Comments:Did Grace Maddy get much response to herqueries about Jim Gilbert (1933-1995), the giant criminal and artist who featured in Mike Connor's TVS documentary 'Portrait of an Artist' in the winter of 1974?
I am trying to trace the documentary itself.
I knew Jim when I was a BBC Radio reporter and covered the story of his release from Parkhurst in 1974. I have since bought a number of his paintings.

Comments:I loved Southern Television. Freewheelers was my favourite adventure series of all time, till Primeval came along, and the similarity in style - albeit-updated - appeals to me greatly. I lived in Chandler's Ford, just north of Southampton, so the children's serials and other output from Southern felt very local. My Dad was an extra in 2 of the Freewheelers series, playing a scientist and helping the baddies on both occasions, the rotter! On one day, as a 12 year old, I got to accompany Dad on location near Farley Mount. The memories still thrill me! Operation Patch and Brenndon Chase are among my other favourites. I miss it all to this day. The extinction of that TV company is a huge loss to all of us who remember the great days of 'gentle' television. If anyone has any moemories they would like to share, please email me at the above address.

Memories of the 1970s and early 1980s when on holiday in the Southern tv area.
It was such a shame when the IBA took away Southern's licence and gave it to TVS I felt-but TVS then had the same occur to them when the contract was awarded to Meridian tv in 1993!
Also, in Southern's day, television seemed so much better than the pap that ITV1 churns out today (or any other channel come to that), don't you feel?
Thanks once more for a great website-well done to all concerned.

One big question about theme music, back in the early sixties Southern had a Sunday farming programme called "Farm In The South" can anyone tell me what the theme music was? I also heard in some other programmes as incidental music, so it could be library music. But can someone please help? It has haunted me for years and although people say it is familiar when I hum it nobody can name it. Thank you in anticipation.

With little funding they balanced commercial revenue with broadcasting high values and broadcasting principles. Can you watch a symphony concert on ITV these days? I wouldn’t know because I no long watch ITV. Although I am not a country person; the talent of Jack Hargreaves made all of his programmes interesting. ITV has sunk to the lowest common denominator. The best source of real TV now is the Internet where dedicated producers can air excellent documentaries that the main television companies will not show.

Comments:TVS, Southern Television and even Meridian are all sorely missed.

Charles Allen started the ball rolling and Michael Grade and Michael Jeremy have continued destroying a once great regional broadcaster, and OFCOM don't seem to have any authority to stop them.

ITV is too London-centric and doesn't fairly represent the rest of the country in any way shape or form anymore. Think back to before 1990 and all of this was different.

Local news isn't reported as they simply don't have the journalists as they've laid them all off, continuity comes from London, regional programmes have been cut and if it doesn't feature a celebrity phone vote it doesn''t see the light of day.

On a personal level, when I was growing up I always imagine i'd work as a producer or continuity announcer or something as Yorkshire Television (my local ITV company) what are the chances of a job now? Bugger all.

ITV is a complete sham: FACT!

Comments:Thank you to the recent posting which alerted me to the release of the wonderful Southern Television drama "Midnight Is A Place".
I have fond memories of my work experience time at the Southern Television centre in the spring of 1977 during which time I was lucky enough to slip into the studio to see part of the recording of "Midnight Is A Place": they had recreated the big carpet press in the huge studio 1. What a buzz to see all those dedicated and highly skilled technicians at work. The studio centre certainly had a great sense of working together; it was a total pleasure to be a very small part of it for a short time. I remember the transmission of the 13 parter that took us up to the Christmas period of 1977 - sitting at home and watching scenes that i had seen recorded in the studion earlier that same year in April!

You may be interested to know that other great Southern productions are, at long last, coming onto the dvd market. I have just visited Play.com and ordered series 1 & 2 of "Spearhead"; "Caesar & Cleopatra" starring Alec Guinness, and "A House In Regent Place" - a forgotten gem from 1974 where the house itself becomes the running thread through four individual plays depicting the property through various periods of the 20th century.

I only hope that this means we will soon be able to enjoy some of the splendid work Southern Television did in children's drama for the network. How about John Lucarotti's "Operation Patch"?

How sad those old Southern studios are now being bulldozed to make way for apartments.

Long may the memories of this truy great regional broadcaster linger on: television was never the same in southern England after December 1981.

Comments:Hi,

Still love dipping into this site from time to time - happy memories of Southern and TVS - always keen to see more archive video or documents.

Chris - that sitcom with John Inman and Rula Lenska was "Take a Letter Mr Jones" - I've been lucky enough to see it recently - not great, but funny enough and had that "Southern TV" feel to it. Sadly not released yet though.

Jo - Good news, Midnight Is A Place is being released on DVD in a fortnight - a company (I think called Simply Entertainment) is releasing it, and also considering several more Southern TV series that are still in existance - the DVD can be seen here (apologies for the link, but it's in the name of Southern shows - hopefully more will be released if they sell loads!:-

Comments:Oh what memories! Watching Meridian's report on 50 years of southern television led me to this wonderful site.

As a child I lived in ATV Land, but have very fond memories of 'How' (I'm sure I had a childhood crush on Bunty!) and 'Runaround'. I seem to remember too a comedy series rushed into the ITV Saturday Night schedules, made by Southern, prior to their demise. It starred Rula Lenska as a businesswoman with John Inman as her secretary.

In my university days in Anglia, I caught sight of a TVS afternoon show, 'Not For Women Only', and an evening science/technology show 'The Real World' introduced by Michael Rodd (formerly of 'Screen Test' fame).

When, in 1989, I moved down to Surrey, I was pleased to be able to share TVS's final years. 'Coast to Coast' had a sense of genuine warmth about it, and in 'The Ruth Rendell Mysteries' we had, what I belive, to still be the best TV detective series ever made.

I lament, along with many of your other contributors, the passing of regional television; the earier days of Meridian autonomy, giving way to the modern corporate era of ITV1. It seems that all that's left are regional news programmes, and 30 minute documentaries scheduled against 'Eastenders'! Thank goodness for your website!

Comments:Many thanks for a step back in time. I have now read the recent entries of this guestbook with some dismay. How can someone legally own another's property ? I am of course referring to this TVS upstart up north. I have been in business all my life and cannot understand how someone thinks that just because they have bought the original company name of a lapsed company that they suddenly own a copyright or determination of an identity previously used. From my experience of lapsed companies following take-overs, the intellectual right of a brand moves on, it doesn’t die with a company listing at companies house. For instance Beecham's powders was made by the original Beecham's company many years ago, now they are made by Smithkline Glaxo which came about of the merger of Glaxo Wellcome and Smithkline Beecham. Smithkline Beckman and Beecham’s formed Smithkline Beecham in the late 80’s. Perhaps we can all run off now and buy a company with the name Beecham and market Beecham powders, I think not! The final gauling is when you look at this upstarts website is that they now state that they own the logo device and will protect its use, what a load of crap ! Are they going to pursue the satellite channel that inadvertently shows their logo before a re-run of Fraggle rock ?

I think you will find that on your orginal website your front pages had a statement something like...."Television South is back, you may rememeber us the first time around" and so on, Then when I saw your MD's post it got me mad!

Good luck with the new TVS, I wish you well. Let hope that the owners of this site update it soon and you can all work together to keep the name Television South alive.

Comments:TVS is the brand and company name we have purchased. The logo device is registered to us with the Trade Mark and Patents Office and is 100% legit.

We have never suggested or hinted to "claim the achievements of the original organisation".

Mr Cottam in relation to your post - maybe Rachel could have phrased it a different way, but what she was trying to say was that the logo and brand name is back, rather than the original company. And there's no "so-called" about it - she is the managing director. We don't assume to own the past and we have no rights over the archive.

James - we had the flash files made for us by Dave Jeffery and we've never clamied to have a multi-million pound facility or studio complex.

The company itself is based in the north at the moment due to personal reasons but will be relocating back to the south east in the very near future.

If you have any questions then email me or Rachel and we'll be glad to help you out and answer your questions. We'd like to assist with any TVS/British Television history related websites.

Comments:I have read the comments re TVS being back and I must say I agree. Its strange that ex BBC and ITV staff go freelance then register an old company and claim the achievements of the original organisation.

TVS is not back thats for sure, and this website I hope will reflect the history of the true ITV companies in the south. I think the owners of this site need to come back and relaunch it and finish off the TVS pages.

I wonder if these people who use the TVS name and logo have really got clearance from Walt Disney to do so!!

I hope this site is here for many years to come.

Comments:The comment from the so called 'managing director'!! of the new TVS Ltd saying that TVS is back is so patronising, they restister a name from companies house and assume they own the past of TVS and all its achivements. I wonder if this new company has really purchased the rights to use the TVS logo from the Walt Disney corporation?

Maybe I'll set up a company called TVS Entertainment Ltd and use the 1990's logo for my DVD dropshipping enterprises.

I say to the owners of ITV Southern England, come back and re launch this site, there is so much more to do and the Meridian pages need updating too.

This site is well loved please make sure it continues to be an informative historic log of the orginal Southern TV, TVS and Meridian companies.

Comments:I totally agree with the previous post, these people have simply been able to register the name tvs televsion at companies house because the orginal has lapsed and then assume they own the past of TVS. They even have the gaul to rip off this sites flash files for there own gain, shame on you !

Try their post code on google earth, looks like an ordinary estate house to me let alone a multi million pound television facility, very sad when you call your semi " Television House " Long live Southern and TVS in the south.

Comments:The comment below states TVS is Back............well its not back as we knew it! Someone who works in media has registered the name TVS Television Ltd and is using the logo! How can Television South be based in Leeds, West Yorkshire??? Can I ask does the new company own the final version of the logo aired in late 1980's and early 1990's.

Also people maybe interested to know that the TVS programme archive is now owned by Walt Disney, through buying Fox pictures.

The real TVS will live in on in our memories as a great ITV Company whom produced fine programme for the network and this website will represent that era of the original company.

Thanks

It's first project is set to be a behind the scenes look at the old ATV Centre in Birmingham... with perhaps a view to covering others if the idea works and is well received.

Southern was a most remarkable franchise operator, and the programmes they produced and the people involved have become part of the (older) people of Kent and Sussex's mental maps (I still find myself calling ITV, Southern!)
Why not contact Fred Dineage - who is the face of ITV in the South and South East - and who has managed to survive two frnachise changes and is still working for the local Meridian news programme in Southampton? I'm sure he'd love to start the ball rolling

Comments:what a lovely channel southern was. it represented a more gentle age of TV broadcasting. the logo is timeless and im sure Southern is missed. it was such a pleasant jingle too which went with it. i myself am a huge ATV (midlands) fan and know that ITV in general is much poorer without its regional stations. the closure of these stations was in my opinion the beginning of the end for itv.

im so glad to see southern's memory being kept alive on the web. long may it continue.

Now I know you'll say I should get out more, and perhaps get a new anorak, but did you also notice that the logo was not accurate? You would have thought the production team responsible might have paid a little more attention to detail in order to recreate the logo faithfully!

Comments:Just thought I'd say, why did TVS think it was necessary to have two ever-so-slightly different versions of their original ident (New Forest, 1982-87) for weekdays and weekends?

I did not grow up with TVS, but remember that particular ident before their programmes were shown on ITV, and as I remember the shell (if that's what it was) always spun, as it did on the "weekend" ident. And it wasn't all that different an ident from Southern, still a rather simple animation and jingle!

Any views?

Comments:Russ,

In answer to your question regarding the final Southern Television broadcast "And It's Goodbye From Us", I hope the following will be of help, and, indeed, is correct (if not I do apologise, and hope someone will correct me).

I believe the main body of the programme was recoded on 30th December 1981, the day before transmission, in Southern's main stage; Studio 1.

Continuity was normally presented from their presentation studio; Studio 4, but on that evening, all the clips featuring Chris Robbie sat behind the desk (with the metallic looking monolith featuring the Southern Star) were played in live from Studio 3, the permanent home of "Day By Day" which had earlier transmitted their final, live edition entitled "Day By Yesterday".

Comments:Does anyone know on the Southern finale, It's Goodbye From Us, if the in vision continuity by Christopher Robbie insert within the second half of the programme featuring his toast to 1982 and a couple of others was pre recorded like the rest of the show or actually live on the night?

Comments:Was very fortunate to attend the farewell party @ Northam studios just before Christmas. A huge rollercoaster of emotions and a delight to see so many faces. Two things will remain with me so strongly from the evening- firstly, the enormous pride felt by so many former Southern Television employees; and secondly, the huge sense of sadness felt by many of them to this day that Southern lost their franchise.

Now, whether you share those sentiments or not, you have to agree- it is quite something when a company can generate such feeling so many years after it closed down. As one gentleman said to me: "one never looked at the clock to see if it was time to go home at the end of the day. It was such a pleasure to work at Southern".

Wow, what a company. Thankyou Southern.

Comments:A fantastic site; keep up the good work. It's greatly appreciated. It's so sad that the professional feel of Southern and TVS, and earlier Meridian, seems to have been lost, and that it's now acceptable to shoot some of the news (and the odd ITV drama, I notice - anyone see Making Waves?!) on MiniDv cameras. The PC has taken over from dedicated dubbing mixers and editors. Four-person crews are down to one solitary VJ. And the vast array of superb programming doesn't exist anymore.

At least we can visit the memories on-line. So much stuff from my childhood that I'd forgotten about. I watched Hey Look That's Me being filmed in Brighton where Chris Harris went down into the sewers in the late seventies, and On Safari in 1982 at the studios. I've had the good fortune to work at the studios a couple of times; a wonderful atmosphere, surrounded by people who actually cared about what they were doing, and made sure they got it right!

Do take a look at The Dream Factory book if you get the chance; I bought it the other day. A very enjoyable read that brought the odd tear!

Comments:The home of Southern Television from 1958, the Northam studio complex currently operated by Meridian is to close shortly. Meridian are moving to new digital studios outside of Southampton. To mark this event The Southern Daily Echo in Southampton have produced a beautiful 132 page book entitled "The Dream Factory". It is a nostalgic romp through 46 years of television production recalling wonderful memories from programmes and personalities. Richly illustrated, the book costs £10.00 plus postage. If you would like to order a copy, please feel free to email me. The book is a limited edition, so get one quick before they are gone. It will be available from late November, but I am afraid it will only be available on a FIRST COME-FIRST SERVED basis. Please don't have a go at me if you miss out! I hope you will understand and appreciate that this is a hugely costly exercise, and to over print and have spare copies lying around is just not an option for us.

I hope you will enjoy this look back to the days of Jack Hargreaves' "Out Of Town", "Day By Day", "Worzel Gummidge", "How", "Runaround" and "Houseparty", before we come right up to date with a look at the future of Meridian as they enter a new era of broadcasting in the south.

To purchase your copy log on to www.thisissouthampton.co.uk and click on the link. Remember that you will incur a postage and packing fee.

Comments:Sorry this is extremely short notice, but does anybody have 5 minutes spare this evening to email me their memories of Southern Television? Especially if you visited the studio centre, or perhaps you worked there. The local paper in Southampton, The Southern Daily Echo, is preparing a book looking back at the days of Southern TV and would be keen, where space is available, to include memories of the station. The paper does not guarantee to include the comments as much space is already taken up with various other items.
I said this is short notice- I need the comments by Friday 8th October, 9.00am. Sorry about that.
Thankyou,
Paul

Comments: If there is any one who remembers a 30 minute documentary around 1973-74 titled 'PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST'. It was a piece about an artist named Jim Gilbert. It was directed by Mike Conner (married at the time to Annie)and filmed around the Southampton area. We are in the stages of writing a book on the life of Jim Gilbert and we would appreciate any one with any information to get in touch with us at the above e-mail address.Thank you.
