Sometime back in the late 60s or early 70s, I went to the drive-in with my aunt, uncle, and brother to see the Raquel Welch movie, "10,000 years B.C." As we drove in, they were giving away free 45s and I got one called "Yellow Balloon." I played it over and over and remember it to this day, although I have no idea whatever happened to the 45.

The funny thing is, the flip side was "Noollab Wolley," which was the A-side played backwards. Anyone else have one of those 45s?

He is hanging in there & I swear plays faster than he ever did.He always amazes me as he started out as a guitarist with great jazz overtones.Bass was almost a secondary instrument which he took to when he went down south & played w/ the Relatives & TYB. I think most of his studio work was on bass too but deep down somewhere he is a guitar slinger at heart & lordy what a fast one too! I always pride myself on how much chord theory I know until I sit & talk with Don. Lawrs in Salem.

Comments:A Yellow Balloon album landed by chance on my record player near Paris, France in the early 70's, from my Father's suitcase, who was working at this time in planes that often stop in L.A. It came from a second hand shop and my father bought it probably because he liked the cover. He did right! Since this day i'm a great fan, and more than that.
From 35 years, I play it from time to time, and I enjoy it as much as the firs day. During all these years I didn't know anything about the band and the record except what was written on the back of the cover, nobody in France having heard about it. I own hundreds of records (I'm 48 now) of many kinds, but there is a very very special thing with this one.
I hoped (I knew, should I say!) during all this time that one day I would find out what was behind this record.
That's done! Your site answers to all my questions and I have to thank you very much!
A 35 years quest come to its end, do you see it every day?
Again, thanks for this site!

Yellow Balloon was the second 45 I ever bought. Got it at Wallich's Music City in West Covina. Shortly thereafter, my dad was transferred to Portland, Oregon and I went to West Linn High School. I was playing the record for my friend, Dan Myers (now deceased) and he told me that Frosty Green was from Oregon City and an old boyfriend of his sister, Donna. Is that true? Donna, Dan and sister Sharon have all died so I have no reference.
Always did love the band!

I saw them at the Marina Palace in Seal Beach, CA. Which is no longer there. Became friends with them. Started working up in Hollywood for the fan club at the 9000 building on Sunset. Great fun! Casey Kasem had a dance show on tv called Hullabaloo. The guys filmed that show at Anaheim Stadium. My friends and I were there to see the guys. We were also there for the filming of Groovy, a teen dance show on the beach in Santa Monica. They were all very nice guys. Always fooling around. Alex was my favorite. I invited the guys to dinner to my house in Lakewood,CA. They showed up for a great spagetti dinner my mom cooked. My girlfriend, Tina, who Paul liked, was having a party at her house in Naples, CA. Alex picked me up and we went to the party. Listened to alot of music, ate, had a good time. I have very fond memories of the guys. I would keep in touch with Alex, and Frosty for a time. But then lost touch. I would love to e-mail them sometime. If anyone has an e-mail for any of them please send it to me. Thank you for this site. It has brought up many happy thoughts and memories of the guys from a long time ago. Judy

There are many other groups such as the Parades' 'Sunshine Girl' or The Sunshine Company...'Back On The Street Again' and how about The Sunrays...'I Live For the Sun.' The Trade Winds...'New York's a Lonely Town.' I glad to hear that there are people out there that still respect groups like that and Yellow Balloon is one of them. This music was fun to hear when we were growing up back then and always have fond memories of my high school days here in California.

In the summer and fall of '68 I was in the Air Force, stationed at the Presidio of Monterey (Defense Language Institute). One of the guys in my class, talked of playing in the band for "Yellow Balloon". I do not know if he played in the band by that name, or if he was a studio musician for the recording. I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in June 1963. During my senior year 1966-67 and the summer after graduating I was the evening dj at WSSB 1490 Durham, NC. I vividly recall playing the heck out of Yellow Balloon by the Yellow Balloon in the summer of 1967 at WSSB. We had a great amount of freedom in what we played during our air shifts in those days.

Just wanted someone to know there were people like me back in 1967 who liked the song and gave it airplay.

Would love to know how he is doing? Don Grady was the drummer of the band at that time and the radio station was holding a contest to see who could guess who the drummer was. Their manager came up to me at the Catacombs while the band was playing and told me all of this. In exchange, I rode with him to a hamburger place to get the band some Texas style burgers. They were all extremely nice.

I remember hearing that Don Grady of My Three Sons fame was a member of the band but I could never confirm it (his name does not appear on the album cover for some reason). So I did a search on the internet and voila! This site came up. Didn't know anybody else knew of or remembered this band or their 1 big hit. Good song, and a great web site. Good to see sites like this devoted to somewhat obscure 60's songs/groups.

Back in my college days at Central Washington State College (now Central Washington University) in Ellensburg, I played the Yellow Balloon album quite a bit in my dorm room in 1967 and 1968, and it was one of my favorite groups back then, along with other groups such as the Association, Turtles, Grass Roots and Buckinghams. Many of my fellow students liked what we called "heavier music" back then such as the Iron Butterfly, but I have always had my own mind when it came to what I listened to.
Glad to see this website up about a fine late 1960's band!

Comments:Gary and I worked together and became best friends in 1982 while working at a company called Omni Computer Products in Los Angeles. We had SO MUCH fun together. Although Gary stuttered and we were selling computer supplies via the telephone (think about THAT!!!), he in short time rose to the top and became the top salesperson in the company...so much so that I had him train new salespeople when they first arrived. He was really away from songwriting and producing at that particular time but giggled like a little kid when he was watching MTV one day and heard R.E.M. covering "Superman". They subsequently contacted him through an old friend and invited Gary to come to a few of their shows to come onstage and sing harmonies when they covered the song (I think they even had him don a Superman cape a time or two). It was not too long afterward that he told me he had started writing some new songs which I got the chance to hear fresh. He still had an incredible pop touch--the songs were sunny and fun, hook-laden and catchy.
That sunny feel people came to love came from a very real place--he was an extremely proud father of daughter Sydney and was an endless romantic--always finding new people fo fall in love with and share his particular charms to. A truly wonderful human being (by the way, many fans might not know Gary's father was the author of a popular daily syndicated comic-strip whose name escapes me now) with a gigantic heart, we still talk about Gary frequently for his influence in the sales company I now work with. I hope this background info might add to your enjoyment of his contributions. A great site!!

Please know that every effort is being made to rid the book of these types of messages as soon as they are posted, so the book can remain solely dedicated to the “Yellow Balloon”.

It was an interesting time in history, particularily my history. I remember one time we went to watch Johnny Rivers record at a little studio in Hollywood. Gary was introducing me to the band members and he had a bad stuttering problem at times. He couldn't get my name out and finally did. Johnny laughed and said, "That's easy for you to say." And then everyone else laughed too.Gary was a gentle soul and always had a smile on his face. I only recently heard that he had passed away and it has touched me deeply. He was an orginal!

I am actually 17 years old and 60's music is the only style of music that I listen to. It is really too bad that the Yellow Balloon does not have the fame it should have deserved, only if they lasted longer and had more songs, they might have been bigger than the Beach Boys. I also really like Strawberry Alarm Clock, but they have a slightly different style. By the way I like the site.

Comments:just looking on the internet for a copy of Yellow Balloon
and happy to see that someone has a CD out.....

Paul Cannella is an old friend. although we have been out
of touch for sometime now, i still look for him on the
internet to see if anything new is happening.....

if you know where i can find the CD, i would appreciate the
information.

i'd like to make a suggestion for your site... the font
that you used for your site, while great for you and i as
web designers and creative sorts, is very difficult to read
and you might lose some of your readers.

anyway, i'm glad your site is up for those that have
enjoyed listening to the album over and over.

thanks ero

by the way did you know that Ken Handler, their manager,
is who the Ken doll is named after... trivia, trivia, trivia

Homepage URL: http://IYellow Balloon is a favorite song of mine from the mid 1960's. In fact, this track is included on a Nuggets compilation which I have owned for 10-12 years now. I remember seeing Yellow Balloon on american Bandstand.
How Did You Find The Site: I was looking for a reference to Yellow Balloon and was amazed to see that in fact, there was a site devoted to this band and its personnel. It is sad that this band never recorded any chart singles after Yellow Balloon, yet it's good to know that there are folks out there who rememebr this band, the hippy-trippy, mid-60's and the great harmony groups like Yellow Balloon and The association.

Comments:I absolutely love The Yellow Balloon. I don't know any
recent information on them but if you have any at all, like
if they would consider doing shows in Hollywood/LA. I'd
trip out! I would love to see even a band cover their
songs. My most favorite songs on the CD would have to be
Baby Baby It's You, Children of St. Monica, and A Good Man
(to Have Around the House). Oh, and I can't forget
Junkmaker Shoppe. I basically love the entire CD, but
those are the ones that I play over and over. I listen to
the CD week, if not in its entirety, then a song or two.
Hey, since you like these guys- do you like any of these
bands? The EARLY Pink Floyd(Syd Barrett), Tomorrow(I saw
Twink play a month ago), The Zombies, Mark Wirtz's A Teenage
Opera, The Beach Boys(Pet Sounds), The Pretty Things? There
are lots more to discuss, but if you find any interest in
these, ple
