Comments:I found your interesting web page by searching for a book I recall from grade school (mid 1950's). I know this is a huge longshot, but I'll put the only details here I recall and perhaps this will jog someone's memory: it was a book about Mars and the alien beings had the typical large bug eyes and large heads depicted in some of the scifi drawings. The main character as I recall, was a boy who met the aliens. Other than that, the only thing I recall about the book was that it was red cloth and had a short title, possibly just "Mars." I have looked everywhere from eBay to all types of book stores (online and in person) and no one seems to know what I'm talking about. I'd flip right out if someone could give me a clue as to the name or author of this book. Thanks again for the info and a wonderful web site. Theresa

Comments:Eric,
My family thanks you for the gift of THE MAGIC BALL FROM MARS and STARBOY, as well as the HYDRONAUT, presented to my husband, who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Since his passing, my granddaughter, age 7, has enjoyed my reading of both books. Your father was such a master of words, imagination, and a "reporter", too, I have learned. Excellent job on the website and all it's updates!

My thanks and prayer's go out to his family, he was such a special person and I became a better person knowing him.
With warm regards,

Comments:You have such a great site here, RW, and I enjoy it each time I come here. You have very good content and I like your Harvest of Memories very much. Erin's story is SO GOOD! I've read it several times. Eric's Page is interesting and I like your journal of your trip aboard the "Connie". "Any Friend of Owney's" and "Albino Blue" are just great. Your site keeps calling me back. Good-bye for now, until I return again.

Comments:Hi,
Just signing in again after 2 years or so. I still love the website-even better this time! And since then, I finally found a copy of "Starboy" to go with "The Magic Ball From Mars". Both were every bit as good as I remembered. And now I'm extra happy that both have been reprinted, so that young people can again read and enjoy! The sense of wonder has returned for a new generation! And now my kids (mostly grown) can have their own copies instead of having to borrow "Dad's" to read. Congratulations to the Biemiller family!
Best Wishes, Steven

Comments:Hi Dad and Granddad!!

Happy Father's Day to you both!!

It seemed only fitting to use this today to send my love and thanks. Thanks to a father (Eric Biemiller) who instilled in me a love and appreciation for music for which I'll always be grateful. And to a grandfather who passed down a love of literature and writing. The ties that bind, right? Today we finally got our own piano and bookcases for our family room (what other room would they go in?). I can't wait to get the piano tuned and play a little "Greensleeves" with Granddad's books looking over my shoulder from their place of honor on the bookshelves. All the lessons learned from two generations of fatherhood are still with me and still very much alive.

Thanks again, Dad and Granddad. Much love always,
~Stace

That was fifty years ago, but I've never forgotten the feeling of wonder. It was my first taste of science fiction. Now, I write it, not prolifically, but now and then.

What an amazing and fun perspective on the 1950's, captured in a children's book... it's absolutely delightful to find this website (thanks to Google!) and see that Mr. Biemiller had many fans, and more books for us to find. (Can't help but wonder what the Man from Out There would think of the Internet...)

Comments:Eric,

Hey Cousin! I finally got around to re-reading "The Magic Ball from Mars". Thanks for building this great web site!! I always loved Uncle Carl's books, and still have a signed copy of "The Albino Blue" (birthday present, as I recall -- it stirred my on-going interest in marine biology and scuba diving)... don't know happened to the signed "Any Friend of Owney's" that we got the Christmas after it was published. But MBM and "Starboy" have always been my favorites... and re-reading MBM, it not only holds up after 50 years, but I think of it in many ways as prophetic of sci fi stories to come. Thanks again! David

Comments:Hi Eric,

What a great idea to have a webpage for your dad's books. I fondly remember reading "The Magic Ball From Mars" at my local public library time and time again in the 50's when I was in grammer school in Pasadena, CA. After searching for many years I finally found a used copy several years ago, and my son (now 19) and I both read it. We both liked it immensely. I haven't found Starboy yet. I only read it once or twice as a kid because the nearest copy was at a much further library. All of your father's books deserve to be reprinted so kids of this generation can read them and enjoy.
By the way, coincidentally, I have a Ph.D. Nuclear Engineering. Keep up the good work, Eric, and thanks again for setting up the website.

Comments:Carl L. Biemiller was my granddad (I'm the daughter of the author of this webpage). Although he died when I was only 4 years old, I still have some very vivid, and very fond memories of him. The ones that come to mind are of me sitting on his lap at their house in Monmouth Beach, NJ while he would make up stories about how elephants lived inside of small black plastic film roll containers. He'd lift the very edge of the container lid and let out an elephant roar that convinced us they were truly inside! I feel very lucky to have experienced his wonderful imagination while he was alive, and even luckier now to be able to enjoy his books (which I hope to share with children of my own someday).

Comments:Carl L. Biemiller II was my brother-in-law. A newspaper person at heart, the hard edges were softened by his whimsical mind. That mind produced his magical books for young readers. My memory of him holds clear pictures of him as he sat by the fireplace with one or more of his four sons listening raptly to bedtime stories invented on demand. Another memory reflects my astonishment as he rattled off little known, amazing things about unlikely events, concise data about almost anything, dates and places that interested him. That talent resulted from his having absorbed tons of "fillers" used to complete a column or fill up an unexpected space in the newspapers for which he worked as a reporter.
