I visited your museum on Tuesday the 16th of July and found everything very interesting. I should like to know the name of the senior operator with whom we had quite a chat, just before lunch time. I am thinking about writing a short article for the Marconi Veterans Newsletter, describing what we saw and also what we saw at the centenary exhibition in St. John's last summer. Could you help with the name, please? |

| Comments: | It is my great pleasure to inform you that I have agreed to serve as the interim Atlantic Regional Director of RAC until the end of December 2002 and that my appointment was confirmed by the RAC Board of Directors last Friday May 24th 2002. A full election will take place in the fall for this position.
For those of you who do not know me, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to give you a sense of why I think RAC is important to amateur radio in Canada and therefore why I have agreed to make this significant commitment to RAC. I have been employed by Dalhousie Univeresity in Halifax since 1972 and have taught anatomy in our medical school and served on the management team of the medical school for twelve years. However, I am in the process of taking early retirement from Dalhousie - in fact I cleaned out my desk and handed in my keys on Friday afternoon - and will now have much more time to devote to amateur radio. Like many, I got into amateur radio rather late in life and was first licensed in January 1994,obtaining my full HF privileges in March 1995. I saw amateur radio as a wonderful hobby to fill a potential void in my retirement years. On a more personal note, my other interests are sailing, music and photography. My wife Jean and I will have been married for 33 years this June and we reside in Seabright Nova Scotia, just a bit north of Peggy's Cove on St. Margaret's Bay. Jean is not an amateur but is an avid gardener and retired oncology nurse. Our two grown children are in Toronto attending university but we still have the companionship of two dogs (Lab and Shepherd/Doberman cross) and a cat, which the kids left behind with us when they left home. Now let me try to articulate why I am interested in making a commitment to RAC and what I believe I can bring to the organisation. It has been said that we live in interesting times and although somewhat overused, I believe that this saying very much extends to amateur radio as well. Communication has never been easier nor the choice of modes greater. Some view the proliferation of email and the development of Internet radio modes to be a threat to our avocation - amateur radio; I on the other hand view these new radio-related developments and options as an opportunity that will allow us to recruit new blood into the amateur radio community and to grow our hobby. Some would say that amateur radio has lost its relevance with the proliferation of alternate modes of communication. For example, during the recent crisis in Afghanistan, we have not required amateurs to patch radiophone calls home to family and friends from the war zone as we did in the past. Satellite phones and the Internet have taken over that role and indeed have performed it much more efficiently. In normal workaday situations in 2002, the cell phone, commercial trunked-mobile radio and satellite phones have all but eliminated the need for HF radio - until a crisis strikes. Then cell sites can be quickly swamped, and with wide-spread power outages there even appears to be the potential for the most sophisticated of fibre optic based, trunked-mobile systems to fail. In these circumstances amateur radio could be, and indeed has been on several occasions in the past few years, the only effective mode of communicating in an extreme emergency. This then brings me to RAC and why I think this national organisation is so important to our hobby. With all of the pressure on Industry Canada - the federal department responsible for radio frequency spectrum allocation - to allocate additional spectrum space to the ever increasing and voracious commercial appetite, government is going to be forced to look at how these new demands can be met. Remember, the radio frequency spectrum is a finite resource. So when push comes to shove, it will be the "squeaky wheel" that gets the oil. Indeed, the old adage "use it or lose it" will come into play big time, and amateur radio enthusiasts run the very real risk of seeing large areas of the radio frequency spectrum that were previously allocated to our exclusive use, being reallocated for commercial application. So what does this have to do with RAC you might ask. Well in my view it has everything to do with RAC. One of the prime roles of RAC is to represent the amateur radio community to government at all levels, including internationally, and to fight to keep, and indeed expand, our amateur radio frequency spectrum allocations. Basically, it comes down to effective lobbying. Remember the "squeaky wheel" example? Well the squeaky wheels that you hear in Ottawa are the voices of the lobbyists that are hired by the private sector to promote their agenda, which is clearly to capture more of our radio frequency spectrum. The most important role for RAC, as I see it, is to enhance its presence on Parliament Hill and to continue to fight vigorously on our behalf. Because of my past experience in lobbying for health research funding I believe that I have the experience to effectively assist RAC in this important aspect of its mission. However, if RAC is to be truly taken seriously by government, it must not only speak for radio amateurs in Canada, it must be seen by Ottawa bureaucrats to speak for ALL radio amateurs in Canada. This brings me to the final point that I want to make. In order for RAC to be an effective voice for amateur radio in Canada it must become much more inclusive of the broader amateur radio community. My vision for RAC, and that of our President Bill Gillis, is that every licensed amateur in Canada is a RAC member in good standing. You may say that this is will never happen, but I disagree. Indeed, if the membership in RAC does not quickly begin to better reflect the total number of amateurs in Canada, then we collectively run the risk of being ignored by government. Amateur radio has a great deal to offer both to us, the amateurs, but more importantly to the broader community. We need to better sell our hobby and our capabilities to serve during emergencies. I believe that with strong leadership at the executive level, RAC can and will help us to do that. It is for these reasons then that I am delighted to join Bill Gillis and his RAC team. I look forward to serving you on the RAC Board of Directors and I hope that you will let me know what you think about RAC and what we might do to make this organisation more inclusive or, and relevant to the overall amateur radio community. In closing, let me say that I very much look forward to meeting many of you over the next six months or so at amateur radio flea markets throughout Atlantic Canada. Howard Dickson RAC Atlantic Regional Director P.S. Please pass this message on to your club membership. |

thought i'd send you some more info regarding Marconi: On may 21st 1901 the post set up by wireless telegraphy pioneer Marconi at queens park, Holyhead picked up the first ever ship-to-shore radio message from the middle of the atlantic. A ship calles ss lake champlain was going from liverpool to Halifax, Nova Scotia. An attempt was made to make a test radio transmission from the ship to crookhaven in southern ireland, but instead contact was made with the Marconi post at Holyhead, the station was thought to have been demolished after the second world war but was found to be still in existance and apart from the mast (arial) the house looks the same as it did in 1901. that is all from Richard and Ray Steadman 66 Queens park -Marconi Signal Station Holyhead. He retired from the CF a few years back and moved from Gander, Nfld to the Sydney area. His call in Gander was VO1MAT, not sure what his NS call is. If you know him and he is on the internet could you pass him my e-mail address and ask him to drop me a line. Good DXing Bob/VE3GLO/W3 (Severn, MD, USA) |

Enjoyed your site. Today I visited the Marion Mass. site of the NA Marconi Co.. The stub of one tower is still visible from the group of 12 towers which supported a one-mile antenna. The guy wire anchors are visible, set in enormous blocks of concrete. The site is now the headquarters campus of a company which manufactures electronic warefare equipment for the US, UK and Australian navies. Dr. Marconi would be pleased. Always glad to learn of Canadian organizations with wireless or ham radio interests. I work for a Canadian Company in the US. We have several Canadian hams in our company. Someday, when I re-visit Cape Breton Highlands National Park (I think that's the name of the park I visited thirty-five years ago) I'll look for the Society's meeting. Until then, 73's to you all.
