Grandparents were married in Liverpool in 1846 so here by then and from their marriage cert John Kelly's father was Philip who was Manager of Cotton factory but not been able to find Philip on cencus or about the Cotton factory. | Comments: | My grandfather was born in Bootle in 1873. His mother remarried a baker called George Massie in 1894. Grandfather ran away from home and joined a ship bound for Australia about 1891. He was away about 18 months but the ship docked in the Royal group in London and he never returned to Liverpool.

| Comments: | By the way - my grandfather lived at 15 Bangor Road, Wallasey Merseyside until he died in the mid to late 1970's. His sister, Minnie, owned an as yet unidentified store, somewhere near or at the shipping yards.
I also just want to say that I have "met" some incredibly wonderful people on my journey. A kind woman at the Liverpool Library has really extended herself to me. I have the marriage certificate of John Kelly 1827 Ireland and Mary Colville 1826 Scotland, it states John's father as Philip Kelly Manager of Cotton Factory. Does anyone know if there are any records at all where I might be able to find out more about him. I have picked both families up on some census but cannot find Kelly family on 1851 which I thought would be easy as it is reasonably close to the marriage. Unfortunately I don't have 1841 census to look up either family. I don't know when the Colvilles moved from Scotland to Liverpool. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Julie |

| Comments: | I am researching the history of the only chinese junk to sail to the U.K. and U.S.A. before the twentieth century. Purchased by a group of Scottish/liverpool adventurers in August 1846 in Canton,includeing Douglas Lapraik who was a founder of The hong kong And shanghai bank. The Guangdong junk Keying was much visited by the paying public in Boston,New York and london. Captained by charles Alfred Auckland Kellet,Keying had a passenger,Hesing a mandarin (possibly self appointed!) who presented himself to the Queen at the opening of the Great Exhibition of 1851. Keying was dismantled by Redhead Harling and Brown at there premises opposit the entrance to Tranmere Ferry on the Mersey at a date unknown. What became of the chinese crew and Hesing?...there is no information at records offices and museums in Liverpool. Any help with this fascinateing story will be much appreciated. |

He joined the Merchant Navy and was ship wrecked whilst on board the "Empress of India" he got ashore wearing only his night shirt,and a ring, which is still in the family.
