Comments:I am trying to put this all together...I know it started with Arthur Sizemore and I was registered by mother with the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a Creek Indian. I believe it's from the Anderson line(Pensacola area) but still trying to piece it together and no one in the family is any closer to knowing than I am! Can ANYONE shed some light?
Thanks!

Comments:This is a wonderful website. I am the descendant of John Jacoups and his creek wife. Both were apparently slaves to the Cherokee of Jackson County before removal. Their daughter was left with a white family named Roden. She is listed as their domestic servant in the 1850 census. One of her children was denied any claim to any treaties because the BIA agent said they were born into slavery. They evidently were considered to be just physical property along with the other farm animals. Thankfully times have changed. Anyone with any information on the Jacoups/Jacobs family of Marshall, Etowah, Dekalb, Jackson counties it would be appreciated if you would contact me. Thank you.

Comments:Believe it or not, I accidentally came across the Shomo name on the Alabama Archives site and was very curious about that surname of which his full name was listed as Dr. Joseph Weatherford Shomo. Too, that particular posting was puzzling to me and I was sure there was more to the event which led me to involve myself in further research regarding Dr. Joseph Weatherford Shomo. Thank you for the records on your site. Somehow, and maybe, I will eventually find the answer to the question that brought me to this site.

Comments:My Champion and Shell great-grandparents were supposed to have been part Indian. They came from Jacksonville, Alabama which is right near the dividing line between Cherokee and Creek lands. Great-great-great-grandfather "Buck" Champion bought land from Chief Rabbit for whom Rabbit Town east of Jacksonville was named.
His son "Jake" Champion married secondly to Nancy C. McAlpin whose mother was Manah Matilda, "an Indian princess". The McAlpins were from outside of what is now Tallapoosa, Georgia on the Jacksonville Road.

My great-grandmother Mary Elizabeth Shell was said to have been more Indian than her husband Robert Alexander Champion. She was the daughter of William Parks Shell and his second wife N. Melissa Cupp Shell. Wm Parks Shell was said to have been a peace-maker between the Indians and white settlers. There is a story in the Shell family that the first Shell immigrant was an indentured servant in Florida and escaped to the Okeefinokee Swamp and lived with the Indians until he killed a brave fighting over a woman and had to leave.
However, all records of William P. Shell have him in Benton County, Alabama in 1850, Hall County, Georgia in 1860, Carroll County, Georgia in 1861, and in Calhoun County, Alabama in 1870 and 1880. He then disappears from records.

Comments:Mrs. Middleton,

I have thoroughly enjoyed the material that you have here. My third generation grandmother was half Creek and half Catawba. Her parents were Cherokee slaves according to national archives documents. She was a "domestic servant" for the Roden family of Dekalb County Alabama, which off course implies the obvious. Her parents went West during Indian removal and they never returned for her. We don't know if they died on the way or not. Thank you for web pages.

The Mcgirths and Browns, who started out as tories with the East Fla. rangers and ended up pirating with Wm AUgustus Bowles and later came to settle At Sandtown, Ga. Here they were the most dreadful outlaws until the creek removed from Ga., when they moved to Tuckabachee and other towns.

They had Leila Ogden Malone of Mobile who wed Biloxi harbormaster Capt. Harry Copp James. I had Creek Chief Samuel Moniac, Sr's son's memorial stone placed at Bushnel National Cemetery, Florida, near the Battle of Wahoo Swamp battlefield, Second Seminole War. Maj. David Moniac (originally a Lt. 5th U.S. Inf.) of the Alabama Mounted Creeks in U.S. service, was killed leading his troop, over 50 bullets in his human remains. Thanks to his mentor, Col. Russell, David was West Point's first Native American graduate (see West Point and Bushnell websites). The stone's obverse quotes Gen. Jesup that David was "As brave as any man who has drawn a sword and faced the enemy".

Comments:In memory of Carol Middleton, our 9th Native American powwow here in Germany is dedicated. For appreciation to Carol for her helping many of us with our family,s genealogy.

With the help of many other kin folk who worked with her, her project "Among the Creeks" was a masterpiece for those families who lost contact with their Native American Ancestors due to removal years, fear and the genocide against our Native American families that followed.

Many of our families and kin folk are still here, at the Poarch Band of Creek Indian Tribe in Alabama, many of the small family clans and Tribes in Florida, Georgia, Texas and the Creek Nation in Oklahoma.

She brought the truth to light and the proud and dignity back to our people which was taken by force and that same sickness still exsists today with the rascist and hate groups in the internet that even call themselves ndn when they are not, and they can no longer hurt us with their hate.

We are very proud of Carol and all the others that helped her with her life time project. Mvto to all.

Rest in peace sister, you will live on in our memories and the bloodlines of our children that was your gift to us.

It's great to see someone who is helping research and preserve our tribes heritage. Are you related to or the wife of Coach Melvin Middleton?

I myself want to trace my family history as far back as I can. My father was Otis Gibson, GrandFather Elbert Gibson, GrandMother Ida McGhee. I've only recently returned to Poarch in response to the Tribes request that I come and supervise the Tribes interest in the Construction of the new WindCreek casino. My two daughters speak very highly of a Mrs. Middleton that comes to their school (Huxford Elementary) Would you have any ideas on my best course of action to trace my family history.

Seems like I may be related as a distant cousin to several of you here!!

Best of luck to everyone on their searches!

And to Di Anna Bassett - I am glad you stuck to your guns in searching for meaning rather than what your siblings were after. I have always felt a very strong pull to the Indian peoples - LONG before I found out that it was MY heritage. To me, this is as much about finding myself as it is about finding my ancestral roots. It is truly a rewarding experience!

Comments:I just wanted to THANK YOU for all the information your site/page provided me in my geneology search. I have only just found my way home to my biological family these past 10 years, and although I've been given a copy of my family tree, it hasn't been until now that I took up investigating my heritage. I am down the branches of William "Red Eagle" Weatherford. It is truly interesting to read all this fascinating family ancestry! Makes me wish I had paid closer attention to my US History classes in school!
I am starting to fall in love with History now (well, at least our family's!)
Thanks again for putting in all the obvious time and effort you've put in to this research!
I am truly proud to be part of the Sehoy/Weatherford heritage/family!

Comments:I grew up knowing I was of my grandmother's heritage. Her name, Jerusha Josephine Weatherford. She knew about her connection to Billy (Red Eagle) but knew very little. Partial facts. In her time, most people down played their Native American Heritage. Because I took after her family, she always called me her little indian girl. I cherished and carried that with me and have tried to live my life in a way to make her proud. When younger I started researching until Brothers and sisters started showing interest in "indian rights" so I quit. To me this research is spirtual and of deeper meaning. I have started my research again now that I am older. need to get my grandmother's birth certificate because I do not know her father's name. On reading Searching for Red Eagle, I felt for the first time in my life that I had come home and had a real place in this life. I would like to make a journey to places in Billy's life and perhaps to his burial site in Monroe County. Does anyone know if it is open to public and or other spiritual places that would be of importance in his life? I am doing this for my soul as well as in honor of my grandmother.
Thanks Di (Dances with Dogs) Bassett

Comments:I recently learned through my father that my 5th grandmother on my father's side was Eliza Grierson one of Captain William McIntosh's wives. I want to know how and who to provide a DNA test to in order to prove my Indian heritage. I also realize I have Scottish heritage which is all very exciting to me. Apparently my aunt (my father's sister) did a geneaology research on our family some years back and traced us back to McIntosh family. I was adopted out of our family as my father and mother were not married at the time of my birth and therefore knew nothing about my family history. If anyone knows of the names Ethel B. Williams, Louisa Turner, Sarah Ann Cousin, Catherine McIntosh or Eliza Grierson, I would love to hear any information they might have. I was born in Walton County, Florida. Thank anyone for any info in advance. Barbara Kelley Rackley.

Comments:First of all, thank you for such an incredible sight. The amount of research and documentation presented is staggering !

I only began researching my family within the last six months and I'm thrilled to finally find out where I came from. My grandfather, Samuel Witt Hollinger, never, ever spoke of his family. With help from distant relatives I found that I am decended from Adam Hollinger and Elizabeth Moniac.

I now feel as if I have all my Native American ancestors with me at all times.

Thank you so VERY much and thanks to the Great Creator for revealing to me who I am.

ps any assistance with Samuel Witt Hollinger b1883 in Oxford, Mississippi would be greatly appreciated :-)

She married Abner W. Carter, 27 Nov 1834, in Upson County. Her marriage license records her name as only Cyntha (we know her as Cynthia). She died, 25 Aug 1885, in Tallapoosa County, AL. Her children are Thomas, Elisha, Cynthia, Samuel, Sarah, Emily, George, Amy, Jarred, Aletha, Isabella. I don't know where to begin to find out Cyntha's (or Cynthia's) Creek family or if it is even possible to do so. Any help would be appreciated.

Comments:Hello! I was born and raised in Los Angeles. My paternal grandmother, Lestra Lawson Gray was from Attalla, Alabama. Her sister told me that my 3rd great-grandfather, John Parker was a steamboat captain carrying passengers on the Coosa River during the 1870's. His second wife whose first name started with a M (Melissa or Melinda, I can't remember which) who was 1/2 Indian from Choccolocco River in Alabama. Later, my research results revealed that Choccolocco River is located on Poarch Creek Indian reservation in southern Alabama. I was surprised that she was obviously a Creek! I mentioned this information to a Creek Indian student in Norman, Oklahoma. He even surprised me with even more information. He told me that Parker people were also mixed blood Creeks. He told me to find out if my Parker ancestor came out of Georgia. So I checked it on the Census records and, yes, it did show him being born in Georgia. I was stunned. Is there someone out there that can help me with my Parker genealogy? I can be reached at marykaywow@yahoo.com Thank you!

She married a Dr. Robert Burton Dickerson, of Walker County, Georgia, one of the signers of the Georgia Ordinance of Succession. One of her sons, my great grandfather, Marcus Irwin Dickerson, emigrated to Texas after the American Civil War. His daughter, Mayme Florence Dickerson Smith, always maintained that her father's family were Indians from Georgia. I've hit a dead end with Sophia Tait because I don't know the names of her parents. Nevertheless, my research does show some "Sophias" and "Elizabeths" in the Tait or Tate family.
