| Comments: | I left Capreol in the summer of 1966 after finishing gr.6 at St. Marys School. The first 11 years of my life were a magical time and ones never to be forgotten. I am the son of Albert Monaghan who at the time was Area Engineer for the C.N.R. Our family, mother Phillis, siblings Jim, Heather,Gary and Kelly moved to Edmonton for five years where Jim and Heather remain until today. The rest of us moved on to Toronto but eventually we all migrated back to Edmonton. We all have very fond memories and stories of Capreol and share them often. I visited Capreol in 2010, and couldn't believe how much it looked the same. I moved away in 77 and have only been back 3 times since. Glad to say that's where my life started. |

I was in a trift store today and found this book "Capreol The first 75 years" this book was put out by the city of Capreol it covers the years 1918 to 1993 it is a hardback book very nice condition . It's strange how a book on Capreol wound up in Merced California in a trift store. Nice black and white photos of people that lived there and the history of the town. My mum was married to Jack (John) Boudreau a very serious railroader if there ever was one. We miss her but know she is in a better place following Dad around in railway heaven I'm sure. | Comments: | This is a terrific site. I check in here regularly to keep in touch with what's going on in Capreol and area. The names are all so familiar. Even though I left Capreol when I was 17 to go to Nursing School I will always consider it my home. Dad was an engineer on the CNR until he had to retire for medical reasons. He died suddenly in '93. Mom is living in Hamilton and enjoying life, but continues to keep in touch with her friends here. Capreol was the best place to grow up. We had lots of fun. Great memories! |

These are the people that made and left a remarkable impact on my life...I grew up in Norman Township on Randolph street 1960's -late 1970's with my Brothers Val (deceased), my brother Russel and Jason, my sisters Charlotte, Jenny and Judy, My Mom Evelyn, and one of the most important men that will forever hold a place in my heart-Simon Guay. Randolph Street was always like one big family with families like the Foucoults, Cotie's, Chaput's, Villeneuv's (sp)...... Swimming at Norman Beach (after the long treck up Grichens hill and through the bush) aka-shortcut lol, Picnics at Capreol Beach, Picking blueberries in the mountains behind our house,Going out for a Sunday drive out Milnet road....If I could turn back time, that is where I would begin again and again.

| Comments: | Although I live in Windsor I will always consider Capreol my hometown. I always think of it as land of the birch trees and a place where I spent many happy years as a child. I hope to move back when I retire which is not that many years off. My cousin David Colasimone still resides there so I am home often but not as much as I would like. I work a midnight shift so when time permits I peruse this site. I've come across a few familiar names. Was quite touched by Rikki Lamoreux's mention of my Uncle Jim's passing....he was like a second father to me. I lived with him and Aunt Pauline in California for a short period after highschool. Sadly my Dad Jack passed away in 1986 in Kingston while working for the crown corporation of UTDC. He was working on a feasability study of putting railway wheels on a bus to run and provide services for the romote areas of Manitoba. Unfortunately he passed before that was completed. My Mom and sisters all live in Windsor as well. Keep up the good work! This site is terrific!!!!! |

| Comments: | Hello from beautiful Port Dover, On. My family (Tony Dashnay & Sharon Studer) moved from Capreol in 1979. I grew up in Capreol and cried for months after leaving my family and life long friends. So many memories of good times and some bad. Miss Capreol and everyone there. Things have changed so much, our old house on Sellwood has seen better days. We drive through to go to camp at least once a year and stop to visit our Goddard relatives. See Bill & Starr Heckman once a year or so too.

We left Capreol to move to London ON in 1967 but of course, Capreol will always be home for me. We lived on River St, now Lakeshore Dr...so I loved the river. In the good old days, we did our swimming lessons there! I remember bowling in the basement of the YMCA building...and sneaking to the swinging bridge past the station!

| Comments: | About a year or so ago I started digging around in my ancestral closet, and thanks to many of you fine folks in Capreol, I've finally had some success in (re)uniting with family members that, until recently, I didn't even know existed. Apparently, it was mutual.
At any rate, it's been a cool adventure, and I'd like to thank those of you who offered up help and info. Just what one would expect from small town folk, assistance and understanding. Thanks one and all. Greatly appreciated. With any luck I'll get north to visit part of my ancestral homeland. Even though I no longer live in Capreol, I still visit my parents a couple times a year and absolulety love "going home" What memories I have, driving out the mine road, swimming at Norman Beach, Capreol River and Ella Lake, yes I still insist on calling it Ella... memories of being at my pepare and mamare's camp there. Remember when we still had a movie theater there? (anyone remember the one older lady who always worked there, God she seemed so grumpy back then, I probably would be too thinking back on it, dealing with all us teenagers sneaking booze in haha) I still enjoy hopping out of my parents back yard on Hanna Street and walking in the forest. I remember the days of crossing the old swinging bridge and the foot bridge. Also going down along the railway tracks to get into town. It was also fun rowing a canoe/boat across the river too. I attempted so many times to swim from the beach to the old island where the diving board was...I finally made it...20 years later..lol!! I remember getting caught a thousand times at the old CNR icehouse in the summertime. Best place to keep cool on a humid day...lol!! I have so many memories of Capreol...the people, the events, the town.... |

Long trip to move out with LOTS of difficult goodbyes! Never lived anywhere else but Capreol and now enjoying the west. Sons both live in BC. The call of the grandkids was too good an opportunity to pass up:)! So here we are with our little dog Midget--who travelled across the country like a real trooper.
We are settling in with Phil and family, finally having the chance to enjoy being full-time grandparents. To every one of our friends living in Capreol and all the "old" friends living away, greetings! Great to be able to keep in touch! Love reading everyone's memories. |

Unfortunately, I am a decade too late but at last my mind is at rest. A few siblings and wives remain and we have found each other... How strange that decades of searching revealed nothing while one simple post here brought forth to my aid the true spirit of love, caring and understanding that can never be lost...the very hearts of real Capreolites... There are so many that have helped that my list would seem endless here so I will just say "Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for closing a gap in my lifeline. Your meaningful thoughts are not to be forgotten ever..." I want also to pitch an ad or two here. Ken Lynn, with the Capreol Museum, it composing a pictoral history of Capreol for a museum display and would really appreciate receiving earlier generation photographs of people and places... Also, Ricki Lamerieux is still doing his entertaining and has yet some openings ahead. His prices are "cheap" but he himself is a priceless entertainer whom leaves a piece of his heart with all those he shares his talent with...remember him when the need arises... It does appear so many posts here are of generations after mine as I lived in Capreol in the mid forties... It does appear my siblings have done well to make progress over the years and the earmarks of memory they have created are a worthy treasure... I guess I was living on the wrong side of the tracks then but I took hold of the adventure of Capreol and do feel it somehow has influenced my life to this very day... Something of memory for my siblings of family and extended families. I attended a two room school with six grades in each room...GULP...! Nyoka and Larry was the matinee serial on Saturday. 25 cents would buy me a haircut, s matinee ticket, a small bag of popcorn and I would have two pennies to bring back to mom... According to posts here, Capreol has progressed tremendously while yet retaining the beauty of memories for those generations behind me. Congratulations as well as a happy birthday wish are in order for all those making this evolution a grand success... Let's see now...when I lived in Capreol, she was about 18 years old...WOW...! I am not old, I am ancient history...! Black bear ran around our back yard like do dogs today. The railroad tracks ended and trains turned around in Capreol. Nyoka and Larry was the serial at the movie house matinee. My mom would give me twenty-five cents twice a month and that would buy my haircut, a movie ticket, a small bag of popcorn and I had a penny to bring back home... My, how life and "culture" does change after sixty-five years...! 'Best' because all the members came from Capreol: Jim Boudreau, Ray Constantin, Ken Menzies, John Meserschmit, all railroaders, though John only for a little while. Had our own tv show for 2 years (Ricki Lamoureux Show) - and wowed all the stars from Taranta (TO) when we backed them up long before big amps killed our business. When I lived in Capreol, I went to school with Doug Mohns, and one of the Mazzuca boys, but can't be sure which one. I consider Val a close friend, but he is about 3 years too young to have been in my class. Fond memories of my first love Faye McKay and her talented dad (& Sally too); Terry White who lived across from me (in Doug Christenson's house), Bunky McKinnon; Jeanne Dubois & brother ?; Very fond memories of most of the names mentioned in other people's notes: Ivan Lalonde's drug store; also Bertrand Bros. grocery store where dad was butcher with a "Kutchaw?" - Danny Gaudette too - and I hate to day it but I delivered groceries on my bike at Larry's Supermarket in Sudbury when Danny Gaudette's mom worked there and still single!! - I loved them all dearly and still is in touch with Ken & Ray Constantin. Too bad Jim B. passed away about 6 years ago. Oh, I must mention Maurice Gelinas, the golden voice like Bing Crosby who sang with us often. THE CAPREOL BLESSING CONTINUES: I was a printer who went to Toronto Telegram paper in '63, found my trade disappearing (computers) and wound up pro entertainer internationally, and still doing it at my age of 75 1/2 from Cape Breton to Vancouver, all seniors' homes. In the interim, I had wound up travelling with the Vegas Revue starring Jackie Vernon; command performance at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, and was top earner with Holiday Inn chain for 5 years ('70 to '74) till they got silly and went after the delicate rock crowd who never did learn how to drink, got themselves killed on highways in such numbers that MADD was dedicated to closing them down. - I do go on too much, but love you all - Ricki Lamoureux |

| Comments: | I never lived in Capreol. I know it is a true railway town. I live in Vancouver, B.C. now. In 1977 and 1978, I resided in Ottawa. I work for the railway. One evening, I boarded the westbound CN Super Continental ( CN's transcontinental Passenger train) in Montreal to return to Ottawa in 1977. I would have been about 20 years old then. I sat next to a young lady from Capreol. Her name was Carolyn Sbrega. I fell in love with her, but things didn't work out. I met her parents ( Hank is her dad) on a VIA Rail train approaching Vancouver in 1986. They were surprised to meet somebody out in B.C. who knew and cared for her daughter. I often wonder to this day how Carolyn is doing and would love to hear from her if anyone here could pass on my E-mail to her who knows her. |

We just moved back to Canada from Belgium where we worked for the last 3 years.....okay John worked and I planned our trips. I did have my walking group of international ladies who walked 6 km every morning and I also did the Bastogne march of 22 km and the Maldegem march of 32 km. You have to exercise when you are trying all the Belgian beers they have over there! |

10 years ago I went back with my husband, detour from Elliot Lake. I wanted to take him to see the dump and the bears. Couldn't find it, it was covered over :). I enjoyed pointing out our old house, "German Mountain" where we had so much fun and Ella Lake. I miss the wild blueberries and snowmobiling. It was nice to find one of my old friends, Leanne Larmondin on facebook. |

| Comments: | Went up in August but missed the celebrations again. If I can go again I am going to make a point of being there for the celebration on the civic holiday weekend.
I met Ken Lynn and saw the old school car, I attended. Mr. Sloman and his wife were great people. My daughter nearly flipped when I walked in the school car and said "holy cow, that was my seat." I thought my daughter's jaw was going to drop through the floor. I talked to Ken Lynn about the pics I have of my dad Pete Cheneir, and my stories of dad on the bull gangs and my mom Mary feeding them. My dad also operated the snow plow, and was section foreman of Capreol yard for a lot of years. It was so nice to talk to someone who remembered......I can not express my gratitude enough to all those who work so hard on putting the history of Capreol on the map. I am so proud to say.....my home town is Capreol. Since my fantastic Careol neighbour got me signed up to this guest book 2 years ago, I have talked to many old dear friends and welcome all their emails and messages. I can be found on face book under may maiden name too ( Linda Chenier Stuart)if anyone wants to chat and share pics. I sure as hang do not look anything like I used to. Ken Lynn said he recognized my face, so hot damn I ain't changed that much. Maybe I am just imagining all those wrinkle lol....... I will be adding to the history book when I can find time with photos of my mom and dad and other stories. | Comments: | Scrolling through the pages of Dreambook - Capreol was so great to see so many familiar names I once went to School with. Yes good OL "CAPREOL" was a legend in the ol days when I lived across the Vermillion River past 3 bridges (my favourite the "SWINGING BRIDGE" which many a time I dove off to swim. Actually I learned to swim being pushed off the SWINGING BRIDGE an oh yes it really did swing although now all that is left are the cables spanning the river from
side to side. I remember the day the STEAM ENGINES ruled the rails. Those massive wheels and the old engines. Thank God Capreol has this type of Engine as a Museum Artifact. Capreol in it's day was the greatest town ever to have grown up in and schooled. Capreol used to have four passenger trains arriving and separating to Montreal and Toronto daily. The Railway (CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILWAYS) was the focal point of placing Capreol on the map. I remember when the trains had to be air conditioned with blocks of ice in the summer, cut in winter from the river and the blocks of ice stored in the ice house. There was also a stock yard where the railway would unload cattle, pigs etc. to be fed before being reloaded to their final destination. Capreol was blessed with a theatre (which I worked at at age 13 for the Bilsborough's. At 12 I would get up t 4 in the morning and work at Dapp's Bakery. Capreol had a Drug Store (Lalond's) Drago's Men's Wear Lepki's Grocery Nepitt's Grocery and Oil Mazzuca's (Val) Grocery Frank Mazzuca Furniture Store 2 Chineese Restaurants I so member "CHOWS CAFE" Bob Mazucca Service and Auto George and Flo Martiniuk Hotel. I so remember the Martiniuk Hotel a Grand Hotel boasting Grand Front Steps where all the older men mostly CNR working men sitting and talking and so so much more. I have to close off for now till next time take care and love to all my family. You new Generation you really missed out on the good ol days my Generation, but everyone has their own generation. | Comments: | It is so nice to sign in and see so many familiar names. You bring back fond memories of my home town. We talk about it often, my friends and family, and one thing we all agree upon and that it was the best place to grow up. Quiet, quaint and safe...no locked doors here...I remember the last day of school when my classmates and I had to tidy up the school yard before we could leave for the summer and those long hot summer days down at the river where if you were lucky, escape from being pushed off the end of the dock! And then there was the long, long dog paddle to the Island, Indian Rock and Slant Island. You cannot find that anywhere else can you! When my sister, Sandra and I went home last summer, my nephew Scott took us on a canoe ride. We started at the marsh behind the CN Station and portaged past the Iron Bridge. In all my years growing up, I never realized what really was behind Capreol and I discovered that 40 years later. We were in awe of the natural beauty that we were privileged to have been a part of growing up in Capreol and don't even get me started on the winters. Forever always, Capreol is my home, true north home.

Took a lot of pictures - was thrilled that the High School was open so we took pics and had a blast, Cindy even remembered her locker number. Kudos to those involved in keeping the place in such great shape. If only the gym were open for us to shoot some hoops :-) Didn't realize the upper level was a motel until I looked at the website today. Would have loved to make the 90th but I was on-call (yes CN) that weekend. We'll be back. Love to hear from any old (yeah sorry, we are) friends/classmates.

Most of my family of 11 children (Gary Glenda Helen Wayne Carol-Ann Maurice (Joe) Edward Robert Norman Sandra Susan was born into an era of hardship (I would not consider Poverty) but difficult times but the difficulties were nurtured by my great parents Kathleen and Maurice Gelinas. My grandparents Peter & Katrina who immigrated from Austria to at point intheir life settled in Capreol. I could write a book my great life in Capreol. Since leaving Capreol I have travelled the Globe Africa Spain Hawaii California now Vancouver always wishing I was still in Capreol. I was to settle once again in Capreol only to be told by my sisters Capreol would not be the Capreol I once knew. If I could only turn the hand of time back. Capreol was the greatest town in the world at my time so much to offer thanks to CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILWAYS. Capreol was a very busy town in it's Golden era only to now be settling in dust as the farm lands of the United States have become. Capreol in my time would be the best described
to as the Little House on the Prairie seen through my eyes. I remember having to cross three bridges to go to school the SWINGING BRIDGE THE OLD RAILLINE BRIDGE AND A LITTLE BOARD WALK BRIDGE TO CLIMB UP THE ENBANKMENT TO THE CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILWAY TRACKS. CAPREOL has changed as to the great people I once knew are no longer. If I could only be back to grade one school age. Thank God that there is a place in life for one to dream.
