Comments:I have posted quite a few times here, and have never heard from one single post yet. What's wrong does not one person remember me from my Nashville Days. I was born there in 1939, attended Grade School there on Dickerson Road, from grade 1-8, Litton 10-11, Hume Fogg 11-12, attended Naval Reserve Meetings in Shelby Park until July 1957 when I went active duty and retired in 1985 after 30 years Naval Service. Worked at Western Union Telegraph Co. after school delivering telegrams on bicycle and Cushman Motor Scooter. Is everyone dead from those years? I sang and played guitar on Church Street, above Princess Theater at Eva Marie Jones Studio, 4th and Church, her uncle started the Grand Ole Opry in the early days. Once entered talent contest at Loews Theater with DJ Hugh Cherry of KFOX Los Angeles Radio fame. Oh well if anyone out there would like to send me a message please do so, as I am about to give up say no one survives from these years..............................dean

Comments:Hello Chip. What a great site with lots of great memories. I grew up in Nashville and went to Clemons, Sylvan Park, Glengarry, Wright Jr., Glencliff and Peabody Dem. where I graduated. I remember almost everything on the site. I am 53 years old. Just two things that I'm not sure about. You said the first McDonald's was in Madison. I thought it was on Dickerson Road just below where I-65 is now. That's east alright but not Madison. Also, I think it was galoshes we wore when it snowed. Wearing goulashes would have been messy indeed. Thanks for all your work to keep this site going.

Comments:Great stuff! I am 53 and grew up in Nashville. Lots of great memories. A couple of things made me scratch my head, though. You said the first McDonald's was in Madison. I thought it was on Dickerson Road just below where the interstate is now. Also, we wore galoshes in the snow. Wearing goulashes would have been very messy. BTW, did you know that Dairy King on Thompson Lane is still in business. Wee Tee Golf closed after the longtime owner died but DK is now operated by some friends of mine, the Jones family. It is now a dairy dip plus a meat-and-three.
About Kennedy, when he came through town I saw him at Vultee Blvd. and Murfreesboro Road in his open car. When he was shot I was only a few miles away from you; on the playground at Clemons School.

Comments:I remember the Christmas parade that used to go down Church Street ever year, 40s to 50s. Charlie Knickens BBQ on Jefferson Street, good BBQ. The Rat Races on 5th Ave (Rex Theater) cause they had so many rats in theater, I even remember the ticket takers name: Snake Brains. And of course the old 5th Avenue Theater, lots of Roy Rogers movies, and the old Princess on Church where the Life and Casualty Tower stands (was in that theater with my brother when WWII ended, can not remember movie though, must be getting old). Used to march in parade I think some sort of Armed Forces Day Parade, I was a member of Naval Reserves in Shelby Park, the building was built like a ship, does it still stand there, also had a submarine on the Cubmerland River. Worked for Western Union on 4th Ave. in old Stahlman Building back then prior to going Active Duty with Navy in 50s, served until 79. Worked for Navy as a civilian after retiring in 2000 here in Philippine Islands now, send me some emails if you remember the good old days of Nashville, when coffee was 5 cents, a loaf of breach was 10 cents, a good lunch with drink was 25 cents, a movie was 12 cents, you could buy a house and 250 acres of farm land outside Nashville for around $2,500, thats right I was only about 10 but still remember the farm going out the Harding Road, I bet it would sell for around $50,000 now. Best regards to all in Nashville who remember Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, Fruit Jar Drinkers, Minnie Pearl, Ernest Tubb, String Bean, Jamup and Honey, Uncle Dave Makin and his son Doris, Rod Brassfield, Hank Snow, The Louvin Brothers, Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys, all for 25 cent admission to the Grand Ole Opry on 5th Ave., just in back of the Blue Bird Club and across the street was the Hitchin Post Bar. Old Hank used to get drunk their before his show, and God Bless him, he still could sing pretty good even loaded.

We would ride the bus since my grandmother never learned to drive. We spent the day shopping at the "dime store" and at Easter would walk through Bunnyland and then eat lunch in the Iris room. As a child it was truly magical...

I spent many wonderful Friday and Saturday nights there, listening to Mac, Pete, Louis, and the guest players who would drop by after getting off work from the Dixieland Pavilion at Opryland. Mac, Pete and Louis cheered me when I was blue, lifted my spirits when I was tired (I worked days at a publishing house and nights at Opryland). Thank you for all the wonderful photographs that are also pages from my childhood.

Comments:Our old home place still stands at 6th Avenue, North and Taylor where we moved after living on 5th Avenue, and 4th Avenue. I started school at Fehr on 5th, but Taylor was the dividing line and I had to go to Buena Vista, then to North High School, graduating in 1949. We have a school reunion every year and I look forward to seeing old school mates each year with attendance around 300. I am attending Monroe Street UMC at 7th and Monroe, where I went to Sunday School when I was 10 years old, started going there on their 100th Anniversary in April 2006, again, and there are so many North friends in that church including Robert (Pinhead)Link, who has been a member of that church all his 90 plus years.

My father owned it with his friend and he passed away a couple of years ago, I would like some pictures of it but my family cannot even tell me the name of the street it was on in Nashville. Remember the blizzard of '51 (I was 5 years old)
My wife once worked at Harvey's wrapping Christmas presents
Loved to eat at Hershal's Tic Toc on Church Street
Bought musical instruments from Hewgley's Music Store on Commerce
Remember Dr Carl Seyfert's death in a car wreck
Remember when the second TV station came on the air (caused a fight every day between my sister and me over what to watch: Howdy Doody or American Bandstand)
Remember what a great time I had growing up in Nashville!

Comments:Attended Glencliff High School until busing began in the fall of 1971. (Glencliff was not mentioned as one of the high schools in Nashville during the days of Isaac Litton and all the others.) Graduated from a private school (which lasted only a couple of years) in 1973. Still consider Glencliff to be my Alma Mater.

This brought back many good memories for me! Still... much of it was before my time. It's amazing how much things have changed over the years.

I remember when the first interstate opened in Nashville, back in the late 60's. By the way, they called Scott Shannon (the local DJ at WMAK you mentioned) "Super Shan." Don't forget the sight and smell of fresh nuts and candy at Sears Roebuck on Lafayette, when you first walked in the door!

Thanks for a great walk down Memory Lane!

I would love to see photographs of the cafeteria at Harvey's, The inside of the Elk's Lodge (I remember red carpet and a winding staircase)and the B & W Cafeteria. I still have my "Do Bee A Good Bee" cup that I purchased with trading stamps there. I believe Romper Room was the show that the "Do Bee" came from. Somewhere I have many photographs of Fair Park that were taken a week before it was torn down. I will share them if I can find them. Thanks for the memories,

Lived in he Harding Court aparments in the late 30s and on Kenner Avenue in the West End until 1947, Lived across the street from Billy Wade and his parents and brother. I attended part of 2nd grade at Woodmont School; grades three to five at Cathedral, and six at Overbrook.

Does anyone remember Suburban Bus Lines? The owner's children, Butch and Dev Trainor, were among my neighbors and playmates.

When we left Nashville in '47, E. J. Jordan, then manager of the Belle Meade Theatre, moved into our home at 107 Kenner Avenue.

Boy, did I love Music City. Cried like a baby when we moved away; I was 12 at the time.

Comments:WOW!!! Each time I visit this site I drift back to the good ole days in Nashville. In April 1963 at the Quality Eat Shop @ 10th and Woodland a little know muscian by the name of Curly Day came into the restaurant. I remember him sitting at a table and picking his guitar. He began to pen a song about the recent death of Patsy Cline, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Combot Copas, and Randy Hughes the airplane pilot. Many of the words to that song I remember so vividly today. It went like this: "It was on a Tuesday evening in 1963, a boarded private aircraft, a Piper Comanche. They were Music City when disaster tore them down in the swampy hills of Camden Tennessee. Their names will live forever as friends and sweethearts cry. We'll never know the reason why loved ones have to die." (Memory starts to become vague here) The rest I remember was "Randy Hughes the airplane pilot and the lovely Patsy Cline ...." Curly Day made this into a record and on the flip side if I remember correctly was a song called "Mom I'm Coming Home." These song stay in my mind today but the phrase in the later song "Mom keep the lamplight burning, I'm coming home always comes to mind when I have the opportunity to visit my home Nashville. If anyone would know where a copy of this recording could be found I would love to know.

Comments:Graduated Donelson High School 1955. Class mate was Gerre Anne Goss. You totally left out one of the most important pieces of memorabilia from that era. The Noel Ball Show! Channel 4 (I believe) every afternoon, five days a week, Patsy, Gerre Anne were the two paid employees that appeared every day doing pantomine and Gerre Anne was a professional dancer and did a self coreographed dance with every song she was assigned by Mr. Ball. We had our very own version of American Bandstand, just with Noel Ball instead of Dick Clark. This definitely needs to be included here as everyone in Nashville knew who Gerre Anne Goss was as well as Noel Ball and rushed home from school to see that day's show. Ms. Goss would then proceed on to Chester's for her costume for the next day's show and THEN on to Miss Pauline's Dance Studio on West End where she was an instructoeall through Jr. High and High School.

My oldest sister Jennie still talkes of to good old days in Nashville and some of the people she knew such as Linda Bingham, Barbara Elliott, Janie Russel and there were some boyfriends names that I can't remember at this time.
There was also some guy that walked around the neighborhood dressed like String bean and pretended he was playing the banjo.

Memories of lunch at The Spot - where we ordered perch and fries. We shopped at all the downtown stores - Harvey's, Cain Sloan's, Chester's, Castner-Knott's, Gus Mayer's. All great. Butterscotch parfaits at Harvey's counter downstairs. Then had watch repairs done at Steif's. And best lunch in the world at Cross-Key's where we ordered the cherry date nut macaroon pie. Movies were a treat. One of the theatres had a live organist before the movie started. We loved that. Of course the Parthenon and Centennial Park and don't forget Printer's Alley and the Brass Rail later when a teenager. Also Joy's Flowers.

In those days, you had to reserve your Opry tickets a month or two in advance. I'd always hang out backstage at the Ryman, getting all the stars autographs. Little Jimmy Dickens was my hero. I was there when Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two made their first appearance. I always dreamed of performing on the Ryman stage one day. Lo and behold, in May of 1966, that dream came true, making me the 4th Canadian to appear. Ended up performing there 9 times that year. Loved your site. Thanks for the memories. Scoot.

Went to Wright Jr. High when it was still new. Went on to Glencliff for a year and a half (couldn't stand it!), and transferred to Hume Fogg in the middle of my junior year, graduating in 1974.

Joined the USAF in Jan 75 and never went back. Spent 22 years in the AF, retiring Jan 97. Worked for Lockheed Martin for 10 years, now a Federal govt employee at the U.S. Census Bureau outside Wash, D.C.

Comments:I was born in Nashville in 1950 and spent 8 years there prior to moving to Memphis. I have many fond memories of the Hippodrome and Centennial Park. I attended Miss. Reeves private school for two years but I can't find any information on that school. I would love to know if anyone else has heard of that school. I believe it was on Poston St. one block north of West End and across form Centennial Park.

Comments:Despirately seeking Susan, Patty Ann, Earlene, Shirley's, or other girl friends that I cant recall their names, went to Schwab grade 1-8, Litton H.S. 9-11, Hume Fogg, 12, class of 1957. Worked for Western Union on Church St. during after school hours. Drove 46 Ford, 49 Chevy, do you remember scating, wrestling matches at Fairgrounds, grand ole opry. Attended Grubbs Memorial Babtist Church most of childhood, were you there? Met many friends at Shelby Park swimming pool, attended movies at Roxy, Princess, 5th Avenue, Rex, Paramount, Loews, Knickerbocker, and Tennessee Theater. Do you recall the Hugh Cherry talent contest on Saturdays at the Loews, he went on to be a big time jockey in Los Angeles, now I am retired, living in the Philippines. Drop me a line, even if your name is not Shirley. It seems that in the 50s everyone was either named Shirley, Peggy Sue, Patty Ann, or Mabeline.......dean in Baguio City, Philippines

Comments:I was a "regular" at the Saturday nite Co-ed. I remember that sometimes we danced to the juke-box (free songs all nite). Sometimes they had a live combo, some local teen groups that wanted the experience and the fun of performing for other kids. One group had my future husband as the lead guitarist and singer though I didn't know it then. I remember several of us girls would dress up like the "go-go dancers" and dance next to the stage to help the band out. Remeber dancing the "Jerk", the "Monkey", "Swim", even the "Twist". But when you danced the "Dog" you better keep your feet moving to keep it from becoming the "dirty dog" and the manager would escort you from the dance floor. If you didn't want to dance, you could go into their film room and watch old episodes of The Little Rascals. In the summer, they would open the pool for night time swimming. But whatever you were doing, your parents knew where you were (especially after they started stamping your hand to be sure you didn't leave and then come back before your parents came to pick you up).
The best part of these memories it that we had places to go that were considered safe environments with responsible people in charge. Our kids today don't have these outlets. Friday night football or basketball games, followed by "sock hops". Saturday night dance clubs, community swimming pools, or just hanging out at Shoney's "meeting and greeting". The sixties in Nashville was a time that teenagers still had some of their innocence, but were allowed to spread their wings (but not too far or too fast).
Thank you for letting me share some of my memories.

Comments:Nashville was not a large city in the past. Can you imagine the city limits being at Cherokee Ave and West End,(Harding Rd.)Even then kids of all ages were fortunate to live in Nashville. With the quality of our radio and TV stations along with the music industry even in the "forties"we had a window on the world that other kids in cities of comperable size didn't have. This is in spite of the crazy "blue" laws and liquor regulations. There was a lot to do in Nashville then. Maybe more different things than now. I had the pleasure of being asked to escort a beautiful young lady to her prom in Louisville. You might imagine how wimpy recorded music sounded to me after dancing to the live music we had in Nashville played by some of the old coots we saw at the Doughlas Corner party.
I have tried to tell my kids what was going on here in 1957
and both my girls have said they wish they had lived here then.

Comments:I remember a lot of kids put "cutouts" on their cars to bypass the muffler. Then we would roar around town, or back and forth between Nick's and Shoney's. People had "combo's" at their homes, charge a little to get in, and people would show up from all over.

Comments:These memories are great. Raised in the West End area. All of that area is gone now with Vanderbilt taking all of it over. I still have all of my memories. Spent lots of time at the Hippordrome skating rink, in fact met my husband there, as did my mother met her husband there, my brother met his wife there. So it was a special place for us. Loved Centenial park, with the Sunday shows at the Shell. Went to town for the movies on very hot days. Swam at the pool at Centenial park pool no longer there. I loved the park at the lake at CEntenial park. So many memories in Nashville. Thanks for the memories. Wish I had this in printed form.
