| Comments: | That is very brave of her i would have never went out that late at night only being 15 years of age and with the storm i would have been more scared then anything. i have been down there recently and saw what an improvement they have done to keep the bridge up and going in memory of her. | Comments: | Thanks so much for this site! Growing up in Iowa, I remember reading and being fascinated by her story during our Iowa History course in 4th or 5th grade. Today I just read and shared her story with my 4th graders here in Grand Junction, CO, so her legend lives on with a new generation! |

| Comments: | My grandpa worked on the C&NW Railroad. I heard the story of Kate Shelley as a child from my Mom. I was excited to find information on this episode of railway history with photographs, too! I don't know of many (or any) railroad heroines other than Kate! I salute this brave lady, who did her deed at an age (15 or 17, depending on which account you read) when most teens are not very serious about life. |
