Name: Isaac Azimov E-mail address: JAF3881@aol.com Description of the challenge: Make a program that will print everything!
Thats right. Everything that ever has been said or ever will be said.
The program will work much like the odometer on
a car except instead of numeric characters it will
have alpha characters (a thru z) plus space and comma. Each "wheel" in this alpha odometer will have all 26 letters of the alphabet plus space and comma instead of 0 thru 9. After the right most wheel prints all 28 characters it will advance the next left wheel one character. Instead of 7 or 8 wheels on this alpha odometer we will have 46 wheels since the average printed line is 46 characters long. Thus the first printed line will be:
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
The second line will read:
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaab
The 29th line will read:
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaba
The 103519 line will read:
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaafxdn
and so forth until
the last line which will read: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Granted, most of what it prints out will not make any scense like:
"A dog has six legs"
But it will print:
"A dog has four legs"
It will print the day you will die and what you will die from. It will print EVERYTHING!
There is one minor problem though. 28 to the 46th power is a very large number. A 1000 Mhz computer
could display about 19 lines per nano-second. At this rate our alpha odometer program would take about 1128 years to finally exit the loop. To bad
such a tool wasn't available at the time of Copernicus. We would know "EVERYTHING"!
Of course you could just buy a couple thousand
500 Mhz machines and start the program simutaneously on each but at different locations in the loop.Difficulty: 1 -- Beginner ONLY
