| Comments: | Hello,
I love your diary of birds. I have just started my own diary. We hatched 5 out of 6 eggs last Monday, Yolko, Shelly, Eggburt, Crash and Eddie. I may be 35 but it does not stop me from enjoying the classic movies! We had a close call on the Tuesday after they hatched, Crash took longer to hatch than all the others and was very listless when we moved them to the brooder. She was dry and fluffy but her head kept dropping. I cuddled her for ages to keep her nice and warm and gave her some sugar water. I put her under the brooder and to my astonishment she was out trying to feed with the others after 40 mins. It took her a day to regain her full strength, but I watched her closly and new when she was having an off moment as when I was pecking at the ground showing them how to eat she would poke her head between my thumb and forefinger and try to curl up im my hand. She is so sweet. I was shocked at how fast they grow, they are only a week old today and they are running from one end to the other, flapping their little wings, getting ready for take off! When we cleaned them out yesterday, Eddie which I think is the rooster (as the has much more prounounced feathers and always leads the others), flew up from the floor onto my lap to see if I had food in my hand. They are awsom pets and its great to talk to people that love them too. Take care, Ems. |

| Comments: | We have a six year old son who wanted chickens from the local farm store around Easter. We started out with two (Flip and Flop). The neighbors dog killed Flop so we contacted a friend and got two more chickens (Pork and Bean). I was searching to find out what sex Flip might be and your site reassured me that we will just have to wait and see. Our son is patiently waiting for his first egg. We got the chickens as a type of responsibility for him. I also learned that we should be feeding them in the evening instead of in the morning. Thanks for all of the helpful information. |

| Comments: | Your site is very attractive and informative. I have started with chickens this year... I bought from a flea market because right now that is the only place beside the auction that i know of... but if I lose my chickens while I learn, I plan to start out with baby chicks next year so I will have all from the same source.. I started with juvilies and bought a couple of bantams pairs... The crowing is really nice all day. and my little juvilies are ready to jump into my arm every day... (when they are grown this might be a problem). sites like yours teaches me how to do it... and I too am trying to learn how to have chicks without predators attacking... been lucky so far for someone who lives in the woods away from other homes... with lots of raccoons, possums, foxes and dogs... thank you again ura |

| Comments: | Hello
A friend of mine suggested I check out your site. He said he learned all he needed to know from your site. The wife wanted gunies for the ticks, she asked if I wanted her to pick up any chickens. Weak moment. I ask for a straight run and 3 Turkeys. I never believed she would find Turkeys. She came home with 3 Turkeys 1 straight run of chickens and 4 gunies. After the cats and coons, we got down to 2 turkeys, 1 gunie,11 chickens. So at the of the chick season looking for wire. We now have 55 chickens. I built a coop, fenced yard, and Turkey pin. 15 long 10 high 10 wide, inclosed. Have a blessed day. |

| Comments: | Hi, I was looking for answers to my questions and came upon your site. Here's a funny story for you...3 months ago a chicken came into my yard.(I live in town) Don't know where it came from, but anyway, she stayed around in a tree I have that has brush around the bottom and lots of weeds & bushes at the base for her to nest in. To my dismay, after a month of her staying around, I decided to feed her & keep water out for her since it was getting warm out. After 2 months of sticking around, she disappeared. I thought she must of been eaten by some fox I have seen come in town. 2-3 weeks later, here she is again!!! So I go out with some more feed & water for her, and to my surprise....she has a baby chick!!! How can this be? There are no roosters around here! Do you think that a chicken can carry sperm in her for several months? I am AMAZED & CONFUSED! What do you think? PS: We live on the edge of town, near a river & I have thought about raising chickens for eggs, etc. When this one showed up & has stuck around, I am wondering if this is a sign from God to go ahead, DO IT. :~) Lisa |

They have laid nice eggs I feed them egg laying food and some oster feed mixed up in their feed. My question is I thought a couple of the hens were wanting to lay so they can have chicks when I go to pick up eggs every day some times there are a couple hens laying their and don't move so I leave them alone but then the next day they are not on the eggs how do I tell when not to pick eggs up I would like chicks and is there a period of time when they decide they want to have chicks I don't want to pick eggs up if she is trying to hatch chicks please can you give me more detailed info on when and when not to pick up eggs? Thank you much for your time

| Comments: | I love your website! The way you talk about your chickens reminds me of how my children feel about ours. Currently we have 5 hens that are 18 months old, 7 hens that are 6 months old (we call them Middle Schoolers), 2 pullets & 1 rooster about 3 months old. We had a stray dog kill one baby and 2 of the 6 mts a few weeks ago & it was very sad for the kids. We keep ours in the coops when we are gone & at night but let them out to roam the yard for several hours during the day. Our dog has also grown up around them and pays them no mind. We live in NC so don't have to worry as much about the winterizing but we do keep a heat lamp in their roosting area & wrap part of their coop in a tarp to keep out the wind. It was funny watching them in the snow the couple of times we had it! You are very right in that keeping chickens is thoroughly entertaining & also a good method for teaching care & responsibility to children. They have to feed, water, collect eggs & clean out the coops & they learn about the cycle of life. Plus, we sell our eggs & use the money to buy their lunches for school. It's another lesson in economics! |
