I enjoyed your pages. Thanks for the fine effort.

Living in a rural area, near a pond, starting about 2 months ago I daily feed cracked corn to 6 Canadian Geese, apparently
3 pair? They are interesting to watch, as we often do out our kitchen window. By now they have come to know me, and I
can get quite close, within a few feet of them. I don't try to get closer. It seems they come early morning, mid day, and late
evening looking for me, and the corn. They wait patiently to be fed, but will leave to return when they see me. Often they
will fly away to another area, but not for long.

I would guess these Geese are perhaps 10 to 14 pounds with a wing span of 3.5 to 4 feet. There is no visual difference in
the sexes, except the females are a bit smaller. The males are very protective of their ladies, and insure they get fed first
while they often stand guard with long outstreached necks. The lead or perhaps older male of the group seems to serve as
"Top Goose," and the younger males stand aside or get driven off by the older male. Sometines the older hen can also be
agressive in driving away other younger hens. Once the older couple has what they want they stand aside for the younger
crowd. I am assuming this is a related family.

It is soon to be spring mating season I wonder if they will leave or stay?

In my neighborhood, there is a pond that I like to
go to and feed the geese. It just so happened that there
were baby geese there, along with some older geese. In
all, there were ten geese. One of those baby geese had a
problem. Its wings were sticking out of its side. So I
fed the geese and went home.
As the days went on, the geese were no longer
babies and were probably ready to migrate for the winter.
All but one goose flew away; the goose that had a problem
with its wings.
I went to the pond often and fed the goose. I
wanted to give it a name, so I thought of the
name, “Donald,” and the goose seemed to like it.
Pretty soon, I was going to the pond practically
every day, and Donald would come closer and closer to me
when I fed him. I even got to pet him and he ate out of my
hand! When I walked around on the path along the pond,
Donald would follow me. So I got a friend to come and help
me feed him. She, as well, got very close to Donald.
In the meantime, I told my mom about the goose and
suggested that we should call a vet to somehow help Donald
before winter came and froze over the pond. So we called
an environmentalist and within a few weeks, she came to the
pond to see what kind of condition the goose was in. She
said that Donald had a severe case of “Angel Wings,” which
is something that affects geese from having a diet of too
much bread. She said that there was nothing she could do
to help Donald, so he remained at the pond.
I didn’t want Donald to end up dying in the winter,
so my mom decided to call a vet. The vet came and saw
Donald and tried to catch him, but it didn’t work. So she
gave me a big dog crate to try to put the goose in and
bring to her.
Within a few days, my mom and I went to the pond
with the crate and some food to catch Donald. After many
times of trying to persuade him into the crate, my mom
finally caught him and put him into it. I could tell
Donald was very frantic, but it was for a good cause.
My mom and I put the crate into the car and drove
to the vet’s office. Since the vet was there, she put
Donald into a long cage to run around in for a week or
two. Within that time, Donald was in good hands and was
fed a lot and treated well.
When the time came for Donald to be free again, my
mom, the vet, and I drove to this man’s estate nearby.
When we got there, we saw a couple of ponds and a lot of
property! It was lucky for Donald that the ponds had
bubbling machines inside of them to keep them moving
through the cold winter. That way, they won’t freeze over.
Well, Donald was put into a huge cage, half on
land, and half in water, with a few other geese. He would
stay there for a week so that he would get used to his
surroundings and not want to escape. He was lucky since
there were hundreds of other geese and a few ducks with
injuries that he would become friendly with!
All of this happened a few years ago. I hope that
Donald is happy where he lives right now. Today, I still
miss him, because he was my friend, and to him, I was his
mother.

Comments:Thank you for the site... I'm not finished reading it yet,
but I wanted you to know how important it is that there are
resources to help educate people about the Canada goose.

Something is happening to me that I must try to explain. I
currently live in a Canadian city with a large Canada goose
population. This city, Calgary, has an island park on the
Bow River that has a huge population of geese. Before this
year, I have never really paid attention to geese, Canada
or otherwise. Now, I find myself needing to go to this park
every few days for spiritual reconnecting to the world we
have all been ripped away from by years of "human progess."

On Thursday, I read about serious action being taking
against Canada geese populations in the Puget Sound area.
The article in the Seattle Times was not very clear on why
authorities want to destroy 3,500 intelligent creatures,
but they seem to be worried about the little inconveniences
left by the geese on golf courses, the Canada goose's
version of paradise. On Monday, a federal judge will decide
whether or not to allow the kill, which will then set a
precedent allowing other states planning massive geese-
kills to go forward. As I understand it, it used to be that
to adhere to the Migratory Bird Species Act (I think I got
that right) a municipality or other concern had to prove a
threat to public health before a kill could be allowed. I
do not know enough about these things yet to figure out
what loophole they are using, or why this even came to a
court case. I hope to use my skills to help various
protection groups in their mission to save geese.

I am 26 years of age. For a long time I have not known who
I wanted to be. I became a journalist in college but left
the profession when I realized I wasn't actually doing
anything important. For the past few years I have been
working as a news researcher for a firm that publishes
government telephone books. I know the ins and outs of the
structure of federal, state, and local government. I have
decent writing skills and strong observational skills. And,
I think something is coming over me, something that makes
we want to become an advocate for geese, ducks, beavers,
bears, cormorants, wild horses, all of these species that
we seem to destroy every time they become too much hassle.
It seems that we North Americans were not content
conquering the Natives who we stole the land from. It seems
that many people are hellbent on remaking this planet in
our image, eliminating as many animals as humanly possible.

I am a vegetarian. I became one for health reasons about a
year and a half ago. At the time, I did not think my
decision was political at all. I felt it was enough for me
to make my decision and live with it. But, I am not so sure
anymore. I am not so sure about remaining neutral when the
lives of so many birds will soon be cut short in order to
give hunters more targets, in order to satisfy the
bloodlust of people who never seemed to get over the love
of animal cruelty. The gigantic meat-slaughter-industrial
complex defends the destruction of these poor creatures,
lest too many carnivores find out that what they are eating
are sentient creatures capable of complexities that we can
only imagine.

I am also someone who looks at the current state of our
society with despair. We have lost our community by turning
ourselves into individual creatures trying to obtain as
many "shiny things" as we can. I sit in the park and I
watch the goslings being raised by creches, and I know
there are lessons there for us.

You are right. We are enslaved by civilization. We do not
have to be this way, and our feathered friends can help
teach us many lessons. We have to find ways to convince
folks to just sit a spell and become enraptured by these
creatures. We have to stop being so selfish, we have to
start raising each other up to our own potential. Just
imagine: the Canada goose travels majestically on land,
sea, and water. We have mastered the ability to do the same
thing, but with clunky machines that we end up overusing.

So, I hope that you continue to have this site up, because
I will be back to finish reading it. And I hope you will
pray with me that the judge will find it in her heart to
refuse the kill.

Thank you again.

Sean Tubbs

(apologize this is a bit long... writing about geese has
finally made me break a writer's block I have had for a
long, long time... I feel a connection to the creatures
here, and I look forward to a lifetime of discovering their
nuances)

Comments:We love our two Canadian wild geese.
On Easter Monday only one came back to our pond in front of
the house (built by a beaver)from the place where they spend
their nights, and we became very sad. We thought one may
have been shot by an idiot hunter. Today we saw them both
together again back in our pond eating the corn on the bank,
which we lay out for them every day. We are happy now again.
They are probably building a nest or nesting somehwere near
by for now and are only coming back to say 'HELLO'.They may
have sensed our concern for them the day before, and wanted
to reassure us that they were both fine and healthy still.
The other animals and birds that live in and around our pond
sensed our sorrow also that evening, for they all come so
close to us and put on their little animal shows for us,
trying to cheer us up. It was so amazing.
They are our friends. Beautiful birds and animals.

Comments:What a neat site - I finally had my question of how to tell
a male from a female answered by Branta. I too am a great
fan of the Canada geese - for several years I have been
feeding them cracked corn at my significant other's farm
where he has a large pond. I have enjoyed watching several
families being hatched and raised and marvel at the
protectiveness of these beautiful creatures. Getting back to
the distinction between male and female - From my
observation, I think the male has a longer neck than the
female. Your comments would be appreciated. Keep up the
good work - I have already bookmarked the site.

Comments:Great WebSite, Goose fans!I grew up and now once again live
on a N/S fly-way. That high, wild, stirring sound as the
first V's fly over or stop be the local swamp is enough to
move me to tears year after year. Your site is most
informative and I love the Goose Lessons. I read a book
once titled "Honking From Behind" comparing a church
congregation to Geese in migration. Great Book. It had all
those goose lessons in it and maybe even more. They surely
do contain lesson for daily life and team effort. Love Mary

Comments:Hi,

I just wanted to sign in here. I started looking up geese
info because of my new visitors to my place out here. I
live on the Southern Oregon Coast on a beautiful lake with
boat access only. Last spring I had a pair of Branta
canadensis occidentalis arrive and set up shop at the end
of a log that floats in front of my dock, but they
abandoned the nest shortly after she laid her eggs. I
thought it was just a fluke but they are back again this
year and mamma has settled in for the duration it seems.
After a week now she has become pretty used to my comings
and goings, so I hope she came hatch another batch.

I have become facinated with these new friends of mine. I
end up down on the dock watching them as they go about
their day. I'm sure they are not nearly as interested in
me as I am in them. lol lol. They really are the best
neighbors a hermit can have.

Comments:I came here to get some pictures of geese for a school
project, but I ended up reading and learning a lot more
about Canadian Geese then I could ever imagine. I enjoyed
learning the Geese Lessons and reading about the Coalition.
I think it's so sad that geese aren't given even chances.
Life of all kinds was created for a reason, and the future
might lead to more of an understanding about how we should
live together with nature in peace. Keep this updated --
it's a great information site! Thanks!

Comments:You have an error on your photo gallery page. Only a few
people use only the breast meat from geese. Others use the
entire bird. I pluck mine and feed the entire family on one
bird. We have no shortage of geese here in Kansas and
their numbers keep increasing, so taking a few for the
table each year does no damage to the species.

Comments:Hello

I just found you guys. I keep an eye out for Canada's in
distress. I saved 5 Canada's this season. It's
-50C here in Kanata, Ont. and we have 4 or 5 in a pond with
some open water. I and others stop by and feed them daily.
They seem to be holding up well although it's absolutely
bone chilling outside. I stopped by tonight to feed them and
they seem to be doing well considering the cold.

I'll keep feeding them and learning more about them. Does
anyone know of any other informative Canada sites?

Take care.

Comments:Great site! I enjoyed the commentary, and it helped me to
get started on my research project. I love Canada Geese,
but there is a definite problem up here (in Anchorage,
Alaska). Unfortunatly, these birds pose a significant
danger to all aircraft. I've been researching with others
to find a strain of grass the geese don't like (to keep them
away from critical areas). If we find something, lethal
measures may not be needed. I will let you know if we have
a breakthrough!

Comments:Great site. I have always loved the Canada Goose. There is
nothing that thrills me as much as hearing the honking of a
flock as it flys over. It doesn't matter if it's spring or
fall. We have a nature center near here which is a stop over
for thousands of geese. It is an amazing sight. I applaud
your efforts to protect the geese.

I'll be back!!!

'Human Induced Changes on the Migratory Patterns of the

I understand that loss of wetland habitat does indeed
influence the geese, but what of the direct changes of the
migratory patterns. Can anyone else out there help me?
