Comments: I am researching the 15th century Chinese trading fleets that plied the Indian and other oceans (and discovered America according to Gavin Mendes)between 1407 and 1421 for one or more oil paintings on the topic. I've read, "1421 The Year China Discovered America" and have ordered other books through my local library but have not yet seen or read discriptions of the vessels with the exception of the NOVA episode entitled "The Sultan's Lost Treasure". Does anyone have some suggestions for sources of historically accurate colors and the appearance of some of the many types of 15th century junks? I'm at the beginning of my research and thought that I would put together a plastic model of a junk to help become familiar with the architecture of traditional, Chinese vessels.

I find this an interesting and very useful site. I am interested in three particular junks once commonly seen in Hong Kong:

1. construction drawing of a Duk Ling type of junk since I would like to construct or illustrate the frames and bulkheads layout.

2. Swatow traders of the 60 and 70's which I need more clear photos or illustrations of the stern and stern deck.

3. Hong Kong fishing long liner, I need more information on the rudder trunk or other construction details.

I would appreciate any help. Thank you

I visited Hong Kong a few years ago and became intrigued with junks when I noticed their scarcity and then the fact that I saw one for sale in the local paper surprised me. I am looking to purchase a large sailing junk in the near future. In the meantime, I read that there are few large junks in existance, but that there are a few derelicts in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Can anyone give me information on those and wheather they are available for purchase? I live in California and am looking for a large non sailable junk for a project here. Thank You.

Comments: Hi Guys,

I came across your web site via www.google.com. I typed in Okinawa Yacht Club. and found your site.

What I am looking for is: The Okinawa Yacht Club. When I was flying out of Naha in 1964 and 65 for Air America out of Naha on the Scheduled Air Services Ryukyus down to Miyako, Ishigaki and Yonaguni twice a day for a year in my spare time I joined the Club. At that time I was flying on a Commercial venture by AAM and did not have Military priviledges like the rest of the company, so the Yacht Club was my means of relaxation. I was and still am a would be sailor, but I enjoy the ambiance and the people.

While a member a couple of other AAM guys had small boats. One Louie Banta had a localy manufactured boat with a Yanmar diesel in it and my other Friend was Tom Murray and his wife Puzzy who had a small 20 or so foot motor boat. We had many good days of sailing out of the club to the island and doing some fishing.

When I left the island to go back to Laos rather than give up my membership I converted it into a Life Member in Absentia and still have the engraved silver card.......somewhere. I did find it a few months ago and was going to write to the club and try and determine their status.

Is the Club still functioning? If so, does anyone have a contact address or web site for them? I would really appreciate it.

Best Regards to All

Comments: Great site! I'd like to see (a lot) more pictres
of the boats under sail. Are you familiar with
the boat that was used in a Northwest Orient
Airlines commercial about 15 years ago? I am
considering the purchase of a junk reported
to be that boat. I have no reason to assume
it's not and would like to find as much
history as I can regardless of the puchase.

Comments: This was a terrific site. Could you include
some drawings that would show the interior
layout. I think we need info to contrast with
the Bermuda rigged, fiberglass sloops that
now own the sailing world to keep us
thinking "outside the box" re boat design.

Mei Wen Ti, an authentic Chinese junk that is presently
available for rent as a bed & breakfast and for charters by
the San Diego Yacht & Breakfast Co. It is fabulous!

Comments: This is a great web site. The more I see and read about
Junk rigs, the more I realize that they are the perfect rig
for short handed and safe blue water crusing by short
handed crew. While I will always be interested in Chinese
Junk, I may sadly have to accept that the best I can do, is
purchase a standard Bermuda Rigged boat - and convert it to
a Jung Rig. Has anyone had any experience in doing just
that - converting Bermuda rig, to Junk rig. Any and all
suggestion would be welcome.

Comments: I'm looking over plans for a GFB-16:Trailer/sailer camp
cruiser that purports to be influenced by junk design. It
can carry a junk sail rig. It is 16 ft in length and 8 ft
at the beam. It has two bunks. Has anyone built one or
sailed one? It is a Selway/Fisher design and the plans
come from Salty's Boats Inc Rockland ME. Completed weight
is about 1200 lbs.

Comments: Hi,

When I was a child, my mom wanted a junk. My dad bought one
of the 200 or so that were brought over in the '60s. We
completely restored it. In fact, my mom made the sales as
there were no salemakers in California willing to make the
as originally fabricated. The only deviation was no ox
blood.. The name of the junk was the Tchung Fung (Spring
Zephyr)It was about 30 feet in length and was powered by a
hand cranked Yanmar diesel. During my parents devorce, my
father sunk the boat using a dock hose. As money was tight
for us (not dad as he was a physician, Dr G Bell), we ended
up selling the boat for a loss. Hopefully it is somewhere in
good hands. Over the past several years I have been going to
Alameda California to watch the progress on a large junk. It
is owned by a woman who I believe lkives on it. She is doin
a fantastic job. She has gotten the wood restored, has all
masts, put a cabin on the rear deck and has added sails. It
is turning out to be a beautiful boat.

Comments: Outstanding site!!!! Anything on junk culture (libraries,
book stores, yacht clubs, yard sales) is rare as hens'
teeth so finding this site is a gift from the celestial
keeper. More more more more. You'd be amazed at how few
junks sail the Columbia and it's a damned shame. Cheers!
