Kentucky.Dreams do come true for those who believe wholeheartedly of their convictions to assist to the needs of others. I hope to walk across this bridge once before I pass from this earth.
