I know CD sales are declining but I was an avid collector of your CD releases. They sound better than any file share and I'm not interested in downloading at all. So, I have not heard any new music from Cactus Island on my preferred listening format. I hope you reconsider at some point and release CDR's.

new 3" by Joel Tammik @ Smallfish, Norman Records.

Joel Tammik is from Estonia, he travels in summer and sleeps in winter. The Desert ep is a new abstract sound that has pieces of jazz and percussive detail flowing through a minimal, electronic environment. It is fractured and disjointed in parts and Tammik manages to dismantle and reconstruct sound with minimum effort. there are definate dub influences from his earlier work heard in this new recording.

Poborsk write up from Norman Rekkids;

Cactus Island's uber collectable 3" CD series goes from strength to strength this week with 'LoO' from POBORSK. This kicks off with the title track which has a lazy hip hop tempo with lots of fluid, liquid under water type synthetic sounds. Then 'Reelizdimdumb' smacks you round the skull with some difficult beats and odd electronic sounds and arrangements. There's definitely a groove there though as I'm nodding my head like one of those toy dogs on a parcel shelf. 'Wonkeebiz' does what it says on the packet. Some serious wonky business with a hypnotic beat. 'Fausbuild' ups the tempo slighty and is a tad heavier as mystical synth melodies weave in and out of the awkward stop start rhythms. For fans of Skam, Spezial Materials and deep crunchie electronics. Quality as ever from this label.

Yvat; 'Cyma' from Norman Records;
YVAT is a name that I wasn't familiar with unit the latest Cactus Island three incher landed this morning. Amazingly this dude has managed to fit 7 tracks on here. This is probably one of the better releases in this series. Not that I didn't like the last few, but this one, possibly because there are more tracks seems to explore more ideas. It's the usual Cactus Island warm / lush electronica but this gets ever so slightly more tricky / experimental and wouldn't be out of place on Skam with some of the discordant, wonky machine sounds. There are plenty of pretty noises and melodies though like on the sublime 'Air Eddy'. Ltd to the usual 250 in this series and totally worthy of the collection.

FromSmallfish;
Always a good day when a new Cactus Island release lands here at Smallfish and this one really perked my morning up considerably. A healthy 7 tracks are packed onto this cute little disc. Musically, however, it's definitely veering away from 'cute'. More than anything this has a fragmented, classically twisted rhythmic style that (ever so slightly) brings to mind the work of Autechre or early Skam. Intense programming gives you a superbly dislocated sense of syncopation and coupled with some delightfully deep achords and snippets of melodic content you've got yourself a slice of vintage Electronica that panders to no-one. As I always say, it's hard for me to pick favourites on a label like Cactus as the quality is so high, but this is definitely a good one and not to be missed if you're a fan of Electronica. As ever they're limited in quantity so snap yourself up a copy or two as soon as you can!

from normans and smallfish:

___________________________________________________________
First up is a 3" CD on the ever reliable Cactus Island imprint by QUIROGA. It's one of those ever so tasty 3" jobbers which always fly the coup quicker than a really fast bird with a rocket up its arse. Musically it's melodic electronica but with a more ahem....jazzy slant... makes me think of Savath & Savalas on that Warp label. It's got that nice Scott Herren warmth at times.. Lovely.
____________________________________________________________

My level of excitement just went up a couple of degrees because this little beauty just dropped onto the Smallfish doormat. Cactus Island release days are something to be savoured and Quiroga's 'Am I High?' is a continuation of the absolute quality we've come to expect from the label. Usually to be found producing minimal Techno for Italian labels, Walter Del Vecchio turns his hand here to a deeply beautiful, nicely abstract set of purist Electronica tracks with a diverse range of influences. The overriding flavour is Latin and his use of jazzy, funky samples along with crisply defined, crunchy Electronica rhythms is wonderful. Sweet melodies drift over the tracks and there's a sunny feel with a mellow vibe. Alternating with that, though, is a more sculptural and textured set of sounds that bleed into the tracks with a tremendous subtlety giving them a truly contemporary edge. At this rate it's going to be very hard for me to pick any more favourites from this series of releases because they are just soooo good! Don't miss out on this one as they're limited and, most importantly, it's a fantastic piece of work. Killer.

This week's reviews
11 Aug 2006

Album of thar week
MAPS & DIAGRAMS then. We've been waiting for this new album to come from Japan for what seems like eons now. Finally it's here and 'Antennas And Signals' is well worth the wait. It seems there's a bit of an electronica void at the mo with electronic labels releasing indie or doing the dubstep thing to cash in so it's refreshing to hear something some decent melodic electronica again. To be honest there's nothing new on this album you wouldn't have heard before. It's a little bit crunchy at times, clicky at other times and it's often cracking and fizzing like some alka seltzer. There's hints of Funckarma in there and some of the more mellow Quinoline Yellow and it sounds like it would fit quite nicely on the Scape label. But it's done so well..... that's the difference..... By the time you hit your 4th album you really get going oui? This is space age lounge music at the future truckstop cafe. When you're ordering you're full greasy breakfast (in pill shaped form) this is what will be on soothing your precious futuristic brains. Add to that a well dodgy 70's Roger Dean style 70's prog sleeve and you've got our album of the week. Absolutely lovely.- Phil

MOAMOO / ARTUNION
ARTMOA-003 CD
£9.99

Japanese outfit Art Union's Moamoo label has only released a few things so far, but when you consider that the first two releases were both from Ampoule's Pub, you'll get the idea of exactly where they're coming from quality wise. This third release comes from Cactus Island's very own Maps + Diagrams and showcases Tim's wonderful talent for constructing melodic, incredibly deep and strikingly beautiful Electronica of the highest possible quality. Luscious production and a series of wonderful soundscape tones give this CD a delicate and fragile feel, but with an earthy oomph that will keep you engaged all the way through. Rhythmically he keeps it crunchy and lively and the ease with which the beats flow belies the fact that it's actually incredibly complex. Essentially it's the kind of music that you'll easily make friends with and no doubt stay in touch with for many years to come! Fans of Cactus, Toytronic and Expanding will simply adore this gorgeous album and it comes highly recommended.

It's still a 3" CD, it's so so edibly cute (they're about as edible as a CD could be I reckon.... well tasty!) and it's full of those melodic electronica sounds with a small hint of crunchyness and a dash of glitchyness..... CACTUS ISLAND
CACT020

At long last, the next in Cactus Island's limited edition CD series lands, and I've been eagerly anticipating this one! Having provided a remix on Remote_'s 'Celestion' EP last year and following it up with the simply wonderful first release on Smallfish's own 3" label, Soundhacker now deliver this superb 4-track EP for Cactus. Anyone who's heard their previous work will know what to expect - crunchy, deep and atmospheric Electronica of the highest order. Complex rhythmic structures and exceptional programming guide you through the shimmering tracks that weave and flow with dark beauty. Musically strong, the cuts ar specifically designed to play with your senses and the strength of production really shines through. Just check 'Phxone' for some serious sound manipulation and cleverly edited spoken vocals... dislocating and very, very fine indeed. The way it builds up from the break halfway through is beautiful and the seething sounds just rock. If you're a fan of electronic music at all, you're going to adore this gem of a release. One of the finest in the series so far? You betcha! Get in there quick though because, as usual, we only have a small quantity available. Highly recommended.

Taigi, mano grotuve naujausias ketvirtasis Tim Martin albumas Antennas And Signals, kuris visai neseniai pasirodė Japonijos įrašų kompanijoje Moamoo, kurioje pernai buvo perleisti du Pub nuostabūs darbai.

from the tesselater:

The man behind Cactus Island recordings drops a full lengther on Moamoo under his Maps and Diagrams alias. LET’S GO!
"Sergels torga" takes you to the deepest and smoothest data mine in this quadrant, and then kicks you out instantly. Short but sweet. "Just beyond trastmassen" relays the messages through a filter of translucent swelling blocks, whilst a Day-Glo bulb packed with breaking beats and crystal stressing callings, accompanies a tick heavy beat pattern which smiles at you as it dissolves into the porous ground below. Excellent stuff.

"The same day, yesterday" is the unheard soundtrack to a particle stream emanating from the middle of nowhere. Subtle acoustic strums and washing cascades of octagon shaped shards, piece together to form a hard and rigid structure which the robots just love to sway along to, whilst "lumen landscapes" drops an ambient static introduction, which slowly recompiles itself into a more intricate pattern. Potent beats carved from porcelain, interlock with circling audio scrapes and combine to form a shape shifting bubble of glitching information which has nowhere to go. Grab your data stick and rescue the little one. Superb track.

"People of the valley" is simple and carefully structured to draw you in, with bass heavy depressions and ear stitching magic that pile into each other to create a click snap injection with a smooth underlying melody of clarity. "Fiber bundles" delves into your onboard creation banks and flicks a few around to cause memories of glowing hillsides and sandwiches which have been invaded by sand, but still are readily consumed. Playful and thought inducing track. "You just don’t get enough” is another quick mission into the smooth edged playground of moulded platforms and disappearing landscapes, with a thick buttery layer of technological smilings which keeps it all good.

"Suisai" is the pattern you see in the sky after a days worth of plane infiltrations, but this time it’s encoded itself into a huge block of rotating patterns which break the cloud coverage in this pixilated world. Crunches laced with attacking beats crumble and crash together whilst a spring induced syrup coats everything in a clear but comforting layer of protection. Check this one out.

"Antennas and signals" is a fresh cd of electronica which holds the passport to unseen worlds. It's full of hinged pathways, blinking readouts and digitized visuals which meld together to create everything which is quality on this release.

This was a good one to hear. Definetly recommended.

this just in from the angry apes:

Weave - Inbetween
[Cactus Island]

In 2005, Barry Leake and his Weave project released one of the best (but most criminally overlooked) albums of the year, when Cactus Island released Of The Nature Tone. Combining traces of hip hop, jazz and electronica, Leake created a fairly unique sound in the process.

Returning with a four track of pristine electronics, Inbetween once again touches on the live instrumentation of his amazing debut with digital sorcery behind the controls. The first song on the EP Hadajuda kicks things off in true Weave style, based around live drumming and thoughtful synths, Leake adds the occasional crackle effect over a loop of clarinet.

From here things go ambient in the sublime Speculum, with subtle pianos, picked strings of an acoustic guitar and plenty of atmospheric sounds. Similar in sections to the work of Early Pedro, the tune fuses orchestral parts with crispy beats and detailed drum programming.

Likewise, Vertu is a gorgeous composition of harps and double bass, with the electronic side of things injecting glitches and stuttered beats. Final song Gusty rounds things off nicely, dipping into hip hop like a lost Dr Octagon instrumental the song is completely upbeat and utterly fun.

Unlike most of his peers, Weave combines the warmth and depths of organic instrumentation with the slickness of contemporary electronic production. Inbetween is one of the finest EP's of the year - don't let this one slip you by.

suggestion: market research has shown that Ylid's music has increased the intelligence of pre-born child in their mother's womb. Further reports indicate, however, that it incites radicalism in the susceptable. It is suggested that the music is played with caution, especially around radical infants and even more so around the pre-born who will enter the world as precocious radicals.

Hi Jane, My spunktronic goodies dropped through my letterbox just this morning. Not had time to digest them yet but much thanks to spunktronic & Ylid.
Glad to hear his lordship's tan is coming on. Why didn't he take you with him? I would rather be sipping cocktails with you on the beach I'm sure. Does he look good in a bikini?

Hi Bod, A drinking buddy at last. So no sign of the Lark yet. I e-mailed spunktronic about 5 or 6 times, no reply. I went and paid for all the other releases after Ylids e-mail hoping that they would all be on their way but nothing, nowt, at least you got a pizza menu. I think my gas bill is due. i havn't even got a copy yet. i've never even heard the music.

Uber collectable purveyors of forward thinking electronica Cactus Island have another one out hot on the heels of the ace Nautilus release. Sabi is an artist that's new to these ears and I must say I rather like it. 'Nebulous Sights' isn't gonna blow you away on first listen as its quite subtle in its approach but there's lots of really beautiful sounds in there and its really, really pretty. Dare I say it but this is somewhat of an electronic tear jerker. Weep. This has a kind of underwater feel to it and I reckon if you listened to it in the right kind of setting it may well take you on a journey through space.

FROM SMALLFISH THIS:

SABI
NEBULOUS SIGHTS
CACTUS ISLAND
CACT018
3" CD
£4.99

Once again we are faced with another Electronica release of outstanding quality from the lovely people at Cactus Island. I don't know whether it's just me, but this series of limited edition 3" CDs just keeps on getting better and better. Sabi's contribution to the catalogue is an exquisite example of how to produce thoughtful, melodic, yet still experimental electronic music. From the opening moments of 'Plastic Stains' to the end of 'Early Morning Dusts' you are treated to an exceptional work of beauty that uses traditional Electronica components in a slightly skewed manner... Sinewave twinkles, dense textures of lovingly crafted sound, crunchy rhythmic tones and arrangements and a solid, high class production all the way through. Mark this one down in your diaries as it's an absolute beauty through and through... highly, highly recommended.

Bod's statement raises an interesting question. Is it the general consensus among fans here that reselling CI discs (on eBay usually) is "disgraceful behaviour"? Don't most retailers limit purchases to one per customer? Feedback, please.
BTW, I'm very happy to have my collection intact (still don't have Verbose though).

from norman records:

Ok all you Cactus Island heads. Another super limited sexy 3" CD this time from Planet Mu geezer Nautilis. If you like electronic music then I suggest you get your paws on this baby quick smart. Some heavy squelch action and cut up beats, endearing, emotional melodies much like his previous work, but that is no bad thing if you ask me. The EP is called stonch and has an absolute stonker of a track on it that sounds like early Gescom which is a good enough reason for me to be taking this to bed with me tonight. Only pain in the butt with these 3" CD's is that you can't play 'em in yer motorcar. They are cute though. Oh Phillip tells me you can get adaptors for them. Handy.

No sooner does the first 'Residents Association' series come to an end on Cactus Island than we launch straight into a new era of releases with this superb 3-track EP from Nautilis - one of the finest purveyors of beat-trickery around. This work is darker and more dense than some of the earlier Cactus releases and promises a slight change in direction for the label... not a bad thing at all if this is the quality of the work. Choppy, Hip Hop orientated beats and some serious layers of sound and samples weaving throughout the mix. Incredibly atmospheric stuff which'll have fans of labels like Expanding, Planet Mu and artists such as Maps + Diagrams in a big old lather. As ever you'll want to get in there quick because these will be in short supply. You know the deal... 1 per customer only. Wicked stuff.

BROCA
MINU
CACTUS ISLAND
CACT016
3" CD
£4.99
The final part of the Residents Association series from Cactus Island comes from label co-owner Broca. And it was definitely worth the wait! Broca has constructed four beautifully dense tracks with amazingly detailed programming and some truly luscious textures. The first track has an almost 4/4 feel to the beats and a glitch / minimal kind of tone which makes it surprisingly groovy (in an understated sort of way). From there it's onto some amazing tracks that are dreamlike and superbly arranged with gorgeous sounds and crispy, crunchy beats. Don't take my word for it though, just check it out. As ever there are only 100 copies of this in existence so get in there with as much haste as you can possibly muster! A highly recommended little collectable.
