Nd'elewigi Garry. Nia ojhila Long Beach, CA. USA. My first visit to the Algonquin first nation of Barriere Lake was in August of 2002. My two boys and I came to fish, and while at the Cabonga Resevoir we met Mr. Cory Jerome the constable. I sent about 300 #s of baseball equipment in 2004 to help the girls and boys with baseball. At the time, I spoke with a younger policeman than Cory. He wanted me to send instructions on how to build a baseball field. I never go that done, but I would like to know who the young man was. Now I am working on organizing a nonprofit corporation in hopes that we can help in a more meaningful way. I will ask the leasers at Barriere Lake if I can come in about 2 years. I will have informed them more fully by then on what the nonprofit hopes to accomplish. |

| Comments: | what an interesting sight - and so many familiar names. My grandmother Jennie (Aird) Higgins married a non-native and lived in Ottawa. She always kept a cottage in Ruby (near Killaloe) and unfortunately drowned while fishing on Oct. 25, 1954. I've managed to get back to Golden Lake almost every year since moving to Cleveland, Ohio in 1959. |

| Comments: | Hi I am looking for my native roots. I am looking for some assistance in this venture.
In 1901, (G) Octave Frappier was 27 years old. He was still single & lived with his Dad, (GG) Theodore Frappier who was 51 years old & his Mom (GG) Rosalie Frappier who was 48 years old. Also in the household was probably Rosalie's little Brother Oscar Despatis who was 6 years old & listed as a student. A few houses away lived Rosalie's parents, (GGG) Louis Despatis who was 77 years old, & (GGG) Cleophee Despatis who was 78 years old. Between these 2 households lived (G) Octave Frappier's younger Sister, Georgiana Bazinet who was 23 years old & married to Maurice Bazinet, 22 years old. They had a Son Theodore who was only 5 months old. Keep in mind that (GGG) Louis Despatis's name showed up in Madeleine's research as Louis Forget & Cleophee as Marie Cleophee Tremblay & their Daughter as Rosalie Forget-Despatie-Latour & I think that in those days, the Church changed a lot of native names when they baptized them. I phoned Daniel Fortier today to ask him if he had any more info on these ancestors. He was so excited because he had given up on his research & did not know about Louis & Cleophee. I've sent him the link to the genealogy site & the copy of Madeleine's research & gave him all my research. He said that the name Despatis may have been invented to mean "des partis indien" & that names in our ancestry seem to come up as Forget dit Despatis, sometimes spelled Despatie or Depati, etc......(Dit probably stands for demi-indien) These 3 households were in the District of Russell, Sub-District of Rockland, Ontario, just across the Ottawa River from the Petite Nation Valley & St Andre Avellin. Now that's where (GG) Theodore & (GG) Rosalie were married when they were 21 & 18 years old & they must have lived there in Quebec for a while. That's where their Son (G) Octave was born when she was 21 year old. By 1911, (GG) Rosalie's parents (GGG) Louis & Cleophee are no longer living in Rockland so they may have died by then. They would have been 88 & 87 so that's quite likely. Oscar who is now 16 years old is living with (GG) Rosalie & (GG) Theodore & he is now listed as adopted. (GG) Octave's Sister Georgiana Bazinet & her husband, Maurice Bazinet are also living with them but their first Son, Theodore is not mentioned so must have died. They have a new Son named Maurice who is 9 years old In the same village of Rockland, (G) Octave Frappier lives with his wife (G) Eleonor Pitre. He's 35 by now & she's 31. They have 3 Daughters, Simone, 5 years old, Laurette, 4, & Cecile, almost 2. There are many discrepancies in the spelling of these names from one Census to another. Rosalie is changed to Roselie, Theodore to Tador, Despatis to Depatie, Cecile to Cecil , etc. A few birthdates differ also but all in all, meet your ancestors! Here are all their names & birthdates for your records. Hope you enjoyed my research! The best part is that I found most of this info on Mom's Birthday, July 22 - she probably has learnt some computer skills up there & was guiding me!!!!!!! (GGG) Louis Despatis Dec 18, 1824 (GGG) Cleophee Tremblay Feb 7, 1823 (GG) Theodore Frappier March 3,1850 (GG) Rosalie Forget-Despatie-Latour April 25,1853 (G) Octave Frappier Feb 28, 1874 (Sister, Georgiana July 22, 1877) (G) Eleonore Pitre Feb 11, 1878 Dad Dorima Fortier Jan 28, 1908 Mom Cecile Frappier Jul 22 1909 Me -Marie Colette Eleonore Fortier Sept 16 1944 Alistair James Brown 1946 My two sons Ian Brown 1968 David Brown 1970 I'll keep you updated, Let me know what you think about this! |

It's wonderful to see the Algonquin language preserved. I am an historical researcher and am currently looking for the Algonguin translation of several place names in the Ottawa/Gatineau area. So far I've found a few but would like verification that my translaation is correct. Would it be possible for someone to check on them for me? Algonquin name - Meaning Maniwaki - Mary's place. Paugin - vale of water Kazabaua- hidden/disappearing water/land above the water. Quebec - where the water narrows Are the names Larimac and Venosta Algonquin words? If they are do you know what they mean? Keep up the good work.Your site is marvelous. One of our ancestors married an Algonquin and another married a Huron. So we always felt a strong kinship to our First Nations people. Thank you for any assistance that you can give me. | Comments: | Hi, it is nice to see those birch bark canoes that have been and are still buid at Golden Lake First Nations. Also it is interesting to read how you manage the harvest's of Moose, Deer and Fish. And it is great that you are teaching the Algonquin language to young and old. It is so sad what has been done many years ago in this regard by the governments of that time. Good to see too that the young people become more interested in their age old culture.

| Comments: | I live in Haliburton and am most interested in the original names of our lakes in the Algonquin language. The only major lake in Haliburton which still has its Algonquin name appears to be Kashagawigamog. This, some years ago, was translated as “long winding water.” However, I am very sceptical about this translation. I would appreciate receiving a modern translation of Kashagawigamog as well as an explanation of why all of the Algonquin names for lakes appear to end in “mog”. I have assumed for some time that “mog” was water, but I now understand that this is not the case. Any help I receive in this matter will be most appreciated. |

| Name: | John F. Willcutts |
| E-mail address: | John_Willcutts@hotmail.com |
| Comments: | I recently discovered my family is descended from John Wolcott (born 1696) who was captured as a boy of 12-14 years by Algonquin Indians when his horse was shot dead by them around 1705 to 1710. He was raised by the tribe in Canada and then tried to assimilate back into white community around 1725, with much reluctance. He was reported to have had a son John through wife Dinah in Brookfield, MA, but was then reported to have been "killed" by Indians while Dinal was pregnant before the child was born in 1728. This was actually probably a story told to avoid the embarrassment of John supposed "abondaning his wife, Dinah. According to DNA test i am mot related to Dinah, and it's not completely clear that the child was his and he wasn't being forced into a marriage with Dinah against his Alginquin Will. Apparently John went back to live with the Algonquins and married an Algonquin maiden and later had a son Joesph by her. It seems that Joseph may have also lived with the tribe and had at least two sons, Thomas Willcutts, and Reuben Wolcott. According to DNA tests there is a "missing link" between John Wolcott who was supposedly killed by Indians, and Thomas Willcutts who ended up illiterate in North Carolina. The best explanation concering this missing link seems to be one or two generations of Algonquin ancestry unique to the Wolcott/Willcutts/Walcott Family Tree. Apparently, Thomas the eldest son, was illiterate and may have been a child to Joseph and an Algonquin wife, as well. There is no documentation in the family on Joseph only that he was father to Reuben in a mysterious distant manner accoridng to family lore, while Thomas seemed to arrive in North Carolina, Piney Grove near Greensboro, out of nowhere being illiterate and ending up a Quaker friendly in a peaceful relationship with Indians I.e. Cherokee, etc.). Thomas, like other Quakers, hated slavery and refused to live around it, moving his family to Indiana some time before the Civil War probably during the 1820's - 1830's. The most obvious evidence of one or even two generations of Wolcotts/Willcutts living amongst the Algonquins is the facial charateristics and skin tone of family members. My youngest sister has been "mistaken" for an Algonquin Indian. Maybe there is actually a certain amount of truth to all this. The strange thing that i have noticed as John Willcutts, descendant of John Wolcott, who was captured by the Algonquins and returned to live with them as adults, is a spiritual connection or oneness with the Algonquins i am finding way too obvious in my heart to ignore. Much of my stubborn personal philosophy and principles of life are very consistent with not only a native peoples' point of view, but more specifically an Algonquin persective of life and the Creator, etc.
i am completely blessed by the Algonquin people and i pray the Great Spirit will allow me to be closer to them one day soon and celebrate the coming of the Great White Buffalo!! ;^) With Love Peace and Respect john Work/weedays: (706) 546-2089 Home/nights&weekends: (706) 850-0011 P.O. | Comments: | Greetings.
I live in east central Wisconsin where I run a local youth center and coach for the area HS/MS. As politically incorrect as it may be, our mascot is the "Indians" primarily because our area was once home to the Mascoutin. I am contacting you to see if you can help me. In two days I am hosting a gathering of all the student-athletes in the area. At this event -- just prior to the start of the school year -- I hope to turn the kids' attention towards the idea of QUTTIANUM (the Algonquin word for HONOR). My hope is to be able to share with them a little about what it meant to the Native Americans who once lived here...and use that idea/theme to challenge them to approach the upcoming year with a newfound resolve to be better students and citizens. I also hope to take this opportunity to get some of them to see our mascot in a different light by sharing about the reality of the Mascoutin. Could you PLEASE be of assistance? Here's what I'd need from you (SOON if possible): • A phonetic pronunciation of the word QUTTIANUM. • Any background of what "HONOR" may have meant to people like the Mascoutin. • Any links you may have which may assist me. This is vitally important to me and, I believe, to the young people of our area. I've done some research but your assistance would be a HUGE help. |

| Comments: | What a great idea! I am interested in finding out more about my mom's family. My mother's name was Jacqueline (Jackie) and she had a sister named Olive. Her father was from Golden Lake, Patrick James Aird. He married Maude Gertrude McKinnon. He had a sister named Sarah who married Jim Lavalee. I remember sitting in the kitchen at Jim and my Aunt Sarah's house on the reserve and the old house was also still standing on the property. Sarah made the most beautiful mocassins. She also had a very interesting life, cooking for some very famous people. I think that Sarah and my grandfather Patrick might also have had brothers named Dickson and Alec or Alex. If anyone knows of the people I am refering to, please contact me.
Thank you Leslie G. |

| Comments: | Thank you. I have always wanted to learn more about the Algonquin language. Great web site. My father's dream was to open a museum to teach people more about the Native American Indians and their culture. Now in it's 32 year the Institute for American Indian Studies (known earlier as American Indian Archeological Instituite) in Washington, Connecticut, has helped people understand more about our history. Let us all help others understand.
Thanks again, Ted |

We recently found out our maternal grandmother was algonquin. After doing some reaserch on that tribe I think brobably ( Cachesipinini ). Now I understand the reason for this love afaire I've had with the Ottawa river all my life. Also three years ago I bought property on Fraser island wich is part of les iles aux Alumettes. I am now trying to learn Algonquin. HELP! meegwetch |

| Comments: | My name is Judith Ann (Berry) Buck.
My Great-Great grand father was Amable Beaudry. And from the information I have gathered, he married Catherine Ellen Stoqua approximately January 19, 1852 at Chapeau Pontiac County Quebec. My research also tells me that her parents were Joseph Stoqua and Barbara Aquaiock and were members of the Algonquin Nation. If you have any information about these two people, please let me know. Additionally, on the maternal family side, my father's mother's mother was Mary Ellen Leronde. Her mother was Mary Ann Stoqua. Are Catherine and Mary ann related? Are we perhaps related? I look foprward to your response! Judy Buck |
