I am stunned and crushed. My first inkling that Bob had died was when I received the email last Saturday night titled “Bob Patten Memorial…” For far too long, I’d been telling myself, we really need to get together, we’re way overdue. I never dreamed I’d run out of time in which to do that.
Bob and I had been friends since ’67 or ‘68 … almost four decades of shared history. Beyond all the wild and crazy things we did from the midst of psychedelic and hallucinogenic fogs in our youth, there were times when we were both there to prop one another up after particularly devastating emotional losses in our lives. He was my kicking around buddy and vice versa, when we both needed one and later, just for the fun of it. All those experiences formed a bond that never changed. I loved him and cared about him and I knew it was mutual. It was such a joy that of all my friends from my formative years, Bob was the one here in Atlanta when I moved here.
Some of you know me; some do not. Most of the time, Bob and I were in closer contact than we had been the last couple of years; as mentioned, we were way overdue. Except for the times we’d get together for the sole purpose of getting caught up, most of our interaction centered – as it always had – around music. Whether he was taking me to hear a local artist he really wanted me to hear; inviting me to accompany him when he had inside, industry passes to a particular event; passing along cd’s he thought I’d like; or I was going to hear him play, the heart and core of our connection was a mutual passion for music. I missed his earlier bands here in Atlanta, but I managed to hear him play quite a bit with the last three. Bob was a really great bass player and I loved watching him play.
I’m thankful that the axis of our friendship was music, but my connection to him, with him, was so much more than that. This is a particularly difficult loss for me, but I’m so grateful I had the opportunity of knowing him and calling him friend. One of my best.

I am so sorry to hear about Bob. He was such a great musician and the times that I was able to meet and talk with him he was such a great laid back kind of guy. I truely appreciate the fact that he played for the love of playing and nothing more. That is what truely made Bob a "real" musician. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bob's family. That family including his band and beloved fans. A man like that will be missed by all.
You guys have done a great job in giving tribute to Bob. Thank you for that. He did deserve to have a great tribute to himself as you guys did at Motorheads on Saturday. Everyone really enjoyed the music and the tributes. Thank you. Please let us know if there is anything that we can do to help out in anyway. |

Hello, this is Carlos from the Breeze Kings
As many of you have heard, a terrible tragedy has befallen not only the Breeze Kings, but the entire Atlanta blues community.
On the morning of Sunday October 2 at approximately 9:30am, the Breeze Kings were involved in an auto accident in Lake City FL. Three of us – myself, Jim Ransone, and Matt Sickles, walked away bruised, scraped, and broken hearted. Our friend and drummer, Tim Gunther, was not so lucky and passed away at the scene.
We hope that memories of the great gig we played the night before were in Tim’s dreams as he was sleeping in the van at the time the accident occurred.
The rest of us: band members, musicians, fans, and friends, will have our memories of Tim to get us through this very difficult time.
Formal services are being arranged and will be announced as soon as details are available on the Breeze Kings web site www.breezekings.com
In the meantime, all are invited to an informal gathering of friends at the Northside Tavern on Thursday October 6 at 8:00pm. There will be no live music. There will be love, memories, and a celebration of Tim’s life and the impact he had on all of us who knew him. Friends are encouraged to speak their thoughts and share their stories.
Donations will be accepted to help cover final expenses, which are being handled by Tim’s fiancé, Rene Reno, and the Breeze Kings.
There is no way for one person to reach all of Tim’s friends by phone or email. Please forward this information to all who may be interested.
Our most sincere thanks goes out to all of those who have contacted us with love and compassion. Please continue to keep Tim and his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.

Bob...There is so much I would like to say but the words are hard to find. I will miss the talks about the places that use to be and aren't any more like Hotlanta, Richards, Cooleys Electric Ballroom, Underground and the music that made them so special. That's how I feel about you being gone. We lost something special that used to be and isn't anymore except in our memories. Like the places and music we used to talk about, you will be another memory that I will share with others who heard you play and saw the special person there who was so talented and so real.
How rare it is to hear a band and really hear the bass walking through the music like only you could do it. Sometimes it walked hand in hand with the groove when everyone was in the pocket and your smile was there to show how much you loved it. Sometimes it was like a loving hand leading the way when others were tired or new or sad or just not in the groove and always with that smile.
You were an incredible musician and a truly real person. I will miss the conversations, the music and the smile.
Thank you for being my friend...

It's taken me several days to figure out what I wanted to say and I still don't know how to express how I feel about Bob's passing.
Bob was a great bass player, to be sure. It seemed like he was always in the right place at the right time. I'm also sure that he would tell you that wasn't always the case. Humility is not a trait you often find in musicians, especially those those that play stringed instruments. Bob had it in spades.
I lived in Jacksonville for 16 years and knew a lot of people there. I had a lot of friends and some real close ones. When I first moved back to Atlanta I was somewhat lost in that I really didn't know anyone anymore. Of course that changed over a period of time as I gradually met people and went through the process of getting acquainted. One of the best things that ever happened to me was walking into the Blue Sky Tavern.
There I met a group of people who would, over time, become what I consider to be family. Jeff, Hal, Randy, Greg, Mark, Stella, Nicole, Steve, Gary, Dr. Payne, Blackjack and AJ, the Wilson Brothers, Danny, Michael, the list goes on and on. Bob was one of those people. Bob made me feel like a brother almost immediately and after several years of playing gigs, rehearsing, and jamming, we only became closer. While I never really joined the band, Bob said I was like the 5th Beatle. That felt good to me.
I have not stopped thinking about him since last Thursday and the one thing that always comes to mind is his smile. No matter what was happening around us, Bob always saw the humor in the circumstances.
Bob took what life gave him in stride and dealt with it. He did not whine and he didn't get depressed, he just did the best he could with a situation and moved on, all the time finding something humorous about it.
I don't know too many other people I can say that about. We could all take a few tips from Bob and we'd enjoy life more.
We all love you, Bob, and you're with us every time we hit the stage.

To the Blues Cats,
You guys gave me the honor of playing with you a few weeks ago at our party hosted by Joe and Julie Murphy. I have to say that it was the highlight of my year. I havent played with a band in over 20 years and even more so, in front of people. You guys have an incredible sound. I am very sorry for the loss of Bob, your bass player. My thoughts are with you.
I hope I get the chance to see and hear you guys play again soon. Maybe even sit in again! |

I'm grateful to have known Bob and heard him play. He was sincere, kind and unselfish, and he always made time to talk bass with me, even when I was drunk and obnoxious. It's rare to find a musician with his humility and grace.

Just got the word on Bob T. Patten. This is a sad day for the Atlanta music scene. He will be greatly missed. I remember the first time I heard Bob laying down that solid bass groove at what was Fatt Tuesday's in Buckhead over seven years ago. Always in the pocket, he never hit a bad note and always provided the solid platform from where Tim White, Greg Billingsley, Michael Storm, and Jeff could shine. It is easy to look good when you have a solid bass player like Bob backing you up with that deep pocket bass groove. His subtlety was his greatest talent - making others look good and not competing for the spotlight. It was obvious Bob was "in it" for the sheer joy of making music, and not to feed his ego or be the center of attention. I loved listening to his groove and I am grateful for the few times I had the honor of jamming with him on stage. Atlanta has lost what I consider to be one of the most talented, if not the best bass player in town. Rest in peace brother. |

Nice to have met you at the Ben Waters' gig at the Bulls Head pub in Barnes, here in the UK on 1 Feb. We had only a brief chat in the bar beforehand when I was with Pete Feenstra, and an equally brief chat after the gig when you gave me the web site address. Anyway, what a fine gig it was and a bonus to see you, Bill Hurley and Tim Hurniman join Ben for a few 'toons'!! Hope we meet up again either when you are next over in these parts or, if i get a chance, in Atlanta.
Best wishes. |

That thing sitting beside Michael is just so ugly I have to keep going back and looking at it. It's like I'm so disgusted, I can't quit looking. WOW!! That boy has an ugly girlfriend! |

A New Blues Cat Fan |

I saw Blues Cat at Fuzzy's in Atlanta on December 23rd, and was blown away. Jeff said that he was a little sick, but I couldn't tell. Guitar player was great, the bass player held it down, the keyboard player awsome. I think the drummer had just started with them, but i would have never known.

Well your private party sounded great. I found the party just at the police were leaving :( I heard you and wanted to check you out. I did check the mileage and as the crow flies, I guess it was over 3/4 of a mile but less than 1 mile. Sounded great at my house, sorry they made you stop. |

Hey Cats,
Checked out your site from Nashua NH. I went to college with Geoff's brother Conan. Your live streaming tunes are cool. Seems like you have a good local following.
Conan & I were in a short-lived band in Henniker NH called Great Great Gadfly. |
