His father was Adam Hollinger.My grandmother was Isabella L Hightower, daughter of William's grandaughter. William escaped the massacre at Fort Mims. Isabella married late in life to John Haynes.Their daughter Mary Ernestine Haynes married my father Zearl Oliver Casey of Monroe County. My fathers family was large and prolific.John Haynes died in 1951.Isabella died in 1963 shortly after her daughter died of cancer. Isabella was born in 1870. |

--------- Bryars and Hadley at Ft. Mims 1813------ I see where the Bryars and Hadley are listed as killed at the Ft. Mims Massacre 1813. I don't know exactly how those names got put in the list but neither were present at the time. I will say Lazarus John Bryars (the first Bryars to come to Tensaw abt-1804) did have a property damage claim. I am a descendant of his son Charles Bryars born 1802 died 1844 Stockton Baldwin Co. Al. He also had a son Lazarus Jr. born 1799 who married Harriet McDonald and had four children, the last one born 1835. He, Lazarus Sr. also married his second wife Mary McDonald and had two children born 1809 and 1810. Both Stephen and Ethelbert lived out their lives way past 1853 and the other 1858. Lazarus Sr. then married his third wife Mary (Granny) Smith and had Green Berry Bryars born 1817 and Red Berry Bryars born 1819. So you see all the Bryars are accounted for and none were killed in 1813. Now I will say that 1873 there was the Bryars/Hadley feud where as Green Berry Bryars was killed. Now for the Hadley's. The first Benjamin (Ben) Hadley that came to Alabama first went to Mississippi. He is found there in 1810 and later with his first son Joshua by his first wife Betty King who has deceased in NC sometime earlier. Joshua went on to Texas from there so he wasn't at Ft. Mims at any time. Ben Hadley married his second wife Betty Kenderson/Kinderson abt-1808 in Mississippi. He has most of his family there and moved them to Ga. All accounted for. Jane b-1810 Jesse b-1812, Simon b-1816, James b-1813, John b-1820, W'm b-1808 and Cynthia b-1817. All lived past 1813 and none were ever there. In 1819 Ben was found by himself (and Slave) at the Alabama River (Above where the Tombigbee and Alabama River join) by a US Naval Survey team. There is a record of it and also Ben mentions about his family being in Georgia and he will soon move them there where now the Hadley Home place and cemetery is located. Seven Miles Springs. It's a few miles West of the Lottie Store on Baldwin County Rd. 61. So you see the Hadley family, except Ben, didn't come to the area until after 1819. John B. Dean |

I have questions about: Depositions for Michael EHLERT before IA by James CORNELLS, Sam DALE, Zachariah McGIRTH in your Creek documents, at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cmamcrk4/crkdox19.html#anchor1171326 shared by Steve Travis. I am a descendant of Samuel Elbert (Georgia, 1740-1788) who worked as a boy (circa 1755) under John Rae (mentioned in Lachlan MacGillivray's will, http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cmamcrk4/crkdox27.html#anchor1047473) as an Indian trader and who served under General Lachlan MacIntosh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lachlan_McIntosh) during the American Revolution (and was quite loyal to him) I note that Elbert and his wife Elizabeth Rae (John Rae's daughter) are not mentioned in Lachlan MacGillivray's will while Rae, his wife Catherine, and other daughter Jean Sommerville are (I assume this is either because of Elbert's ties to MacIntosh or to the American Revolution; the MacGillivray's were loyalists, as Elbert originally was, but switched). I would like to see the originals of the documents shared by Mr. Travis, because of the various spellings of Ehlert (also spelled Elhart and I think Elliot). I am wondering if in any way this could be a corruption of the name Elbert and if Michale Ehlert is a long lost distant cousin, because of course, Elbert was quite close to some of the Creeks and in fact the Creeks apparently spared/saved his life once in the woods. Thus I'm checking to see if he is an Elbert descendant by a Creek wife, possibly a grandson. (This would not make us Creek, since we are descendants of Elbert's wife Rae, but would make the Elhart line Elbert descendants. We might have some native ancestry by another ancestor--but not by Elbert; but I'd like to know all the same if he had a Creek wife too--I know that many of the traders were not too good about acknowledging their mixed blood children; I think that Creek Chief William MacIntosh got little notice from his father; likewise Lachlan MacGillivray mainly acknowledged his children because of Alexander's fame, though he did educate them.) Both of my grandparents on my Mother's side were 1/2 Creek, with (as my Grandfather used to say when my Grandmother was angry) a little Cherokee "thrown in" on my Grandmother's side. One note: I notice that you mention Monroe county as a "base" for Ft. Mims, when it is in Escambia county, as I have seen and visited it as a boy, and swam in Burnt Corn creek many times as well. My Grandparents are buried only a few hundred yards from the site of Ft. Mims. Their surnames were Nelson and Johns. Also, the creek behind Ft. Mims was/is called Murder creek because of the "settlers" killed there.
I can't remember a lot of it, but supposedly from the treaty, I have heard my Grandfather say on occasion, that the State of Alabama still owes him (his family) either $32.00 or 160 acres of land! Thanks Again. Ira AKA in Creek: Waterfall |

| Comments: | Comment on Battle of Burnt Corn. According to this site, the battle occurred in Monroe County. It actually occurred in the Mississippi Territory. It is also true the site was in Monroe but only until 1818 when Conecuh County was formed. When Escambia County was formed from Conecuh and Baldwin in 1866, it became the site of the battle. The most logical site, based upon topographical descriptions from the men who fought and the descriptions of the creek and spings, is west of Appleton in Escambia County approx. 1 mile south of the Conecuh line. All accounts of the battle state that the Americans reached the Wolf Trail/Pensacola Road intersection from the west and turned southward. This intersection is placed near Belleville (in Conecuh County) by all historians. For the battle site to be in Monroe, a turn to the north would have been required to take the Americans to Burnt Corn. It should be noted that the main stream of Burnt Corn Creek, from its head, never crosses the Monroe line. Topgraphically, the Monroe site claimed by residents of the area does not match descriptions given by particiapnts in the battle. |

My forefamily is said to have been in the Fort that day, with Benjamin and his wife Mary and daughter not surviving but his son, John Hoven, escaping with several others through a hole in the fort wall, swimming the Alabama 7 times before escaping the Creeks, and finally traveling north 15-20 miles or so and settling on the banks of the Tombigbee (Jackson, Clarke County), where my father resides still today. I have heard this and read it in local papers and even located it on the web a few years back. If you know anything about this I would love an update. I'm currently working on a collection of short stories drawn from the legends and history of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, and was hoping that someone here might more information about the Creeks who lived there prior to Charles Page's land purchase from them in 1908. Here are the facts that I know for certain at this point: * Prior to the arrival of Charles Page, the area that is now known as Sand Springs was originally settled by a Lieutenant Thomas Adams, a former Confederate light infantryman. * Presumably families other than Adams were allowed to move into the area. A graveyard that Adams founded there in 1883, called the Tullahassee Creek Indian Cemetary, included several other notable Creek names like Harjo, Emarthla, Fuswa, and Fixco. * During the time of the Creek habitation, it was called Adams, Adams Springs, or Oktain Eukiwa. What I would like to know MORE about at this point are the Adams who lived here, and whatever other families might have lived alongside them circa 1880. Specifically, what company/batallion etc. did Lt. Adams serve with prior to his moving to the Sand Springs area? Where did he come from before that? What clan did he belong to? Are there any other important or interesting facts to know about him? I know that's a lot to ask, but I'm really striving for authenticity here, and want the Adams to be as vivid in my stories as some of the later, notable historical figures that I'm portraying. I believe he was born in Mayo, Florida--the baby of about 14 children around 1900. He and my grandmother raised me after my mother died. I am so sorry now that I didn't ask more questions, but as you know, Indians aren't big talkers, and there are only a few of us left now. I am reading now about the Creek Indians...I have a vague memory of that name, but I thought the family was saying Crete. My grandparents are Luella Ellen Coonfield b. February 08,1897, m. Delbert Franklin Cochran. Luella's parents are: Lattie Cedonia Little, b. January 14, 1872, m. Benjamin Wallace Coonfield. Lattie's parents are John Little, b. December 04, 1843, m. Mary Crigler. John Little's parents are: Hiram Lucius Little, b. February 08, 1821, m. Nancy Catherine Wright. Nancy's sister Ann Wright married to Nancy's brother-in-law Douglas Little.
Through the wright sister's leads us to William Weatherford (cheif Red Eagle). My mother has been trying to link her Indian heritage for years. I am told that one of my ancestors participated in the Creek Wars as a member of the East Tenn. Vols (from Warren County).
