Comments:If anyone reads this: Stay away from AMR!!! I work in Massachusetts. I have worked in fire/ hosp/ and other services and AMR BY FAR is the worst company to work for. I am back due to relocation...
Example: my ears ring after the end of the shift for 16 hours due to no isulation on the engine cover (considering legal action againts AMR for hearing loss). C-Med radio: doesn't work. Tried to have it fixed and the Sup said "the radio company doesn't service that radio so you're SOL".
Please, think twice about working at AMR.
Thanks

Comments:Hello fellow EMT's and Paramedics! I'm currently a senior English/Psychology double major at a midwestern university and work weekends as a medic. I'm putting together a small dictionary of EMS slang for a class project. If you have any interesting, odd or simply unique slang terms you or your service use on a regular basis, I'd love to hear from you. Please include as much information about the word as you can and the geographical area you work in. I'll be taking suggestions (all are welcome) until mid-March '03. Thanks.

Comments:Firstly, for the EMT-soon-to-be types. Here's the TRUTH about the job. The work has it's fun, humerous and entertaining moments and at times, you get to work with some great people. HOWEVER, the pay SUCKS, Management SUCKS, AMR Sucks! And don't even buy into union bullshit. Teamsters, IAEP, they talk alot, suck money out of your checks and give you very little in return, certainly NOT job security like they promise. If you want to actually make some decent money, work an ER. While it's not as "exciting", there is greater stability and better working conditions there. Don't waste your cash going to Medic school, check out PA school instead. That is unless your hell bent on driving code-3 and wearing uniforms that are barely comfortable enough to get you through 1 hour much less a 12 hour shift. As an EMT in the field, you will begin to realize that trained monkeys can do this job and the only thing that management sees in you is that your 98.6 and can wear a uniform. You're easily replaced and very expendable. If you have doubts about that, simply do a google search on "fuck AMR' "AMR Sucks" "Fuck EMS" and see the long list of disgruntled EMTs and Medics. What a nice way to waste a college education... There's no suck thing as a "better company" as they ALL suck.

To the management of Cole-Schaefer ambulance, Med-Event and AMR, may I extend a warm and friendly FUCK YOU....

We work long unbearable hours, in dangerous and forsaken enviroments, and give doctors a job in the er. But that oviously doesn't count. But none the less, I do love my job.

Comments:HI! I'VE WORKED FOR BELL AMBULANCE FOR ALMOST 4 YEARS NOW
AS AN EMT. I'VE ALSO WORKED FOR A VOLUNTEER FIRE & RESCUE
DEPT FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS. I'VE RECENTLY LEFT FIRE DEPT. DO TO
ALL THE HOURS I WORK FOR BELL IN MILWAUKEE WI. WE HAVE
APPROX 200 EMPLOYEES & 20 AMBULANCES. I ENJOY WHAT I DO &
LOVE ALL THE EXPERIENCES I'VE HAD. MEETING MANY NEW PEOPLE
EVERYDAY IS ONE OF THE INTERESTING PARTS OF MY JOB. WE
ARE A PRIVATE COMPANY THAT WORKS TOGETHER WITH MFD
(MILWAUKEE FIRE DEPT). WE GET PRIVATE HOME EMERGENCY
CALLS, MANY NURSING HOME CALLS, 911 CALLS , CAR ACCIDENTS,
ALOT OF HOMELESS PT TYPE CALLS . IN OUR SYSTEM WE HAVE
PROTOCOLS (RULES) THAT WE RUN WITH WITH MFD, WHERE CERTAIN
VITAL SIGNS OR MOI (MECHANISMS OF INJURY) THAT WE NEED TO
CALL OUR MFD PARAMEDIC UNITS IN ON FOR PT EVALS. SO, WE
DON'T USUALLY TRX (TRANSPORT) VERY CRITICAL PTS (PATIENTS),
BUT OCCASSIONALLY WE DO ARRIVE ON SCENES OF VERY CRITICAL-
LIFE THREATENING TYPES OF CALLS. FOR INSTANCE NATURE OF
CALL SOMETHINGS WRONG WITH MY WIFE, I THINK SHE'S SICK! SO
UPON ARRIVAL THE HUSBAND METS US AT THE DOOR "MY WIFE IS
SITTING AT THE TABLE, I THINK SHE SICK" WELL SHE WAS SICK
ALL RIGHT ! ACTUALLY BEYOND SICK --SHE HAD ALREADY PASSED
AWAY! THIS IS WHAT WE IN EMS CALL AN "O'SHIT" TYPE OF
CALL --WHEN YOU ARRIVE ON SCENE AND YOU SAY "O'SHIT" , LIKE
WHEN I ARRIVED ON SCENE IN MY RURAL TOWN VOLUNTEER DEPT.
CALL FOR MVA ( MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT ) AS WE APPROACHED WE
SAW A SEMI - TRACTOR TRAILER PERPENDICULAR PARKED IN THE
MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WHERE HE WAS BACKING INTO HIS DRIVEWAY
AND THEN WE SAW A CAR IN THE DITCH DOWN THE ROAD BUT THE
TOP WAS SHEARED OFF!! "O'SHIT" GOD HOW I DIDN'T WANT TO
LOOK CUZ THIS WAS RIGHT OUT OF THE MOVIES WHERE I USUALLY
LOOK THE OTHER WAY. BUT, COME ON GIRL YOU ARE 911 BUCK UP
AND LETS GO ! WE JUMPED OUT OF THE AMBULANCE WE ASKED
SHERIFF ON SCENE 1ST AND YELLED " WHAT DO WE
GOT?" "NOTHING", THESE ARE THE TEENAGE GIRLS WHO WERE IN
THE CAR WE FOUND THEM WALKING ON THE STREET , NOT A SCRATCH
ON THEM !!! THEY DUCKED JUST IN TIME!!! AMAZING!! BUT
I'LL NEVER FORGET THE CALL . THIS ONE ENDED GOOD NOT ALL
DO . JUST WASN'T THERE TIME . I'M MOSTLY WRITING TO
THOSE WHO IN JR/SR HIGH WHO ARE THINKING OF EMS (EMERGENCY
MEDICAL SERVICES) AS A HOBBIE OR CAREER . THIS JOB IS
REWARDING AND I GO HOME EVERY DAY KNOWING I MADE A
DIFFERENCE IN SOMEONES LIFE BIG OR SMALL & THATS WHAT MY
LIFE IS ABOUT . IT'S NICE TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOUR JOB &
YOURSELF EVERYDAY & YOU CAN'T WAIT TO GET BACK TO IT
TOMORROW !! HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN SAY THAT ABOUT THEIR JOB?
I LEFT OTHER JOBS FOR MORE PAY CUZ BELIEVE ME THIS JOB IS
SEVERLY UNDER PAID I COULD MAKE MORE MONEY FLIPPING
BURGERS, BUT MY HEARTS FULFILLMENT IS WHATS IMPORTANT.
ASK ANYONE IN EMS -- ITS WHAT DRIVES YOU . THIS IS ONE OF
THOSE JOBS EITHER YOU LOVE IT OR YOU DON'T IT'S IN YOUR
BLOOD!! I'VE LEARNED ALOT ABOUT PEOPLE IN THIS JOB YOUR
KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION REGARDING HEALTH & PEOPLE NEVER
ENDS SO IF YOU LIKE TO LEARN & GIVE OF YOUR SELF THIS IS
THE JOB FOR YOU!! "TRY IT YOU'LL LIKE IT" . I HOPE MY
COMMENTS TAUGHT YOU A LITTLE ABOUT EMS & OUR LINGO & I
WOULD ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO TRY IT, IF ITS NOT FOR YOU THE
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCES ARE YOURS TO KEEP!! LOG ON TO MY
COMPANIES SITE & GET A VIEW OF WHERE I WORK. ONCE YOUR IN
EMS THE "BROTHERS & SISTERS" YOU FIND WILL MAKE YOU A PART
OF A WONDERFUL "NEW" FAMILY THAT IS STRONG AND TAKES CARE
OF EACH OTHER. WELCOME!! HOPE TO BE YOUR SISTER IN EMS!

Comments:I'm a 10th grader at Amity High School. I have been
studying to be a paramedic for about 2 years now. I think
that it would be a great job, because I love helping
people. I plan to join the Amity Volunteer Fire Dept. as
soon as I trun 16. In the 9th grade we have to start
studying about what job interests us and then our senior
year we do our senior projects on our choice of job. I
would apperciate it if you knew of schools close by, in
Oregon if possible, or any info that could further help me.
I have many books full of sicknesses, job oppertunities,
and the work conditions. If any one knows of more info or
web sites to visit please drop me an e-mail.
Thanx,
Lisa
