Susan, I just thought I would drop you a quick line as I finished checking out your site (very nice, by the way!). Calypso Xanadu, known to me as "Effie", was the daughter of Tux (litter born 1/1/1999, I brought her home on 3/5/1999). Effie just celebrated her 9th birthday and she couldn't be a happier basenji! I live in Raleigh NC now and, although I travel a lot with work, Effie takes over the house of friends from time to time. Hope all is well.

Hi,I'm considering purchasing a basenji in the near future so found your website -it's very nice. Just curious- a statement saying that the dogs must not be left alone in the house and must be penned - where did that come from? My parents owned a kennel and bred, trained and showed basenjis as well as being involved with the BCOA from the early 60's-mid 80's. (Rafiki Kennels in Chicago with dams and sires from Fula in England and Merlea in Canada) I also showed for many years including juniours Westminster. We always had the dogs in the house and never had any issues except with me & my 4 siblings who tore the house up,not the dogs. And they were left alone as well both in the house and the yard and had no troubles except for one who occasionally jumped the 6-foot fence to visit the neighbor who handed out treats & came back when he was done. Has something changed in the basenji behavior over the last 15-20 years to make them destructive? Or just the way they're being trained nowadays? Thx., Marlene

We just lost our lovely basenji, Bishop's Blue Devil (B.D.) and our breeder is in Ca - Bushbabies Basenji's. While Googling for her address off the BCOA site - thought I'd see if any breeders in NC. (Basenjis seem to be BIG out West but not here....) Anyhoo....your basenjis are booo-ti-ful. We may pay you a visit - we live in Gibsonville, near Greensboro - and I think I can talk my retired Navy guy to come near Goldsboro! In any event, your site eased our pain abit by looking at all your lovely babies! Thank you Connie, Ben and J.B. Bishop (J. B.'s the basenji and he INSISTED on being included)

Hello, I've been really enjoying your web site about your dogs. I love how much you truly enjoy your dogs for their personalities and how much joy you get from their personalities. Your storytelling has me cracking up, too. I also have a basenji/avuvi (not really sure how to label him) that I brought back from Africa (Togo, next door to Benin).
I'm writing to you for some advice about basenji/avuvis in general and my dog in particular. Oblo is a true village dog (of unknown parentage) that I had for about a year and a half before coming back to the US.
In village I allowed him to behave as a Togolese dog does...roaming around village, hanging out with other dogs (and getting into fights with them when I wasn't there to stop it), and whatever else. I allowed that because I wasn't positive I'd bring him back, and I wanted to make sure he could survive without me.
Anyway, I've brought him back and am concerned about some anti-social traits (aggressiveness, shyness, wariness) that he's got. To some degree he's always been shy/wary of strangers, but he used to always LOVE yovos (you know what those are, right? it's the same in Benin and Togo). Now, in the US, he can't deal, and I'm worried about him getting into trouble with some stranger who thinks he can pet any dog without a problem.
I came across two little blurbs on your web site that caught my attention because they reminded me of Oblo (his name). When talking about Calypso Midnight Sun, you said you were reluctant to sell her because of
"my fear that an inexperienced basenji owner would not know how to get the most out of her, character-wise. In fact, the owners of one of her sisters failed to properly supervise and firmly lead the headstrong african, resulting in serious aggression that went undeterred. Such is the consequence that well-meaning but non-Alpha basenji owners visit upon their dogs."
You describe some typical "African shyness around strangers. Like their jungle relatives, they prefer to meet folks on their own terms and in their own time." You call it "reactionary behavior" and I find that's exactly what Oblo does: he snap at someone when they try to put a hand one him (to pet) or offer him a hand to sniff. (Funny enough, though, he doesn't mind people petting him with FEET. He's not afraid of feet.)
Also, how does one acquire the Alpha traits. I think I am alpha to Oblo (for the most part), but my mom and brother could use a little instruction if that will help them deal with Oblo.
I'm pretty sure Alpha is also the best description for my dog (most especially in his interactions with other dogs). He's no shrinking violet.
Could you tell me a little what these "tests" are that "Alpha, well-adjusted basenjis like their pack leaders (us!!) [use] to keep proving that we are worthy of the position and title and respect"?
I'm sorry for the never ending questions. I'm just so concerned for Oblo's well-fare and thought to try asking experts on the breed (and it's variations).
Thank you in advance sooooooo much.
Sabina Rogers

ps, Caramel looks almost exactly like another dog from Togo that my neighbors had. Her name was Qui Sait l'Avenir ("who knows the future" in French), and she was very sweet tempered and fiercely protective of her family.

Our deepest sympathy to good friends in basenjidom, Glenda & Myrl Galdeen of Saginaw, Michigan. On 23 February,2004, they lost their beloved "Maddie" (Glemyr Midnight Madness) to cancer. Maddie had the temperament people dream of for any dog: soft and sweet and loving. She couldn't be shown - she collapsed at the feet of any judge, awaiting tummy rubs. Maddie was a 'lap Princess', and a joy to know. She was a daughter of our Rhett and Tasha, but it was certainly Rhett that the whole litter copied. Sweet and loving, but a creatively criminal streak ran right up the middle! We will miss you Maddie, but you are in grand company across The Bridge now!

Susan,

Well, you know about how I feel about my Breaker, Breaker 1-9 and our life would not be complete without Cat! We feel the perfect companion for our basenjis, besides another basenji of course, was the addition of our rescued greyhound Libra. And yes, she is as sweet as she looks, in fact, probably more so. You are so encouraging even after all these years and a good friend as well. We are forever in your debt. Just wish we could have started a showing dynasty here in east Tennessee for you!!

Wow, Susan, I guess I have not surfed around lately. I had no idea your website was so, well, huge. You are right, you cannot tell a short story. Thank you for helping me find the most wonderful breeder in Oregon from whom I got my "First Basenji". Quite the experience. A dianty little lady and demon dog, hound from hell at once! I wouldn't change a thing about her, my little Ziggy Stardust. Thanks also for the new friends I have found along this way.

Susan: I am very impressed with your site, but, more than that, with the beauty and perfection of your dogs. It was nice meeting you at the International Show in Guatemala, Central America, last year, as now we can always be in touch and we will see each other again in this beautiful company and maybe travel to Costa Rica.
The photos of your two Young Promises is just impressive!!!
I couldn´t breathe for a while after looking at them! Plans?
Keep it up! What you have bred must definetely be the best!
Good Luck, always!

Iloved looking at your web site. Charlotte (my wife) grew up with Basenjis and would like to have another one. We have three children and have been waiting for the smallest of the three to grow up some before entering into the world of a basenji owner. I am attracted to the "function" and character of this breed. Lure coursing and hunting with this little guy seems like it could be lots of fun. You have wonderful "kids." Thank you, Smith

Scott and I are so excited to be getting another of your beautiful puppies, Calypso Holiday Jazz Flutesong. Aland (Unona's Calypso Aland Flutesong) is by far the most pleasant male we have ever owned. He is a wonderful dog, I could write a book about all the great experiences we have had with him. Jazz will also be welcomed by Aland's cat, Stitch, a Bluepoint Munchkin. We can hardly wait for Jazz to join our family.
Thank you so much Susan and Kevin.
Best Regards,
Nancy

DEAR CALYPSO FAMILY: don't forget to send us your holiday greetings w/pictures and stories of your Calypso basenji! After the holidays, I will be putting them together for our wonderful, dedicated Katja (web site designer, YEA!!!) to start working on THE FAMILY GALLERY. Of course, because we are talking about BASENJIS, it will be a ROGUE'S GALLERY,filled with little criminal masterminds, dontcha know!
We want the funny, sometimes sad, most times MADDENING tales from your 'curlies' that you care to share. We all know that 'life among the savages' is not one-sided. It is filled with love and laughter, tears and .... caninicidal (?) thoughts! Basenjis inspire emotions to the 'nth' degree!

So don't delay and wait for the Annual Calypso Kennel Letter to get to you before you write, send us your stuff now, while you are thinking about. GRANDMA SAYS SO!

To Tux's Ladies in Finland - thank you so much for giving Mr.Traveling Show Boy such a wonderful time in your beautiful country back in 2000. He went so many places and met so many people, and the care and love he was given is treasured by me ( and I'm sure, by him, too!). You opened the door to the world of FCI and international showing to us both, and now the Calypso basenjis. Many folks 'over here' would never dream of leaving the States and putting themselves and their dogs on the line to compete against foreign-bred-and-shown basenjis, but now it is definitely a part of our world, and breeding philosophy.

To me, it's not about winning, it's about wanting to meet other basenji folks and their dogs, and competing together, no matter the outcome. The 'point' is in showing up, making the effort to take the chance and saying 'I believe my dog is worthy, no matter what happens'. Winning is icing on the cake, and certainly eases the 'pain' of the expense of such long-distance competition, but even losing does not dim the pleasure of having made the effort and showing to the other competitors that, yes, I believe in the worthiness of what you are doing, too, and going head-to-head with you on your own turf. Competition for competition's sake, not some head game/glory-seeking.

To my Finn friends who introduced all this to me in such a wonderfully welcoming way, I thank you with all my heart for bringing me this Gift, The World, through Tux and Aatu and their 'changing places'! Whereas once I was 'just' an American, I now see myself as 'of the world', and every place as somewhere I might want to visit with my dogs.
Tomorrows are exciting possibilities, and if they include palm trees and white sand beaches, well, heaven, don't you think?!
