| Surnames Being Researched: Wright | |
| Comments: I am researching the Wright family surname from the Wiarton, Bruce County, Ontario, CA area.
Here in the USA, there was a Clara May Wright whose parents were Canadian supposedly from the Wiarton area. They possibly had dual citizenship with USA and Canada but I am just guessing. Clara M Wright was born apprx 1895 and died apprx 1932 possibly May, in Michigan, USA and married a James E Clark in Wayne County, Michigan, USA. James E Clark was born in Palmyra TWP, Lenawee County, Michigan, USA apprx 1879 and died in Wayne County, Michigan apprx 1935. I found Clara Wright listed in the Wayne County, MI USA 1920 Census listed as a "lodger". Also, after Clara was married, I found her listed in the 1930 Wayne County MI USA Census with James E Clark and children: Clark, Isabelle (b: 1920*) Clark, Delana (b: 1928*) Clark, Edna. There is a Wiarton, CA connection with Clara M Wright and her parents. I just don't know who her parents are. Isabelle (listed above in the 1930 census) left USA and went to Canada to live with her Wright grandparents in the Wiarton area. |

| Comments: Well it's been 4 years and I'm still searching. I found Sarah Lamont and have her obituary. I now have to find birth and death records of Fanny Stephenson and her parents,Robert and Mary (Smith). Fanny married Charles Schell on 10 Nov 1880. Fanny was born 1860 according to census. She died before 1901 census. Robert was born 25 Dec 1825,Ireland. I have nothing on Mary Smith his wife. A brother Warren Stephenson(or uncle) may have been born in Ireland also. I'm having thought that the family couldn't speak english and just didn't bother to register Fanny in Canada. The census states she was born in Ontario.
Can anybody help with this one?? Thanks for help From Diana in BC Canada |

| Comments: I just wanted to update my e-mail, as above (the jiggs1000@hotmail.com address is my current e-mail). I'm searching for infomration about Thomas Simons, my g-grandfather, who was born in 1850, I believe in Ontario. He married my g-grandmother, nee Lydia Shelton, in 1870. The Sheltons were a prominent family from Kinloss, and Lydia's father founded the Black Horse Tavern there. We think Thomas came from Kincardine. On the 1880 U.S. census the couple is shown living in Bay City, MI, where he is a baker. That census lists his birthplace as "Canada." Thomas's middle name may have been "Jefferson," but I'm not sure of that. I'd like to find out if he died in 1885 or 1886, and where he's buried. We know he's NOT buried in Michigan; and I don't think he's buried in Ontario (don't know for sure). | |

| Comments: Hi :
I am researching my great grandfather the Reverend James Crawford. I know he preached in the Bruce Peninsula during part of his career, before homesteading in Mckellar Twp., north of Parry Sound, where he died in 1883. He was a Methodist and preached at Holland in 1856, Arran 1857-58, Walkerton 1859-60, Mulmer 1861, Laxton 1863, Creemore 1864-72. I know that he had family (siblings) in the Bruce Area, as I have a copy of an article from the Wiarton Echo newspaper dated 1883 that states to the effect, S.Crawford received word that his brother Rev. James Crawford was ailing at Parry Sound and that he had left to visit him, but he died before he arrived, the article goes on to quote my great-grandfather's obituary. I have been successful in following James's wife, Sarah Eyres back to Ireland, but have not been successful with James. The closest possibility I have found was a Samuel Crawford who came from the County Donegal in Ireland and is alleged to have had a brother James , and also a brother John and a sister Jane? I have been unsuccessful in establishing just which S. Crawford was the one identified in the Wiarton Echo. |

| Surnames Being Researched: Simons Shelton McDonald | |
| Comments: My ggrandfather was Thomas Jefferson SIMONS, b. 1850 in Bruce County, ON. He married Lydia SHELTON, b. 1854 (daughter, I believe, of William and Mary Shelton). William Shelton was the founder of the Black Horse Tavern in 1854. "Black Horse" later came to be known as Kinloss. Lydia was the 10th of 12 children; she married Simons in the early 1870s. They lost their first son in childhood, Willie Alonzo SIMONS; he's listed as being buried in 1874 in South Kinloss Cemetery, Lucknow, on the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid (OCFA). A daughter, Victoria May SIMONS, was born in Lucknow in 1874. Two more sons, Harry O. and George W. SIMONS, were born in 1876 (Lucknow) and 1879 (West Bay City, Michigan), respectively. My grandmother, Ida Maude SIMONS, was born in West Bay City Dec. 25, 1881. So the family migrated from Lucknow, ON to Bay City, MI sometime between 1876 and 1879. Thomas J. SIMONS was a baker by trade, and I believe he had a younger brother named Louis. The families lived and worked in West Bay City until at least 1885, and then we have no record of them there. Thomas died sometime between 1885 and 1892; Lydia remarried to a man named Colin McDONALD in 1892. I think he was from the same area as Lydia, in or around Lucknow, Bruce County, ON. I don't know where or when Thomas J. SIMONS died, or where he's buried. Nor do I know when Colin McDONALD died. I'd like to find the names of SIMONS' parents (family lore says his mother's first name was Vashti, but I have no proof). Lydia died in Dec. 1924 and was buried alone (with a grandson) in Lake View Cemetery, Calumet, MI. I'd like to find SIMONS' death date and burial place. Any information would be helpful. My grandmother Ida married Christopher ROWE in Amasa, MI in 1915 and my mother, Eunice Rowe Gallagher, was born in 1916 in Crystal Falls, MI. She's still living at age 88. | Surnames Being Researched: James Wallace/ Augusta Johnstone | |
| Comments: I am looking for family of a James Wallace who was on the 1881 Cenus in Manitoba. He could have also been living around Oak Lake at this time and then moved to Winnipeg around 1889. His name is listed on my father's William Johnstone Wallace birth certificate who was born Feb 13th 1889 in Winnipeg. My Dad's mother's name was Augusta Johnstone who was on the 1881 Manitoba cenus. She was born in Grey County Ont. in 1856? My Dad's parents died when my he was about 8-10 years old and was foster out to the Green Family who lived around the Oak Lake area. Later he went to Alberta to live with his Uncle Goerge Johnstone and Grandparents William and Anna Jonstone. I hope that someone from the Wallace District in Manitoba will have some connection with my Grandfather James Wallace or perhaps give me a lead as to where to look futher. Hope to hear from someone soon. Mary Wallace | |

| Surnames Being Researched: Campbell
Netterfield |
|
| Comments: These two families were originally from County cavan in Ireland. The first representatives seem to have been John Campbell and his wife Mary Netterfield (daugter of Isaac Netterfied)who arrived in Canada probably in the 1830s. They settled in Bastard Township in Leeds County. Mary's niece (I think), Grizella Netterield married Richard Trotter and lived just down the road. William Netterfield and his family arrived in Bastard a few years afterwards.
There is some evidence that the Netterfields moved on in the 1840s to Bruce County. There is some evidence that there were a number of Bastard families moved on to Bruce County in the last 1840s or early 1850s. I believe there was a area called the "Queen's Bush" that opened up about this time. Any information or hints as to where I might find information would be appreciated. | Comments: Dick Martin from Lucknow worked on a whaling ship in the Beaufort Sea in early 1895 when he escaped to the gold mines in the Yukon. His father was then already working a mine near 40-mile creek. I am writing up the arctic portion of the story, but know nothing of the family's background in Ontario. If I could get a thread started, it might be possible to find out who stayed behind, and whether Dick and his father ever came home. Can anyone help? Would be pleased to pay for research time. Thank You!!!! Walter Vanast | |
