She was a good ship with a good crew. She was used in the atomic test and decommissioned 6 August 1946, and upon the completion of the test she was towed to Kwajalein for study. There she was sunk by Toledo (CA-133) 19 April 1948. I'm 82 and still going strong. GOD bless all our service personal. |

Then we made landings with the LCVP's from the ship along the coast. I was a radioman on shipboard until we were to make a landing, like Iwo Jima. The Carteret was one of the over 500 ships in that campaign. Then we were at the initial landing at Okinawa. I could go on about the Carteret with Lt. Cmdr. John Hunter as the Captain. I opened it up and there it said Erling Thornes worked for Moore Mc Cormack Lines for 25 yrs. Yes, he is my Dad, and he went to be with the Lord when he was 77. How I loved the ships, and once went around the coast with one of the ships. I remember the Scan...ships. I loved the engine room, the rusticness of the ships. I was born with sea legs, and also worked 4 trips on the SS Brasil. I loved it...being out on the ocean and so close to my God. My Father made a scale model of the Flying Cloud before he left us, and it was sold, and now it is up for sale again. We would like to buy it, but probably don't have the cash for it. My Mom sold it under pressure when Pop Pop died. What a wonderful man, and Father! He was so special. I just did a print out of the SS Brazil, and saw the name Harry N Sadler who was the Master. Can't remember if it was when Daddy was Chief Engineer or when I sailed with them. My sister has all the albums, and I will write her and ask her if she has any shots of PopPop on the ships. Will keep in touch. Evelyn (Thornes) Ricker. I and my husband are missionaries in Guatemala. Good talking to you about my favorite subject. |

being converted for the Navy. I'm sure they crossed paths as he left the ship in San Francisco in 1943. My dad was Jim Thomasson and was called to duty with the St. Louis crew. He passed away this February but I'm sure they're somewhere telling seastories. Bob Thomasson |

I was not old enough for WWII. I was 5 years old when Hitler marched into Poland in 1939 but I can remember the radio announcements of that attack. My mother had two brothers who served throughout the war and both were wounded. They were my heroes. I look up to those who served as an example of what people can sacrifice for their country. I served in the USAF for 21 years and flew 50 combat missions as a B-26 gunner during the Korean War. I retired in 1972. My profound regard for all those who sacrificed when asked to serve. LZ |
